Flotation feed density is an operating parameter which is currently not well understood. Most models of flotation only incorporate its effect on particle residence time, but it is likely to have additional effects within both the pulp and froth phases of the machine. Test work was performed in MetsoÆs 3 m3 RCS test rig to investigate the effect of flotation feed density on metallurgical performance. The rig was operated at Rio TintoÆs Northparkes operation using flotation feed and scavenger tail. For each feed, tests were performed at different feed densities, and measurements were performed to estimate the pulp and froth recovery as well as other key flotation parameters (eg bubble size, turbulence and froth stability). Results of this test work have shown that the pulp density does affect key parameters of the flotation process in both the pulp and froth phases. Pulp phase kinetic rates decrease at high density and this is attributed to a reduction in the turbulence within the cell. Froth phase recovery, however, improves presumably because of a stabilising effect due to a greater loading of solids on bubble surfaces.There is a need for more research to be done to better understand these interactions so that metallurgists can determine the optimum flotation feed density to use at a particular operation, or within a section of a flotation circuit.CITATION:Runge, K C, Tabosa, E, Crosbie, R and McMaster, J K, 2012. Community members’ sources of information about companies’ social investments are often influenced by the messages in a variety of communication channels, such as newspapers, television and social media. In this sea of communication channels, corporate communications may not always have the desired effect in influencing community perceptions. This paper explores the efficacy of communication between mining companies and communities in Chile through content analysis of corporate sustainability reports and newspaper reporting.Chilean media reporting between 2005 and 2013 is examined to identify community perceptions of corporate social investments made by mining companies. Content within the Chilean newspapers El Mercurio (national) and Soy Chile (regional) is contrasted with content from corporate sustainability reports published by The National Copper Corporation of Chile (Codelco) and Barrick Gold Corporation, Canada (Barrick) for the same period. The objective is to identify differences in the way that corporate social investments are reported by companies in sustainable development reporting and by media in newspapers.Overall, the study demonstrates that the media’s framing and reporting of corporate activities was more negative than positive. Moreover, media outlets tended to focus upon the ‘negative impacts’ or ‘damage’ to communities brought about by mining developments. Conversely, companies’ public communications were largely focused upon direct improvements in livelihoods (health, education, etc) of neighbouring communities. This preliminary study provides a baseline for the development of new formats of effective communication with neighbouring communities. OxianaÆs Sepon Copper Operation (part of the combined Sepon Gold and Copper Operation) is located in Savannaket Province, in southern central Lao PDR. The site is relatively remote, being some five hours inland from the Laos/Thailand border crossing on the Mekong River. The copper processing plant was designed to treat 1.3 Mtpa ROM ore to produce 60 000 tpa of copper cathode. Commissioning of the processing plant was completed in mid March 2005 with ramp up completed in January 2006 with 5260 tonnes of cathode harvested in this month. The focus of this paper is on SeponÆs unique grinding circuit. The entire grinding circuit is operated at highly acidic conditions, adding a number of different operational issues over and above those normally associated with grinding circuits. It became evident early in the ramp up, that reaching design mill throughput of 170 dry tonnes per hour with the original design would be challenging, coupled with the realisation that ceramic grinding media consumption had been underestimated. In order to lift the overall throughput of the processing plant, a significant continuous improvement process has been implemented within the grinding circuit to lift this key unitÆs production capacity. This presentation will focus on the key areas that have been addressed in the 12 month ramp up period and highlight areas for future work. Results to date have shown this improvement process to be very successful, with throughput rates in excess of 200 tph regularly achieved.

Mining at the Mt Leyshon Gold Mine in semi-arid north Queensland stopped in 2002. Newmont Australia has recently initiated a thorough post-closure water management study of the site by revisiting the existing information and conducting new water-related investigations. The focus of this paper, which is the first publication on post-closure environmental management of the site, is an overview of the site water quality in view of the sources and spatial distribution of polluted mine water, and also the performance of cover systems in controlling water flux though mine wastes. Since the mine closed the rehabilitation of waste rock dumps and tailings dams have significantly improved water quality in the surface receiving waters. However, the Scats Stockpile, the Heap Leach and Old Plant areas, which can potentially produce acidic waters, enriched with heavy metals and arsenic, are the top management priority. Modelling of the potential transport of contaminants in groundwater needs further investigations. A detailed examination of the waters in seepage sumps showed high concentrations of manganese, cobalt, nickel and selenium, which were previously overlooked. The study also showed distinctive chemical signatures for waters at different locations: the waters draining from scats, supergene materials and waste rocks have distinctly lower pH and higher concentrations of dissolved iron, sulfate, heavy metals, Mg, Mn, U, Se and As. While, the tailings sumps are more alkaline, and are enriched in Na and Cl. The southern tailing sump is characteristically As rich. The waters draining from the supergene materials have higher Cu concentrations. Assessment of the cover monitoring systems showed that although covers pass the design criteria, automated recording of data may ignore any failure of the monitoring system. Recalibration of the moisture sensors not only showed realistic moisture values compared to rainfall data but also showed that the permanently installed system records values that are higher than those of the mobile system. Event-driven recording of data overlooks infiltration events. Besides, with a higher time resolution (daily measurements) the breakthroughs could be clearly detected. Modelling of the water balance in covers is underway and an example is given here. Newmont is currently reviewing water management options and is willing to share the lessons learned.

Chelopech Mining EAD (CMEAD) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dundee Precious Metals Inc (DPM) and operates the Chelopech underground mine and processing facility located in Bulgaria. The final product sold is a flotation concentrate containing copper minerals with associated gold and silver. The increase in production from 0.6 to 1.0 Mt/a by 2009 occurred with the original (1975) secondary/tertiary crushing, and primary/secondary ball mill circuits. As part of the mine/mill upgrade project to 2.0 Mt/a, a new single stage semi-autogenous (SAG) mill and ancillary equipment was installed, replacing the original circuits, with commissioning occurring during the first half of 2011. Aspects of the design, commissioning and operation of the new comminution facility are the subjects of this paper.An extensive program of comminution characterisation test work was completed in 2004/2005, which indicated moderate hardness and competency characteristics. The characteristics were considered suitable for a range of comminution approaches which were assessed with respect to power requirements and capital and operating costs. Retention of the existing primary crushing facility, and installation of a new single stage SAG mill located within the existing mill building, was selected as the design for the expansion.An extended ramp-up schedule for the overall concentrator upgrade turned out to be necessary as the comminution and flotation circuits were completed prior to several downstream unit processes (concentrate filtration and tailings thickening), which were required to reach the design mill feed throughput rate on a sustainable basis. This resulted in the opportunity to gradually increase the SAG mill ball charge as necessary, to obtain the throughput corresponding to the various downstream processing constraints.A relatively fine cyclone overflow stream particle size distribution is a feature of the Chelopech comminution circuit that has not been fully overcome with increasing ball charge conditions. The Rio Tinto Iron Ore group currently estimates grade attributes for mineral resources using ordinary kriging (OK). OK produces a smoothed globally unbiased estimate, but does not capture local variability, which can have significant impact on mine planning and scheduling. The dimensions and the multivariate nature of iron ore deposits make point simulations of whole deposits impractical. With a direct block simulation method the size and speed limitations of point simulations can potentially be overcome, resulting in a viable method for capturing local variability and for providing risk measures into the mine plan and schedules. Some iron ore deposits are highly folded (post mineralisation) and require preprocessing using an unfolding algorithm to properly define the continuity parameters and directions of anisotropy before simulation can proceed. Block co-simulation proceeds in unfolded space and since mine planning require a block-model with regular block-sizes; a regular block-model is unfolded first. This paper discusses a block co-simulation approach that can be used to simulate the irregular blocks resulting from the unfolding process. A section of an iron ore deposit is used for testing the block co-simulation algorithm and the simulation results are compared against the Isatis direct block simulation method. Available blasthole data is also used to validate the behaviour of the block co-simulation algorithm.

The Fimiston Open Pit (commonly referred to as the æSuper PitÆ) is a part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) operation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM manages the Fimiston Open Pit, the Mt Charlotte underground mine, the Fimiston Mill and the Gidji Roaster for its Joint Venture Owners, Newmont and Barrick Australia. KCGM produces up to 850 000 ounces of gold per year. The KCGM operations are located on the historical Golden Mile on the outskirts of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, about 600 kilometres east of Perth Western Australia. This traditionally underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding in excess of 50 Moz of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 g/t. This represents approximately ten per cent of the gold produced in Australia and one per cent of the gold produced in the world. The Fimiston Open Pit is essentially an aggregation of what were known as the Judd, South, Paringa, Croesus/Eclipse, Central, Brownhill, Drysdale, Morrison, North and Horseshoe pits into one continuous large-scale operation. The old Fimiston Underground Operations (included the Main, Croesus, Chaffers, Lake View, and Perseverance shafts) were also located within the area of the Fimiston Open Pit. The underground operations closed in 1992 due to high mining costs.

"Screw press technology is an innovative approach to tackling the growing pressure to conserve water and minimise the environmental impact of mineral tailings disposal. The principles of the technology have been known for a considerable period of time in non-mining applications such as water treatment, wastewater (municipal sludge), as well as in the paper and chemical industries for dewatering solids, particularly those containing clays.The screw press represents a viable niche technology for filtering fine and high-clay tailings, without the prior thickening stage, and is capable of producing a filtered product that is sufficiently consolidated and dry enough to provide a product suitable for conveying and dry stacking.The Ishigaki screw press was introduced in 1990 and key features are: continuous operation and excellent availability low wear to plant acceptable flocculant consumption low carbon footprint and low noise levels fully automatic.These features lead to simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, smaller footprint and overall lower capital and operating costs.The amenability of a particular tailing stream to treatment by screw press technology may be determined by test work. Two pilot plant studies are described where this technology has been applied in the mineral industry being flotation tailings from a rare earth (RE) mineral concentrator and coal tailings. It has been observed in several Jameson cell installations where the source for flotation feed is deslime screens, that the recovery of coal particles greater than 0.5 m is not as great as that of finer material. Consequently, a research project was undertaken at a CHPP in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, to assess the possibility of increasing the recovery of coarser particles (+0.5 mm) within the downcomer of the Jameson Cell. The effect of decreasing turbulence and agitation in a commercial-scale downcomer was investigated to assess the effect on the recovery of both coarse and fine coal particles. This paper details the findings of the testwork, summarising the results relating to differences in the operating parameters within the downcomer.

Queensland Pacific Metals (QPM) is progressing its Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub (TECH) project to produce nickel and cobalt sulfates for advanced battery materials. Apart from the nickel and cobalt sulfates, the process also generates a hematite by-product (~640 ktpa). The hematite byproduct precipitated from the process, hereafter ‘hematite precipitate’, is high in Fe and particularly low in impurities. However, it is a fine <20 μm crystalline, hydrometallurgical precipitate and is produced as a filter cake containing a high moisture content of about 15 per cent. This is considerably different from natural hematite ore and is expected to change its performance during sintering. In the present study, laboratory scale sintering tests were undertaken to evaluate the potential impacts of substitution of the hematite precipitate for traditional magnetite concentrates and further for Australian hematite-goethite ores in a simulated industry base blend. Substitution of hematite precipitate for magnetite concentrates was found to slightly increase the sintering temperature required to achieve the strength of laboratory sinters. However, further substitution of hematite precipitate for Australian hematite-goethite ores slightly reduced the sintering temperature required to achieve the laboratory sinter strength. These results reflect the reduction in Al2O3 contents of the blends and are consistent with the trend observed in industry and pilot scale facilities. The reduction in sintering temperature generally correlates to a reduction in fuel rate in the larger scale sintering process. The pore structure of selected laboratory sinters was further examined and discussed in conjunction with sinter strength. The pore structure images highlighted the relative difference between the blends with the most obvious difference being seen at 1290°C which correlates well with the laboratory tumble index (TI). The laboratory sinter samples showed an increase in porosity and irregularity of pore shape, as hematite substitution increased demonstrating the correlation between a more porous structure and a lower TI.

A cross-discipline approach combining geology, metallurgy and mine planning, geometallurgy is seen as the next logical advance in improving the design and operation of mining businesses. This rapidly evolving field is focused on realising the value that has often been lost in the chasms between the aforementioned technical silos. When successful, the geometallurgical approach promises the ability to tailor mining and mineral processing development and operational options more closely to the characteristics of the resource with resulting lower costs (both capital and operating), improved recoveries and fewer project failures.As with any technological (or managerial) change, there will be side effects from the success of the geometallurgical approach that will impact areas beyond obvious linkages between geology and processing. Some of these effects have the potential to be beneficial to the resource industry and society in general. Beyond the basic geometallurgical promise of closer alignment between processing design/strategy and the multivariate 3D spatial characteristics of the mineralisation, this paper discusses the broader implications and ramifications of the emergent geometallurgical approach: enhancing exploration and discovery; improving project development success; achieving sustainability in an industry working with non-renewable resources; in a world of increasingly hard won license to operate, improving the management of potentially harmful by-products and waste materials (with knock on effects for proactive management of closure issues); smarter approaches to energy management and thus optimisation of projects with respect to carbon footprint; and potential to re-value assets and thus realise a strategic advantage in the area of acquisitions, divestments, mergers and take overs. The authors strongly believe that companies that actively engage with the above issues (and ensure that technical efforts in the area of geometallurgy are not isolated from the larger value chain activities of the firm) will be able to exploit the opportunities that consequentially arise. These early adopters will gain first mover advantages. Firms taking the broad view of geometallurgy will have an opportunity to maximise stakeholder value and win greater success than their less insightful competitors.

THIS excellent volumetric method commends itself as a means of estimating the fineness of silver firstly, owing to the large number of possible impurities which do not affect its accuracy (these impurities include Cu-up to 70 % Au, Ph, Zn, Bi, Cd, Fe, Mn, Sb, and As); secondly, the method combines accuracy with speed. The above impurities are the only ones likely to be present in the B. H. A. S. Pty. Ltd. refined silver, and, with the exception of Cu and Au, the others, if present at all, would be well under 0.1 parts per 1000.Briefly stated, the method consists in the solution of the refined silver in HN03 , addition of ferric alum (indicator), and titration with an alkaline (either ammonium or potassium) thiocyanate solution until the brown ferric thiocyanate is formed, and gives a definite tint to the solution. The method is used at the Port Pirie smelters, and the outstanding feature in the method as there applied is the type of burette employed. This burette enables the operator to read 0.01 of a cc. with ease, whereas, with the ordinary burette fitted with a float, 0.05 of a cc., when a number of readings have to be taken, becomes very straining to the eyes. Moreover, waiting for the float to rise, and dislodging air bubbles from it, hinders rapid working.A description of the burette and fittings is appended with fig. 2. The Kanowna Belle gold mine is located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, approximately 18 km north-east of Kalgoorlie. The processing plant is designed to process 2 Mt/y and has the capability to treat both refractory and free milling ore from the Kanowna Belle and Kundana mining operations.The Kanowna Belle ore is refractory with the gold mineralisation occurring mostly as fine-grained inclusions in pyrite or as very fine-grained gold located in pyritic arsenic rich growth zones. The Kanowna Belle refractory process includes flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrate, and calcine leaching to extract the gold from the ore.Mineralogical analysis of feed and tailings streams from the flotation circuit have shown that the gold bearing minerals are well liberated and confirmed they are mainly associated with pyrite. Nearly 40% of the flotation circuit losses are in the -38 &#181;m size fraction. To improve the flotation circuit recovery, the fine particle gold recovery was targeted. A Cavitation Tube column was selected for the site-based pilot test work program. Iron ore screening plant productivity is strongly affected by the performance of the shuttle operation, with the control system robustness and associated strategies having a direct impact on utilisation and throughput rates. A number of aspects intrinsic to the methods and technologies traditionally applied on the motion control of shuttles are often observed to decrease the efficiency of the ore distribution process across multiple screening modules, which ultimately impacts the plant’s production. Those include the number of operational scenarios that are unmanaged by conventional discrete control logics which may intermittently lead to undesired events, such as ‘high level alarms’ and ‘low level interlocks’ in the screening bins. This outcome usually demands excessive manual intervention by Control Room Operators. A Reinforcement Learning (RL) Artificial Intelligence (AI) solution was deployed to control the motion operation of the scalping and products screening shuttles in an iron ore handling plant. The RL algorithm was trained in advance to handle multiple operational scenarios and generate optimised outputs. In nominal operation, the shuttles are moved in a modulating and highly predictive fashion over the whole range of safely reachable bins. When the need occurs, the AI control agent deviates from that modulation behaviour, limiting its travel range or moving to other groups or clusters of available bins by employing ‘bin jumping’ or ‘ore break’ strategies. The RL platform capabilities include the ability to learn in real time to account for and auto-adapt to new operational patterns and process changes whilst applying improved strategies for shuttle dwelling times, target setting and speed control. The deployed Reinforcement Learning AI solution has better managed the existing challenges associated with the shuttle operation and control, and resulted in a more efficient ore delivery process, superior operations stability and increased production rates.

RME has a vision for a new mill operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. This vision can be moved forward into reality at any time with or without guidance from recent development in measurement and predictive modelling tools.Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by optimising liners for life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to design new liners for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent changes of liners but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. This paper provides an update regarding RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System technologies and outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ model as a function of metal price, developed intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.

Newcrest Mining LimitedÆs Telfer Mine is a world-class gold and copper producer, situated in the Great Sandy Desert, in the north west of Western Australia. The mine has a number of distinctive characteristics such as being one of AustraliaÆs most remote mine sites, being within 270 km of the hottest town in the southern hemisphere (Marble Bar) and having been shut down and reopened after a two-year feasibility study. The construction of a new plant and reopening of the mine gave Newcrest the opportunity to review their mining practices and systems including the opportunity to incorporate reconciliation as a core process. Telfer is now well on the way to being one of the largest gold and copper concentrate producers in Australia. When the mine reopened in June 2003, Telfer implemented SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software system to facilitate reconciliation of geological models, production data and plant measurements. The system was implemented on site in June 2004, as a web-based information management system, integrating other existing mining and plant software packages. It continues to provide an auditable process and consistency of data, providing ease of analysis with standard and customised reporting. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation at Telfer. It outlines the consolidation of a number of management systems into one centralised system that can be used to compare and reconcile the tonnes and grades from the mine through to the mill. The authors outline the key estimates and measures that are used for reconciliation at Telfer, detailing the characteristics of the system used to capture the information and the benefits that have been gained through the use of a rigorous reconciliation process on a complex orebody.

Separation of fine and coarse particles as separate streams prior to flotation, and their differential treatments, could substantially increase recovery and reduce collector consumption. A series of simulations was carried out to quantify the benefits from plant scale implementation of such a treatment at the Ispat Inland flotation circuit (Minorca mine). The study involved detailed plant sampling and sample analysis to generate the data needed for simulation studies. Samples were taken from all the streams from flotation feed to final concentrate, as well as cell lips and cell pulp. Sampling was repeated for the second ore blend that was processed by the plant during different periods of a year. Sample analysis involved sieve analysis and size by size chemical analysis for total iron, magnetic iron and silica. Raw data were mass balanced, and flow rates within the circuit were calculated. Mass balanced data were used to calculate model parameters representing the existing conditions. Usim Pac was used for both mass balancing and simulation studies. Available pilot and bench scale data were utilised to define the modified flow sheet and expected performance. The simulated flow sheet included classification of flotation circuit feed by hydrocyclones. While the coarse fraction followed the existing flow sheet, the fine fraction was sent to a magnetic separator. Magnetic and rougher flotation concentrates were combined to form the final concentrate. Two simulations for each blend were carried out. The first one assumed that there would be no change in size by size kinetic behaviours of both gangue and magnetite due to this modification. This was named as the worst case scenario, in which particles had a longer residence time due to reduced flow rates within the flotation cells. The second scenario anticipated that there would be an increase in recoveries of gangue and magnetite going into froth launder due to more efficient use of collector in absence of fines. Results showed that pre-classification of flotation feed could improve the flotation recovery by 0.3 - 0.5 per cent, with the major benefit being significant reduction (40 - 60 per cent) in the amount of collector used.

The Reefton Goldfield has had the largest hard-rock gold production (64 t Au) on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, and is currently under renewed development by Oceana Gold. The gold predominantly occurs in variably sheared quartz veins that are associated with zones of tighter, shorter wavelength folds in the host Greenland Group metasediments. The quartz veins typically occur as a series of plunging shoots that align with specific fold limbs or fold hinge zones. Shear zones containing disseminated mineralisation and quartz veins have thickness variations that relate to the angular relationship between the shear and host-rock bedding. Exploration strategies and targeting can be developed around both types of structural control.

Benchmarking, comparing an operation or process with the industry standard, is known to be a useful method for identifying plant optimisation opportunities, and in many cases providing the pathway to realise the benefits. The difficulty is generating the database of plant data necessary for a benchmarking exercise. Larger companies can benchmark internally; this option is not available to smaller companies, and the full value can only be realised with a comprehensive “industry wide” approach.The Gold Technology Group at Curtin University through the AMIRA P420 series of projects has undertaken several comprehensive metallurgical industry surveys in the gold industry over the last two decades. Analysis of these surveys has demonstrated areas where many operations can benefit from re-assessment of their operating practices.This paper will review the work undertaken by the Group in this area, in particular the 1999 surveys of gold companies in the Australasian region, and the 2012 international survey of the industry. The challenges of, and opportunities arising from these surveys will be discussed. Newmont has had continuous production at their Ahafo operations, Ghana, since 2006. In 2013, Ahafo initiated an efficiency programme to improve mill performance and reduce energy consumption. Following this assessment, a Turbo Pulp Lifter (TPLTM) was installed in the Ahafo SAG mill in April 2015 to replace the existing radial pulp lifters. Plant operational data showed delivery of a power saving of 10 per cent, an improvement in throughput of 3.3 per cent, with no loss of grind size. Pulp lifter life was also doubled from 11 to 22 months.However, during subsequent relines when the grates were removed it was found that one in four of the outer pulp lifters were wearing at a faster rate than the remainder. This was investigated by Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling, which predicted some overtopping and internal recycle within the pulp lifter. Significantly, the model predicted that the recycled material would pass back down every fourth outer pulp lifter, matching the field observations. Subsequently, the DEM investigation was continued and became an R&amp;D project to improve the TPL design.
