This presentation addresses the sources and weighting of project risk in coarse gold deposits with relevance to experiences at the Ballarat mine and Castlemaine goldfield. With sample representation and reliability often a source of great error in the resource estimation of coarse gold deposits, it follows that this matter should be of greatest risk to a mining project - but is it? What are the costs and efforts required to best quantify the sampling error due to nuggetty effect? After all, the main problem in Victorian gold mining ventures in the current decade is not the amount of gold available, but defi ning which portion of it can be converted to Ore Reserves or more so profitable gold bars. The author postulates that greater risk to the project lies in the geological interpretation and matching resource spatial parameters to mining methods, than the degree of uncertainty related to grade due to nuggetty gold. Recent experience in the Victorian goldfi elds is that the investor market has already severely discounted Mineral Resources reported in accordance with The JORC Code - so if they don't believe in the capacity to upgrade the resource why should we? To this end, Castlemaine Goldfi elds Ltd at its Ballarat gold project does not intend to estimate its gold mineralisation for public release, instead choosing to focus on the geological interpretation and mine planning elements. So with coarse gold deposits, is your Mineral Resource reported with The JORC Code a glass half full or half empty? Our mining forefathers in Victoria had no predictive tools which could define resources to any degree and yet were successful. By over emphasis on the definition of mineral resources and particularly the sampling error, are we ignoring the basics of cost control, solid geological interpretations and maximum mining flexibility. Woodlawn Mines began underground operations in 1986. At the time of going underground it was envisaged that there would be no 'contract' payment to the underground employees. This was a relatively unique step to make, especially as most major underground mines in Australia relied heavily on the contract system to motivate their workforce. (Obviously with varying degrees of success.) Woodlawn faced the task of motivating their employees through a multi-skilled system with a great emphasis on leadership and a genuine care for their employees. The 'proof of the pudding' is that Woodlawn has not lost any time over industrial issues since beginning underground operations in 1986. To achieve success in any operation the organisation must not only be advanced in its management principles but also be prepared to be innovative in the way it deals with physical problems, ie ground control, equipment selection and maintenance. Difficult ground conditions at Woodlawn have necessitated the deployment of two Cabolt Jumbos and the construction of cost-effective shotcrete systems. The shotcrete system now being built has been tested in a prototype form and is proving to be a safe and simple way to manage weak, low stress friable ground. Although the ground at Woodlawn has low stress component by virtue of the fact the ore can have a density of 4.5dm3, cable dowelling has become a necessity. The two cable dowel jumbos install high quality reinforced cables. The pressure of 'production' means that these machines must be consistently available for use and the training of maintenance personnel and operators ensures that a maximum of cable dowels can be installed over any given time span. In any modem mine ventilation is a primary concern and the major area of concern comes from the vehicles themselves. In our recent replacement for the standard 'Toro' loader, three engine options were considered. A relative newcomer to underground mining was accepted. The Detroit 60 series (DDEC) engine came with a great reputation and has lived up to this. The engine has an electronic management system that reduces particulates to a hardly visible minimum, provides great amounts of engine power and reduces fuel consumption by approximately 45 per cent. The operational benefits of such an engine are worth sharing through this conference.

For the mineral industry, sustainability seems to mean socially positive and ecologically neutral mineral extraction. Mines are financed and developed in response to demand for their products. The purpose of my paper is to indicate the potential dimension of demand. As part of an unrelated study which I undertook ten years ago, it became apparent that there is a persistent relationship within communities between infant mortality and mineral use; greater mineral use corresponds to a lower rate of infant mortality. This comes as no surprise; sufficient potable water, a reliable supply of food, hygienic waste disposal, hot water and refrigeration all improve the chances of survival of the more vulnerable members of any community. The predictable provision of these facilities requires the application of minerals. This relationship is supported by a table (Appendix 1) included in the UNICEF publication, æThe State of the WorldÆs Children 2001Æ. This table lists regional infant mortality rate (IMR) statistics from around the world, including a listing for æindustrialised countriesÆ. Such countries experience an IMR lower by an order of magnitude than any other region. æIndustrialisedÆ inevitably involves the use of metallic and energy minerals. The principal use of copper is in the generation and distribution of power; it is fundamental to any industrialisation. IMR is a valuable connection because it quantifies caring for the young, a vital strategic driver of human behaviour independent of time, place, fashion or economic circumstances. I have tabulated the population, IMR and the copper demand per head of population for countries containing over 99 per cent of the population of the world in the years 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1989, and 1999. These countries have been consolidated into four groups, Very High, High, Medium and Low rates of infant mortality (UNICEF has used this terminology; the Low group includes all the æindustrialised countriesÆ). The purpose of this consolidation was to reduce the volume of work, to dampen out the impact of regional wars and business cycles, and to dampen out the variable quality of information. Based on the pattern of the copper demand, population and IMR over the last 50 years, I have projected the likely copper demand in 50 years time. A dominant feature of my tabulation is the increase per decade in copper use per head and a corresponding reduction of the IMR. The word æuseÆ is preferred to æconsumptionÆ because it is estimated that over 80 per cent of all the copper ever mined is still in circulation There are two major influences at work; one is the absolute increase in population (UN estimates for 2050 are updated periodically) and the second is the movement of countries into a higher pattern of use and lower IMR. For example the Medium group in 1989 had an infant mortality rate approximating that of the Low group in 1960. With the population of the Medium group (which includes Russia and China) forecast to reach 2.6 billion in 2050, the world copper demand in that year will be significantly greater than the present figure. Nevertheless it will not be as great relatively as the increase of over 300 per cent in the last 50 years.

Despite significant investment in safety in the mining industry (mostly focused on processes and systems), many companies are unable to sustain and further improve their performance resulting in continued workplace incidents. The problem persists despite the best efforts of companies and allocation of resources to achieve Zero Harm. A DSS survey in 2019 found that two out of five companies that cannot manage risks and face disaster, leave the market within five years. All safety/risk management systems have the common steps of risk identification, prioritisation, design of controls consistent with risk tolerance, and verification of implementation/operability of controls. This is then complimented with improvement to one or more of the above elements through learnings obtained from incident investigations. In principle, the above process should work to reduce risks to, and keeping them at, a risk level consistent with risk tolerance in the organisation.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Telfer operation comprises both open pit and underground operations producing gold and copper. The underground operation is made up of three production areas, the sublevel cave (SLC), M Reefs narrow vein open stoping and Western longhole open stoping areas. With stoping situated on the abutments of a mature and active sublevel cave, the interaction between mining areas is often complex. This is particularly evident in the M Reefs orebodies with high levels of extraction in all four reefs, and reliance on pillars to maintain local and global stability. A key concern was the potential for a cascading pillar failure to develop and rapidly progress through the M Reefs stoping area. The monitoring plan needed to capture any change in overall stability and identify if deformation was caused by pillar failure within the M Reefs and hanging wall closure, or shear on the reefs caused by SLC influence.

The Australian mining sector is undergoing a significant transformation with the adoption of advanced technology to the operational landscape. This has highlighted a critical disconnect between our traditional educational systems and the skill requirements of working with these advanced technologies. This paper aims to provide a behavioural science analysis of how the traditional manufacturing mindset, deeply rooted in our educational frameworks from primary to tertiary education, registered training organisations (RTOs), and in-house learning and development, is misaligned with the needs of today’s technologically advanced mining operations. Originating in the industrial revolution, the manufacturing mindset prioritised efficiency, mass production, and the division of labour. In educational institutions, this translated into an emphasis on rote learning, linear examinations, and a rigid adherence to processes and procedures. Such a system, while effective in producing a workforce suited for repetitive and predictable tasks, falls short in fostering skills like problem-solving, adaptability, flexibility, and coping with change – skills that are increasingly vital in a mining sector dominated by automation, robotics, and AI. The paper discusses how the focus on disciplined adherence to standard work procedures and processes in educational and training programs has inadvertently stifled creativity and autonomy in learners. This issue is compounded in the workplace, where employees, having been conditioned to operate within strict guidelines, now face the challenge of adapting to environments where autonomous decision-making and creative problem solving are crucial. In essence, the traditional approach to education and training has prepared individuals for a world of work that no longer exists. This paper advocates for a whole of pipeline approach, grounded in behavioural science, to revamp mining education and training. It highlights the importance of understanding and influencing the behavioural aspects of learning and recommends for an approach that promotes diversity, critical thinking, and adaptability, preparing the workforce to excel in the rapidly changing landscape of the Australian mining sector.

During induration of iron ore pellets produced from magnetite concentrates, there are many reactions occurring simultaneously. While the magnetite is being oxidised to hematite, carbonate fluxes are being calcined, leading to the formation of complex oxides. Calcination of fluxes and the formation of calcium and magnesium ferrites and silicates during the preheat stage can influence the magnetite oxidation process. As the calcination reaction proceeds quicker than oxidation at temperatures experienced during the preheat stage (700 - 1200¦C), the bulk flow of CO2 emanating from within the pellet should disrupt the diffusion of O2 to the magnetite reaction as the gas fluxes are similar in magnitude. This increases the time required for the oxidation of the pellet. Using an infrared rapid heating furnace, experiments were performed on heating individual magnetite green balls in an air atmosphere. These experiments showed that time played an important role in the extent of oxidation and calcination and temperature significantly influenced the initial evolution of high temperature phases such as magnesioferrite, calcium ferrites and calcium silicates. Understanding the kinetics of all these reactions for a particular pellet feed, and their interaction, is important for optimising the design of the induration furnace.

Gold mineralisation at the Macraes Gold Project is hosted in the Hyde-Macraes shear zone and can be traced for ~30km along strike, although economic resources are confined to a 7 km section in the vicinity of the Macraes township. The shear zone, which typically dips at a low angle (~20 o ) to the NE, is bounded by an upper hanging wall shear and a lower footwall fault. Mineralisation occurs along the hangingwall of the shear zone as well as in low angle concordant shears and stockworks. Ore types include graphitic cataclasites with variable amounts of quartz veining, ælode schistsÆ and quartz-vein stockworks. Rehabilitation at the mine has focused on creating an environmentally benign site dominated by pasture to allow continuation of the traditional pre-mine farming economy. Changing regional economics, continued urbanisation and a reduction in traditional employment opportunities has seen a rethink in the long-term rehabilitation outcomes. The community has recognised that the rehabilitated site will provide the basis of a viable tourism venture and the creation of a Heritage and Art Park (working title æGolden Point ParkÆ) is the culmination of that process.

Incidental to the progress of a geological survey of the Kalgoorlie goldfield during 1927-28 a number of specimens of telluride minerals were obtained, chiefly with the help of Mr. F. G. Brinsden, general manager of the South Kalgurli mine, and Mr. Ernest Williams, general manager of the Boulder Perseverance mine. This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preseryed from the Kalgurli mine by Mr. A. E. Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection o{ Mr. S. F. C. Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and "weissite" muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.

However, it is extremely difficult for these initiatives to become properly embedded into the operations and for that value to be realised on an ongoing basis.This paper will explore some of the historical reasons why this is the case. Some of these reasons include the limited tools available to manage an integrated operation. It was Harold McMillan, Prime Minister of England 30 years ago, who used the phrase "The Wind of Change" to describe political events in Africa in his day. So well did this phrase capture the spirit of the time that it echoed around the world, and the echo has never stopped. Change is the constant factor in the society in which we live and everyone of us has had experience of the effect which it has had on our professional and personal lives.Change will not stop, it will continue at an increasing rate and the questions we must answer are how do we prepare ourselves to meet the challenge of future change and how do we take advantage of the opportunities which it will bring?It is these questions which I wish to discuss in this address.There is nothing new about change in the mineral industry, it has been happening for thousands of years and it will continue as long as civilisation exists on earth. One type of change is economic and we are all aware of the rises and falls which occur in the prices of metals and minerals (Figure 1). When these have happened in an orderly manner, and could be predicted and planned for, it has been possible to take advantage of the benefits and minimise ill-effects, but when they were sudden and precipitate, and could not be predicted, the consequences were serious. The extreme example, of course, was the oil price shock of the 1970s which had such disastrous effects on industry and society.Other types of change are social, cultural and political. They have all been important in recent years and will continue to be so in the future.But it is technological change which may well be the most important because its effects are profound and irreversible, and alter irrevocably the way in which we live. So in discussing the mineral industry in a changing world I will talk specifically about technological change.

The mining sector has been a leader in investing in safety improvement initiatives, yet relatively few mining organisations can accurately track the positive effects of these initiatives or identify areas that may require more attention. The consequences of not taking safety seriously are severe, and unfortunately injuries and fatalities are continuing to occur across the mining sector (Brady, 2019). There is a tendency to turn to lag indicators such as All Injury Frequency Rate (AIFR), Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR), and Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) to track these outcomes. As outlined below these approaches are inherently flawed and a renewed focus is needed on indicators within the control of leaders, indicators that have high predictive validity for future events and data that is used in a way to enable learning and change.

A method is presented for calculating the number of cycles of stress to failure of a drill rod from operating variables; a mathematical analysis by Cooper of the stresses present in drill steels is applied to the forged collar, i1i-in. hexagonal hollow drill steel in common use in Australia; and an estimation is made of the dry fatigue limits at various points along a drill rod.It is shown that these calculations predict failure at a 'point where failure rarely occurs, and do not predict that failure should occur where it does in practice. The reasons for this anomaly lie in the neglect of bending stresses in the stress calculations, and in failuredue to corrosion fatigue at a preferred section rather than to simpler fatigue under non-corrosive conditions.INTRODUCTIONIt has long been recognized that failure of metal sections by fatigue is influenced both by the number of cycles of stress imparted to the section (N) and by the magnitude of this cyclic stress (8). In this paper, both Nand Shave been calculated for rods which have failed in service, and whose operating history is known. While the calculation of the number of cycles to failure is·simple, the calculation of stress is more complex. The results of stress caIculations predict that failure should occur only hi short rods, and then preferentially at the tip end rather than the shank end.However, in actual fatigue failures of steel rock drill rods, approximately 75 per cent. of such failures are close to the shank end, and failures near the tip end are rare.The usual explanation given for this high incidence of shank-end failures is that at the point of failure there exists, in forged collar steels of the type common in Australia "hardness valley" or. Water management at a tailings storage facility (TSF) presents one of the major risks to the safe performance of the facility. International and domestic dam safety guidelines assess a dam’s hazard category based on the consequences of a dam failure and the subsequent downstream damage to the environment and communities.Often a rigorous risk assessment is undertaken during the design stages to identify and control hazards associated with water management through life-of-mine (LOM) phases. However, as experienced during the recent downturn in commodity prices, early closure of a mine can occur rapidly and unexpectedly. Although guidelines such as the Australian National Committee on Large Dams Incorporated (ANCOLD) recommend that one of the key objectives of integrated TSF planning is to ‘plan all phases of a tailing dam’s life to ensure adequate storage capacity including early closure ’ (Australian National Committee on Large Dams Incorporated (ANCOLD), 2012) this is often overlooked by owners who are focused on fulfilling the mine’s potential and early closure is not on their radar.CITATION:Ind, M J, Rynhoud, M and Brand, K, 2016. While the new Minister of Economic Development sends his apologies at being unable to speak at this Conference, I am delighted to present on his behalf. The Ministry of Economic Development is not only responsible for managing the Crown mineral estate, but also for developing initiatives and policies to promote regional economic development and for managing the GovernmentÆs broader economic development strategy. IÆd like to talk to you today about the critical links that need to exist between these three areas.   I am going to start with a question for all of you. What do these towns have in common? +        Waiuku, +        Thames, +        New Plymouth, +        Nelson, +        Greymouth, +        Arrowtown, +        Reefton, +        Palmerston, and +        Dunedin.   The answer is minerals. These towns were nearly all founded on the back of minerals and mining. In the case of Greymouth it was gold that brought the people to the mouth of the Grey River and it is coal that sustains the town.   In 1870 the town of Shortland had 20 000 people, 90 hotels and was twice the size of Auckland. We now know Shortland as Thames, and of course Auckland is considerably larger. One wonders whether the good folk of Shortland suffered from ætraffic jamsÆ with 90 pubs to navigate between. Gold mining in the Aorere River near Collingwood led early entrepreneurs to develop the land surrounding Nelson as a food basket to sustain the mining population. Nelson is still thriving on this legacy today. The town of Palmerston was founded in 1862 as a stopping point for gold miners heading into central Otago. The gold rush made Dunedin New ZealandÆs first highly industrialised city. Reefton on the West Coast was the first town in New Zealand to have electric lights and in the recent past we were wondering whoÆd be left to turn them off. New Plymouth, and Waiuku are still known as energy and mining centres.   By contrast once thriving towns like Capleston, Canvastown and Blackball are just names on a map now, and at the extreme you have places like Waiuta which has been reclaimed by the West Coast forest. Queenstown was built off the back of the gold rush, but by 1900 with the gold gone, only 190 people lived there yet Queenstown has managed to rebuild itself thanks to some other stunning natural assets. These examples help illustrate three key points that I am sure will each be extensively linked with our minerals and mining industries. First, NZÆs development and that of its regions has been, and continues to be, inextricably linked with our minerals and mining industries.   Second, things change. Sectors, regions and countries must continually adapt and improve if the are to avoid the fate of the Waiutas of this world. And third, the development challenges faced by NZ and its mining industry in the 21st century are vastly more complex than in the past. Governments and industry alike must balance and respond to a range of domestic and international environmental, cultural, economic and other interests and considerations. If you thought of your industry as æjust digging holes in the groundÆ then you may as well simply stick your head in one!

It is well known that some sinkholes or subsidence take place from time to time in the areas where abandoned room and pillar type mines exist. The authors have been involved with the stability of abandoned mines beneath urbanized residential areas in Tokai region and there is a great concern about the stability of these abandoned mines during large earthquakes as well as in long term. The 2003 Miyagi Hokubu and 2011 Great East Japan earthquakes caused great damage to abandoned mines and resulted in many collapses. Particularly the effect of the quality of backfilling of abandoned mine below the urbanized areas is very important under static and dynamic conditions. The authors present the effect of the quality of backfilling on the ground subsidence associated with abandoned lignite mines under static and dynamic conditions and discuss its implications on the urbanized areas above abandoned lignite mines in this study. The basic model for the evaluation of any coal-bearing property is the cash flow projection, the major components of which are operating costs, capital charges, taxation and revenue. A range of cash flow projections can be produced by varying the assumptions which underlie the operating costs, by assuming various forms of capital funding, by making assumptions as to future taxation and by speculating upon the present and future market value of the product. As for any model, the informational inputs and assumptions are vital because, no matter how sophisticated the processing, the informational inputs and assumptions cannot be improved by it. That is to say, the validity of the output (the total evaluation itself) cannot be of greater certainty or significance than that of the inputs. The total evaluation can of course be expressed in a number of ways such as the Discounted Cash Flow (D.C.F.) Rate of Return, the Net Present Value or, the Payback Period. The foregoing statement may seem trite. However, it is necessary to be clear about it so as to avoid unnecessary complication and a preoccupation with techniques as opposed to the informational inputs and assumptions. So far as techniques are concerned, much has been written and said about them during the last decade. Most of us have heard, if not always understood, something about probabilistic models, Monte Carlo simulation, sensitivity and risk analysis to say nothing of inflationary costing and the relative merits of developing cash flows in terms of current or constant money. Those techniques have their value, particularly if they can serve to illuminate conclusions which could not be reached on a simple and even perhaps on an intuitive basis. I am, however, reminded of one major coal mining project in which 20 or more major variables were identified, many cash flow projections were run on the computer and a detailed sensitivity analysis was carried out. The major conclusion reached was that the D.C.F. Rate of Return was predominantly sensitive to variations in selling price and operating cost. Of course, the funding and fiscal elements of a cash flow projection have to be dealt with as rigorously as possible. However, in the development of any coal property, capital requirements and taxation are, in part at any rate, dependent upon the assumed operational parameters. If the latter are misjudged, the whole evaluation process is deeply affected. The same is true of revenue, in the sense that, the positive cash flow is a function of output as well as selling price and again, misjudgements about achievable and maintainable levels of production also deeply affect the final evaluation. I shall try to underline the fundamental influence of the technological factors upon lead times, capital costs, operating costs, taxation, funding and the achievable and maintainable levels of production. In turn, these affect the whole question of coal property evaluation and indeed, the likely success or failure of any coal mining venture. I make no apology therefore that this paper does not set out to discuss the more esoteric aspects of the evaluation process but rather, directs attention towards some of the informational inputs and assumptions which merit clarification and discussion.

The kinetics of reduction of PbO-silicate melts in CO-N gas mixtures at 900¦C have been studied. Rea~tion rates were measured by moni- toring the CO2 content of the product gas. A wide range of gas and melt compositions and gas flowrates have been investigated. The overall reaction rates in heterogen- eous systems are typically characterised by a steady increase as the gas flowrate is in- creased. At low flowrates the processes are limited by gas film mass transfer. At high flowrates it is expected that the rates will tend to maximum values determined by either the rate limiting chemical reaction or diffusion in the condensed phase. In the present series of experiments it has been found that for any given gas composition the overall reduction rate goes through a maximum with increasing gas flow. The maxima, which occur at relatively low gas flows, are more than an order of magni- tude greater than those observed at high gas flowrates. The results of these and other experiments are presented and analysed. Possible rate limiting mechanisms in the reaction system and their implications regarding commercial reactors are discussed.

The thermodynamic properties of arsenic in metal, speiss, matte, slag and gas phases are first summarised in this paper. Arsenic associates with sulphide minerals and generally has compounds of high volatility, but it has a weak affinity for sulphur and a strong affinity for metals, especially copper and iron. In the initial stage of the oxidation of sulphide concentrates arsenic is volatilised easily prior to the oxidation of FeS, although it tends to be fixed in the condensed phase as FeAsO4 if the concentrate is over-oxidised. Thermodynamic simulation of oxidative copper smelting reveals the distribution of arsenic between matte, slag and gas, and the possibility of condensation of arsenic from the resulting waste gas is discussed. In reductive smelting more arsenic remains in the metal or matte, and is sometimes concentrated as a separate speiss phase. The phase relations and thermodynamic properties of speiss are also summarised briefly. Arsenic refining from smelted copper metal is shown, from an examination of the basic principles of arsenic removal into slags, to be difficult. Owing to its weak affinity for lead however, arsenic refining from lead bullion is seen to be much easier.

The upper Arkansas River south of Leadville, Colorado, USA, contains deposits of fluvial tailings from historical mining operations in the Leadville area. These deposits are possible non-point sources of acid and metal contamination to surface- and ground-water systems. We used stable-metal isotopes to help ascertain metal retention and release mechanisms that influence metal transport from the deposits to shallow ground-water systems. To accomplish this, we excavated an intact core from a small fluvial tailings deposit and performed laboratory column experiments to examine the amount of metals leaching through the core. Deionised water was continuously applied to the top of the core, and effluent was collected from the bottom of the core for a period of about two months. Three saturation conditions were used, including unsaturated, partially saturated, and fully saturated. Reducing conditions developed upon partial and complete saturation of the core. During the unsaturated leaching phase, core effluents were acidic (pH 2.8 - 3.5) and contained elevated metal concentrations. During a portion of the unsaturated leaching phase, stable-metal isotope spikes and conservative tracers were simultaneously applied to the top of the core. The isotopes provide a means to delineate metal behaviour within the core. During the unsaturated leaching phase, the isotope spikes did not exhibit breakthrough with simultaneously added conservative tracers. However, some of the stable-metal isotope spikes did break through when reducing conditions occurred in the core (during the partial- and completesaturation conditions). In this paper, we use Cd as an example of the utility of stable-metal isotopes in geochemical studies. In the case of Cd, after the core was partially saturated, the 111Cd spike was released as evidenced by a change in the Cd isotope ratios in the effluent. This release continued during the fully saturated leaching phase, however, the total Cd concentration did not increase. These results suggest that the 111Cd spike was retained inside the core during the unsaturated leaching phase, and only partially released as reducing conditions developed. Results from this core-leaching experiment indicate there is a large reservoir of water-soluble material within the fluvial tailings deposit, which yields elevated metal concentrations and high acidity, and which may degrade adjacent ground- and surface-water quality. Use of stable metal isotopes in this study facilitated the determination of different metal-retention processes, metal-release processes, and metal sources in the fluvial tailings deposit in response to changing geochemical conditions.
