Gold was first discovered on the Shotover by Thomas Arthur in 1862, and soon there were over 3000 miners working on the river. It has often been called the richest river in the world. Most countries probably have one of these, but it was certainly the richest in New Zealand. In the early days some miners collected as much as 200 oz/d from a sluice box, and the early river gravels must have been extremely rich before the gold bearing terrace gravels were sluiced into the river. Otago produced about 10 Moz out of the NZ total of over 30 Moz. Most of this was alluvial and possibly one third or more came from the Shotover. The extremely cold winter and danger of flooding made it a dangerous river to work. During 1863 when heavy rain melted snow in the high country, the river rose 35 ft overnight and drowned many miners camped on the banks. These hazards still exist and dominate the method of working. The early hand miners cleaned out much of the riverbed, and the advent of the hydraulic elevator enabled deeper parts of the river to be worked over. Extensive sluicing of high terraces also took place particularly around Skippers. Several companies have attempted operations on the Shotover. Many of these were distinctly unsuccessful, such as the suction dredge at Maori Point about 1930 and the Skippers Limited fluming in about 1934. At least two attempts were made to divert the river with the Sandhills cut above Skippers and the Oxenbridge Tunnel down near Arthur's Point.

The development of a robust belt sampling strategy and protocol inunderground gold mines is a fundamental requirement for effective grade quality control, ore accounting and mine-mill reconciliations. As part of the ore management system, a belt sampling system has been developed by the author, which is used to predict monthly gold grade and its error for underground/belt/mill reconciliation and grade control. This paper presents the step-by-step development of the belt samplingstrategy and sample preparation protocol at Target, an underground gold mine in South Africa. The belt sampling system at Target consists of an underground belt transporting run-of-mine material into an underground transfer point, a weightometer, a two stage crushing system, a tube splitter and a catchment device. The design allows run-of-mine ore on the belt to be sampled automatically by a go-belt sampler. GyÆs sampling theory of particulate materials forms the basicframework of the belt sampling strategy. The theory is used to quantify the optimum sample mass of broken material to be taken from the belt and to predict its reliability. It is also employed to determine the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE), time interval between samples and particle size requirements of the final underground belt sample. Further, GyÆs sampling theory provides the means of analysing the crushing processes, splitting, segregation error, analytical variance, and the best sample preparation protocol. Although the belt sampling strategy developed in this study was forWitwaterstrand gold ore, the process is entirely general and may be very successfully used in any underground or surface mine.

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham Operation) is located in the Lao People's Democratic Republic and is owned and operated by the Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (PBM). Australian-headquartered copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited holds a 90 per cent interest in PBM; the Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 per cent. The Phu Kham Operation was commissioned in 2008 with an initial concentrator nameplate throughput of 12 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a). Subsequent improvement projects, including the Phu Kham Upgrade Project (PKU), completed in 2012, and the Phu Kham Increased Recovery Project (IRP), completed in 2013, increased the design throughput to 18 Mt/yr. In 2016, the actual mill throughput exceeded 19 Mt/a, this throughput is budgeted to be maintained until the end of 2020.The concentrator flotation circuit upgrade, completed during the IRP, called for a non-selective bulk sulphide concentrate to be generated from the rougher circuit. This in turn caused the mechanical flotation cells in the cleaner circuit, particularly those in the second cleaner bank, to become volumetrically overload. The overload reduced the cleaner circuit performance to approximately 92 per cent copper recovery at a 23 per cent copper concentrate grade, below the expected 95 per cent recovery. This bottleneck restricted copper units entering the plant to approximately 14.5 tonnes per hour (t/h) due to uncontrolled recirculating load build-up in the mechanical cleaning circuit.Maintaining the operating methodologies would have led to a copper production shortfall beyond 2016, to address this shortfall the Phu Kham Operation looked to optimise the Jameson Cell and mechanical cleaner circuit performance. The work included fundamental application of flotation practice and modelling, mineralogical analysis, bubble size analysis, plant surveys and test work. The results were used to develop and implement an innovative automated control system strategy incorporating flotation theory and operating strategies. The automation has the ability to quickly adapt to disturbances in the circuit and maintain optimised performance with little or no intervention by flotation operators.Upon completion, cleaner recovery increased to 95 per cent at a final concentrate grade of 23 per cent copper, and copper units entering the plant increased to 17.5 t/h.CITATION:Baas, D and Mikhael Gurieff, L, 2018. Comparing Energy Efficiency of Multi-Pass High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) Circuits With increased emphasis on reducing costs and carbon emissions in mineral processing, it is becoming essential to employ the most efficient comminution devices and to use them to maximum effect. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are considered highly efficient compared with other devices, however their relative efficiency in multi-HPGR circuits is less well understood. A series of comminution tests was carried out to evaluate three multi-pass HPGR circuits and a jaw crusher-ball mill circuit. Combinations of HPGR units (1.0 m and 0.25 m diameter), jaw crushers and Bond ball mills were used to grind a 32 mm top size porphyry copper feed (BBWI = 12.1) to a product P80 size of about 150 ¦m. Up to three passes of HPGR were used in each circuit, with energy measurement and size analysis at each point in the comminution process. The energy efficiencies of individual comminution stages and of the overall circuits were quantified and evaluated using three different approaches. The operating work index method for comparing comminution energy efficiency underestimated HPGR performance due to the large amount of fines generated. The -75 ¦m efficiency factor and F50/P50 reduction ratio interpolation methods both give a fairer measure because they better take into account the amount of fines generated by HPGR. The results show that the relative comminution efficiencies of the three multi-pass HPGR circuits tested differ by as much as 22%, providing insights as how to best employ HPGR in a comminution circuit. The most energy efficient of the circuits tested was a three-pass HPGR circuit with a 1.0 m diameter roll on the first pass in closed circuit with an 8 mm screen followed by a second and third pass in a 0.25 m roll.

Study on Desulfurisation and Deashing for Medium-High Sulfur Coal Using Shaking Table As important coal resources, medium- high sulfur accounts for a significant part of the coal reserve in China. The environmental regulations and fuel standard requires sulfur and ash to be removed before it is used, so as to save energy and decrease the emission. Therefore, the effective desulfurisation and deashing technologies are urgent needed. However, due to the local characteristics of the coal, specific technology with optimum operation parameters is required to develop for different local coal. Qinglong is a district of Guizhou Province, which has large medium to high sulfur contained coal reserve. In this paper, medium-high sulfur coal is sampled from Qinglong, Guizhou province. Some basic characteristics such as the mineralogical composition of the coal rock, the monomer existing state and the granulometric composition are determined by X-ray diffraction quantitative analysis and polarisation microscope analysis respectively. Adopting the classified feed method, shaking table tests show that the feed pulp concentration is 20 per cent, the stroke is 13mm, the frequency of the stroke is 380 per min, the cross slope is 3¦ and the volume of wash water is 5.2 L per min. Under such condition, aggregate processed coal yield is 72.87 per cent and sulfur content decrease to 1.31 per cent With shaking table technology of 'First stage rough and intermediate further fine benefication', the yield of concentrate coal increased from 72.87 per cent to 81.21 per cent, while the sulfur content reduced to 1.35 per cent.

A model has been developed as part of the AMIRA P420 Gold Processing Technology Project to simulate the recovery of gold by centrifugal gravity devices. The model (which is available online) uses the simulation methodology developed by Laplante et al (1995) to predict gravity recoverable gold (GRG) recovery under varying operating conditions and circuit configurations. In addition to predicting GRG recovery, the model also predicts the GRG content and size distribution of the cyclone overflow and underflow. The predicted overflow GRG content and size distribution can be used as inputs for a leaching model in which size dependent leaching rates are applied for each size class of GRG and non-gravity recoverable gold (non-GRG) in the cyclone overflow, allowing size-by-size leach recoveries to be determined for GRG and non-GRG. The application of the gravity model and leaching model are demonstrated using a case study. The simulated gravity recovery and leaching performance showed excellent agreement with the measured values. The developed models can be used to assess the sensitivity of gravity gold and leach recoveries to varying feed GRG content, GRG size distribution, gravity circuit feed rate, classifier performance and leach residence time. The described methods can be used to optimise new and existing gravity and leaching circuits.

The Newmont Waihi Operations are centred on the Martha mine at Waihi, New Zealand. The mine has produced over 6.6 million ounces of gold from both openpit and underground sources since operations began in 1878. The current open pit operations commenced in 1988 and in the year to 30 June 2002 produced 129,790 ounces of gold at a cash cost of USD122 per ounce. This paper provides an overview of current operations and future directions.

High Pressure Sulfuric Acid/Oxygen Leaching of Platinum Group Metals Bearing Ni-Cu Mattes The processing of platinum bearing Ni-Cu ores for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs) involves comminution, flotation, smelting, and converter treatment of the furnace matte. Leaching circuits are predominantly used for further processing to separate the base metals and PGMs contained in the converter matte. Nickel dissolution is primarily achieved in the first stage leach (high pressure or atmospheric leaching, or a combination of the two), which is followed by second stage high pressure sulphuric acid/oxygen leaching to dissolve copper and the remaining nickel. PGMs are recovered from the leaching residue in downstream processes, and their dissolution in the first two leaching stages must hence be limited. Studies have been conducted to investigate the leaching mechanisms and kinetics of base metals in different leaching environments. The key operating parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of these metals include the temperature, acid concentration, degree of agitation, feed particle size distribution, and oxygen partial pressure. There is, however, a limited understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in the high pressure leaching process. Consequently, this process is controlled based on operators' intuition despite its importance in the recovery of PGMs. An improved fundamental understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in this leaching environment is required to be able to accurately model the process. This in turn will allow the development of an improved control strategy and the estimation of optimum operating conditions. An overview of the leaching mechanisms of base metals and the effects of key operating parameters on their dissolution kinetics in different leaching environments are presented. Models that have been developed to predict the leaching behaviour of base metals are discussed and evaluated. Finally, initial results obtained with an experimental setup that will be used to investigate the behaviour of PGMs in high pressure leaching systems are discussed and compared with published results.

Pyrite Bioleaching and Slag Neutralisation - Two Treatments in a Single Process for Recovering Valuable Metals from Both Materials Very often the production of copper sulfide concentrate yields pyrite concentrate as a by-product. This is the case at the Knre mine in northern Turkey. This kind of concentrate may contain low grades of valuable non-ferrous metals. Bioleaching of such pyrite concentrates is a processing technique to solubilise metals like copper, zinc or cobalt in a sulfuric acid pregnant solution. The pyrometallurgical processing of copper sulfide concentrate produces slag that still contains valuable metals in varying concentrations. Slag is used in many ways: as aggregates, ballast, pavement material, in cement production and glass making. Due to its relatively alkaline nature, it can also be used to neutralise acidic solutions. A preliminary study of the bioleaching of the pyrite concentrate (Co 0.28 per cent, Cu 0.56 per cent and sulfur as sulfide 42.6 per cent) produced at Knre has been undertaken with the assessment of the neutralisation of the acidic bioleach solution by using old slag (Co 0.29 per cent, Cu 1.70 per cent and sulfur as sulfide 0.89 per cent) stockpiled on the site. The main conclusions of the study were as follows: Knre pyrite was amenable to bioleaching at 40¦C. Cobalt solubilisation directly related to pyrite degradation reached a maximum yield above 90 per cent. Final copper recovery was limited to approximately 66 per cent not directly related to bacterial growth and pyrite oxidation. Slag could be used as a substitute for limestone as a neutralising agent in the bioleaching tanks. Cobalt and copper could be recovered from pyrite concentrate and slag simultaneously from both materials. A pre-feasibility study is underway to carry out a preliminary cost estimate of an installation for cobalt and copper production from these two materials processed in a single operation.

A systematic, detailed airborne geophysical programme carried out in the Taupo Volcanic Region (TVR) in 2005 by Glass Earth NZ Ltd culminated in the identification of 21 epithermal gold targets. In this paper we present the follow up ground-truthing results from the first target drilled, Tahunaatara (TAH).   The Tahunaatara target was identified by means of a multi-disciplinary integrated approach (ôdata interventionö) that defined and ranked the target as being highly prospective for epithermal gold mineralisation. A follow-up ground resistivity survey over the target area revealed the presence of a ôresistorö buried beneath an extensive cover of recent volcaniclastic material. Geochemical soil sampling carried out in conjunction with the resistivity survey yielded anomalous gold values.   The host unit at TAH consists primarily of flow banded rhyolitic lavas, volcaniclastic deposits and tuffs of the Ohakuri Ignimbrite with small outcrops of silicified bedded breccias forming local topographic highs. Results from the first orientation drill hole show wide zones of intense silicification, clay alteration and mineralisation. Sulphide mineralisation is disseminated throughout the core in association with hydrothermal replacement and also occurs in association with quartz veins and infill in fractures (sulphide-only veinlets as opposed to quartz + sulphide veinlets). Textural evidence from drill core indicates that hydrothermal fluid flow was multi-staged with potential for multi-stage gold, and other elements. The presence of polymictic hydrothermal eruptive breccias indicates a hydrothermal vent system.   Alteration varies from argillic to silicic, with pervasive adularia and vuggy silicification also present. Chlorite is minor and associated with quartz, illitic clay and adularia. Assay results currently available confirm the presence of anomalous gold values in association with zones of vuggy silica deposition and intense silicification.

Geological Parameters Controlling the Improvement of Manufactured Sand Using Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers Instead of Cone Crushers Natural sand is a limited resource. In Sweden the total use of natural sand and gravel is around 20 million tonnes per year and the goal is to halve the use of this resource in the near future. Most of this natural sand is used for concrete production, so the consequence of this goal is that more and more concrete must be produced with manufactured sand. The bedrock of Sweden consists mainly of granites and gneisses, rock types mainly composed of various amounts of quartz, feldspar and mica. Manufactured sand from these materials generally contains rather flaky and elongated grains, and there are few types of granite that can be used as manufactured sand in concrete without increasing the amount of cement by eight to ten per cent. A Vertical Shaft Impact crusher (VSI) is commonly used to improve the shape of coarse aggregate particles. Research has shown that it is even possible to improve the shape in aggregate fractions less than 1 mm for some rock types. The aim of this project was to investigate which geological parameters control the improvement of manufactured sand when using VSI-crushers instead of the traditionally used cone crusher. In order to do this eight rock types of granitic composition were investigated. The selection of rock materials for the tests was based on grain size and mica content. A 4 - 8 mm fraction of each material was used for the tests. The characterisation of the shape of the material was performed using image analysis applied on microscopic images. The results showed that the VSI-crusher had improved the shape of all materials down to 0.036 mm, except for one rock sample. According to these results granites with low mica content and relatively high content of feldspars have the best prerequisites to produce manufactured sand for concrete with suitable geometric characteristics, and if these materials are crushed with a VSI crusher they almost show the same characteristics as natural sand.

Whilst the fossil fuel-based power industry moves towards carbon capture and storage (CCS) or so-called 'geosequestration', the minerals industry should adapt to reap the benefits of the new technology. If CCS becomes viable, the door is open to potential key developments in mineral processing. For example, truly continuous steelmaking could at last be realised using natural or manufactured gas combined with generic melt circulation. Iron ore fines would form a thin molten layer moving countercurrent to the gaseous reductant on one side of a melt circulation loop with efficient post-combustion without deleterious effects of slag accumulation on the other. This eliminates oxygen steelmaking because carbon has no access to the circulating molten iron. Steelmaking merely requires addition of the appropriate low level of carbon and in-line impurities removal to meet product specification. Concerning non-ferrous smelting, nothing short of virtually zero gas emission will be acceptable in the future. For dolomite-hosted Zn/Pb sulfide ores, typified by those in the Carpentaria region of Northern Australia, the way forward proposed is sulfur fixation at the mine site employing the highly exothermic reaction of SO2 with dolomite, followed by encapsulation of sulfated dolomite in fused ore slag. This releases enough energy for direct ore smelting to individual metal products. However, without CCS the strategy would be unacceptable because of greenhouse gas emissions. The scheme is advocated for direct ore smelting at McArthur River. As a result, the environmental problems of disposal of flotation tailings are avoided. Also, highly energy intensive ultra-fine grinding is eliminated, as indeed froth flotation itself, with overall very significant energy savings and exceptionally high increases in metals recovery. Zinc and lead recoveries approaching 99 per cent are predicted to be entirely feasible.

Large volumes of tailings are produced annually by the goldmining industry of Western Australia. This material ishydraulically discharged into large storage facilities usingsub-aerial deposition methods. Much of the gold comes fromhighly weathered rock, resulting in tailings with significant claycontents. Consolidation of these materials can be very slow,particularly if occurring under the effects of self-weight alone.To optimise the consolidation behaviour of the tailings, disposalstrategies can take advantage of the effects of evaporation byallowing each tailings layer to dry before the next layer isdeposited. In the last 20 years, much of the gold processing inWestern Australia has utilised saline groundwater. As the salinetailings dry, the surface will develop a thin salt crust. Laboratorytests have shown that these crusts can drastically reduce thesurface evaporation, adversely affecting the behaviour of thestorage. This problem has been the focus of an extensive researchprogramme, with the objective of obtaining a fullerunderstanding of the mechanisms controlling the coupledconsolidation and evaporation behaviour of saline gold tailings.Part of this study involved site investigations of a wide range ofstorages to ascertain their current states. Methods of gainingaccess to the tailings following deposition were developed.In situ testing and high quality sampling were conducted on each storage and samples returned to the laboratory for analysis. These investigations have enabled full characterisation of the storages to be accomplished. Examples of data are shown herein and the implications of the results are discussed.

The Effect of Using Different Comminution Procedures on the Flotation of Platinum Group Minerals The use of High Pressure Grinding Rollers (HPGR) has been widely reported to have major benefits in the treatment of minerals such as iron ore and diamonds. To date there have been few investigations into its use in the treatment of ores containing Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs). HPGRs are known to reduce energy consumption and wear costs and improve the throughput in the circuit. In the present investigation the effect of the comparative use of HPGR and conventional crushing in combination with either dry or wet rod milling on the flotation of PGMs was studied using batch flotation. Previous studies of a base metal sulfide ores had shown that either HPGR or conventional crushing followed by dry milling produced the highest grades and recoveries. However in the present study it was observed that a similar treatment produced the worst results and the highest grades and recoveries were obtained for the case of conventional crushing in combination with wet milling. The HPGR showed no advantages in terms of flotation performance and dry milling produced particularly poor flotation results. The results were investigated further using various surface characterisation techniques in order to determine the reason for the decrease in grades and recoveries of platinum when using dry milling and HPGR as opposed to the case for base metal sulfides. The feed and product samples were analysed using ToF-SIMS, XPS and MLA. The paper will propose reasons to explain the different flotation behaviour of the two ore types following the various comminution processes focusing on the surface characteristics of the ores, the particle size distribution and the pulp chemistry.

At the beginning of this year it was my pleasure and responsibility to take over the Presidency of our Institute from Mr A. A. Parish who, as did his predecessors, filled the office with distinction. It is a great privilege to address you as President and it is an occasion for my wife and family, and I am most grateful for your inviting them to the buffet dinner. Our Secretary (Miss Jacka), who processes all Presidents, has told me that there are neither questions nor discussions on Presidential Addresses, and that being so, I felt free to select a controversial topic. Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins in Western Southland include a wide range of non-marine and marine sediments, in a structurally complex setting dominated by major fault systems. A reassessment of their mineral potential confirms large quantities of nonmetallic minerals (limestone, aggregate, marl), and smaller reserves of bituminous coal, lignite, clays, and oil shale. Hydrocarbon potential is largely untested. Metallic minerals are present in trace amounts, apart from platinum group minerals and some detrital gold. In the offshore area, seismic data suggest the hydrocarbon potential is significant. The Orepuki area has the most interest onshore.
