THE dollar was, selected as the unit of currency by the Congress of the United States of America on Apr. 2, 1792. This "Dollar" currency is so much more convenient than the older British currency that the Canadian Government, among others, has adopted it with corresponding success. Just as the dollar is the unit of United States currency, so the meter is the international unit for measuring length. The various weights and measures used in - the United States have since Apr. 5,. 1893, been based on the metric standards. These fundamental standards are kept by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, which is supported by the United States, Great Britain and the, other leading countries. of the world. Copies are held-in Washington and other capitals. (2) As the dollar is divided into 100 cents, so the meter, which is 10 per cent. longer than the yard, is divided into 100 centimeters or cm. And as the cent is divided into 10 mills, so the centimeter is divided into 10 millimeters or mm. In measuring clothing and other articles which do not require great accuracy, the centimeter is most con¬venient, so that such work is done in terms of centi¬meters.. Instead of speaking of a 15;2-in. collar, a 40-centimeter or 40-cm. collar is referred to. Where accuracy is needed, as in mechanical drawing, machineshop work, etc., millimeters are employed. Thus 8 mm., is the convenient equivalent for 5/16 inch.

It is of importance to analysts to have a ready means of detecting the presence of small quantities of titaninm in iron ores and in certain fluxes and slags. The method given in Elderhorst's Blowpipe Analysis (fusion with potassium hydrogen sulphate) requires considerable practice, in order so to regulate the heat that the titanium oxide shall become soluble. In Brash's Determinative Mineralogy is found a method which, at least in inexperienced hands, has given better results, i. e., fusion of the substance to be tested with sodium carbonate on charcoal in the reducing flame. The solution in hydrochloric acid of the bead thus obtained, boiled with tin or zinc, gives the characteristic violet color; but when the mineral contains less than four per cent. of titanium oxide, long boiling and consequent concentration is necessary. In fact the test would seem to be much less delicate than is generally supposed. In the course of some analyses I quite accidentally found that a peculiar color is given to turmeric paper by solutions of titanium chloride. This color is hard to describe, being modified by the quantity of ferric chloride present in the solution ; but it is neither the orange of zirconia nor the red of' boron. It is rather a dull shade of purple, arid is easily recognized when the paper is dried, although the color fades in a few hours. By this means a solution containing .015 per cent. of titanium oxide can easily be tested. The same solution, treated with tin, required to be concentrated to one-tenth its bulk before a decided color could be obtained. The color given to turmeric paper is intensified after the solution has been treated with tin. This and some other indications show that the best shade of color is given by the titanons chloride rather than by the titanic chloride, and no other salt of titanium than the chloride has been found to give the color. Another peculiar property of titanium salts has come tinder my observation. Although the use of gaseous fuel in blast-furnaces has been often proposed, I hope the description of a very simple, yet practical and valuable, application of natural gas to the smelting of lead-ores and residues, at the works of the Pennsylvania Lead Company, will prove interesting. In May, 1886, directly after replacing the use of bituminous coal at the above works by that of natural gas, half-inch pipes from a branch gas-main were inserted directly into the tuyeres of a lead blast-furnace, and through these pipes gas was delivered into the furnace, with the air-blast at a pressure a little more than double that in the tuyere-pipes. At the same time the blast-pressure at the tuyeres was increased by an amount estimated to give a sufficient air-delivery when mixed with the gas-supply. The amount of gas delivered to the furnace is easily regulated by stop-cocks at each tuyere, and is under the immediate control of the furnace manager. Upon the introduction of gas into the tuyeres of the furnace the coke charged at the mouth was reduced 30 per cent., this being the amount of coke which I thought could be advantageously replaced by gas. This first estimate has proved to be very close to the working results, though probably the average gas-consumption corresponds to a little less than 30 per cent. of the former coke used. The proportion that we use varies, with the nature of the furnaceburden, between 20 and 40 per cent. of the total fuel. We have used 60 per cent. of gas; but there is difficulty in keeping a cool furnace-mouth when the proportion is so high. With some residues, notably metallic drosses containing some zinc, we have found it best not to use over 20 per cent. gaseous fuel. The percentage used with ore-charges has generally been higher than that used in smelting the higher-lead charges of residues from our refining works. It results from this use of natural gas that the temperature of the hearth is under almost immediate control, and, for this reason chiefly, a cleaner and more uniform slag can be run, and the furnaceworking can be made more nearly independent of the effects of atmospheric conditions or the variable moisture in the furnace-burden.

I HAVE previously demonstrated to you as well as I knew how in what way ores are treated and then how the separated metals are brought to their pure and ultimate limit of perfection by means of smelting and other artificial fires; all except gold, which remained incorporated in the silver. Because the method used for the others does not serve for this, and if indeed it did serve it would be a great labor and could not be done without a great loss of the thing, it is therefore necessary to proceed with the practice of another art if you wish finally to extract gold from the bonds of the intrinsic substance of silver, for it exists bound and scattered in this like the soul in the body of living creatures. In this, unlike the other works where you make direct use of the vigor of the fire, you use a substance that is like water, drawn by the force of fire from a very powerful composition of two materials. This is a very marvelous thing to consider as a liquor because of its powerful effects. It is made by artificial distillations and it has an acid property and the power of corroding and reducing into itself silver and any other metal placed in it, with the exception of gold. Nothing is apparent in it except a pure water. It is indeed a very ingenious thing for which we must be greatly indebted to that philosopher, alchemist, or whoever else was its discoverer. The silver that contains gold is put in this water, and from its former quiet state you will see it change as if forced to combat and breathlessly devour and consume that silver in itself and change it into water. This happens in a very short time and with very little help from the heat of the fire. All the gold that was united in the silver you will see like sand at the bottom, and when the water is taken off by decantation it will freely give you all the gold without any loss. Nor is it so ill-mannered as to fail to restore the silver to its place if you wish; and though it seems to have consumed and spoiled it as it was before, it returns it to you without loss. More than $4,600,000,000 has been invested in the seven years following World War 11. Radial layout’s guiding principle is the grouping under one roof of the operating processes which require continuous supervision. Separate treatment sections are isolated by outside stockpiles fed with radiating conveyors. Hence the name ‘radial’ layout. THIS paper presents geophysical and subsurface data observed in the vicinity of Shafts No. 1 and and 5 of the National Lead Co. lead mines at Fredericktown, Madison County, Missouri, see Fig. 1. The area selected is an excellent example to illustrate the close correlation between geophysical data and geological facts as revealed by drilling and mining. Such close correlations make geophysical applications appropriate to the development of known ore-bodies as well as the exploration for new orebodies.

TO the author's knowledge, only one satisfactory high-resolution technique for etch-pitting dislocations in Cu-Zn alloys has been published.' In that account, pits in 70/30 brass single crystals were produced by etching electrolytic ally in a 30 pct orthophosphoric acid bath. Thereafter, observations were made from surface replicas by electron microscopy. The method of pitting and observation permitted the high resolution necessary for the distinction of individual dislocations in arrays of pile-ups. However, no comment was offered concerning the possibility of obtaining pits which are amenable to optical resolution. Moreover, for adequate results, the electrolytic pitting process is invariably preceded by a polishing stage which could obscure the surface features of interest. Consequently, it would be desirable to be able to delineate, by solely chemical means, dislocations which could be detected by both optical and electron metallo-graphic techniques. This was achieved by the simple expedient of modifying two etchants reported by young2 to reveal dislocations on the (100) planes of pure copper. Single crystals of 70/30 a brass, described previously,3 were sectioned to provide a surface parallel to a set of {100) planes, mechanically polished, and subsequently electropolished at 2.4 v in a solution comprised of 2 parts H3PO4, 4 parts ethanol, and 3 parts water. The inclusion of ethanol tended to inhibit nonuniform surface attack. Etch-pitting was effected by a 2 to 3 sec immersion in a 70 pct aqueous solution of HNO3. The samples were then washed in a fast-flowing stream of water, and rinsed further in distilled water, and ethanol, before drying. It is important to note that this reagent should be either used immediately after mixing, or, if allowed to cool, reheated to about 35°C prior to use. No pitting was obtained at room temperature. Typical results are shown in Fig. 1 where (a) is an optical view of the pitted surface and (b) is an electron micrograph of a silicon monoxide replica shadowed with tungsten oxide. The former is characteristic of a somewhat longer etching time (-6 to 8 sec) which varied with bath temperature. Similar pits accrued from a 1/10 aqueous dilution of another of Young's solutions2—2 M FeC1,6H20 and 7.8 M HBr.

Some writers believe that when austenite transforms completely into pearlite on slow cooling through the thermal critical range, such transformation does not imply the formation of any of the so-called transition constituents: martensite, troostite and sorbite. Might it not be claimed with as much justification that when water freezes it does so suddenly, solid ice being obtained without passing through the intermediate stages of ice and water? Obviously, regardless of the speed of solidification, this would be erroneous. Before reaching the completed solid condition, this must of necessity pass through an unbroken series of stages when the system consists of mixtures of water and of ice, the former decreasing and the latter increasing in amount. Are not these "transitionV stages in the freezing of water similar to the transition stages occurring in the transformation of austenite into pearlite? To clarify, let us consider in Fig. 1 the mechanism of the transformation of eutectoid steel from its austenitic to its pearlitic condition as it cools slowly through its thermal critical range. It is generally admitted that this transformation is the result of two distinct phenomena: (1) the allotropic change of gamma iron into alpha iron and (2) the crystallizing out of solution of the carbide Fe3C. Whether this crystallizing of Fe3C implies also its formation is immaterial for our purpose. In other words, whether it is the carbon in atomic dispersion which is present in gamma iron or molecules of Fe3C has no bearing upon the matter to be discussed. The transformation of gamma iron into alpha iron cannot take place suddenly. It must of necessity be progressive, regardless of the speed with which it may take place. At A, for instance, there would be present AB gamma iron and BC alpha iron. The distance MN does not refer to falling temperature, but to the passage of time. It may be assumed that the transformation takes place at a constant temperature (the Ar321 point). In a similar way, the crystallization of Fe3C out of the austenite solid solution must be progressive as depicted between M and N. At A there would be present AB gamma iron, BC alpha iron, CD carbon dissolved in gamma and in alpha iron and DE Fe3C. THE mapping of slant-hole oil fields is complicated by the fact that relationships between wells are subject to variations in three dimensions and are not readily adaptable to representation on a plane surface. Formalized perspectives usually expand into an undecipherable maze of lines and peg models with the necessary supporting dividers serve only to awe the beholder with their perplexity. The usual compromise arrived at is a plotting of the projection of the courses of all of the wells in the field onto a horizontal plane (Fig. I). These complicated plots, when used in conjunction with the individual vertical projections of the wells, heretofore have been the most practical foundation for the study of general field problems. This method has many shortcomings, however, which are not found in the recently developed straight-hole equivalent projection method. The new method supplies a series of maps similar to the type now in common use in straight-hole fields. It is remarkably simple to use and supplies a ready check on clearances between wells. Perhaps the method can best be understood if the steps that led to its development are described. Common practice of oil-well surveyors is to supply the owner with a tabling of the survey and a plan view plotted against the true meridian. If a vertical projection is plotted, it is usually plotted separately and shows vertical depths against the projection of the stations along a section line joining the top and bottom of the hole on the plan view. A more practical method would be to plot the section line of the plan parallel to the abscissa of the vertical projection (Fig. 2). If this is done, any line parallel to the "base line" will pass through the points on each projection that represent a single point in the hole. Another very useful graph, which the well surveyor could provide, would be plotting of vertical depths against measured depths. Fig. 3 illustrates the next step facilitated by this form of plotting. The lines designated "well A" represent the proposed course of a hole to be drilled. Superimposed on the drawing, in its proper relative position, is the plan view and a portion of the vertical projection of a present producer, "well B." From an inspection of the plan view we arrive at the correct conclusion that the only indicated possibility of collision is at the point of crossing of the wells on the plan view. Referring to the vertical projection, note that the vertical depths of stations on B, in the vicinity of the crossing, are plotted on the same plane of projection as A. The clearance is the indicated distance between the two vertical sections measured along the parallel to the "base line," which passes through the point of intersection of the plan view. Repeat this process for the other wells crossing the proposed course of A on the plan view and you have a preliminary check of clearance for the proposed course. Careful estimates indicate that during 1942 new discoveries and extensions in West Central Texas added oil reserves slightly in excess of the eight million barrels produced. Drilling activity fell 40 per cent below 1941 and 82 per cent below the normal drilling activity of the late 1920's. Total production for the district continued its downward trend, now being less than % of the 42.7 million barrels peak in 1921. Rapid revival of activity is not probable under existing conditions, as costs of discovery, development and operations on the average probably now exceed current market price for the oil, the latter having remained constant since the spring of I941. Costs have advanced materially since the third quarter of 1941, when reports to the Tariff Commission indicated a margin of profit of 13.3 per barrel. Physical as well as economic conditions are holding back the amount of drilling in this district. The lenticular sands are not suited to 40-acre spacing regulations. There is no surplus of experienced oil-field labor. To reduce costs, much second-hand material is used for all except the deeper wells.. Price controls have retarded movement of used equipment by prescribing maximum prices that arc too low for the better grade materizl, thus making , owners reluctant to sell. On the other hand, buyers are unwilling to pay ceiling prices asked by sellers for poor material. Seventeen new oil fields and five new gas fields were found during 1942. Extensions and deeper 'drilling brought favorable results in eight older fields. The most significant new developments appear to have been in Coleman, Jones, Shackelford and Taylor Counties. A 5800-ft. completion in Wise County brought this county into the producing column for the first time. None of these new discoveries can he rated above one million barrel reserve on the basis of present development. Probably the most important development was discovery of a deeper pay (Gunsight lime) in the Wimberly field of Jones County, which shows promise of producing over an area of about 1000 acres. Jones and Shackelford Counties still lead the district in total annual production. Discovery of the Reddin pool, north central Taylor County, is credited to geochemical methods, making one success out of five or more wildcats based on such methods. Geophysical surveying increased decidedly during 1942 and returns from these studies are expected during coming years. Most of the wildcatting in the district is still based on surface and subsurface geological structural mapping, study of log data as to distribution of prospective producing reservoirs, and drilling in proximity to previous showings of oil and gas. Geological debate continues as to the proper correlation of the 100 to 300 ft. of gray lime that has produced more than 100 million barrels in the Parks, Brecken-ridge, Curry, Eliasville, Ibex, Pioneer and other important fields of this district. Fossils indicate that this limestone is younger than the Atoka beds of Oklahoma. On a structural basis most geologists include this formation with the Bend but a number of paleontologists believe it is more properly classified with the Strawn.

The purpose of this article is to describe several types of borehole lining in common use, and especially to offer a relatively new means of reducing the expense of maintaining boreholes where they are subjected to corrosive action of water flowing either inside or outside of their casing. In the Anthracite region of Pennsylvania, boreholes are used for many purposes, the principal ones being: openings between the surface and underground workings through which are passed steam, water and compressed-air lines, ropeways from surface hoists to underground rope haulages, conduits for electric power and signal lines, water-discharge lines from underground pumping stations, and inlets to mine workings for flushing material. Linings for Boreholes The inadequacy of steel pipe for use in boreholes has long been recognized. Various substitute materials have been tried, including screw-joint cast-iron pipe (Fig. I). Cast-iron pipe, while very effective as a discharge line for acid water (mine water) being pumped to the surface, is not so effective when serving as a conduit for silt and crushed rock being flushed underground for filling mine voids. Terra cotta pipe (Fig. 2) has been used in boreholes, and lasts a long time if the glazed inner surface of the pipe remains intact. Its installation in a borehole is very difficult and is recommended only where it is certain that there will be no subsidence of the surrounding territory. Accessibility in order properly to join each section of the pipe is essential to a satisfactory job. In large water holes, where it is possible to lower a man into the hole for sealing the joints of the pipe, glazed terra cotta pipe has been used successfully for delivering mine water from pumps in the mines. For large holes used for flushing refuse into mine workings where the surface wash is shallow, standard paving brick have been used to form a tube through the wash to the bedrock. These brick are laid radially, backed by common brick and cobbles laid in cement. It is obvious that the shaft through the wash must be large enough to permit a man to work in it. The flushing material is carried through bare rock from the juncture at bedrock to the openings underground. This plan has been used particularly where a cast-iron surface line is laid upon the surface to carry the flushing material from the breaker to the hole, and down the hole continuously, with no opening to the air at the top of the hole, thereby eliminating the necessity of an attendant at this point (Fig. 3). Another similar type of borehole lining is constructed of hexagonal pieces of vitrified brick (Fig. 4). This type requires a steel drive pipe through the surface wash large enough to provide a finished tube of the desired size surrounded by a brick wall about 4 in. thick. The special bricks are laid in cement, six to a circle, around a lubricated pipe used as a form, and lowered in sections inside the large drive pipe; the bottom section is seated in a socket drilled in the solid rock, having the same inside

The caustic extraction of silica from Wisconsin and Minnesota taconite was investigated by bomb digestion over the temperature range from 312 to 40S°F at caustic concentrations from 25 to 500 gpl. Residual concentrates containing as much as 65 pct iron were obtained. The high rate of silica extraction is related to a microcrystalline variety of quartz, since it is shown that the rate of extraction of silica from quartz is directly proportional to its surface area. Increasing dependence on foreign ore reserves makes the need for developing the technology necessary for treatment of our low grade ores even greater than it was at the time of World War 11, when much research was conducted on the extraction of alumina from clays. Representative of these were the studies carried on at the University of Illinois.' More recently, the U. S. Bureau of Mines investigated the production of alumina from anorthosite, and currently the aluminum industry is showing renewed research interest in this field. The studies reported here are part of a continuing research program based on the above concepts and aimed at the eventual development of processes for the treatment of low grade ores, particularly those of iron. The fact that large reserves 3 of low grade nonmagnetic taconite are contained in the iron formation of the Wisconsin Gogebic range have made this ore an important and attractive target for investigation. The idea of removing silica by caustic extraction is not new.495 The digestion in caustic solution of ground flint, diatomite, and other forms of chalcedonic silica is the basis for the production of soluble sodium silicates by the wet-process. Upgrading bauxites by the caustic extraction of silica has been investigated6 and is the subject of a German patent.7 Although mention is made by Roe' of the caustic extraction of silica from low grade Michigan and Wisconsin iron ores, and he lists a number of patents and references on the subject, recent work in the field does not appear to be extensive. As far as the author knows, there has been no work in this field on these particular ores. It is hoped that this paper will stimulate further investigation which will eventually lead to an econclmic means of processing these large low grade reserbes. TACONITES The taconites investigated in this study were from Minnesota and Wisconsin. That from Minnesota, a semi-taconite, Nas obtained from the Oliver Iron Mining Division, U. S. Steel Corporation, and represents a sample of an oxidized iron formation from their King Mine on the Mesabi range. The Wisconsin taconite came originally from the trench sampling of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and represents a composite of the Norrie, Pabst, Yale, Plymouth, and Pence members of the Gogebic iron formation. Assays on these samples are given in Table I. A typical calcu1atr:d average analysis of the Wisconsin taconite is given in Table 11. Chemically, the Minnesota semi-taconite sample contains about 39 pct iron and 39 pct silica, while the Wisconsin taconite contains 30 pct iron and 53 pct silica, both on the dry basis.

TIE Pioneer mining district, better known as the Superior district, from its principal town, is located in Pinal County in south-central Arizona about 80 miles east of Phoenix and 22 miles west of Miami. The average elevation is about 2800 ft. in the valleys and the summits of the ranges reach 2000 ft. above this. Superior is situated on the north bank of Queen Creek where it emerges from one of those ranges into a more or less basin-shaped valley. The drainage of Queen Creek is to the southwest and the flood waters spread out and lose themselves in the desert northeast of Florence, the county seat of Pinal County.

WHAT are the chief branches of the mining engineering profession today? In an effort to analyze the structure of the profession, for practical purposes, a quantitative study has been made of the membership of the A.I.M.E., and is herein reported for the first time. In spite of the effect that a long history and a relatively small group of professional workers have had in limiting specialization in mining engineering, there has nevertheless grown up a wide variety of specialties in this field. More than a hundred different kinds of engineers were discovered among the titles given by Institute members in the Directory, ranging from "advisory engineer" and "American engineer" down to "wire-rope engineer" and "works engineer." How should all these titles be defined and interpreted? How many of them should be relegated as meaningless or confusing? What are the relationships among the remaining useful designations? Should some of them be grouped as "metallurgical" or "chemical," or under some other head?

TWO shafts have been completed since the spring of 1948 when underground development started, and three are now under construction. The new program provides two main ore shafts, Nos. 3A and 3B, spaced 195 ft apart and located on the south- western end of the orebody. It is planned that eventually 35,000 tons of copper ore per day will be hoisted by these identical four-compartment shafts. The third shaft of this new group is 600 ft from the present No. 1 shaft and will provide caged sup- plies for the underground mining operations. This No. 4 shaft has the largest cross-section of any shaft in Arizona.
