In heavy mineral sands ilmenite, rutile and zircon are present in economic concentrations. These minerals are important sources of Fe, Ti and Zr for various industrial uses. The beach sands of northern KwaZulu-Natal, along the Zululand Indian Ocean coastline in South Africa, have been mined for 30 years. The various processes involved in mining and processing these minerals have been controlled by time-consuming and labour-intensive analysis methods which, in some cases, can be replaced by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD)-Rietveld analysis. Heavy minerals are concentrated in the plant to produce a heavy mineral concentrate (HMC). The heavy mineral extraction plant is controlled and informed of the proportions of minerals in the HMC according to their magnetic susceptibility. The different fractions are called magnetic, paramagnetic and non-magnetic fractions and quality control is based on their magnetic fraction weights combined with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis. This current quality control process is very time consuming and labour intensive. We have aimed to show that we can, by XRD, identify and quantify all the minerals in the HMC and also in the magnetic separations. These results are then compared with results obtained by Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) as well as with the results from the physical separation. It was possible to detect all minerals present in the material by XRD and use the Rietveld method for a full bulk mineral quantification. A maximum of 15 minerals can be included in the Rietveld refinement due to computational restraints. Major minerals detected are rutile, ilmenite and zircon and minor minerals are quartz, epidote, anatase, amphibole, monazite, magnetite, titanite and augite. The XRD and MLA results correlate relatively well and detailed results will be presented for HMC and magnetic fraction samples. Small differences were observed for some minerals due to the different ways in which minerals are detected or due to preparation methods within each method. Rutile seems to be more abundant in the XRD analysis and the detection of Anatase is possible by XRD, but not MLA. Leucoxene (consisting of mainly microcrystalline anatase, rutile and titanite is not detectable by XRD since it is not a mineral, but ilmenite alteration phases are observed instead. There is, however, a correlation between anatase, titanite and rutile detected by XRD and leucoxene analysed by MLA.

There is a strong focus in the mining industry to limit its impact on water quality and usage. This is even more evident in developing countries, where mining companies operate within local communities and have to be diligent not to affect them negatively. In mineral processing operations, the vast majority of water reclamation occurs at the tailings thickener area and tailings storage dam. It is often more effective to maximise water recovery at the tailings thickener before material transport to the tailings dam. Tailing dams are relatively inefficient, and experience a high degree of water loss due to evaporation, seepage and water retention. In addition, tailings dams present the biggest environmental liability for mineral resource projects, so it is beneficial to limit their size and loading.In the past, it was common for tailings thickener areas to have a significant footprint with several large diameter conventional thickeners, producing underflows of between 45-55% solids (w/w). At times, these multiple thickeners were difficult to operate, leading to inefficiencies in water recovery and quality. The development of High-Rate Thickeners (HRT) has resulted in improved settling properties and HRTs usually operate at significantly higher solids loadings (= 1.2 t/m2.h) when compared to conventional thickeners (= 0.1 t/m2.h). Subsequently, thickener diameters have reduced in size and HRT technology has become the preferred option for thickener circuit design in both new and existing operations. HRTs also produce higher water recoveries with increased underflow densities = 55% solids (w/w).The Carmen Copper Corporation (“Carmen Copper”) circuit upgrade is a recent example of these HRT benefits, where one, 39 m diameter, Outotec HRT treats the solids flow rate of five 76 m diameter conventional thickeners. This has allowed operations to increase dry plant tonnage by 50%, maintain key performance targets and provide a framework for further plant expansion. This paper deals chiefly with the preliminary examination, when a decision has to be made as to whether a prospect has a chance of developing into a mine or not. At this stage it is important to have a fairly clear conception of what is expected of the prospect, andjust what type of mine is sought. Much money can be wasted testing a prospect suitable for a prospector or small syndicate, but which never looked like becoming a mine of sufficient size to interest a company. When undertaking an inspection, therefore, it is necessary to have a broad outline, at least, of the policy of the principals for whom the report is intended.At this early stage it is frequently necessary to form an opinion of the prospects of a property on very meagre data. When new to this type of work one's first reaction is often th~t it is impossible to pass an opinion on the data available. It. is absolutely necessary,however, that an opinion of the possibilities and chances of favourable development be given; The report should strive to convey this information, making quite ::lear the risk involved, how complete are the data on which this opinion is based, and the possible magnitude of the prize. A Preliminary report has to state whether a property has sufficient prospects to warrant testing.The following procedure is suggested in order to make best use of the data and minimise hasty conclusions influenced by preconceived ideas-an ever-present danger.Examination.The first stage is the examination. This should aim at collecting all available significant data, but avoid clouding the issue with detail which, at this stage, will not affect the decision. The following points are considered to be the main ones for which to look:-Geological Environment.As good a working knowledge as possible'of the geology of the area should be obtained. Government Geological Survey reports and maps, if available, will be a big help. A detailed knowledge of the regional geology is not necessary a,t this stage, but a broad outline of the geological setting of the prospect under review, and also of any other important mines in the district, is often helpful in the final decision.The Nature of the Ore-Body.Any facts concerning the nature or occurrence of the lode should be noted as, coupled with experience of similar bodies, they affect the ultimate decision.Structural Control.This is probably the most important factor, in the light of present geological knowledge. Its chief importance is due to two facts:-(a) Structure plays one of the prime parts in ore deposition.(b) Geological knowledge, of structure is somewhat in advance of knowledge of other factors influencing ore deposition.

Multistage slag treatment was carried out to investigate boron removal from metallurgical grade silicon. Boron is known to be one of the most difficult elements to remove from silicon. Depending on boron initial concentration, boron can be removed from silicon into certain level; most previous studies have attained final 50–100 ppmw (parts per million weight) boron in the silicon using slag treatment. The term ‘multistage’ refers to a process where the resulting silicon from the initial slag treatment is further refined multiple times using a new slag. In this study, an initial slag composition of 45CaO-45SiO2-10Al2O3 (wt per cent) was utilised. Using this technique, boron level in the silicon was expected to be gradually lowered because the new slag will always have more capacity to reach the equilibrium distribution coefficient (LB = (ppmwB)slag/(ppmwB)Si). The current study was carried out through combined thermodynamic calculations (using FactSage™ ver 8.2, by Thermfact Ltd, thermochemical package) and high-temperature experimentation. The thermodynamic calculations were carried out for reactions at 1500, 1550, and 1600°C for three different scenarios: 1. Single stage refining with varied slag to Si ratio. 2. Multistage refining with slag to Si ratio of 1:1. 3. Multistage refining with slag to Si ratio of 2:1. The multistage experimental work was carried out at 1550°C under inert gas atmosphere each time for 2 hrs, with slag to Si ratio of 2:1. The simulation results indicate that the boron distribution coefficient stay essentially constant with varying slag to Si ratio and temperature, around 1.8 to 2, and the experimental results measured LB in the same range, between 1.5 and 2.5. By harnessing this feature, the simulation showed that boron can be removed by approximately 78 per cent in each stage. The experimental result confirmed that the boron concentration in the silicon was reduced by a total of 97.8 per cent from its initial value using four stages of slag treatment, from initial 270 ppmw down to 6 ppmw.

EMF measurements were performed in the temperature range of 933-1095 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead and lead-tin alloys with tin in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 6 atom per cent. The oxygen in the Pb-O system was varied by equilibrating with (PbO) slag, and that in the Pb-O-Sn system was varied with the addition of lead oxide. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to evaluate the self interaction parameter and ternary interaction parameters at different temperatures, to yield: E8(pb) = 97.35 - 113.27 x 103/t Eo(pb) = 139 - 20.616 x104/1' Quasichemical formulation was employed to yield Inf to reveal the effect of tin on oxygen in lead. Results have been predicted on the basis of classical models and those obtained using the QCT approach of Alcock and Richardson at Z=2 have been found to agree with the experimental Data.

Every automatic citizen is an automatic recipient of a miner's right under the present Mining Act (Chapter 195), but this alone does not entitle any automatic citizen to mine for minerals on any land, even his customary group's land. Without complying with requirements of the Mining Act, any automatic citizen who engages in mining solely on the basis of a miner's right would be mining illegally. He would also be engaged in illegal mining if he mines on customary or other non-government land. Even if mining is legally pursued by an automatic citizen, he does not acquire ownership of minerals without first making the required royalty payments to the State.

With depth, many gold ores become sulfidic with minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite becoming prevalent. In addition, many underground gold mines use tailings backfill to bind and store the waste. In these cases, acid mine drainage (AMD) can become an issue. One approach to the control of AMD is desulfurisation whereby the sulfide minerals are removed prior to disposal. Four sulfide tailings samples, representing different ore types and gold and base metal operations, were selected for assessment and testing using simple physical beneficiation techniques. The aim was to determine the extent to which mineral processing methods were suitable for separating sulfides from non-sulfides and for extracting potentially marketable by-products from the tailings. In order to streamline the testing procedure a simple diagnostic separation technique was developed to enable quick screening of bulk sulfide tailings for suitability for reprocessing. The testing procedure involved detailed characterisation and a sequential set of testing regimes based on simple unit processes including water washing, classification, gravity concentration, magnetic separation and bulk flotation. The preliminary test results indicate each unit process can play an important part in producing effective sulfide/non-sulfide separations and in generating useful by-products from the tailings. Potential valuable products identified include coarse, benign silica sands, bulk iron sulfide products rich in pyrite and/or pyrrhotite, high-grade iron products (magnetite) low in silica, low-volume bulk sulfide concentrates and low-grade molybdenite and talc products. The work presented shows how sulfide tailings can be viewed as a resource rather than a waste stream, and identifies a pathway for developing a more sustainable approach to the environmental management of sulfide tailings for the future.

All commercially available zircon sands contain radioactivity sourcing from the decay of trace amounts of contained uranium (U) and thorium (Th). The fine particle size zircons of the Horsham area in the Murray Basin region of Victoria, Australia, contain significantly more (about twice) Th+U than those commercial zircon sands. The marketability of these fine-grained zircon sands is likely to rely on the removal of these radioactive impurities. CSIRO Minerals have been working for some time to develop processes for the removal of the radioactive impurities from zircon. It is generally agreed that it is quite impossible to leach U and Th from zircon, however, the Heat and Leach (HL) process, described in detail in Aral and McDonald (1999), reduces the radionuclide levels significantly. The identified (HL) process aims to leach uranium and thorium selectively from a decomposed zircon. The novelty of the process is that a large part of the leached product can be reconstituted to a low radiation zircon by a subsequent heat treatment. The HL process uses a flux mixture of sodium carbonate and calcium borate to decompose the zircon at relatively low temperatures (900 to 1150¦C) and a weak acid (0.5M HNO3; 80¦C/0.5 h; pulp density ten per cent) to leach the radionuclides selectively. The process leaves the major components (ZrO2 and SiO2) behind with little loss. The HL process for example lowers the U+Th content of a Murray Basin zircon from 1000 ppm to 400 ppm U+Th. Among the radionuclides more U progeny is removed than the Th series radionuclides. This is very significant as the radioactivity of U series is 2.5 times more that from the Th series. Therefore the reduction in the radioactivity level of zircon is more than the reduction in Th+U indicated by XRF analysis. A schematic flow sheet of the HL process is shown in Figure 1. Although the HL process successfully lowers the radionuclide levels in zircon sands, the final product contains significant amounts of sodium (up to 14 per cent Na2O) and small amounts of CaO. By comparison, the sodium content of the commercial zircon sands is in general 2O. Zircon is used mainly as an opacifier in tile glazing where the addition of ten to 15 per cent zircon to a translucent base glaze gives the sanitary white colour to the tile surface. Opacification is the result of the refractoriness of zircon particles at the glaze firing temperatures that is generally around 1050¦C.

This paper describes an apparatus which was developed to study solid-vapour equilibria and presents results which were obtained during a study of the FeCI3-AlCI3-CI2 system. Analysis of the results showsthat fractional desublimation might offer a means of achieving a useful separation of the iron and aluminium chlorides produced by the chlorination of bauxite. The results, presented in the form of isothermal vapour pressure curves covering the range of temperature 160-200°C, support the earlier findings of Semenenko et al (Dokl Akad Nauk SSSR, 154: 42-43 (1964)) that the solid phase contains two terminal solid solutions.The equilibrium constant for the formation of the mixed dimer, FeAICI6, was approximately 4. The latent heat of sublimation of aluminium chloride varied from 18 to 26 kcal/mole AI2CI6 for solid compositionsfrom 0.9 to 0·5 mole fraction FeCls3.

A quantitative chemical model of the rocks of the Broken Hill lode environment is presented to illustrate a stratiform orebody in a meaningful form to scientists interested in environmental control on the chemicalcomposition of sediments.Even though this study was restricted by the narrow range of rock analyses available it is obvious that significant chemical differences exist between the various rock units and also that some association of metallic sulphides with Ca, Mn, Fe, and P is indicated.Correlation of this evidence with that from other mining fields may point out more definite chemical relationships and elucidate the puzzle of the mode of formation of many stratiform orebodies.

The mineral industry is an important element in the human environment and in varying degrees contributes to the general standard of living throughout most of the world, both by supplying the basic materials required for heavy industry, transportation, construction, scientific equipment, and many labour saving tools and also by its contribution to the international economy.When projecting population growth and per capita resource utilization against a finite amount of nonrenewable mineral resources, it is apparent that at some future time, if the established trend continues, the supply of industrial minerals will progressively become exhausted according to their relative scarcity and world demand.In one way or another all of nature's mineral resources are used in the sel'vice of man. Some of the products of their manufacture are essential to the survival and further development of our civilization, others are luxuries, desirable but not essential. Marine vessels are essential to maintain a flow of resollrces around the world, and as trade increases the size of the fleet will grow and the quantities of metals needed will be greater.The commodities they transport, may be used in an inefficient or extravagant manner causing unnecessary depletion which may adversely affect the activities of future generations. An example that comes readily to mind is fuel oil, the international transport of which uses a vast tanker fleet. When refined, large quantities of motor spirit are used in motor vehicles. The U.S.A. alone uses 70 billion gallons annually in the 90,000,000 automobiles in use.Much of this is used in private cars-of which there is one for every 2'3 people-for transport between home and city. Well organized community transport would serve the same purpose, conserve a scarce commodity, take some of the stress out of livingdriving in a major city can hardly be considered a relaxing experience-and minimize the problem of atmospheric pollution.Whilst man has demonstrated his great versatility...

Copper in zinc/lead sinter charged to the Imperial Smelting Furnace operated by Sulphide Corporation Pty Limited at Cockle Creek, New South Wales, concentrates in a complex lead dross which forms as the bullion is cooled to around 400°C. The 0.35 mm portion of this dross, containing approximatelY 67 per cent of the total copper, is treated via a hydrometallurgical route to produce 5000 tonne/yr of CuSO4 5H2O crystal.Around 3000 tonne/yr of copper-lead dross containing 49 per cent copper is leached at 55°C in continuous leach reactors with ammoniacal ammonium carbonate leach liquors to convert copper to soluble copper amine complexes. Leach ettlciencies of 80-85 per cent are obtained. Leach residues are repulped with ammoniacal liquid diluents from the plant and heated in a four stage steam distillation unit to reduce ammonia levels to between 0.5 and 1.0 g/Iitre. The resultant slurry is directed to an effluent treatment plant for final treatment, and separation and return of solids to the sinter plant.Copper is extracted from leach liquor by solvent extraction techniques based on the use of L1X 54 diluted 3:1 with Shellsol 2046 to give a nominal copper loading of 30 g/litre. The loaded organic is contacted with a sulfuric acid solution of pH 5 to remove the bulk of ammonia and zinc, then stripped at 55°C with a 60 g/Iitre H2SO4 95 g/Iitre copper solution to yield a 15 g/Iitre H2SO4 125 g/Iitre copper solution.This liquor is fed to an adiabatic vacuum crvstalliser operating at 35°C and 5 kPa vacuum where crystals of CuSO4 5H2O are formed. Crystals are separated from mother liquor and washed in a two stage pusher centrifuge, then dried in a hot air rotary drier. The crystal product obtained is of a high chemical purity and readily conforms to both Australian and overseas standards.

Namakwa Sands, a heavy minerals beneficiation business situated along the west coast of South Africa, is a major producer of titanium slag, pig iron, ceramics quality zircon and rutile concentrate to the international export market. The bulk of the economic mineralisation, which includes zircon, rutile, ilmenite and leucoxene is hosted by a late Cainozoic aeolian succession overlying remnant palaeo-strandline sediments. Relatively younger duricrust layers that cement a significant part of the generally unconsolidated ore compounds the challenging processing character of the primary mineralogy. The complex nature and hardness of the duricrust ore influence their mineability negatively, and can potentially destabilise downstream ore preparation processes. Effectively, up to ten per cent of the entire mineral resource is sterilised as the present infrastructure is not geared to treat the hard-mineralised ore. The metallurgical performance of the primary processing stage, which entails wet density separation, is strongly a function of the quality of the heavy mineral assemblage, liberation state of the economic minerals and slimes content. Elevated concentrations of garnet, a gangue contaminant exhibiting similar physical characteristics as the economic minerals, subtract substantially from the recovery performance of the secondary concentration process, which comprises mainly wet magnetic separation. By contrast, the intrinsic mineral purity of the economic fraction governs its successful recovery to saleable products as stringent product quality specifications apply. Improved mine planning through geometallurgical enhancement of the existing mineral resource model is envisaged to benefit the entire Namakwa SandsÆ mineral beneficiation chain, ultimately aiming to optimise mineral resource utilisation.

Isa): I found many ideas to interest me in Haddon King's paper "Notes on Ore Occurrences in Highly Metamorphosed Precambrian Rocks" (Stillwell Anniversary Volume).At Mount Isa I have not been happy about some of the longstanding appreciations of the geological evidence as fresh data accumulated, and as more and more knowledge has been building up outside Mount Isa in recent years of sedimentary deposition of sulphides.Accordingly, I organized a small section of the Geological Department at Mount Isa at the beginning of 1958 under Senior Geologist, W. J. Murray to reappraise our geological record and investigate old interpretations and new ones that arise. The work is expected to take several years to complete, but it is hoped that sufficient will be done before then to permit the most plausible story on the ore genesis to be chosen. In the meantime, W. J. Murray has proposed, in a Company Report, that the.epigenetic features of the silver,lead-zinc deposits, which are essentially conformable with the shales, could have resulted from remobilized syngenetic deposits.Haddon King, on p. 159; has listed six assumptions that are required by a magmatic-hydrothermal theory of, origin for conformable deposits. At Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. a number of attempts were made to remove water soluble copper and iron salts from calcined pyritic concentrates but variou~ problems arose and the methods were abandoned.A method of rapid washing has been developed and although some problems still exist a workable process was established which resulted in substantial savings of reagents used for the cyanidation of calcine.INTRODUCTIONIn the Great Boulder flowsheet crude ore is ground in cyanide solution, then thickened, agitated and subjected to two stage filtering. Secondary filter discharge is pulped with flotation circuit water, gassed with sulphur dioxide to precipitate soluble gold and activate pyrite, and after the addition of copper sulphate and xanthate, the pyrite and tellurides are recovered by flotation. Flotation tailings are thickened and pumped to the disposal area and concentrates are calcined in Edwards roasters. Calcine is washed to remove water soluble copper and iron salts and the washings pumped to the flotation section where the copper is used as an activator. The washed calcine is cyanided and returned to the crude ore circuit via the thickeners. The concentration of Mt. Morgan sulphide ore has always been attended by serious loss of gold. Until recently, with a simple selective flotation flowsheet, even the lowest grade of ore milled-about 2 dwt. per long ton-thislloss was 0·9 dwt., whilst for average to high-grade ore, 3·5 to 5 dwt., the figure was 1·5 to 2·0 dwt. Early in 1937 it was decided to equip the research laboratory for an investigation into the condition and location of the escaping gold and the physical and mineralogical barriers preventing its recovery.With the completion of: this equipment in July 1937, trial and error testing, which had been explored to exhaustion, was abandoned and a five months' research programme mapped out and commenced. Based on the knowledge so gained, a flowsheet combining primary desliming, bulk flotation of the natural slime, selective flotation of the deslimed fraction, and cyanidation of the selective flotation tailing was drafted and tried with encouraging results in a 70-lb. per hour pilot plant. This flowsheet, modified to meet current circumstances, is being dove-tailed into the existing 1,500-ton sulphide ore concentrator, though the cyanidation treatment is actually carried out in the oxidized ore mill, to which the flotation tails are pumped.RESEARCH EQUIPMENT(1) Five tube elutriator (Fig. 1) t built in the company's workshop.

The extent of regional stratigraphic and structural geological mapping so far carried out in Australia is likely to be greatly overestimated by uncritical inspection of the latest authoritative geological map of the continent-that so ably compiled by the late Sir'T. W. Edgeworth David. Vast areas geologically coloured on this map are in fact known only from the most meagre field data, some of Which even include observations of distant views from which the so-called "geology" has been indicated in' reconnaissance reports.This applies to large areas in Cape York Peninsula; the plateau of Arnhem Land, and its margins except on the west where the Pine Creek mineral belt is better known; to the Desert Basin of Western Australia, practically the whole of the western half of the Northern Territory, much of east-central Western Australia, and northwestern New South Wales. Other vast areas are, more happily perhaps, left blank. It is true that prospecting parties have, at various times and with varying degrees of thoroughness, traversedparts of these little-known regions, often, however, in the search for gold or the.more obvious types of metalliferous mineral deposits and, furthermore, too often without leaving any written account of their examination, or with very sketchy details supplied. Unpublished geological surveys also cover some parts of these regions, but, on the whole, the picture we can draw of the regional deployment of rock masses in Australia is far less full than even David's map, with its obvious blanks, presents to us.Lest the practical mineral seeker among us should be inclined to place too much reliance on the prospecting to which I have referred.as giving him a straight hint of what country to keep out of, we may point to the recent discovery of a major sedimentary basin in the east KimberllilYs on which Dr. Teichert will have more to say. And that there are new metalliferous mineral deposits to be foundin parts of these little-known areas no one can doubt, for, after all, new discoveries are made from time to time in areas so well-known as the Victorian gold-fields. I take it then that regional geological mapping is a necessary concomitant of the further development of Australia's mineral resources-but I am not of the school that places it first on the list of priorities, and furthermore I believe that there can be a royal road to regional mapping-an inspired approach based on knowledge already gained and led to fruition by field surveys in key areas, by which there may be obtained a result giving a significantly close approach to actuality with only a fraction of the work that would be required for detailed field surveys on a systematic basis. I believe that a policy of rapid reconnaissance of such a type should be adhered to, especially in view of present deficiencies in numbers of geologists available for all purposes in Australia. The details that must eventually be sought can, I believe, be filled in later as the whole country becomes more developed and amenable to detailed surveys.

This paper on the relation of Granite and Sedimentary Contacts to Victorian Mining will, it is hoped, be of interest to members of the Institute.The broad fact that gold often occurs' at or near the junction of granite with sedimentary silurian or metamorphic rocks has been noted by some Victorian geologists, miners, and prospectors; but the fuq practical value -of the fact does not seem to have been fully realised by prospectors. Glancing at the Geological" Map of Victoria, one can see that many of our goldfields 'are situated at or near the junction of granite with Palceozoic sedimentary formations, and that some of our alluvial fields are on granite. Many prospectors are possessed of this knowledge but when prospecting a contact locality, they would be just as likely to confine their search for auriferous matrices to spots a quarter of a mile on the sedimentary side, as on the actual contact line of two formations.
