Meeting, Apr. 25, 1913.-President Rand recommended the appointment of the Nominating Committee (see p. i), and a Committee on the Use of Electricity in Mines (see p. xliv), which committees were duly approved and appointed. President Rand recommended the establishment of. a Committee on Mining Methods, and requested authority for the President to appoint the members of this Committee, both of which recommendations were approved. The name of the Committee on Economic Geology was, at its own request, changed to the Committee on Mining Geology. The request of the Iron and Steel Committee, that a meeting of the Institute, under the auspices of this Committee, be held in the latter part of October, the place of meeting to be decided later, was granted.

J. S. Unger,* Pittsburgh, Pa. (written discussion?).-I heartily agree with the author's suggestion, near the close of the paper, that greater uniformity in the making and use of brick is desirable. The effect of the manner of laying the brick, the mortar or cement used, the necessity of standardizing the shapes, the elimination of irregular or poorly designed brick, and the necessity for uniform operating conditions were pointed out by me some years ago. Many factors influence the quality of firebricks. The following figures obtained from bricks during their making or after completion show the need for greater uniformity in their quality. These results were obtained from regular commercial bricks, shipped to the consumer. In many cases the samples were from the same car load.

Y.-I would like to emphasize what Mr. Phalen says in his paper regarding the possible utilization of the waste acids in the West for the acid concentration of phosphate rock, and to call attention to the fact that this is already being done by Mr. Laist at Anaconda, who is producing concentrated phosphoric acid from these low-grade rocks. During the last year, he has not been able to carry this along to the extent he, had expected, owing to the tremendous demand which they have had for all the acid they can produce, so instead of having a. surplus of acid, as was expected, they are really short of this material for their electrolytic copper and zinc work.

WITH imperfect instruments it is impossible to make accurate surveys; the results are inaccurate maps, with their attendant consequences. The design of the writer is to describe an improved form of tripod head, and certain defects in an English transit and a miners' dial, with the method taken to remedy the defects of the transit. When the present transit superseded the surveyor's compass, there was one special objection brought against it, and with some show of reason ; namely, that the tripod of the compass with its ball and socket motion, allowed a quicker levelling-up (and, consequently, more work) than was possible with the transit. To this objection it was replied, that the ball and socket would not allow the instrument to be levelled with the same degree of precision that could be attained with the levelling screws, and that if time was sacrificed greater accuracy was attained. Nevertheless, it is a well-known fact that in this country, and especially in England, the compass or miners' dial holds its ground solely from its rapid adjustment. Ever since the introduction of the transit, efforts have been made to give to this instrument the same facility of levelling possessed by the compass or dial, and the same means have been tried, i. e., a . ball and socket motion, since a modification of this in some form was the only method that would answer. The upper part of a transit is, however, much heavier than the corresponding parts of a compass, and, therefore, requires more binding power, which cannot be ob¬tained with an ordinary ball and socket joint. It has been a study with instrument-makers to combine the facility of these two tripods -the quickness of the ball and socket with the steadiness and accuracy of the screws; but in all attempts in this direction the ball and socket of the compass has been literally followed, the entire stability of the instrument depending upon the friction of the ball in its socket. There is great need for a tripod that can be more easily manipulated than the present form, for it rarely happens that an engineer has a level surface on which to set his instrument, and very often

WITH a membership in the Institute of 32 years behind him, Chester Alan Fulton became an A.I.M.E. Director last month. In 1937 he served as Chairman of the Industrial Minerals Division. Mr. Fulton was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 18, 1853, and at the age of 22 graduated from the Columbia School of Mines. His first job was as assayer for the Standard Smelting Co., Rapid City, S. D., but he soon left to become shift boss in the cyanide plant of the Peregrina Mining & Milling Co., Guanajuato, Mexico. The model developed by Tuylor for the calculation of Polycrystalline yield strength has been applied to the case of an aggregate hawing a preferred orientation. In general this procedure requires the specification of texture by means of weighting factors applied to specific orientations. The problem to which the model has been applied is that of the yield-strength aniso-tropy of cold-rolled aluminum whose rolling texture was described as a combination of (110)[112] and (311) [112] In this case yield-strength anisotropy is defined by the rutio of yield strength measured at an angle 8 to the rolling direction to that measured along the rolling direction. The method of calculation of yield-strength ratio as a function of ? is described and the results show good agreement with experimental values. The orthotropic yield criterion suggested by Hill has been applied to the results and the strain ratio R also calculated as a function of ?. This has been compared with calculations using the method suggested by Elias, Heyer, and Smith which does not exhibit suck good agreement with observation. one deficietlcy of the method presented is that the strain ratios used by are those applying to iso-Irobic materials. The method should therefore be reg-clrded only as a first abbroximation to the prediction of anisotropy. THE problem of calculating the stress-strain characteristics of polycrystalline aggregates from the properties of single crystals has attracted attention for a number of years. The most important contributions to this study have been those due to: Sachs,' Cox and sopwith,2 Taylor,3 Kochendorfer,4 Batdorf and Budiansky,5 Calnan and Clews,6 Bishop and Hill,7,8 Kocks,9 Budiansky, Hashin, and sanders, 10 Kroner,11 Cyzak, Bow, and payne, 12 Budiansky and Wu,13 and Lin.14 While the earlier work has been largely superseded, recent developments tend to support Taylor's solution" within the restriction imposed by his assumptions. The essential features of Taylor's approach were: 1) the material is rigid-plastic; 2) each grain experiences the same strain components as the aggregate as a whole (the problem was that of uniaxial deformation with principal strain components in the ratio 3) all regions of each grain deform uniformly; 4) work hardening occurs equally on all slip systems. While Bishop and Hill7 have generally validated this approach, there has been some criticism offered. Kocks? as pointed out that since multiple slip must occur the single-crystal data must be determined from orientations arranged such that polyslip takes place. Boas and Hargreaves,15 and others, have shown experimentally that the strain distribution within grains is not uniform, the strains in the vicinity of grain boundaries being less than those in the center of the grains. Both of these criticisms can be largely offset by the suitable choice of single-crystal critical shear stress. However, for the problem analyzed below, the critical shear stress is not directly used and, consequently, these criticisms lose their importance. The more recent contributions have attempted to obtain a more complete analysis by considering an elas-toplastic material and considering interactions between grains of differing orientations. Lin14 has considered the early stages of yielding for a polycrystalline aggregate having specific regions of defined slip plane orientations. On the other hand, Budiansky and Wu13 have allowed for these interactions for randomly disposed grain orientations and have calculated the polycrystalline stress-strain curves for crystals exhibiting either elastic-ideally plastic or kinematic hardening characteristics. This work has shown that yielding commences when the macroscopic stress is 2.2 times the critical shear stress for slip in a single crystal (7,). The yield stress-strain curve then rises becoming asymptotic to a value of 3.072 7,. This is close to the value obtained by Bishop and Hill (3.06) in their confirmation of Taylor's method. This, of course, is to be expected since, at large strain values, the elastic strains are negligible and the rigid-plastic model is satisfactory. The results of Budiansky and Wu indicate that the result obtained by Taylor is 7.7 pct high at a plastic strain which is two times the elastic strain at the initiation of yield. By defining the anisotropy in terms of relative values, the ratio of yield strength at orientation ?, to that measured in the rolling direction, the effect of the discrepancy in Taylor's solution is considered to be of lesser consequence. Therefore, it is anticipated that an analysis based on Taylor's solution, which can be quite straightforward, should provide a reasonable estimation of the anisotropy of materials having a preferred orientation texture. OUTLINE OF TAYLOR'S METHOD In fee metals there are four possible slip planes (the octahedral planes) and in each there are three possible slip directions (the edges of the octahedron), that is a total of twelve possible slip systems. von Mises16 has shown that at least five independent slip systems must become operative in each grain of the polycrystalline aggregate in order to preserve continuity of strain. With this geometrical requirement as basis and the assumptions previously listed, Taylor determined the operative slip systems for a number of orientations of the tensile stress axis specified in the unit stereographic triangle. A dynamic photoelastic analysis of stress waves interacting with a free surface is described. The free surface is that of a bench with a fixed bottom so common in quarry applications. The stress waves are generated by line charges of lead azide (Pb N,). Four models of identical geometry are investigated with the direction of detonation of the line charge varied between the four models. Dynamic photoelastic patterns are recorded and analyzed to indicate which method of detonating the line charge produced the largest magnitude of tension at the free surface. The mechanics of rock breakage by means of explosives has received considerable treatment by many investigators including Duvall, Obert, Broberg, Rinehart, and Langefors1-11 over the past two decades. Indeed in more recent years several texts12-15 have been written on the topic, treating a wide variety of subjects which are logically related to the modern technique of rock blasting. In rock blasting the chemical energy of a concentrated explosive contained in a relatively small diameter borehole is utilized to fragment the rock. The explosive is transformed into a gas with enormous pressures which exceed 10-5 bars18 This high pressure shatters the rock in the area adjacent to the borehole and produces dilatational and distortional stress waves which propagate radially away from the borehole. The state of stress associated with these outgoing waves produces a system of cracks which extend for a few feet from the borehole. The breakage produced in this manner is limited as the dynamic stress in the pulse attenuates markedly with distance. In the absence of a free surface, the stress wave propagates away from the source without further fracture. With a free face of rock near the drill hole, another mode of breakage occurs which is due to scabbing failure of the layer of rock adjacent to the free face. These scabbing failures are produced by the reflection of the incident waves and the conversion of compressive stresses into tensile stresses sufficiently large to fracture the rock. The detailed nature of the interaction of the stress waves with the free surface is complex and difficult to treat analytically. However, dynamic photoelasticity offers an experimental approach which gives a fullfield visual display of propagating stress waves and the reflection process. Applications of static photoelasticity to solution of problems related to mining technology have become relatively common (see, for instance, Refs. 17 and 18) with a plastic model loaded to produce a state of stress representative of that occurring in the workings of a mine. The application of dynamic photoelasticity is ex tremely limited. Tandanand and Hartman19 have used a multiple spark camera to study fracture in glass and plastic plates impacted by a chisel-shaped tool. This paper describes a dynamic photoelastic analysis of stress waves interacting with a free surface. The free surface is that of a bench with a fixed bottom so common in quarry applications. Experimental Procedure The model illustrated in [Fig. 1] was fabricated from a sheet of Columbia Resin CR-39 to represent a bench with a fixed bottom. Properties of the CR-39 pertaining to these dynamic experiments are listed in [Table 1]. Scribe lines on 1-in. centers are used to identify locations along the bench face. The bench height was 8 in., the burden was 3 in., and the overall dimensions of the sheet, 16 and 18 in., were large enough to eliminate reflections from nonessential boundaries during the period of observation of the dynamic event. To simulate a charge in a borehole, a groove 0.062 in. wide and 0.080 in. deep groove was cut into the sheet from one side. The lower end of the groove was 1 in. or 1/3 the burden distance below the bottom of the bench. The upper end of the groove was 3 in. or one times the burden distance below the upper level of the bench. The groove was packed with 60 mg of Pb No per in. of length, and ignited with a bridge wire detonator. Four different ignition procedures were used to examine the effects of detonation direction on the stress wave interaction with the free face of the bench. In Test 1 the line charge was ignited at the top and the line charge detonated downward. In Test 2 the line charge was ignited at the bottom and the charge burned upward. In Test 3 the charge was ignited in the center with the top half burning upward and the bottom half burning downward. Finally in Test 4 the line charge was ignited at both ends simultaneously. Sixteen high-speed photographs of the photoelastic fringe patterns representing the stress wave propagation were recorded for each of the tests. A Cranz-Schardin multiple spark gap camera 20,21 was operated at framing rates which were systematically varied from 110,000 to 250,000 frames per sec during each test.

IN 1947 the author became interested in the fundamental aspects of the desilverizing of lead by zinc, conducted some experimental work, and searched the technical literature for all available fundamental data. Since then a revival of interest in the subject in Europe resulted in the appearance of quite a number of papers. It became evident that it would be more profitable to collect together and examine thoroughly the results of various workers, than to attempt to duplicate the experimental determinations. There are many inconsistencies in the various publications, and it is opportune to review at this time the present status of knowledge on the Ag-Pb-Zn system. There is also a need for a clear description, in fundamental terms, of the various desilverizing procedures. This paper is presented in four sections: 1—There is an historical review of the origins of the Parkes process, of the results of many attempts to find a satisfactory fundamental explanation for the phenomena, and of the modifications proposed to date. 2—A diagram of the Ag-Pb-Zn system is presented. This is believed to be free of obvious inconsistencies or theoretical impossibilities, although thermodynamic analysis subsequently may reveal errors. 3—The fundamental bases of the various desilverizing procedures, which have been used up to the present day, are described; and a new method is suggested for desilverizing a continuous flow of softened bullion in which the bullion is stirred at a low temperature in two stages producing desilverized lead at least as low in silver as that from the Williams continuous process and a crust which, on liquation, yields a very high-silver Ag-Zn alloy. 4—A suggestion is made for the revival of de-golding practice, following a recently published account which does not seem to have attracted the attention it deserves. The terms "eutectic trough" and "peritectic fold" as used in this paper are synonymous with "line of binary eutectic crystallization" and "line of binary peritectic crystallization" as used by Masing.' The German literature on ternary and higher systems is rather extensive and a fairly general system of nomenclature has arisen, whereas in English usage the corresponding terms are not as well established. For this reason the meanings of terms used in this paper, together with the equivalent German terms, are given as follows: 1—Eutectic trough—eutektische rinne: line at which a liquid precipitates two solids S1 and S2 simultaneously. If the composition of a liquid which is cooling reaches this line, it then follows the course of this line until a eutectic point is reached, or until all the liquid is exhausted. The tangent to the eutec-tic trough cuts the line joining S1S2. 2—Peritectic fold—peritektische rinne: line at which a solid S1 and a liquid L transform into another solid S2. If the composition of a liquid which is precipitating S1 reaches the line, on further cooling only S2 is precipitated. The liquid composition moves from one phase region (L + S1) into the other (L + S2), and does not follow the course of the boundary. The tangent to the peritectic fold cuts the line S1S2 produced nearer S,. 3—Liquid miscibility gap, or conjugate solution region—mischungslucke: the region within which two liquid phases coexist in equilibrium over a certain range of temperature. A system whose composition is represented by a point in this region comprises one liquid at high temperature; then as the temperature is progressively reduced, two liquids, one liquid and one solid, one liquid and two solids, and finally three solids. 4—Liquid miscibility gap boundary—begrenzung der flussigen mischungsliicke: the line along which the surface of the miscibility gap dome, considered as a solid model, intersects the surrounding liquidus surfaces. 5—Tie lines—konoden: lines joining points representing the compositions of two liquids, a liquid and a solid, or two solids, in equilibrium. In binary systems the only tie lines customarily drawn are those through invariant points, e.g., through the eutectics of the Pb-Zn and Ag-Pb systems, or the various peritectics of the Ag-Zn system, as in Figs. 1 to 3. In ternary systems it is desirable to draw sufficient tie lines to indicate the slopes of all possible tie lines. 6—Ternary eutectic point—ternares eutektikum: point at which liquid transforms isothermally to three solids, S1, S2, and S Such a point can lie only within the triangle 7—Invariant peritectic (transformation) point— nonvariante peritektische umsetzungspunkt: (a) — On the miscibility gap boundary, the point at which two liquids and two solids react isothermally so that L, + S, + L, + S2. (b)—On the eutectic trough, the point at which a liquid and three solids react iso-thermally so that L + S, + S2 + S3. Such a point must lie on that side of the line joining S,S which is further from S,. (c)—A further possibility, not found in this ternary system, is that the point is at the intersection of two peritectic folds when the reaction concerned is L + S, + S, + S Historical Introduction Karsten discovered in 1842 that silver and gold may be separated from lead by the addition of zinc.2 Ten years later Parkes used this fact to develop the well known desilverizing process which bears his

A meeting of the New York Local Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, in joint session with the American Electrochemical Society, was held at the Engineering Societies Building, 29 West 39th Street, New York City, Nov. 20, 1913. Mr. Lawrence Addicks, Chairman of the American Electrochemical Society, presided at the meeting, in conjunction with Mr. Louis D. Huntoon, Chairman of the New York Local Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The Chairman announced the subject to be discussed it the meeting as follows: As this is a joint meeting of the New York Sections of the Electro-chemical Society and the Institute, Mr. Huntoon has insisted that I share the responsibilities of the chair to the extent of introducing the speakers.

Asbestos ranks among the leading minerals produced in Canada. It is also mined in Russia, Rhodesia, South Africa, Cyprus, Italy, the U.S.A., Japan, China and several other countries. The most abundant variety, chrysotile, and also the most valuable form of asbestos produced, makes up 90% of the world's supply. In Canada, chrysotile is found in the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, Newfoundland as well as in Quebec, the latter accounting for almost 90% of all the fibre produced in this country. A number of developments emerging this year could make 1968 a record production and export year for Canada's asbestos mining industry. Asbestos fibre consumption in increasing in the U.S., Canada, up 10% to date this year, Japan and in Latin America. Demand in Western Europe is again on the upswing, following a cut-back last year. As a result, shipments from Canadian mines for the first eight months of this year reached some 916,968 tons versus 873,402 in 1967, an increase of 43,566 tons or 5%. Indications are that Canadian asbestos production will for the first time ever top 1.5 million tons in 1968.

In the summer of 1917 it was decided to fireproof the main tramway hoisting shaft of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Butte, Mont. The shaft has three hoisting compartments and one pump compartment; it is timbered with 12 by 12-in. (30.5 by 30.5-cm.) fir timber, and is 2475 ft. (754 m.) deep. Subsidence and displacement of the surrounding country rock had produced exceedingly heavy ground, and had carried the shaft out of line, in several places, by as much as 2 ft. (0.6 m.) displacement. Constant repairing and realigning of the timbers had been necessary in order to maintain clearance for the cages. The most feasible method of fireproofing, therefore, seemed to be to cover the timbers with a coat of concrete applied with the cement gun. The cement gun, which is operated by compressed air at ordinary mine pressures, feeds a mixture of sand and cement through a hose to a nozzle having a water connection. The mortar in fluid form is thus sprayed upon the prepared surface in thin layers, which can be built up to any desired thickness. The cement gun can be set up at any convenient point; satisfactory results have been obtained with the nozzle a distance of 500 ft. (152 m.) from the gun. The shaft was thoroughly overhauled and the timbers put in the best possible state of repair. Between the 1000 and the 1400 levels, much loose ground lay against the shaft timbers on the north side; this was breast-boarded back and a 30-in. (76-cm.) reinforced-concrete retaining wall was erected, leaving a space of 12 in. (30.5 cm.) outside the shaft timbers to allow for future movements of the ground. For convenience in handling men and materials; it was arranged to concrete the auxiliary hoisting-cage compartment and the pump compartment first, using the cages of the main hoist to serve the cementing crews. The auxiliary cage was then available while the remainder of the shaft was being concreted.

The constitution of the La-Rh system was studied by powder X-ray diffraction, metallopaphic, and differential thermal analysis techniques and an equilibrium diagram is presented. Eleven intermediate phases occur in the system and the crystal structural data for nine of them were determined. La3Rh crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure of undetermined type, whose unit cell is obtained by doubling the 'a; and 'c,,' edges of an FesC type unit cell. The other intermediate phases of the system are LarRh-3( undetermined structures also occur in the system. LaRh, undergoes a polymorphic phase transformation at 1240°C. LaRh3 and La2Rh7 also exhibit polymorphisnz. The phases Laah and LazRh7 melt congruently. The latter undergoes a eutectoid transformation into LaRh, and Rh at 1205°C. Laah3 is formed by a peritectoid reaction between Laah and La,Rh,,. The other Phases result from peritectic reactions between the liquid and the adjacent rhodium-rich phases. The intermediate Phases of the La-Rh system are compared with those of the La-Co and La-Ni systems. DURING the course of a detailed investigation to study the occurrence of CrB, FeB, A1B2, and related structures in the rare earth alloys it was found that much information is lacking for the rare earth noble metal systems. Although the structures of several rare earth alloys containing the noble metals at the AB and AB2 stoichiometries have been reported, the occurrence of related structures at other stoichiometries has not been studied. We have initiated a project to study the crystal structural features of selected rare earth-rhodium alloys and to map the equilibrium diagrams of representative systems with conventional methods. The results of our investigation in the La-Rh system are presented in this paper. Two phases were known in the La-Rh system. LaRh has the CrB-type structure.' LaRhz is a MgCu2-type Laves phase.z EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys weighing less than 1 g were prepared from commercially pure lanthanum (99.9 pct +), supplied by Lunex Company, Pleasant Valley, Iowa, and rhodium (99.92 pct +), supplied by Engelhardt Industries, Newark, N.J., in a conventional arc melting furnace under argon atmosphere. The buttons were turned upside down and remelted three times to insure homogeneity in the samples. Since negligible loss of material was encountered during melting, a chemical analysis of the alloy buttons was not undertaken. Powder specimens for X-ray diffraction studies in the as cast state were then prepared. The buttons were wrapped in thin molybdenum foils and homogenized by heating in vacuum at suitable high temperatures for more than 1 week. They were then broken into three or four pieces for annealing experiments. The pieces were wrapped in molybdenum foils and annealed at various temperatures in evacuated quartz capsules. The annealing was carried out for 2 hr at or above 1200°C, 1 day at temperatures close to llOO°C, 2 days at 1000°C, and for 1 week at temperatures below 1000°C. After annealing the alloy pieces were again broken and powder specimens for X-ray diffraction were prepared. The powders of the lanthanum rich alloys with more than 80 at. pct La were prepared by filing. The filings were sealed in molybdenum tubings and stress-relieved at 600°C in vacuum. It was not deemed necessary to stress-relieve the powders of the other alloys, since the alloys were very brittle and were ground easily. POWDER X-RAY DIFFRACTION X-ray diffraction photographs of powders (-325 mesh size) of the alloys in the as cast and annealed states were prepared in a Guinier-de Wolff focussing camera with copper K, X radiations. These patterns were studied to identify the stoichiometries and the crystal structures of the intermediate phases. The lattice parameters of the phases were calculated after minimizing the differences between the observed sin2 6 values, calculated from the diffraction angles 8, and the sin2 8 values, calculated using approximate lattice constants obtained from a few lines. These differences were minimized manually to less than 0.0005. The latLice constants are judged to be accurate to *0.005A for values less thp about 10A and to k0.01~ for values greater than 10A. The relative intensities of the lines were calculated using a computer program written by Jeitschko and Parthk.~ No attempt was made to refine the atomic positional parameters in the phases. METALLOGRAPHY The phase equilibria in the investigated alloys in the as cast and annealed states were also studied by metallographic examination. The polished specimen surfaces were etched with 10 pct picric acid in alcohol (alloys up to 25 pct Rh), concentrated picric acid (from 25 to 37.5 pct Rh), 2 pct nital (40 to 50 pct Rh), 10 pct nital (from 50 to 66.7 pct Rh) and with concentrated 48 pct HF for the other rhodium-rich alloys. DeLamar, the largest silver mine in the United States outside the Coeur d’Alene District in Idaho, came into production in April 1977. It is a joint venture of Earth Resources Company and Canadian Superior Oil Co., with Earth Resources being the operator. The property is a consolidation of several old operations dating back to the 1800s; the better known of these are the DeLamar and Sommer-camp mines. DeLamar is situated in southwestern Idaho near the Oregon border in the Owyhee Mountains, 88 km (55 miles) southwest of Boise, Idaho. Heavy snowfalls and very low temperatures are common in the wintertime. Planned production was 77,500 kg (2.5, million oz) of silver and 5 13 kg (16,500 oz) of gold per year. Expected life at a milling rate of 1,540 mtpd (1,700 stpd) was 20 years, with an ore grade of 144 g Ag and 1.58 g Au per mt (4.2 oz Ag and 0.046 oz Au per st). Present production is at the rate of 1,900 mtpd (2,100 .stpd). The total cost to bring the mine into production was reported to be approximately $22 million, and the mill was reported to have cost about $10,000 per daily ton of design capacity. At DeLamar, naurnanite (Ag2Se) is the principal silver .mineral occurring with acanthite (Ag2S) disseminated through quartz veins and a silicified rhyolitic ash-flow tuff of Miocene age. The mineralization is relatively iron and manganese free and is readily amenable to cyanidation giving recoveries of 85% silver and 92% gold, which occurs free. When the plant was started, considerable difficulties were encountered in handling the wet sticky ore because of the high clay content. Following primary crushing, the ore is stockpiled. Due to the sticky nature of the ore, the vibrating feeders initially installed under the stockpile were replaced by a reclaim hopper and an apron feeder which was fed 24 hours a day by a front-end loader. The minus 200 mm (8 in.) ore is fed to a 5.5 m by 2.75 m (18 ft by 9 ft) autogenous mill followed by a 2.75 m by 4.57 m (9 ft by 15 ft) ball mill and cyclones. The mills are equipped with 750 kw and 520 kw (1,000 hp and 700 hp) motors. Both mills discharge to the same cyclone feed sump and a portion of the cyclone underflow is returned to the autogenous mill. SINCE it was introduced in 1943 to recover chromite from Oregon beach sands, the Humphreys spiral concentrator has proved successful in several fields of wet mineral beneficiation. By the end of 1957, 9390 Humphreys spirals had been manufactured. Most of these are still in service. The spiral does not offer a panacea for all mineral dressing problems. Its proper application can best be determined by test work. Spirals present a unique advantage for the metallurgist to make tests in a full-size machine rather than a miniature model, without the risk involved in scaling up results. With only 10 to 40 lb of sample, the operator of a closed circuit test unit employing a full-size Humphreys spiral can conduct preliminary tests with full-scale loadings of 0.5 to 2.5 tph. With larger samples, from 300 to 500 lb, he can run longer multi-stage tests to obtain reliable data for the next step-pilot plant design. The manufacturer of the Humphreys spiral concentrator maintains a fully equipped ore dressing laboratory and by insisting on test work prior to sales has largely prevented misapplication of the spiral.

Stimulated by the hearing protection clauses in the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Law, attempts were made to determine what safety hazards, in terms of warning signal discrimination, are attendant upon the wearing of hearing protectors. Warning signals of dangerous roof conditions were collected and analyzed from 11 different coal mines in four different coal seams. Primarily, signals of audible level emanating from roof, floor, or coal were recorded. The interpretations of these signals were seen to be very dependent upon coincident visual and tactile signals. Acoustic character of such signals is shown to be dependent upon the spectral energy distribution of the pulses. Roof talk signals generally have broad-band spectra concentrated below 5 kHz. Reverberation times of acoustic pulses are generally less than 0.5 sec in duration. Indications have developed which link the coal mine entry dimensions with the nature of noises recorded there. Related experiments suggest that roof talk can be discriminated from background noise equally well when wearing protection as when not. This conclusion is only appropriate when noise levels warrant the wearing of protection. When quiet, the wearing of protection somewhat reduces discriminatory ability.

The performance of the nine 5.5 m diameter x 6.4 m mills (18 x 21 ft) initially installed at Bougainville Copper Ltd. did not meet the laboratory and pilot plant derived design expectations as measured by Bond Work Index. During the post-commissioning period, inefficient grinding of coarse material resulted in a build-up of large circulating loads and led to reduced throughputs because of pump and cyclone overloading. Installation of larger pumps and cyclones and development of an improved circuit control philosophy alleviated materials handling problems and permitted higher tonnages to be attained. Since 1977, plant throughput has been increased by installation of three additional mills. These are 0.9 m (2.9 ft) longer than the other nine and have a higher capacity. Developments in classification and mill speed-up, together with a finer ball mill feed size and substantial improvements to mill availability (99% in 1982) have further increased plant capacity. There is a continuing emphasis on improving grinding circuit efficiency in terms of throughput/grind. Current development work includes trials of graded ball charges, different liner profiles, and assessment of scalping/regrind proposals.

Mines are interesting by reason of what they have done for man, or of what has been done for them by nature. Not all are interesting on both scores. Many profitable mines are commonplace to the geologist; and many presenting unique gcological conditions have been sad failures commercially. The Standard group at Bodie has produced in 25 years, $14,500,000, paying $5,000,000 in dividends.' On the other hand, this output has beeu mined (almost wholly above the 1,000-ft. level) from a system of more than 100 veins, ranging in thickness from 0.5 in. of ('specimen rock" to 30 ft, of clay and quartz; distributed through a zone about 2,000 ft, in width, and representing from three to five distinct periods of formation. This group, therefore, by reason of its industrial record as well as its geological features, may fairly be regarded as doubly interesting. With a mine output as high as 5000 tpd and mill capacity of 7000 tpd, the uranium mining and milling complex owned and operated by Kerr-McGee Nuclear Corp. in the Ambrosia Lake area is the largest in the U.S. and is likely to remain so for some time. Next year, Kerr- McGee expects to have in production another mine in Section 19 of the Ambrosia area-and will begin ore production in 1976 at its new $15-million mine at Church Rock, located northeast of Gallup, N. M., where the company has already completed the shaft work and is in the early stages of project development. Ore from Church Rock will be transported to the company's facilities at Ambrosia Lake for processing. Kerr-McGee's existing eight mines in Ambrosia Lake go to depths of about 800 to 1500 ft to tap the various horizons of uranium-bearing sands in the Westwater Canyon of the Morrison formation.

Fractions of glass particles in the size range 0.5 to 5.0 were prepared by an elutriator that operates in a centrifugal field. Although mean sizes of commercially graded abrasive powders were ten times greater than those of samples prepared by the elutriator, frequency size plots for elutriator samples compared favorably. Efficiency of separation was low and amounts of material recovered by the elutriator were small, but the method should find use in preparation of small amounts of sized materials for laboratory investigations.
