Recent studies carried out to support the development of a strategy for the New Zealand mineral industry by the NZ Minerals Industry Association have included investigations of mineral potential, and the development of scenarios for realising this countryÆs mineral potential by 2010. New economic research is applying a general equilibrium model to quantify the opportunity cost of this potential. The model analyses separately four categories of land (private land and three categories of Crown land) and identifies four distinct mineral classes û precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and aggregate. It investigates the economic effect of the increased availability of mineral resources on the mining industry itself, on other industry sectors and on the NZ economy generally, including its impact on unemployment, GDP and household welfare.The analyses suggest that increases in the level of GDP of between 1.9 per cent and 3.4 per cent may be obtained by utilising New ZealandÆs mineral wealth to varying degrees. The mineral industry sectors are significant beneficiaries under all scenarios; mineral output increases by between two and five times its current level. However, the flow-on effects to the rest of the economy, and to households, are also significant. The analyses show that household income, adjusted for changes in consumer prices, can be expected to increase by between 1.6 per cent and 2.7 per cent. This results largely from increased employment.

This paper describes how Brisbane-based PanAust Limited develops process control strategies that are implemented at all operations and are used in functional descriptions for plant upgrades and new projects.The process control strategies are determined by operating management philosophies designed to maximise returns from the company’s assets.The approach is endorsed in the project planning and design phases to ensure facilities and equipment that form the major production assets are fit for purpose and capable of enabling the production managers and operators of the projects to maximise shareholder returns.PanAust’s process control approach has been to develop sets of process control standards which focus on two key areas. The first area covers hardware requirements and architecture, software objectives, control models and individual loop tuning methods. The second area defines control room layout, graphic standards and the alarm philosophy. The application of these standards in a new plant or upgrade decreases the time required to achieve design capacity and optimal performance.The PanAust process control strategy changes the operator’s role from one that controls a number of individual loops to one that sets the control objectives of the processing plant. To achieve optimal performance, all the process areas of the plant are analysed to identify opportunities to improve throughput, recovery and stability. Once a key opportunity is identified, a process control strategy is developed which defines the objective of the control, its functionality and how an operator will interact with it. After development of the control model the operators assist engineers to test and debug it. The presence of coal in the Sydney area was confirmed in 1891 when Cremorne Bore No. I intersected cindered coal at 1 854 m. The decision to develop Sydney Harbour Colliery was based on the results of Cremorne Bore No. 2 (drilled in 1892) in which a 3.12 m. seam of unaltered coal was encountered at 889 m. Geologists from the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources consider that this seam is probably equivalent to an upper split of the Bulli seam. Long Cove at Balmain was selected by Sydney Harbour Collieries Ltd. as the site for mine development in 1896. This was due to opposition to the proposed establishment of a colliery on the north shore of Port Jackson near Cremorne. Construction of the main access and ventilation shafts (termed Birth- day and Jubilee), other mine infrastructure and the quay wall occurred between 1897 and 1902. A fatal accident in which five men were killed occurred during the construction of the Birthday Shaft in 1900. This acci- dent resulted in amendments to the Mining Act providing for guide rails in shafts.

The introduction reviews the tunnelling carried out in Singapore since the early 1980s. Between 1983 and 1990, Phases 1 and 2 of the mass rapid transit system were constructed. These included some 20 km of bored and cut and cover tunnels together with 18 underground stations. Some particular points of interest in this massive project are briefly commented upon. Reference is also made to other underground or underwater schemes undertaken during this period such as the proposed large caverns project and the submerged tunnel to Pulau Seraya. A description of the subsurface works, now under construction in Singapore, follows. This includes an all underground North-East railway line 20 km long with 16 stations. At a budget of US$ 3 billion, this is a major civil engineering undertaking. Another project is the extension of the railway to Changi Airport which involves 3.5 km of twin tube tunnelling together with a major underground station which is fully integrated into the airport terminals. An on-going program of further major railway extensions over the next 10 to 15 years is in place and an outline is given of some of the most important underground sectors. Other proposed projects such as the underground roads system and the deep level sewers are briefly described. Together they demonstrate the very significant volume of underground construction scheduled for the next century in Singapore.

Enterprise Mine at Mount Isa is to expand ore production from the current 1.4 to 3.5 mtpa by mining the 3500 Orebody, from which production is scheduled to start in February 1998 making this the deepest underground mine in Australia with its lowest mining horizon at nearly 1.6 km below surface. The following fill requirements were defined for the 3500 Orebody during the feasibility study: a minimum filling rate of 250 m3/h, a curing time of 28 days, and minimum free fill water. This paper mainly describes the investigation of high density and paste fills for the 3500 Orebody. The investigation covered all the key issues relating to fill option selection, including design criteria, material supply and demand assessment, drainage modelling, tailing dewatering method, mix design and a pump loop test. Results of the investigation indicate that both high density fill and paste fill are technically feasible. The investigation has led to the selection of a blended tailing paste for the 3500 Orebody as the paste option has significant advantages over high density fill in stope filling rates and fill reticulation. The blended tailing for paste fill is finer than Isa deslimed tailing but coarser than full plant tailing. The paste fill selected has minimum binder and tailing dewatering requirements while a relatively high filling rate is achieved.

Epithermal vein and breccia hosted Au mineralisation at the Kerimenge prospect, in the Wau district, Papua New Guinea, occurs within a block of multiply fractured dacite porphyry of Pliocene age, and is localised on intersecting regional fault structures, marginal to the eroded vent of a Late Pliocene-Pleistocene maar volcano (diatreme).Au mineralisation is primarily controlled by the steeply dipping Kerimenge Fault zone, which hosts a basal zone of silicified breccias,transitional laterally and vertically to networks of fracture controlled veins.Early quartz+pyrite veins, deposited from CO2 rich, NaCl saturated, boiling fluids pre-date the main phase of Au mineralisation. Four stages of Au bearing vein mineralisation have beenrecognised. Quartz+sulphide veins (stage 1) and partially coeval quartz+sulphide+carbonate+ adularia veins (stage 2) occur marginal to silicified breccias, and are associated with quartz+sericite+pyrite wallrock alteration. Similar depositional conditions prevailed for stage 1 and stage 2 mineralisation. Mineralising fluids underwent two stage boiling at temperatures of 145 to 2300 C. Boiling resulted in the loss of approximately 3 wt.% CO to the vapour phase. 2 Fluid salinity was probably I wt.% NaCl or less.

Mining in the state of Western Australia (WA) formally commenced in the 1840s, and over the ensuing 180 years has evolved to be the epicentre of the Australian mining industry and a significant contributor to the national economy. The lithology of WA is replete with mineralisation that hosts uranium and ‘critical minerals’ required for the global renewable energy sector. The state’s first uranium mine is under development, and high levels of activity are occurring in the state’s nascent critical minerals sector, with 168 WA-based companies pursuing rare earth-bearing minerals, 51 of which are actively drilling on their tenements. WA’s mineral deposits typically contain levels of the naturally occurring radionuclides (NORs) thorium-232 and uranium-238 that are elevated above the global crustal average. Workers are exposed to NORs during the mining and mineral extraction processes, and radiation doses that exceed applicable exposure standards may eventuate. The research traces the history of worker radiation doses from 1977 to 2020, finding the maximum dose was 163.4 mSv, more than eight times the current derived annual dose limit. Whilst 93.5 per cent of all workers received doses of less than 5.0 mSv per annum, the potential for elevated doses is ever-present as witnessed by 10.3 mSv reported in 2009/2010. The increase in activity coincides with a revision of the dose coefficients (DCs) associated with the intake of radionuclides. The research evaluates the revised DCs and forecasts doses from inhalation of radioactive dusts will nearly double, and lead to workers receiving doses exceeding 5 mSv for the first time since 2009/2010. The research finds that the current regulatory framework is fit-for-purpose. However, inter-agency relationships, and the capacity of the regulator to effectively regulate the current and future number of mining operations is questioned. The mining industry is vulnerable to capability and capacity constraints – but has failed to respond to issues in relation to competent radiation safety officers first raised by the Winn Inquiry (Winn, Mathews and Tough, 1984). Disconcertingly, monitoring of worker exposures to NORs reached a nadir in 2021, raising questions as to the veracity of worker doses reported to the regulatory agency. The research recommends personal dust sampling be prioritised.

Treatment methods for a low grade deposit at Mt. Fitch near Rum Jungle, N.T., were investigated. Physical beneficiation of the ore, sulphuric acid leaching, carbonate leaching and various methods of uranium extraction from the leach liquor were studied. Although the deposit occurs in a carbonate environment, acid leaching of the ore after beneficiation by radiometric sorting appears to be the most economic treatment method. Uranium would be recovered from the leach liquor by solvent extraction.

Unnamed early prospectors panned gold from creeks drain- ing the Great Dividing Range in the early part of 1851. The first publicised discovery was credited to Edward Hargraves near Bathurst in New South Wales later in 1851 and during the ensu- ing gold rush, prospectors rapidly made discoveries elsewhere in New South Wales and later across the border in Victoria. Reference to the attached graphs of gold production indicates that for much of the first 100 years, gold production came from the easily worked and readily discovered shallow alluvial deposits, many of which were located in the creeks draining mountainous regions of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland (Fig. 1 and 2). As these deposits were exhausted, prospectors turned their attention to outcrop lode deposits which led to the development of underground mining techniques and a significant boost in over- all gold production. With the discovery of the rich Golden Mile lodes in Kalgoorlie in 1893, gold production increased signifi- cantly and peaked around the turn of the century. At that time, the enormous potential of the great Witwatersrand deposits in South Africa had only just been appreciated and for a few years, Australia led the world in gold production (1855-1863 and again in 1903). Underground mining continued in the Eastern Goldfields area of Western Australia, the Bendigo-Ballarat region of Victoria and in northeast Queensland. Very few of these operations continued beyond the Second World War, except the larger producers in the Kalgoorlie region where recovered grade had dropped to about 6 g/t Au. By the early 1970s with the gold price fixed at US$35 per ounce, most of the operations were shut down as labour costs escalated, with only the low cost bulk mining operation at Mt. Charlotte and the high grade reefs at Norseman continuing in Production.

The appropriate design of liners continues to be an issue on many mills worldwide. Loss of milling capacity especially at liner change, uneven wear lives along the mill, substantial scrap on worn liners, excess mill down-time, undesirably short and unreliable wear lives are all common issues. This paper presents a designed approach to liner optimisation that follows a logical path of initial design and step-wise improvements based on liner wear monitoring. The target is to have a good liner design from start-up, then tune the profiles, heights and thicknesses based on wear monitoring. This is conducted as a team of liner specialist, site personnel and liner supplier. The application to the Pustynnoye SAG mill of JSC Altynalmas in Kazakhstan is presented. Mineral sand orebodies are typically mined for their TiO2 content. Increasingly over the past 30 years, the major mineral focus has shifted from natural rutile to ilmenite and an acceptance that the latter generally needs some form of upgrading for economic conversion into TiO2 pigment. This upgrading obviously has a cost, and in conjunction with diminishing mineable feed grades, results in higher cost TiO2 units for chloride route Pigment Plant feedstocks. The net cost of feedstock can be significantly influenced by the recovery and sale of accessory minerals and by-products from the processing chain to the extent that some producers have the potential to achieve a zero net cost. Whilst slagging plants typically reduce net cost from rutile, zircon and pig iron revenues, operations supporting Becher type synthetic rutile operations have been limited to revenues from rutile and zircon only. A range of alumino silicate minerals show industrial potential, as does activated carbon, iron oxide and gypsum, by-products of the synthetic rutile process. Tiwest is a good example of a company maximising revenue from the accessory minerals as well as from by-products of the synthetic rutile process.

Ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopic analyses and the extended lluckel molecular orbital method were applied to determine the electronic and binding states of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and the adsorption system of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole on pyrite. 2-mercaptobenzothiazole exists rather in thione form than in thiol forru and the two adsorption peaks in solution were assigned to both 7t--?rt* transitions. 2-mercaptobenzothiazole chemically adsorbs on pyrite mainly due to forming the bond between iron (pyrite) and sulphur (2-mercaptobenzothiazole).

The Ranger Uranium Mine is located in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics approximately 250 km east of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia (Figure 1). Mining of open-cut ore bodies commenced in 1980 (Pit 1) and ceased in 2012 (Pit 3) and milling and production are scheduled to cease by 2021. At the conclusion of mining and milling operations, mine tailings will be returned to the mined out pits 1 and 3, which must then be physically isolated from the environment for at least 10,000 years (Australian Government 1999). The final landform also needs to have sufficient mitigation measures in place to ensure that areas downstream are not impacted by erosion products from the mine site. The proposed post-mining rehabilitated landform will cover approximately 847 hectares (8.5 km2) which represents an area that has the potential to supply sediment to catchments and streams downstream. One method of reducing runoff and associated sediment is the construction of rip lines along the contour to slow down the runoff velocity and to also trap fine sediment and nutrients in the depressions to assist vegetation growth.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Lowry, J B C, 2018. In a recently completed AMIRA project, 20 samples were searched for gold mineralisation using the automated location facility (ALF) for rare phases on a scanning electron microscope in the CSIRO Division of Mineral Products, Melbourne. The samples were submitted by mining companies in Australia, and Papua New Guinea, and included crushed ore samples, cyclone overflow and underflow products, a flotation concentrate, and 12 tailing samples. Their gold contents ranged from 600 to 0.2 g/t An. Native gold and gold minerals including a gold telluride, gold-silver tellurides, and a gold bismuth mineral, were located in the samples as free grains and associated with other minerals such as pyrite, magnetite, hematite, ankerite, copper sulphides, silicate minerals, and quartz. In the highest grade samples, both micron sized and 200 ¦m grains of gold were found with ALF. It would be difficult to locate such d wide size range of gold in a manual search. Gold mineralisation was located in the tailing samples assaying 0.4 g/t An and higher. In several tailing samples coarse grains of native gold over 40 p.m in size were located. One grain was estimated to have contributed 40 per cent of the gold in the sample. As well as locating gold mineralisation, the ALF examination resulted in the identification of uranium, mercury, and bismuth minerals in the samples. Knowledge of the distribution of these minerals in processing streams could be important in the operation of a concentrator.

Basic principles of stack injection are outlined and supported by calculations of thermal, chemical and aerodynamic requirements of an ideal 4000 tpd furnace. Calculated results show that these requirements vary with conversion of FeO, and that best performance may be expected with XFeO = 1.0 for which calculated production is 6919 tpd and coke rate is only 211 kg/thm. Calculations are also presented for a cycled injection. Discussions show that stack injection is a good way of overcoming softening problems and meeting the demand for iron in a fluctuating demand situation when it exceeds the maximum capacity of a furnace.

In some deposits valuable heavy mineral quality is poor due to increased mineral surface coatings from higher slimes and more competent sand orebodies. Mineral surface coating can include silica or aluminium rich clay minerals and iron based minerals that render the final product quality off-specification, in this case specifically ilmenite and zircon. Conventional physical beneficiation processes such as magnetic separation, electrostatic separation and gravity separation are not able to remove these surface coatings. Surface dependent separation techniques such as electrostatic separators are affected by these coatings which hinders the rejection of non-valuable mineral from product. Attrition scrubbing is the most commonly used technique to reduce surface coatings, using mechanically induced particle to particle interaction, abrasion and shearing.In many cases it is a challenge to measure the surface removal efficiency of these scrubbing units. Elemental analysis techniques (ie X-ray flourescence) (XRF) in a multi mineral environment are unable to measure surface impurity reduction with enough precision. Mineralogical analysis (in this case Qemscan®) has constraints in terms of sample preparation with highly coated particles being plucked out during block polishing. This paper suggests a combination of laboratory separation techniques coupled with elemental analysis to evaluate the surface removal efficiency. Three different types of feed materials were used to analyse the efficiency of surface removal using production attritioner scrubbers. This approach relates the downstream beneficiation plant’s expected performance with that of the attrition scrubber’s scrubbing efficiency.

So I asked the driver, where did they get that name? `Oh,' he said, `from some people who built a house there. That was it's name- Duntroon.' It strikes a note with me because, that's the name of a 12th century castle on the west coast of Scotland where I spend what leisure hours I have and, therefore, it establishes the long connection between Australia and my native land. There is also a story I should tell you about the oil industry and its upsurge in Scotland recently which has resulted in great prosperity. And in Edinburgh, the walls of the banks are bulging-because of the incursion of foreign exchange and other resources.

Research in the field of cut-off grade optimisation has shown a relationship between cut-off grade, project life and net present value (NPV). Lane’s theory demonstrates that cut-off grades can be optimised in order to maximise project profitability. Although the theory forms the basis for many open pit mining projects, application of the theory in underground mining remains limited to-date. The main reason for this is the complex interaction between all processes in underground mine planning, which makes it difficult to apply Lane’s mathematical optimisation approach.Recently a new stope optimiser product was released. The AMS Stope Optimiser automates the design of underground stopes at user-defined cut-off grades and allows for rapid evaluation of mine designs at different cut-off grades. Using this software, an optimisation approach was developed and validated on an underground gold deposit in northern Sweden. Potential project NPV increased by approximately 30 per cent when using this new approach.Spatial grade uncertainty in mineral resources was identified to be a major risk in underground stope design. The optimisation approach was further extended to account for grade risk using estimated and stochastic simulated resource models. Spiral concentrators are gravity based separation devices used for the preparation of coal, iron and heavy mineral ores (Wills, 1992). Gravity concentration remains the main separation method for fine iron ore and is used extensively for treating many minerals. Gravity concentration methods separate minerals of different specific gravity by their relative movement in response to gravity and one or more other forces, the latter often being the resistance to motion offered by a viscous fluid such as water or air (Wills, 2006).The main operating variables for a spiral concentrator are the feed rate, the slurry concentration, the wash water addition and the position of the splitters used to separate the tailings, middlings and concentrate streams (Sadeghi, Bazin and Renaud, 2014). Wash water is an important control variable used to wash away entrapped light minerals from the concentrate stream (Burt, 1984; Bouchard, 2001). Sadeghi et al concluded the spiral operation to be sensitive to the wash water flow addition and resultant economic trade-off. Increasing the wash water flow rate increases the concentrate grade at the expense of the iron recovery.The paper addresses the effects of dripping wash water onto the concentrate stream of a spiral processing fine iron ore. The dripping wash water system offers a low flow alternative and could possibly provide a good balance between grade and recovery of valuable minerals without using excessive water. The Multotec SC20HC/7 WW spiral was used for the experimental test work. The spiral was tested at varying solids concentrations; the wash water rate and the splitter positions were kept constant.The use of wash water at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration improved the Fe grade in the concentrate by about 1.5 per cent, six per cent and eight per cent respectively. The additional SiO2 rejected by the wash water is approximately three per cent, nine per cent, and 11 per cent at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration respectively. Addition of wash water is shown to have minimum effect on grade at 30 per cent solid concentration, and Fe upgrades obtained with and without wash water were found to be similar. Notable upgrades were observed at 35 and 40 per cent solid concentration with wash water. The results obtained suggest that the additional SiO2 rejection by wash water increases with an increase in solid concentration. This suggests that the benefit of using the drip system is notable at higher solid concentration. It is believed that at lower solid concentration SiO2 particles are reasonably free to move around and are possibly less entrapped than at high solid concentration.The Fe grade/recovery and solid concentration relationship with wash water showed a non-linear correlation. The Fe grade increases with an increase in solid concentration up to a somewhat optimum point and then drops as solid concentration increases further. The recovery of Fe on the other hand follows a converse relationship with solid concentration, the recovery decreases from 30 per cent to 35 per cent solid concentration and then increases again at 40 per cent solid concentration. The increase in recovery at higher solid concentration could possibly be explained by the fact that the mass yield to concentrate also increases with solid concentration. Since recovery is a function of both grade and mass yield, the higher recovery at 40 per cent solid concentration is likely due to the high mass yield obtainable at 40 per cent solid concentration.The drip system could therefore possibly offer a safe guarding against grade and solid concentration variations without using excessive water, and possibly ensure that a product within specification is maintained.CITATION:Ramotsabi, C M, Erasmus, W and Bornman, F, 2015. The mining industry is facing a variety of geological, technological and social challenges. Future deposits show a general tendency towards increasing depth with complex ores and decreasing grades. One promising approach to deal with low-grade ores is bioleaching in the form of heap and dump operations. Bioleaching is already a state-of-the-art technique, especially for the extraction of copper from sulfide ores. The next step in the development of this technology will be its application as an in situ technology. First attempts to adapt this technology in underground mining in the form of stoping and block caving have already been made. Both methods have to be carried out adjacent to conventional mining operations and therefore require much effort regarding drift development as well as extraction and transport. The adaption of bioleaching as a borehole mining method is the next step to establish an innovative in situ technique to meet future challenges.The Freiberg University of Mining and Technology established the Biohydrometallurgical Centre for Strategic Elements (BHMZ) to foster interdisciplinary research along the whole biohydrometallurgical process chain. In general, 13 different university institutes and several associated groups with about 30 PhD students are mainly focusing on the extraction of indium and germanium from deposits, tailings and recycling material. One of the core projects within the BHMZ is the design and implementation of an underground in situ bioleaching testing facility.This paper demonstrates the potential of in situ bioleaching under technological aspects.
