DuRing the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide. The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the overburden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and transported to the dump in quarry cars. Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semicircle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft. above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river. As quarrying progressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp., 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft. above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting bays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage. An 8-in. suction line, equipped with a strainer and a foot valve, takes the water from a concrete sump at the edge of the river. GOLD occurs in many mineral deposits in the rocks of the Canadian Shield. It is present in the ores of many base metals and a considerable quantity is recovered as a by-product from the production of copper at Noranda, of nickel and copper at Sudbury and of copper and zinc at. Flinflon. But the greater part of the gold production of Canada is from deposits in which gold is the only metal of value. No gold is obtained from placer deposits within the borders of the Canadian Shield. A brief review of the geological relations of some of the gold deposits of the Canadian Shield will be presented in an attempt to explain certain associations. Only those which are being worked for their gold content will be considered and descriptions will be conned to representative types of deposits, chiefly those of major importance; a few others, differ-ing in certain features from those of the older and larger mines, will be included in order to illustrate the general conditions in which gold occurs in these ancient rocks. Brief summaries will be given of the geological relations of the Beattie and Siscoe mines of northern Quebec, of the mines of the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake areas of northeastern Ontario and of the Howey, Central Patricia and Little Long Lac mines of northwest-ern Ontario. Genetic relations to igneous rocks of granitic composition, outcropping in the vicinity, have been assumed for many of these deposits. Undoubt-edly the ore minerals have been derived from igneous sources and, for some occurrences, there is evidence suggestive of genetic relationship between the ore bodies and neighbouring intrusive rocks. During the past few years, however,, many investigators have expressed doubt of the genetic relationship of certain ore bodies to igneous masses near which they occur. As will be seen from references in the following descriptions the importance of the structural conditions in localizing deposition has been realized. The compositions of coexisting phases in the methane-propane-n-pentane system were determined at 160° and -2 20°F. throughout the two-phase region, at pressures above 500 lb. per sq. in. The experimental results permitted the calculation of gas-liquid equilibrium constants as well as the establishment of the critical behavior of this ternary system. Although many binary paraffin hydrocarbon systems have been investigated, the experimental work relating to the phase behavior of ternary paraffin hydrocarbon mixtures at elevated pressures is relatively scarce, being limited to a study of the meth-ane-propane-PL-pentane system at 100°F.l,2 However, Guter and co-workers have studied the phase behavior of the methane-ethane-ethylene system at relatively low temperatures. Information concerning the phase behavior of ternary systems is of value in predicting the behavior of the components in multicomponent systems, since the influence of pressure, temperature, and concentration may be individually ascertained. In the light of the importance of such information, the study of this ternary system was extended to higher temperatures in order to increase the field of temperature in which the data could be applied. Since all states encountered in this investigation are above the critical temperature of methane, the details of its phase behavior are not of direct significance. The properties of propane in the heterogeneous region were taken from a correlation3 based upon recently published data. The corresponding information for n-pentane was taken from experimentally measured vapor pressures and volumetric data.4 The rnethane-propane system has been studied throughout the two-phase region at temperatures above 70°F.,5 while the phase behavior of the propane-n-pentane system has been established for temperatures above 160°F.6 The volumetric and phase behavior of the methane-72-pentane system has been studied in detai1.7,8 The experimental measurements serve to establish with adequate accuracy the phase behavior of the components and of the constituent binary systems for this ternary system. It is believed that, with the exception of the measurements for the methane-propane system, the uncertainties in the earlier data relating to the pure substances and the binary mixtures are probably less than those associated with the values reported here. Method The methods and apparatus employed in this investigation have been described.137 In principle, the method involved the withdrawal of samples of the coexisting gas and liquid phases from a vessel containing a heterogeneous mixture of methane, propane and n-pentane. It will hardly be worth while to spend time over the discovery of this mine, how lumps of galena were picked up and brought to town, and how legends were told of an old mine from which Revolutionary bullets were made. This is an entirely new mine, with no evidences of former or ancient workings in its immediate vicinity to guide or attract the prospector. The first pit was opened in May, 1874. In August I made a visit to this pit, which was 6 feet wide in the northwest direction, 12 feet long north 80° east, and 6 feet deep..About 4 tons of a galena carrying gray copper, siderite, and quartz, had been taken from this pit. Activity data of carbon as a function of both temperature and composition throughout the stable austenite range is correlated by mearts of an equation derived from a quasi-chemical model. The carbon activity data of austmite for temperatures between 800° and 1200°C are utilized in conjunction with the activity of carbon calculated for the y solidus using the activity of carbon in liquid iron and published austenite-liquid equilibria. The results agree very well with Chip-man's correlation; however, a small difference in the activity of carbon in the high-temperature range of the austenite field is evident. Excellent agreement is found for the heat of solution of graphite in infinitely dilute austenite; from this study the value is 10,550 cal as compared with Chipman's value of 10,680 cal. AS part of a program to study microsegregation in dendritic solidification of ternary Fe-C-Cr alloys, it was desirable to be able to describe the equilibria between austenite and liquid iron in Fe-C-Cr alloys. In this regard, it was necessary to correlate existing data on the activity of carbon in Fe-C austenite as a function of both temperature and composition. At that time, Chipman's analysis1 of the thermodynamics of binary Fe-C austenite was not available. It will be shown that this study and Chipman's study agree rather well throughout the stable austenite range of temperature and composition; however, some small differences appear at temperatures greater than the eutectic temperature. Benz and Elliott 2 presented isoactivity lines for austenite superimposed on their revised Fe-C phase diagram. Using an expression from Darken and Gury 3 representing Smith's4 activity data between 800" and 1000°C, they found that the activities extrapolated above 1000°C to the solidus did not agree with the activities determined from the corresponding liquidus compositions. It is the purpose of the following argument to reconcile carbon activity data of austenite with the activity in liquid Fe-C alloys as determined by Rist and Chipman. 5 In addition, a simple analytical expression is sought for computational convenience. ACTIVITY DATA OF CARBON IN ZRON Fig. 1 shows the activity of carbon in Fe-C austenite as determined by Smith, 4 Schenck and Kaiser, 6 Scheil et a1.,7 and Bungardt et al.' The lines are merely drawn to separate the data into the respective isotherms. These data are inadequate to determine the activity of carbon at temperatures greater than 1200°C. Age hardening alloys are quenched from the solution treatment to room temperature in order to retain a supersaturated solid solution. Some alloys age "naturally" in this condition but in most alloys aging is induced "artificially" by heating to intermediate temperatures. Cold working of the supersaturated solid solution accelerates the aging process and quenching strains have the same effect. The investigation reported here is a study of the progress of aging in specimens quenched directly from the solution treatment to various aging temperatures. This procedure reduces the temperature interval of quenching and the resulting quenching stresses. It also eliminates any changes which would take place in the undercooled sample at room temperature prior to aging at an elevated temperature. Isothermal aging is thus approached and its kinetics may be studied. An aluminum-copper and an aluminum-silicon alloy were chosen for this investigation. The aging mechanism of aluminum-copper alloys is complex while the aging of aluminum-silicon alloys is nearly ideal. As standards of comparison for the samples directly quenched to the aging temperature, specimens were also age hardened by the usual procedure in which solution treated samples are first quenched to room temperature and then reheated to the aging temperature. Review of Previous Work The mechanism of age hardening has been the subject of a controversy which has ranged from the theory of outright precipitation of an equilibrium phase to theories based on subtle changes occurring in the matrix prior to precipitation. A detailed critical review of the literature up to 1939 is available1 and contributions to the general theory of age hardening continue to be made.2,3 Age hardening, whatever its mechanism, involves the nucleation of a second phase within a supersaturated solid solution. Theoretical considerations4,5 indicate that the rate of nucleation reaches a maximum at an intermediate temperature below the temperature at which supersaturation sets in. Studies of precipitation at various subcritical temperatures have demonstrated that the largest property changes in a given time occur at such intermediate temperatures.6,7,8 The precipitation of a phase from supersaturated solid solution is accelerated by strains which may result from quenching or cold work. Phillips and Brick9 established that quenching strains are an essential condition for the age hardening of aluminum-copper alloys at room temperature, at least for aging periods of less than 30 days. They also found that on aging at 300°C the hardness increased faster and reached a higher maximum after quenching into water than after quenching directly to the aging temperatures. May 219t, 1872. THE Institute assembled in the rooms of the Geographical Society at the Cooper Union, Tuesday evening at 8 P.M. President Raymond called the meeting to order, and introduced Mr. Abram S. Hewitt, who welcomed the Institute to New York. President Raymond, in behalf of the Institute, replied. The President then read the following report of the Council for the past year. The Council respectfully report that the American Institute of Mining Engineers has held four meetings-at Wilkes-Barre, Bethlehem, Troy, and Philadelphia, respectively-all of which have been well attended, and socially and professionally most successful. The proceedings of these meetings having been published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, and sent to all members and associates, are sufficiently well known. Forty-four papers, by twenty-six authors, have been read. These papers embrace s wide range of subjects, and prove the practical character of the proceedings of the Institute. The finances are in a satisfactory condition. By the report of the Treasurer it appears that $1290.10 have been received, $519.90 expended, and that $770.20 now remains in the treasury exclusive of fees for 1872. This fund, it is hoped, will be so increased by voluntary subscriptions as to enable us before long to issue s volume of our most important transactions in a permanent form. The Council has made a favorable arrangement with the Scientific Publishing Company, publishing the Engineering and Mining Journal, by which that journal became the organ of the Institute for the first publication of the proceedings, papers, and notices to members. This arrangement it is proposed to continue through the present year unless the Institute shall otherwise direct. It is not intended to supersede the publication of an annual or occasional volume, but to maintain an interest in the Institute, and to serve the convenience of members while our funds do not permit s more ambitious publication.

Top-slicing was introduced in the Pachuca district in 1917 by T. C. Baker, at that time mine superintendent of the Santa Gertmdis mine. There then existed 1200 ft. below the surface, lying between the fourteenth and eighteenth levels (a vertical distance of 354.2 ft.) a block of ore having a length of 295 ft. and an average width of 82 ft. and dipping at an angle of 65°. This block lay in the hanging wall of the vein and consisted of highly altered and fractured andesite, cut through with mineralized quartz stringers. On the foot-wall side, 26 ft. of old filling, left by former operators, was of payable grade. Stoping therein was first undertaken by the square-set filling system, but because of the extremely heavy hanging wall and loose dry filling in the foot wall, all square setting had to be accompanied by spiling, which made the operation exceedingly slow and costly. A system of mining was sought that would eliminate the difficulties inherent to the square-set system in heavy ground and that at the same time would effect the desired economies in mining. After several years, top-slicing has met all the conditions most satisfactorily, so that when similar conditions presented themselves in El Bordo mine, this method was adopted with necessary modifications. El Bordo mine is operated by the Santa Gertrudis company, and is situated about two miles north of Pachuca. Because of the diversity of the orebodies, a number of different mining methods are in use, among them top-slicing. Description of Block of Ore Former operators, when mining the original vein, left in the foot wall ore of too low grade to be profitable at the time; also, considerabe low-grade material was sorted out and stored as filling in the stopes. The problems of caving and underground subsidence can be considered as the failure of a highly compacted rock and its subsequent flow in the form of broken rock. The problem is complex because the propagation of failure and flow have to be considered simultaneously; the yield strength of the virgin rock and the broken rock are different; and, while under certain conditions it is sufficient to consider the virgin rock as homogeneous, the density and the yield function of broken rock are both pressure and time dependent. A study of the failure and flow of solids with a pressure dependent yield function has been published recently by Jenike.' In this paper the density of the broken rock is assumed to be only time dependent and the consequences are examined in the case of one-dimensional vertical subsidence into an initial cavity. The following describes an attempt to develop a tool which, in combination with other tools, may lead to mathematical solutions of real problems of caving and subsidence. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM An underground cavity of horizontal cross section 4 = 1 and height 6 is assumed to exist at some depth below the surface. At the time t = 0 rock above the cavity fails and completely fills out the cavity with expanded broken material. With passing time the broken rock consolidates and subsidence proceeds continuously upuard in a vertical shaft. The phenomenon is one-dimensional (see Fig. 1). The problem consists of finding the displacement and the velocity with which the frlmt of the subsidence (wave front) moves upward as a function of the time and of the rock properties. DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS CONTROLLING THE PHENOMENON With the assumptions that the broken rock is a continuum and that the subsidence occurs continuously, we can apply the one-dimensional differential equation of contitiuity (conservation of mass) and the equation of preservation of momentum The latter equation is replaced by an assumed relation based on experience, which takes care of the

This year the metal mining industry is in for some difficult decisions as the nation struggles to control inflationary pressures resulting from higher production costs and a money-squeeze policy. Re- clouding these problems will be campaign oratory as Congress seeks reelection. Charges will be hurled back and forth between a Republican White House and a Democratic Congress. Inflation and Vietnam will be the big one. Hut pollution i. coming on strong. President Nixon has formed a new Council on Environmental Quality although he already had named a similar unit within his Cabinet six months ago. Both are charged with bringing 1.0 bear all of the Federal Government's talents on the focal points of antipollution measures The biggest task will be to find out how many different "units" are currently mixed up in these efforts.

In preparing a well for pumping, observations are often made of the fluid level in the well bore or bottom-hole pressures at various times before equilibrium has set in. From a qualitative point of view one may immediately infer that if the rise in the bottom-hole pressure or fluid level is rapid the permeability of the sand about the well bore is large, and converse conclusions may be drawn if the rise is slow. However, a more quantitative estimate will give additional information of value, as will be shown in this paper. To derive such an estimate we may proceed as follows. Let h be the fluid height, above the sand face, at time t, and let yo be the average density of the fluid that enters the bore. The bottom-hole pressure, for a fluid height h will therefore be p = rogh, neglecting, of course, the friction drop in the well bore, while the fluid is rising, as may be justifiably done for most pumping wells. If a is the free area of the open-flow string—assumed to be uniform— the rate of production from the sand during the rise of fluid will be: where the last part of the equation merely indicates that, in general, the production rate Q must be considered as a function of the back pressure, and is determined by it alone. In fact, equation 1 shows that if the rate of rise of the pressure or fluid level is determined as a function of the height of rise, or p, for a number of values of the latter, this functional relation between Q and p will be immediately given. Conversely, if we know this functional relation, the rate of increase of p or h may be predicted, or, by observing the rate of rise of p or h some of the constants of the sand may be determined. The results described in this article are based on field work conducted during the periods APril-May, 1939, and MaY-JulY, 1940. The United States Potash CO. is mining potash on Government land under a permit from the Department of the Interior and the geophysical investigation mas completed under a cooperative arrangemerit made between that company and the Conservation Branch of the Geological Survey. The writer, a member of the Section of Chemistry and Physics of the Geologic Branch, was assigned to this investigation. Four definite objectives were in mind for the geophysical work in the studies over the salt deposits. The first was to determine the measure of success that could be attained in this type of work with the resistivity methods that were to be employed. These methods had been introduced into the work of the Conservation Branch by Benjamin E. Jones for the investigation of dam sites, and have been used under his direction by the author for such work. If the method proved to be applicable, an l was to be made to contour the top of the salt beds and also the other formation boundaries known to be present in this area. Salt-water aquifers were to be studied in an effort to determine their boundaries, and an attempt was to be made to delineate the potash-bearing beds. Others have made, and reported, resistivity studies over saliferous deposits in different areas. Friedell and Messrs. Schlumberger2 reported geophysical work performed in the disrovery of the salt domes of Alsace; Carrette and Kelly3 described the geology of the same area. Leonardon and Kelly4 published a resistivity curve obtained over the Hettenschlag dome, and a further discussion of this same area was given by the Messrs. Schlum-berger5 in a communication. Messrs. Alty6 described studies 0" salt deposits in which the sing[e-probe method was used. Sinerez7 mentions that electrical methods were tried over salt deposits in Spain. Geoffrey and Charrin8 show a resistivity curve obtained over marl, gypsiferous marl and salt which is similar to that obtained over the New Mexico salt deposits. Kelly9 reported resistivity work performetl with the ground comparator of Zuschlag over the salt deposits near Syracuse, N. Y., where the Salina formation is at a depth of 700 to 800 ft. Some structural studies on the potash basin of Alsace are described by Poldini.10 Another single-probe resistivity study, made over salt deposits in New Mexico, is briefly described by Heiland,ll through the courtesy of Harry Aurand, of the Midwest Refining CO.

The United States Potash CO. is mining potash on Government land under a permit from the Department of the Interior and the geophysical investigation mas completed under a cooperative arrangemerit made between that company and the Conservation Branch of the Geological Survey. The writer, a member of the Section of Chemistry and Physics of the Geologic Branch, was assigned to this investigation. Four definite objectives were in mind for the geophysical work in the studies over the salt deposits. The first was to determine the measure of success that could be attained in this type of work with the resistivity methods that were to be employed. These methods had been introduced into the work of the Conservation Branch by Benjamin E. Jones for the investigation of dam sites, and have been used under his direction by the author for such work. If the method proved to be applicable, an l was to be made to contour the top of the salt beds and also the other formation boundaries known to be present in this area. Salt-water aquifers were to be studied in an effort to determine their boundaries, and an attempt was to be made to delineate the potash-bearing beds. Others have made, and reported, resistivity studies over saliferous deposits in different areas. Friedell and Messrs. Schlumberger2 reported geophysical work performed in the disrovery of the salt domes of Alsace; Carrette and Kelly3 described the geology of the same area. Leonardon and Kelly4 published a resistivity curve obtained over the Hettenschlag dome, and a further discussion of this same area was given by the Messrs. Schlum-berger5 in a communication. Messrs. Alty6 described studies 0" salt deposits in which the sing[e-probe method was used. Sinerez7 mentions that electrical methods were tried over salt deposits in Spain. Geoffrey and Charrin8 show a resistivity curve obtained over marl, gypsiferous marl and salt which is similar to that obtained over the New Mexico salt deposits. Kelly9 reported resistivity work performetl with the ground comparator of Zuschlag over the salt deposits near Syracuse, N. Y., where the Salina formation is at a depth of 700 to 800 ft. Some structural studies on the potash basin of Alsace are described by Poldini.10 Another single-probe resistivity study, made over salt deposits in New Mexico, is briefly described by Heiland,ll through the courtesy of Harry Aurand, of the Midwest Refining CO.

As a part of a symposium on the relations of structure to ore deposi-tion, in February 1938, the writer presented some tentative opinions derived from his experience with a number of important lead-zinc replace-ment deposits. These ideas were set forth, as a basis for discussion and a stimulus to further inquiry, in a mimeographed leaflet that read as follows: Intimate acquaintance with a number of lead and zinc deposits in metamorphosed limestones seems to indicate the existence of certain common features from which can be established some general principles governing the localization of ore in this type of formation. It is suspected that these principles can be applied, with modifica-tions, to mineralization in unmetamorphosed limestone. In metamorphosed forma-tions, some observed rules are as follows: 1. Bands or masses of pure limestone are very resistant to replacement by ore solutions, and are likely either to contain no ore or to resist replacement until near the end of mineralization. The reason for this apparently is physical, not chemical, since microscopic data indicate that when ore is deposited by far the greater part of it substitutes for carbonate. The chief factor is believed to be a lack of porosity in massive limestone that has undergone flowage and recrystallization. 2. Masses of intensely siliceous or silicated rock are likewise unfavorable ore receptacles. This seems to be accounted for by two factors: (a) chemical unsuit-ability or resistance to replacement, and (b) physical resistance to small-scale brecci-ation, which might facilitate the opening of effective channelways for solutions. Some low-grade ore may occur, however, and also sporadic fracture fillings. 3. The optimum condition for ore reception appears to be found in bands or areas containing carbonate and silicates (or quartz) intimately mingled in something like equal proportions. In this situation movement is likely to result in mixed flowage and fracture, producing a fine-textured porosity that admits solutions freely and provides access to an abundance of replaceable carbonate. Cleavage cracks in some minerals such as diopside are believed to facilitate the penetration of solutions. 4. Certain minerals or assemblages are regarded as favorable impurities in a lime-stone and others as unfavorable. Original quartz, and subsequently developed diopside, and perhaps garnet, are typical favorable pre-ore gangue; in general rather equidimensional, brittle minerals. Tremolite, biotite, and probably wollastonite, are typical unfavorable pre-ore gangue; in general highly elongated and somewhat flexible minerals likely to develop under strong shearing stresses. 5. Tentative opinion is that the ratio of lime and magnesia in a limestone-is of little or no importance.

DURING the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide. The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the over- burden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and transported to the dump in quarry cars. Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semi- circle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft. above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river. As quarrying progressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp., 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft. above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting bays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage. An 8-in. suction line, equipped with a strainer and a foot valve, takes the water from a concrete sump at the edge of the river. The pipe line from the pump consists of 1750 ft. of 8-in. spiral steel flanged pipe and 800 ft. of 4-in. spiral steel flanged pipe. The connection from the pump

During the past ten years, the trend on the Mesabi Range has been toward the establishment of integrated operations which mine, concentrate, and pelletize the large reserves of magnetic taconite. However, since the supply of open-pit ores of acceptable quality is by no means inexhaustible, it has been proposed that it be supplemented by developing the magnetic taconites that extend down dip past the economic limits for open-pit methods. In Phase I of a long range study, Pfleider and Yardley1 collected information on the general character of the Mesabi iron formation at depth and proposed that an underground lane-and-pillar mining system be considered to extract those high grade layers where they might exist over a considerably areal extent. An approximate cost estimate was included initially, with the thought of later developing a feasibility study as time permitted.

A DISLOCATION mechanism has been described by Cottrell' by which metals can yield locally, I. form Liiders bands, giving rise to a characteristic stress-strain curve with a sharp yield point and appreciable strain at constant or decreasing stress. It is undoubtedly the best mechanism that has been suggested to date." In its present development, however, the dislocation mechanism provides a more satisfying explanation for the sharp yield point than for the extensive localized flow occurring at the lower yield stress. The primary objective in this paper is to extend the dislocation mechanism to account for localized cataclysmic flow by a dislocation collision process and to give experimental evidence to support such a process. Only the yielding of iron containing carbon -will be discussed, although other metal-solute systems are known to behave similarly. Cottrell Mechanism In brief, Cottrell explains the yield point in the following way: The dislocations in iron which must propagate to produce slip usually lie at the center of local concentrations of carbon atoms, since segregation about these dislocatlons relieves some of the local stress resulting from them. A dislocation surrounded by a "cloud" of carbon atoms is thus anchored, and a higher stress is required to set it in motion than to move a free dislocation. Considering all available dislocatlons to be anchored in this fashion, the iron exhibits a yield point when the first dialocations break free and move through the lattice causing slip. This first breaking away of a dislocation enables other dislocations to break loose by "interaction" and the process becomes a cataclysm producing local deformation or Luders bands. The yield point in the stress-strain diagram for iron is absent in freshly deformed material, but returns gradually with time; the phenomenon is one aspect of what is called strain aging. The rate at which the yield point returns following straining depends on the temperature of aging. According to Cottrell the rate of return of the yield point in strained iron is limited by the rate of diffusion of carbon at the aging temperature, the mechanism is onr: of reforming the solute atmospheres around carbon-free dislocations that had stopped moving coincident with the removal of stress. If the specimen is retested immediately after straining and unloading, carbon will not have had time to diffuse to, and re-anchor, dislocations and the yield point will not occur. The carbon diffusion limitation for the rate of strain aging apparently applies if the criterion for strain aging is either the change in hardness" or the change in electrical resistance" of the strained speci- men with aging time. The possibility exists, however, that the yield point actually returns to strained iron at some rate other than that deduced from hardness or electrical resistance data. Therefore, as a preliminary experiment, the rate of yield point return in a rimmed sheet steel strained 6 pct in tension was measured at 27°, 77°, and 100°C. A plot of yield-point elongation for each of these temperatures against aging time appears in Fig. 1. The aging process is described by curves which rise to a plateau value of elongation that seems independent of temperature, but at a rate that depends on temperature. Very long times lead to a further rise in the yield-point elongation above the plateau value. However, if the later increase in yield-point elongation is ignored and the log of the time to reach half the plateau value of elongation is plotted against 1/T, a straight line results for which an activation energy of about 25 kcal pel- mol may be assigned. Within the accuracy of this sort of experiment this is approximately the activation energy for the diffusion of carbon in iron (20 kcal per mol), and the carbon diffusion limitation suggested for the yield-point return on strain aging is valid. The Cottrell mechanism thus explains in a qualitative manner the occurrence of a yield point in iron and its return with strain aging. It fails, however, to explain some of the other experimental observations that have been made of the yielding behavior of iron. For example, it is known that the yield point in iron becomes less pronounced with increasing grain size. Annealed single crystals of iron have very small yield-point elongations .if indeed they have any,' compared to a polycrystalline steel. If the only requirement for a yield point is that the dislocations in the lattice of the annealed. material be anchored by carbon atoms, the difference in the behavior of single crystals and polycrystals is not explained. That a dislocation mechanism may be entirely consistent with little or no yield point in an annealed single crystal will become apparent later when dislocation interaction is discussed.
