The Department (formerly called State) of Tolima, which is beginning to attract considerable attention in this country on account of its mineral wealth, comprises an area of 18,415 square miles, lying between latitude 1" 34' 25" and 5" 44' 12/" N. and between longitude 74" 25' 45" and 76" 34, 25" W. from Greenwich. It is bounded on the north by the Department of Antioquia, on the east by the Departments of Cundinnmarca and Cauca, and on the south and west by the Department of Cauca. It is the most recently created of the States of Colombia, having been established by decree of April 12th, 1861, and being composed of the old provinces of Mariquita and Neiva, and of the districts Melgar, Carmen, Cunday and Santa Rosa, of Tequendama.

Surface subsidence of two longwall panels, one with a private residence and the other with an arch bridge, was monitored over a period of 1 to 1' ½ years. Surface subsidence data were analyzed in terms of zone of advance influence and delay angle of maximum subsidence velocity. The variational characteristics of both features coincide with the periodic weighting at the advancing longwall face. Surface heaving in the subsidence process can also be attributed to periodic weighting. It was found that residential damages occurred when subsidence velocity exceeded 4.5 mm/day (0.15 ft/day). The effects of locating structures on the panel center and near the gob edges are illustrated. The effect of mining on ground water was also discussed. Finally, methods of reducing structural damages are recommended.

To counteract the spiralling costs of labor and materials against the fixed sale of its product, namely, gold at $35 per oz, Homestake Mining Co. has revised the milling flowsheet once and effected increases in the daily milling rate twice in the past 12 years. During this period the mining department has been able to hold production costs steady by increased productivity through technical improvements and utilization of the most modern mining by CLAUDE E. SCHMIDT and FRANK M. HOWELL, JR. 46-MINING ENGINEERING, APRIL 1963 equipment. The flowsheet alteration occurred during 1951-1953 when the two crushing plants at the shaft head frames were converted to a three-stage crushing system with the third stage closed circuited to produce a minus 5/8-in. product as rod mill feed.

Around 4500 B.C., the Pharaoh of Egypt ordered a military campaign to the Sinai Peninsula and the shores of the Red Sea, to search for copper deposits which Egypt needed for jewelry, vases and weapons.5 To my knowledge, this is the first recorded expedition aimed at the discovery of minerals. The diligent Egyptian soldier-prospectors made discoveries through visual detection and manual effort, the approach which has given us the bulk of our mines to date. In the Rio Tinto District of Spain where Roman miners followed the Phoenician traders, we find the first evidence of discovery of hidden ore bodies in the absence of mineralized outcrops. This is how Joralemon 13 describes these Roman discoveries to the southwest of the Rio Tinto hills, under the flat plain of Seville:

COPPER ore from Kennecott Copper's Ray mine, about 60 miles southeast of Phoenix, Ariz., is concentrated at the company's mill at Hayden, some 18 miles south of the mine. The Hayden mill is currently treating 16,000 tons of ore per day by flotation, using raconite, a crude butyl xanthate, as a collector for the sulfide copper minerals and lime as a pyrite depressant.1 The ore contains significant amounts of nonsulfide copper minerals, but recovery of these values has been low. The Hayden mill is now being modified to provide for treatment of future ores by leach- precipitation-flotation (L-P-F). This modification, costing about $5 million, is expected to reduce the loss of nonsulfide copper values and improve overall copper recovery by an additional 2 lb per ton of ore.

In attempting to describe recent mining developments at the Bunker Hill mine, it may be well to recall first the old days of hand mining when holes were laboriously drilled by hand to a maximum depth of three feet, and were shot one or two at a time, in order that the miner could take advantage of every slip, crack or bedding plane, and so save as much drilling as possible. Broken muck, of course, was loaded by hand shoveling into wheelbarrows or small cars, and heading advances or stope tonnages were governed by the number of men that could find room to work in any given place. The first big improvement over these old methods was the introduction of the reciprocating type of air-powered rock drill. This innovation, crude as it was, enabled the miners to set up a machine and drill a complete round of holes in one shift; but broken muck was still loaded by hand, and the size and rate of advance in headings were limited by time required to remove the broken rock. The next improvement of consequence was the appearance of the hammer-type rock drill, which greatly increased drilling speed over the reciprocating type, and made possible the completion of a full cycle in one shift, by the use of crossbars in headings, and permitted drilling and mucking to be carried on at the same time. Rock drills continued to improve as time passed, and finally the smaller and more efficient mucking machines appeared on the scene, and it became possible to muck out a round of broken rock and have a clean setup for one or more drill columns and machines. A complete cycle of mucking, drilling, and blasting was completed in one shift with an average advance of five feet. These conditions prevailed for several years, but as the mine grew deeper, the distances to transport the workers grew longer, and this fact together with the shortening of the working day, soon presented the problem of attempting to complete a cycle of operations in a shift of only six hours at the working faces. Anticipating this condition, the operating heads at the Bunker Hill had started an intensive study of more and better mechanization, and over a period of comparatively few years have adopted and placed in service methods and machines that make it possible for a three-man crew to consistently advance headings seven by nine feet in cross section, at the rate of eight feet, and more, per shift, doing all the mucking, switching, drilling and loading. These improvements consist of the following major items: I. The development of a light, flexible, easily transported jumbo equipped with pneumatic columns (Fig I), that has decreased the "setting up" and "tearing down" time an average of 11/2 hr per shift, Or 25 PCt of the available working time. The cementing process has been used in approximately 2.5 million oil and gas wells to seal, protect and isolate various downhole formations against communication. It has been adapted to other more specialized situations such as solution mining and sealing salt storage reservoirs. The technical literature contains very few papers specifically dealing with the cementing process for these applications, yet there have been many special projects in various parts of the world that are novel. These will be highlighted in this review. This paper also presents a comprehensive review of the various techniques used in cementing wells drilled for the recovery of soluble salts and brines. It also covers the application of cementing techniques to a large number of wells drilled for the storage of hydrocarbons in South Louisiana.

CHARLES G. ROEBLING Charles Gustavus Roebling, president of the John A. Roebling's Sons' Co., of Trenton and Roebling, N. J., and of the New Jersey Wire Cloth Co., of Trenton, and vice-president of the John A. Roebling's Sons' Co., of New York, died at his home, No. 333 West State Street, Trenton, on Oct. 5, 1918. Mr. Roebling, who was born in Trenton, was a son of the John A. Roebling who finished the plans for the Brooklyn Bridge just before he died. The bridge was completed by his sons, Charles G. Roebling and Col. Washington A. Roebling. Upon graduation from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1871, Charles Roebling became associated with the Roebling company as a mechanical engineer. The objective of this investigation of the Cendrex was to determine the applicability of the X-ray instrument for the measurement of the ash content of coal. Developed by the Dutch State Mines, this instrument is designed to provide ash analysis of any desired coal product with only a 5-minute lag between sample collection and analytical result. The unit could, with limit controls, be used to feed back signals to preset the separating gravity of coal washers, control the ratio of various coals needed to produce an acceptable blend, and permit the sorting of a washed product into two qualities, one which is below and the other which is above a prescribed ash content. This unit can also be used discontinuously for rapid determination of samples of coals taken in the usual manner.

ProUuction of crude oil in Venezuela increased from 186,134,000 bbl. in 1940 to 2~8,131,ooo bbl. in 1941, or 22.6 per cent, to establish a new all-time high for the country. While the average production for the year was 625,000 bbl. per day, production during the month of December 1941 averaged 751,000 bbl. per day, and during the last week of the year, 766,000 bbl. per day. Production from the Lake Maracaibo basin averaged 454,000 bbl. per day during the year, or 72 per cent of the total for the country, compared with 73 per cent of the total produced in 1940. Drilling during the year was approximately on the same scale as in 1940, with 438 wells completed in 1941 as compared with 429 the year before. Exploratory completions decreased from 18 in 1940 to 6 in 1941. Of the drilling operations in 1941, 56 per cent was concentrated in the Lake Maracaibo basin and 44 per cent in eastern Venezuela, success being 98 per cent in the Lake basin and 83 per cent in the east. Successful completions for the country as a whole amounted to 92 per cent of the total wells drilled. Exploratory drilling in 1941 resulted in the discovery of three new fields, all in eastern Venezuela; viz., Guara, about II km. to the northeast of the Oficina field but on a separate structure; Santa Rosa, which is east of El Roble field on a structure forming a part of the major Santa -Ana- San Joaquin-El Roble uplift; and Santa Barbara, which is southwest of the Jusepin field on an extension of the main Jusepin anticline. At the close of the year three wildcats were drilling, all of which showed prospects of obtaining production; that is, Mercedes No, 2 in central Guarico, Las Ollas No. I on the Anzoategui-Guarico border near the town of Zaraza, and Quiamare No. I in Anzoategui northeast of the town of San Mateo. In spite of heavy withdrawals and the resultant natural decline in the potentials of older producing areas, new drilling during the year increased the potential production of the country from an estimated 780,000 bbl. per day at the end of 1940 to an estimated 810,000 bbl. per day at the end of 1941, or approximately 4 per cent. Since domestic consumption of petroleum products is insignificant compared with total production, exports of crude and products during the year increased in line with production. Crude exports totaled 196,800,000 bbl., compared with 158,400,-000 bbl. in 1940, and exports of products were 26,100,000 bbl., compared with 21,900,000 bbl. the year before. Exports of crude from Venezuela to the United States amounted to 36,500,000 bbl. In addition, about 2,200,000 bbl. was imported in bond into the United States for transfer to Canada. Total refining capacity of the country in 1941 was approximately 125,000 bbl. per day, including a crude-conversion plant with a capacity of 32,000 bbl. per day, capable of making fuel oil only. TYPICAL of southwestern Wyoming are coal structures that dip from 4° to 17°. Those at the Reliance and Winton mines of the Union Pacific Coal Co. average 91/2 and 15°, respectively, and dip almost directly to the west. By using a hoist for main haulage, a method of mining has been developed whereby four places are driven on the pitch of the seam. Slightly upgrade from the strike at intervals of 300 ft. a two-entry system is driven to the north and to the south. In both fields, which are nongassy, an exhaust system of ventilation is used. Slope, manway, and lower or haulage entries are placed on the intake. Two air-courses and upper or breaking entries are placed on the return. A retreat system of mining is used exclusively. From the opening of its first coal mine, in the year 1868, until 1923, when the Joy loader was introduced into The Union Pacific Coal Company's operations, slopes, aircourses, and manways were driven by hand. Development work was conducted on the night shift or off shift, and the main hoist was used for haulage. The slope was driven down the pitch with crosscuts turned at intervals of 75 ft. and entries at 230 ft. Connections to the workings above were made by driving up the pitch 75 ft. Mule haulage was used to furnish cars to the hand loaders driving planes up the pitch. A sheave was placed at the upper end of the plane with a I¼-in. hemp rope dou- bling around it and having me end attached to the car and the other to the mule. The mulc, pulling downhill, raised to the working face a small wooden car of one-ton capacity. With the introduction of mechanical loading, mule haulage and small wooden cars disappeared and auxiliary hoists, electric locomotives, and steel cars with a capacity of 4 tons were substituted. Development work was done during two or three shifts of the 24-hr. period. Driving of haulage slopes down the pitch by hand continued. Crosscut intervals were changed to Ioo ft. and the crosscuts were driven with shaking conveyors. With the use of a 90° swivel, aircourses and manways were driven up the pitch. Entry intervals were changed from 230 ft. to 300 feet. Mobile loaders of the Joy type were first employed by this company in the year 1923 at Hanna, Wyo. In 1928, two 4-BU Joy loaders were transferred from Hanna to Winton No. I mine, where they were used in driving slopes and entries. At the time of transfer, the machines were about worn out and were not suited to the steep pitch, therefore frequent breakdowns occurred. However, experience justified the belief that the mobile loader was fitted for driving slopes in this field. During 1937 a unit was installed in Reliance No. 7 mine, and during 1939 one in Winton No. 7½ mine. With the introduction of this type of mobile loader, a new era of development began. Geography: The Tagtepe district of the Vilayet of Eskigehir is about 20 miles northeast of the city of Eskigehir (approximately midway between Ankara and Istanbul) in western Anatolia. The area is a mountainous one, the highest peak being Tagtepe Mountain (5200 ft) which is approximately in the center of the district. The mountains drop off to the deep valley of the Sakarya River on the north and to the plain of Eskigehir on the south. For the most part, the watershed is on the northern side of the mountain barrier, draining into the Sakarya River, which in turn empties into the Black Sea midway between Zonguldak and the mouth of the Bosphorus. The approximate area covered by the Tagtepe district is shown in fig. 1. Transportation to shipping points is available via the Istanbul-Ankara railroad. The station on this line nearest the mining district is Alpikoy station, about 20 miles by road southwest of Tagtepe Mountain. Interior roads within the district are poor. Being of dirt, the winter rains and snows render them almost impassable for trucks from about the middle of December until the end of March, thus presenting a considerable transportation problem. However, the roads from the Bagoren and Tagtepe chromite mines to the railroad shipping point at Alpikoy station have recently been repaired and will be maintained for all-weather truck transportation. Detailed climatic data are not available. However, in general the spring, summer, and early autumn months are dry, and good weather may be expected from May until early November. Then the winter rains commence, and heavy snow is usual during January and February. Geology: The mountainous structure of Tagtepe belongs to basic rocks of serpentine (Variscan Orogeny) which is in contact with Paleozoic schists at west, and an Oligocene outcrop of red clays in Margi-Sepetci region (see fig. 1) at southeast. The northwest and southwest borders of Tagtepe district are, respectively, surrounded by Paleozoic schists and pebbly gray and yellow Neogene clays. More recent formations of alluviums overlay the plain of Eskigehir. Dark basic rocks of trachytes with hornblende are visible on Turkmenbaba Mountain, at the west of Tagtepe. Mineral Occurrences: Chromite: the most important mineral found in any quantity in the Tagtepe district. The alignment of the deposits of chromite is in general along the line Bagoren-Tagtepe (see fig. 1). The first mines in the area were those of Tagtepe and Bagoren, which were developed over 20 years ago with Swedish capital. Other deposits of chromite, more recently discovered and so far of less importance, are being worked at Kurucor, Komurcu, Gelinmezari, and Lacin (see fig. 1). Deposits average generally between 46 and 48 pct chromic oxide, with the exception of the Bagoren mine which averages 44 pct. However, a new lode, very recently plotted, in the Tagtepe mine averages 50 pct Cr,O,, 4.6 pct SOz, and 7 pct FeO. Geological character of the chromite occurrences in the Tagtepe mine may be considered typical of most chromite lodes in this area. The indications are that the formations of ore lenses are developed by the segregation of chromite crystals intruded into the serpentinized rock, and exposed later to tectonic movement within the zone of crystallization. All lenticular masses are more or less regular in shape and follow each other in southeast-northwest direction and dip generally 70" NE. Ore lenses do not seem to persist in depth, average depth of two lenses is 60 ft below surface. Three lodes .have been mined as open-pit. The average dimensions of individual lenses are as follows: pitch length, 100 ft; breadth, 27 ft; and width, 20 ft. The lenses and their enclosing rocks are broken by parallel fractures in approximately east-west direction. The year 1942 in the South Central Texas area was marked by a sharp curtailment of exploratory drilling as compared with the past several years. In the 33 counties that compose this district, 17 of which are nonproducing counties, only 51 exploratory wells were drilled during the year 1942. This compares with 118 exploratory wells drilled during 1941, or a decrease of more than 50 per cent. At the end of the year 10 active exploratory wells were drilling in this area, as against 19 being drilled at the end of 1941. Of the exploratory wells drilled, two brought in oil wells and were new field discoveries and one was a gas well extending a recently discovered shallow gas area in the western part of the district. This compares with five new oil fields, one new . gas field and two extension wells drilled in 1941. Both new field discoveries were small and in areas outside of the general trend of the main producing horizon of the district in Edwards limestone: One new field, the Imogene, in Atascosa County, is a deep Edwards limestone prospect at 7500 ft., and the other new field, the Poth, in Wilson County, is a sSEa110w Wilcox (Eocene) prospect at 4000 ft. Subsequent drilling in each field to the end of I942 has proved disappointing. There were no new discoveries along the old Balcones fault-line trend, although 35 of the exploratory wells were drilled in counties along this trend. Approximately 38 wells were drilled in or adjacent to the proven fields of the district, of which 18 were oil wells, 2 were gas wells and 17 were dry holes. The district produced 6,186,178 bbl. of oil during 1942, which was a 7 per cent decrease under production for 1941. Approximately 4,961,000 bbl. of this total production, a slight increase over 1941, was produced by the four Edwards-limestone fields, Luling, Branyon, Salt Flat and Darst Creek, and the rest of the production came from the other 42 active fields in the district. During the year, 20 new producing wells were completed and 221 wells were abandoned in the producing fields. This alarming excess rate of abandonment~ over completions will be further reflected undoubtedly by a further decreased rate of 1943 production under 1942. Two active fields in the district in which more than one producing well was completed during the year were Bee Creek and Washburn. The majority of exploratory work in the district was confined to areas along the Wilcox trend, with a certain amount in progress along the deeper Edwards limestone trend. The successful completion of sevemi wells in the Washburn field from multiple sands in the Lower Wilcor (Eocene) has stimulated exploratory work along this trend, while the completion of a small well in the Imogene field from the Edwards limestone at 7500 ft. has renewed interest in this horizon at depths greater than generally are producing in the district. The year 1942 in the South Central Texas area was marked by a sharp curtailment of exploratory drilling as compared with the past several years. In the 33 counties that compose this district, 17 of which are nonproducing counties, only 51 exploratory wells were drilled during the year 1942. This compares with 118 exploratory wells drilled during 1941, or a decrease of more than 50 per cent. At the end of the year 10 active exploratory wells were drilling in this area, as against 19 being drilled at the end of 1941. Of the exploratory wells drilled, two brought in oil wells and were new field discoveries and one was a gas well extending a recently discovered shallow gas area in the western part of the district. This compares with five new oil fields, one new . gas field and two extension wells drilled in 1941. Mine power systems are quite different in many respects from those usually found in industrial plants. Wide areas are served, usually by a circuit which is connected continuously throughout the mine. In some mines one circuit may run for several miles. There are usually a small number of branch circuits involved considering the areas covered. In all mines circuits are sectional-ized at approximately 2500 ft by means of switches. All, or at least most branch .circuits, are sectionalized by manual switches. In some mines automatic sectionalizing gear is used to give automatic overload protection at various strategic points in the system. However at the present time this practice is by no means general. Circuit hazards in mine electric systems are much greater than those encountered in industrial installation. Falls of roof or coal form a prominent hazard which may break the wire and may cause ground faults or partial ground faults. Ordinarily electric cables in mines cannot be insulated, therefore a fall can easily cause a short circuit. The humidity in most mines is greater than 95 pct and at many points the floor is wet and water may be dripping from the roof over insulators, increasing the difficulties at that point. All electrical circuits must be contained in the mine entries and space must also be provided for moving equipment and men. Consequently, because of the proximity of the power circuit to the locomotives and other moving equipment a considerable hazard is introduced. Mine haulage track is not always good so that wrecks are not unusual. A wreck frequently does considerable damage to the power circuit. A ground fault frequently results in heavy arcing which may be sustained. If the damage to the circuit is mechanical it may mean that a trip of coal has wrecked and a great deal of coal dust could be thrown into the air as a result of the wreck. The arc resulting from the ground fault could ignite the coal dust and a mine explosion would result. A continued ground fault, even if high in resistance, also may ignite the coal which may be on the bottom of the entry and a mine fire may result. The fire hazard is one of the most serious hazards in any coal mine. Since the mine circuit is completely interconnected, any power interruption resulting. from a fault seriously affects the whole operation. Unless the mine is completely sectionalized the whole mine will be shut down until the fault is located and the proper switches are opened to isolate the fault; even then large areas may still be without power if they are supplied by a single power circuit which may be opened in isolating the fault. Further, mine power is usually supplied from a relatively small number of substations and the fault may be on a stub feed circuit, in which case power cannot be restored until the fault has been cleared. Practice varies widely with respect to placement of substations. Usually they will be spaced from I to 2 miles in 500V opera-tions, and at I mile intervals or less, in 250V operation. Actual mining operations govern substation placements and no general rules can be followed.
