Since commencement of underground production in March 2006 the Kencana K1 orebody has delivered over 0.9 Mt of ore containing 1.18 Moz Au until April 2009. The Kencana deposits are part of the Gosowong goldfield located on the island of Halmahera in eastern Indonesia. The district has produced over 2.3 Moz since mining commenced in 1999 with the first two deposits extracted by open pit methods. The K1 deposit is technically challenging being a vein style deposit with poor to very poor ground conditions and a relatively low overall dip of around 45 degrees to mine grid east. It is mined under geological control by underhand cut and fill methods utilising cemented paste backfill aiming for 100 per cent extraction. With these conditions the operation was mine limited in the initial two years of production resulting in low stockpile levels for mill feed blending and hand-to-mouth mine to mill production. Mill feed rates have increased from 30 t/h to 55 t/h over this period following business improvement projects while mine production has escalated to match this increase as deeper levels of the deposit are accessed. The operation has now become mill limited. Monthly mill gold production from Kencana has ranged up to 50 000 oz with head grades ranging between 8 g/t and 122 g/t Au on a daily basis. As individual grade control assays can extend into the per cent Au range there are challenges in sampling, modelling, mining, blending and milling the Kencana orebody. At the time of commencement of ore driving in K1 the national geology team had little prior experience in underground mining and systems were in early development. The variances in feed grade and tonnages have been reduced with time as the operation evolves and business improvement initiatives are undertaken to smooth peaks and troughs in ore supply. Two such initiatives in the geology department have added over US$20 M of additional revenue per annum.

Gold Fields Australia is constructing two major ventilation shafts at the Wallaby gold mine in Western Australia. The new ventilation shafts are required to facilitate the long term ventilation strategy for the mine, thereby allowing continued extraction of ore beyond 1000 m below the surface. The construction work has involved all of the challenges that shaft construction can throw up, including challenging geotechnical conditions, unexpected high water inflows and major circulation loss during pilot hole drilling for raise boring. An extensive geotechnical and hydrological investigation program was undertaken prior to awarding the shaft construction contracts. While most of the risks were identified, several proved to be much more challenging than expected. The shaft construction methods included conventional sinking into the fresh rock profile in each shaft, followed by raise bore pilot hole drilling and reaming. A headframe was constructed for the first shaft, which was sunk to 92 m with a stage suspended in the shaft to facilitate the concrete lining and provide rope guides for the kibble winding. Drawing from experience when sinking the first shaft, additional ground pre-conditioning was implemented for the second shaft, which was pre-supported with continuous piles to 28 m followed by sinking to 50 m using a crane instead of winders and a headframe. Following the conventional sinking through the weathered zone in each shaft, the shafts were completed using a raise bore. The first shaft utilised a riser pipe and rotary vertical drilling system (RVDS) with the second shaft having utilised a dual rotary rig for pilot hole drilling. The 1981 Review: In the late 1970s there was an upsurge of interest in the prospecting and mining of this countryÆs mineral resources. That upsurge of interest was accompanied by a mounting public concern over the damage mining operations might do to the environment. Concern was also expressed about what some people perceived as inadequacies in the legislation which regulates mining and the grant of mining privileges, and inconsistencies in the relationship of that legislation to other legislation regulating land use and the use of resources.

Entry of personnel under a vertical raise bored hole is not standard practice in Australia. Where access is required below a rise, mining operations must be confident that they understand the capacity of the ground control specified and installed. Physical modelling was conducted on Callie mine to evaluate the performance of 5 mm steel wire weldmesh secured to the base of a vertical raise bored hole of 1.4 m diameter. Joint orientation data was used with Unwedge to calculate a series of potential wedges likely to form within the rise. The mass of the most likely wedges were then replicated by collecting rocks in 5 kg increments (¦10 per cent), which were allowed to freefall onto installed mesh at the base of a 40 m vertical rise. The results indicate that two sheets of mesh can retain a freefalling rock of at least 20 kg mass although rupture of strands can result. This paper outlines the test conditions, expected results based on theoretical calculations and actual outcomes of the testing.

Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements com- menced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and com- pared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Program- mable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

Automation in underground mining enhances safety and leads to economic efficiency. In the past many efforts have been made on the automation of longwall shearer operation. With respect to the ultimate goal of automation, ie self controlled operation, coal bed boundary detection is one of the key problems. For longwall human labor is necessary in order to detect the exact position of the coal seam to be excavated. The authors present a sensor concept based on infrared technology and pattern recognition which will solve this problem. The very harsh underground conditions set high demands on the implemented sensors. The combination of infrared sensors and powerful processing algorithms is part of the innovative concept for automation of the new Eickhoff Bergbautechnik GmbH SL 750 shearer loader. The multi-sensor automation system EiControlPlus which is designed for the complete detection of the machine environment fills in the gap in the coal-excavation automation by building a recognition system that turns the shearer loader into an 'intelligent machine' which is capable of detecting the correct position of the seam to be excavated and thus enables human-free coal mining.

Electro slag remelting (ESR) is one of the methods used to produce high-cleanliness steel. In the ESR method, the product steel electrode is immersed in flux, and the electrode is melted by the Joule heat of the flux generated by high current. CaF2-based melts are mainly used as fluxes, but the electrical conductivity of CaF2-based melts varies widely among researchers and measurement methods. Therefore, this experiment aims to measure the electrical conductivity of CaF2-based melts based on the van der Pauw-Ohta method, which does not require the cell constant that is a fundamental error factor in electrical conductivity measurement at high temperatures. The measurement temperature was set at 1450–1600°C, and dehydrated Ar flowed through the furnace at 200 mL/min. Electrodes were fabricated by Pt-30mass per cent Rh alloy, and the electrodes were connected to an impedance analyser using a four-terminal probe. The electrodes were immersed in the melt, and the impedance and phase angle were measured by AC frequency sweep (50 Hz to 200 kHz). The electrical conductivity was then calculated by utilising the impedance’s real part values when the impedance’s imaginary component was zero. The electrical conductivity showed a positive temperature dependence. The electrical conductivity of 60(CaO⋅Al2O3)-40CaF2 melt increased with increasing temperature but was found to be roughly one-third of those of the previous studies. In the conductivity measurement of 60(CaO⋅Al2O3)-40CaF2 melt, the AC frequency with a phase angle of 0° was found to be different depending on the temperature and immersion depth. By sweeping the frequency, the impedance at the phase angle of 0° can be obtained, which enables us to measure the electrical conductivity more accurately.

Geostatistical conditional simulation is a method to assess variability and risk in mineral deposits and the tool has wide potential applications in the iron ore industry. Correct reproduction of multivariate relationships is important in iron ore simulation, especially between Fe and impurities such as Al2O3, SiO2 and P. The turning bands simulation method, using a full model of coregionalisation for multiple attributes, is the main multivariate conditional simulation algorithm used in the Western Australian iron ore industry. This paper discusses the results of a more recent approach using minimum/maximum autocorrelation factors (MAF) to transform and decorrelate the multivariate data prior to independent sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS). MAF-SGS results are compared to those of the turning bands approach in the Yandicoogina channel iron ore deposit (CID), and both methods performed well in simulating Fe, SiO2, Al2O3 and P distributions. Extensive checking of simulations showed that both approaches could reproduce multivariate statistics and spatial continuity of the original conditioning data. Both approaches reproduced the histograms and variography of input sample composites. While the MAF-SGS approach requires additional transformations when compared with the single normal scores transformation required for the turning bands method, MAF requires only that the direct semivariograms be modelled. In contrast, using turning bands with multiple attributes requires modelling a full linear model of coregionalisation, which can be difficult to model because of the need to ensure the model is positive semi-definite. Turning bands may be preferred if there are a modest number of correlated variables allowing construction of a linear model of coregionalisation that adequately models the multivariate behaviour. MAF-SGS is preferable for larger numbers of correlated variables. Both MAF-SGS and turning bands methods performed well in conditional simulation of correlated variables at Yandicoogina.

The earliest discovery and mining of coal in the northern area of the Greta Coal Measures at Anvil Creek in 1862 was by William Farthing, however, some official records attribute the discovery to Thomas Frost in 1864. Frost's discovery was examined by William Keen, government examiner of coalfields, and further prospecting was carried out. This was followed by the pioneering work of C S Wilkinson, government geologist in 1884. Subsequently in 1886 C S Wilkinson entrusted a detailed survey of the coalfield to the then geological surveyor, T W Edgeworth David.The outcrop of the Greta Coal Measures around the Lochinvar dome was mapped by Edgeworth David and as soon as he reported his discovery, the Department of Mines reserved in the interests of coal mining an area of 23700 acres, which extended between what became the South Greta and Abermain No I Collieries.

The production at First Quantum Minerals’ (FQM) Kevitsa Mine, located in northern Finland, commenced during the second quarter of 2012. Presently, the mine processes approximately five and half million tonnes of ore annually, producing nickel, copper and platinum group metal (PGM) concentrates. In order to support fast production ramp-up and optimise the performance of flotation thereafter, an extensive advanced flotation control solution was implemented by Outotec in collaboration with FQM Kevitsa.In addition to basic process instrumentation and process control, each of the 14 Outotec 300 m3 and another 26 cells, ranging from 20–160 m3, have been equipped with state-of-the-art systems providing froth image analysis and automatic froth speed control. Also, the flotation cell levels are stabilised with advanced feed-forward level control.The online analyser provides key feedback information of the process performance for the advanced process control (APC) system. Based on this information, APC system defines grades and recoveries according to rules defined by Kevitsa process metallurgists. This system executes the control strategies for optimising the production of concentrates.Throughout the implementation and support phases, specific and intensive attention was paid to ensure plant personnel gained full understanding of interacting with the system and how to incorporate their process experience and skills to optimise the APC strategy. This level of expertise is also a valuable asset in understanding the APC system’s contribution to the overall performance of the plant as well as providing the ability and confidence to define key performance indicators used for continuous assessment. East Otago gold deposits are hosted in Otago Schist that is the metamorphosed equivalent of Permian-Triassic Torlesse terrane greywackes. Relatively undeformed Torlesse sequences in Canterbury have <l m - 50 m bedding, with c. 500 m - l km and c. three kilometre scale units, typically either: 1) thick-bedded, massive, sandstones; 2) thin-bedded sandstone-argillite flysch; or 3) siltstone- or argillite-dominated units. Such lithological layering in Otago was intensely folded, deformed, and overprinted by metamorphic fabrics during Jurassic-Cretaceous regional metamorphism. Although primary sedimentary structures can no longer be recognised, a æghostÆ lithological variation is still present in Otago represented by psammitic (sand-derived), interlayered (sandstone-siltstone derived) and pelitic (siltstone-mudstone derived) schist. Lithological æunitsÆ in the schist are typically either 20 100 m or c.1 - 2 km thick, and are oblique to faults and shears hosting gold mineralisation at Macraes, Barewood, Nenthom, and Oturehua. Lithological variations and folds in lithological units are important in the along-strike distribution of gold in these deposits, and in the development of relatively high-grade pods and shoots at l00 m - 1.5 km scales. Ramps, flats and step-overs (known to be locally important for controlling mineralisation) are commonly located at lithological boundaries, presumably by local refraction of faults or shear zones as they propagated through folded stratigraphy. The various lithologies have also responded differently to deformation, causing variations in permeability that affected the penetration of mineralising fluids. Mapping lithological variations in barren host-rocks, either directly+ by fieldwork or indirectly by aerial geophysics, is a key to understanding and predicting the distribution of gold at mine and deposit scales.

Since early 1971 Western Titanium N.L. has been operating an ilmenite upgrading plant on a commercial basis at Capel, Western Australia. In their process ilmenite is pre- oxidized, then reduced in a rotary kiln to a mixture of metallic iron and titanium oxides. The iron is leached out by accelerated rusting in aerated water, leaving a product with titanium content, expressed as Ti02, of about 92%. Samples from different stages of the up- grading process, representing operations over the last two years, have been studied in detail by X-ray diffraction methods, and the sequences of phases and reactions occurring have been determined. Quantitative X-ray studies showed the ilmenite feed materials to consist of a mixture of ilmenite and pseudo- rutile. Pre-oxidation of the ilmenite at =1000¦C leads to the formation of rutile plus a Fe2TiO5-FeTi205-Mn2TiO5 solid solution. The final reduction product consisted of a mixture of metallic iron, reduced rutile and a FeTi05-MnTi205-Ti305 solid solution. The relative amounts of these reduction products were very sensitive to the initial concentra- tions of the minor constituents manganese and magnesium. The effects of variation of ilmenite feed rate, reducing atmosphere,- reduction temperature and controlled addition of magnesium were also studied.

China’s mineral deposits are the result of metallogenic processes associated with the geodynamic evolution of tectonic plates and eventual amalgamation into their modern configuration. The principal tectonic provinces of China comprise the North China Craton, Yangtze Craton, Cathaysia Craton, Tarim block, Altay-Tianshan-Hinggan orogens (part of the Central Asian Orogenic Bel), Central China orogens, Songpan-Ganze orogen and Alpine-Himalayan fold belts, which are part of the huge Tethysides. These tectonic elements are testimony to a complex geological history spanning more than 3000 million years. This contribution will focus on selected areas of the Altay-Tianshan, the fold belts surrounding the North China Craton and Yangtze Craton and the mineral systems along the Ailaoshan-Red River fault zone. Mineral deposits in these provinces include gold, copper, molybdenum, tin, antimony, nickel, platinum group elements, lead and zinc.CITATION:Pirajno, F, 2015. The Yaojialing zinc-gold polymetallic deposit is a newly discovered, large skarn deposit in the Middle-Lower Yangtze metallogenic belt, East China. It is located in the transitional zone between the Tongling uplift block and the Fanchang faulted basin. It is mainly hosted in the contact zone between early Cretaceous granodiorite porphyry and Carboniferous-Triassic limestone, or occurs in limestone xenoliths within the intrusion. Skarn and stratabound massive sulfide orebodies are the primary ore styles. Sulfide ?34SV-CDT values indicate a magmatic sulfur source, in common with most deposits in the Tongling block. Calcite d13CV-PDB and d18OV-SMOW ratios reveal that marine carbonates were the major source of carbon in late-stage hydrothermal fluids. A recoverable uranium resource, shown to be suitable for in situ leaching, was discovered at Honeymoon in South Australia in 1971. Exploration of the deposit was carried out during the period from 1973 to 1979. Uranium mineralisation occurs in a coarse-grained unconsolidated sand aquifer located in the Yarramba Palaeochannel at a depth of approximately 110 m. Following initial development during 1979 to 1983 and the construction of demonstration leach facilities, the Project was put on hold. Southern Cross Resources purchased the Project in 1997. Government approval was received in March 1998 for the operation of on-site demonstration leach and recovery facilities while an Environmental Impact Statement was prepared and a 1000 tpa commercial production plant was designed. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was released in June 2000 and operation of the test facility was completed in August 2000. Acceptance of the EIS by Commonwealth and South Australian state governments was announced on 20 November 2001. A Mining Lease was granted over the area of the proposed ISL operation on 8 February 2002. Operation of the Project is entirely dependent on using highly saline underground water resources to supply process and human needs. The management of discharge streams from the plant by re-injection was approved. The Honeymoon demonstration plant was the first adaptation of the solvent extraction process to highly saline in situ leach solutions. As such, it incorporated a number of unique operating and installation features. The trial period enabled optimisation of the process chemistry, additives and management and serves as an invaluable base for the proposed plant design and future operation. This paper discusses the nature of the uranium occurrence, the effect of saline water on the leach process and equipment, project design and environmental considerations, the requirements for disposal of discharge streams to minimise the impact on the arid environment and the requirements for rehabilitation following project completion.

In March 1990, Heritage Mining conducted a 2000 line km high resolution aeromagnetic survey of all its prospects in the Coromandel Peninsula. One of the areas covered was the Onemana Peninsula, situated about 5 km north of Whangamata. Details of location and geology are given by Robson and Stevens (this volume).   The detailed helicopter-borne magnetic and radiometric survey over the Onemana area consisted of 163 line kmÆs of flying, and was carried out in order to assist in the definition of hydrothermal alteration and pre- or post- mineralisation structures. The line spacing chosen was 100 m, flown east-west, with a mean sensor terrain clearance of 80 m. Tie lines were flown north-south every kilometre for levelling purposes. The sensor was a Geoinstruments G-813 proton precession magnetometer in a towed bird, with data recorded using a Geoinstruments G-2000 acquisition system.   The Onemana alteration system is at the northern end of a major north-north east trending structural corridor defined by regional aeromagnetic surveys performed by AMOCO in 1980 (Rabone, 1991). T his structure hosts a number of other extinct hydrothermal systems including Karangahake and Golden Cross. In the Onemana contour plot the predominant north-northeast structures form the boundaries of a large area of subdued magnetism in the southern part of the surveyed area that is caused by intense hydrothermal alteration. This area is about 3.5 km long by 1 km or more wide and contains outcropping sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias, as described in Robson and Stevens. A number of other structures transect this alteration zone, with strike directions ranging from northwest to north. A northwest feature notably truncates the zone to the south, while the northern end seems to be simi1arly bounded; however as data coverage ends at the coast, this feature is less conclusive.    Two distinctive types of strongly magnetic rock were discernible the contoured data. The strong negative magnetic anomalies the north and west are caused by fresh negatively magnetised rhyolites. This was confirmed by ground follow-up work that showed the rocks to be fresh biotite rhyolites with high magnetic susceptibilities.

Most of the Ta-Nb ores in China occur in altered granites, and Ta-Nb minerals occur in these granites as accessory minerals. This type of Ta-Nb ores are characterised by whole mineralised granite mass, large reserves, low grade of tantalum and niobium, less economic minerals, complex mineralogy, difficulty in separation and concentration of Ta-Nb minerals and high operating cost of ore dressing. The Ta-Nb ore presented in this paper is a low-grade Ta-Nb ore occurring in altered granite in Jiangxi province. It has large reserves, with the grade of Ta2O5 0.013 per cent and Nb2O5 0.023 per cent. The process mineralogy study carried out by the authors determined ore mineralogy and ascertained occurrence of Nb and Ta and their mineral processing characteristics. The results are used as the guide for developing the optimum mineral processing flow sheet. The results also indicated that this type of Ta-Nb ore contains a high content of Li, K and Na, a low content of deleterious impurity Fe, and the tailings can be used as feed for glass and ceramic materials. This study provided important mineralogy information for exploiting and utilising low-grade Ta-Nb ore resources, developing a mineral processing flow sheet and further utilising the tailings.

Geological exploration and mining development increased their intensity and rate of success during the last five years in Peru. Particularly relevant are the mining projects of Yanacocha and Pierina for epithermal Au and Ag. Also relevant are the new mining operations at Iscaycruz and Uchucchacua for limestone replacement Zn- or Ag-rich base metal skarn deposits. Miocene continental volcanics host the low-grade but near-surface orebodies of the Yanacocha mining district in Cajamarca. Several deposits have been mined since 1994 with open-pit and heap-leach gold production increasing from 300 000 ounces to 1 300 000 ounces in 1998. In a similar geological setting, but with three times the grade of Yanacocha, the Pierina valley-leach operation in Ancash is set to produce 800 000 ounces Au during 1999. At Iscaycruz in Lima, Cretaceous limestones host massive pyrite and sphalerite skarn deposits with 10 to 20 per cent Zn. Mining and milling were started in 1996 with last yearÆs production rising to 180 000 tonnes of Zn concentrates. At Uchucchacua, selective underground mining of fracture-controlled Ag skarns, with 400 to 420 g/t, has been recently increased from 1200 to 2000 tonnes per day to produce 5.5 million ounces Ag during 1998. Advanced exploration projects are located in the framework of nine Phanerozoic metallogenic provinces. Mineral deposits of preferred attention are precious metal disseminations and veins, base metal replacements and skarns, porphyry Cu (Mo-Au), Mississippi-Valley-type Zn and base metal volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits. Geological discovery of new orebodies enables a sustainable development of the mining industry in the country.
