Samples of iron containing nitrogen or carbon have been given treatments similar to those used in cold-work peak (CWP) measurements and examined by transmission electron microscopy. It was observed that the unusual and nonreproducible behavior of the carbon CWP can be explained by a strong tendency for carbon to form grain boundary precipitates at temperatures below those used for CWP measurements. These precipitates dissolved at the temperatures used in the CWP measurements. There was no evidence for nitrogen precipitation at grain boundaries. There was no indication of precipitation along dislocations in either carburized or nitrided samples given treatments similar to those of CWP measurements. Although it is possible that subelectron-microscopic clustering had occurred, this observation supports the theories of the CWP that are based on continuous atmospheres rather than on individual precipitates. In an earlier paper,' the present authors developed a new distribution function to predict the occupation of sites for interstitial impurity atoms around a dislocation. When this distribution was applied to the case of carbon and nitrogen in iron, it predicted that, if the temperature dependence of the concentration of solute atoms in the matrix was controlled by the presence of equilibrium carbide or nitride precipitates, the tendency for nitrogen to segregate to dislocations would be greater than that for carbon even though their binding energies to dislocations are identical. The cold-work internal-friction peak (CWP) is considered by most authors to be produced by the interaction of interstitial impurities with dislocations. Many investigators have studied the CWP in iron containing carbon and nitrogen and have observed a significant difference between its behavior in the two cases. In this paper a series of experiments will be reported that were initiated to determine whether the application of the new distribution function would explain the observed differences between the carbon and nitrogen CWP. Although it was found that the distribution function, pev se, did not explain the differences, the differences became clear, and some insight into the mechanism of the CWP was realized. Before reporting the present experiments, the literature pertaining to the differences between the carbon and nitrogen CWP in iron and the various mechanisms proposed for the CWP will be reviewed. LITERATURE REVIEW Snoek2 first observed the CWP in iron specimens containing nitrogen, but also reported a weak and unreliable peak in carburized samples. Later, Ke3 established that the CWP height was proportional to the degree of deformation. The presence of nitrogen alone would produce a peak of the same size as found in a sample containing both nitrogen and carbon, and KG concluded that the CWP was caused by nitrogen. In a discussion of G's paper it was reported that Dijkstra had investigated the CWP in samples that contained only carbon. He found it to be much smaller than the nitrogen peak and "unstable". KG et al.4 charged specimens of iron with both carbon and nitrogen. They observed that the carbon CWP was much smaller than that observed in nitrided samples, but that aging at 300°C caused the carbon peak to increase. A similar treatment produced no change in a nitrogen peak. Annealing at higher temperatures caused the height of the CWP in both the nitrogen and carbon samples to decrease. This behavior was also observed by Kamber et al. 5 who found that the activation energy for the annealing of the CWP was identical with the activation energy for the self-diffusion of iron. They concluded that the annihilation of dislocations by climb caused the reduction in the CWP height. Kamber et al. studied the "unstable" carbon peak in detail. They measured both the Snoek and CWP during various aging treatments. In carburized samples, aging at 100°C caused the Snoek peak to disappear, although the CWP peak remained small. However, a subsequent treatment for 5 hr at 240°C caused the CWP to reach a maximum. They proposed that an additional location for the carbon, other than whatever site produced the CWP, is present. In nitrided samples the CWP was completely developed as soon as a measurement was made; additional sites are not present. No explanation of either the additional site or the difference in the behavior of carbon and nitrogen was offered. petarra5 performed a systematic study of the effect of composition on the CWP. Using three kinds of "pure" iron, he showed that there was a residual CWP when the carbon and nitrogen concentrations had been reduced to less than that detectable by Snoek-peak measurements. He observed the same general annealing behavior and composition dependence as previous investigators, with the following exceptions. On first measuring the carbon CWP, it was found to be identical with the residual peak, and essentially independent of the carbon content. If the CWP was measured a second time in the same sample, it increased in size, but was still only about one-fourth the size of a CWP in a sample of the same iron nitrided to the same composition. The latent hardening of silver and an Ag-Au alloy was investigated by lateral compression, overshoot in tension and cormpression, and the stability of multiple-slib orientations. The latent hardening of a secondary slip systenz depends on its relation to the primary slip system. For most secondary slip systems the latent hardening is larger for Ag-10 at. pct Au than for pure silver. The maximum increase in. flow stress on a secondary slip system over that of the primary slip system was 40 pct. The work hardening during the lateral-compression test on the latent system after prestress on the primary system is iuterbreted in terms of the preferential distribution of barriers to dislocation movement with respect to the active slip system in work-lzardened fcc crystals. The work-hardening in fcc crystals is mainly due to the dislocation interactions and the barriers to dislocation movement formed as a result of reactions between dislocations of different slip systems. The operation of sources on the latent system depends on the flow stress of those systems; hence, the increase in flow stress of a latent system due to glide on an active system, which is called latent hardening, is an important element in understanding the phenomenon of work hardening. The problem of latent hardening has attracted the attention of many investigators in the past. For example, a theoretical study of the elastic latent hardening of the latent systems due to glide on an operative system has been made by Haasen' and ~troh. These calculations, however, neglect the stress required for the intersection of forest dislocations by the glide dislocations, a factor which would be important for producing macroscopic strains on the secondary slip systems. The importance of this factor will become evident from the results presented here. Attempts have also been made to determine the latent hardening of different slip systems by experimental means by the methods summarized in Table I.3-9 The experimental methods used have been subject to certain limitations. For instance, in the method used by Hauser,9 frictional constraints between the specimen and the compression platen were not eliminated by proper lubrication (see Hos- ford10). Secondly, with the exception of Kocks,6 Hauser,9 and Rohm and Kochendorfer,11 latent-hardening studies have been made on only one of the slip systems, i.e., on either the conjugate or the coplanar slip system; hence, extensive results are not available on the latent hardening of different slip systems in the same materials, with the exception of aluminum.6 It was therefore decided to study the latent hardening of the conjugate, critical and half-related slip systems in silver. Similar experiments were done in Ag-10 at. pct Au to study the effect of solute (gold) on the latent hardening of silver. Lastly, indirect evidence can be obtained by a study of the orientation stability of crystals of multiple-slip orientations in tension and compression. This method has been used by Kocks6 to supplement his studies of latent hardening in aluminum. Similar studies were made at room temperature in single crystals of silver. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The single crystals of the desired orientations were grown and the tensile test specimens were prepared as described in Ref. 12. The compression tests were made on 1/4-in.-cube specimens. The specimens were cut from single crystals, in the Servomet spark-erosion machine.13 The two cut surfaces were planed using the lowest available planing rate in the machine to minimize the deformation layer. A brass strip was used as the planing tool. This method of preparation ensured plane parallel faces for the compression tests. The deformed material was removed by prolonged etching in a weak etching solution. A weak etching solution was used to prevent pitting of the surfaces and to ensure uniform etching. About 25 to 50 µ of material were removed from all faces by the etching treatment. The specimens were then annealed for 24 hr at 940°C in oxygen-free helium and cooled in the furnace to room temperature over a period of 7 hr. After annealing, the orientation of the specimens was determined by Laue back-reflection technique to make sure that no recrystallization had occurred on annealing. The compression-test technique and setup are described in Ref. 14. The Laue back-reflection technique was used to study the overshoot in tension, the overshoot in compression, and the stability of the axial orientation in tension and compression. The tests were interrupted after every few percent strain to determine the axial orientation. In investigating the overshoot in compression, the operative system was determined by studying the asterism of the Laue spots.

Electromigration has been measured in dilute liquid alloys of lead in antimony and antimony in lead. In these alloys antimony migrates with the electron current; lead migrates in the opposite direction. These results, which contradict the mass criterion, were predicted by the electron drag model for electromigration in liquid alloys. The existing experimental data are shown to correlate with the difference in electrical resistivities of the alloy components. FOR many years investigators have attempted to relate observed electromigration phenomena in liquid alloys to the physical properties of the alloy components. The most successful correlation was found by Angus et' al.,1 who in 1959 proposed an empirical criterion for predicting the relative direction of motion of the components of a liquid alloy in an electric field: the component with the smallest atomic mass concentrates at the cathode. While this criterion is obeyed in nearly all the alloy systems which had been investigated, the physical basis for such an effect was not understood. It was also disturbing that the mass criterion predicted the wrong sign for the Haeffner effect; observations with pure liquid metals revealed that in every instance the lighter isotope was transported to the anode.2 Klemm3 explained these isotopic separations by suggesting that the lighter isotopes were more mobile and more easily carried to the anode with the electron stream. Additionally, several deviations from the mass criterion have been found in liquid alloys, notably involving transition metals such as chromium, nickel, palladium, and zirconium, which migrate to the anode in liquid bismuth.4'5 Recently, a model has been proposed6 in which electromigration in liquid alloys is attributed primarily to the interaction between the electron stream and the metal ions. In essence, this model predicts that the component with the greater electron-ion scattering cross section will be preferentially transported to the anode, displacing the other component to the cathode. The electrical resistivity of each pure component at its melting point is taken as the measure of its scattering cross section. This model was developed from the results of systematic studies with various solutes in liquid mercury,7'8 bismuth,9 and sodium.10 In every alloy, the component with the greater resistivity has centrates at the anode. Coincidentally, in every instance the component with the greater resistivity has also the greater mass, apparently satisfying the mass criterion. In order to differentiate between electron-ion coupling and atomic mass as the relevant physical prop- erty influencing electromigration, measurements were made with Pb-Sb alloys. Lead has an atomic mass nearly twice that of antimony, but lead has an electrical resistivity of 91 microhm-cm while antimony has a value of 113.5 microhm-cm at their respective melting points. The mass criterion predicts that in an alloy of the two antimony will concentrate at the cathode; the electron drag model predicts that antimony will concentrate at the anode. EXPERIMENTAL To conclusively determine the relative motion of lead and antimony in each other, solute electromigration was measured in dilute liquid alloys of antimony in lead and lead in antimony. Both starting materials were 99.999+ pct pure. The measurements were made with the same capillary-reservoir technique previously used for measuring electromigration in liquid bismuth alloys.11 Several changes in the experimental apparatus were necessary, however, to accommodate liquid antimony, which has a higher melting point than bismuth. The modified apparatus is depicted in Fig. 1. In each experiment four quartz capillaries were filled with the molten alloy. A direct current was passed through two of the capillaries; the electrode in one of these capillaries was made the cathode, and the electrode in the other was made the anode. In the spring of 1943, when it was evident that the Tensleep bandstone in the Elk Basin Field, Wyoming and Montana, held a large reserve of petroleum, Bureau of Mines engineers obtained samples of oil from the bottom of nine wells and analyzed them for such physical characteristics as the volumes. of gas in solution. saturation pressures or bubble points, shrinkage in volume caused by the release of gas from solution, expansion of the oil with decrease in pressure, and other related properties. The composition of the gas in solution in the oil was studied. The pressures and temperatures existing in the reservoir and the productivity characteristics of the oil wells were determined. The data obtained indicate that the oil in the Tensleep Reservoir of the Elk Basin Field has unusually varying physiral characteristics, such as a saturation pressure of 1,250 psia and 490 cu ft of gas in solultion in a barrel of oil at the crest of the structure and a saturation pressure of 530 psia and 134 cu ft of gas in solution in a barrel of oil low on the flanks. The hydrogen sulfide content of the gas in solution in the oil varies from 18 per cent for oil on the crest to 5 per cent for oil low on the flanks of the structure. Of even greater significance is the fact that these and other variable characteristics of the reservoir oil are related to the position of the oil in the structure. Many geologists and petroleum engineers have considered that all the oil in a petroleum reservoir has rather uniform physical characteristics and that equilibrium conditions prevailed in all underground accumulations of oil and gas; that such is not always so is borne out by the results of the study by the writers. INTRODUCTION The Rocky Mountain region is one in which may be found striking examples of the unusual in oil and gas accumulations, as is evident from the following: The high helium content (7.6 per cent) of the gas in the Ouray-Leadville limestone sequence in the Rattlesnake Field, New Mexico, and gases of similar helium content in other fields; 50" to 55' API gravity distillate in solution in carbon dioxide gas and recoverable through retrograde condensation, in the North McCallum Field, Colorado; the occurrence of gas, oil, or both in closely related structures contrary to the usual concepts of gravimetric segregation: the accumulation of gas and/or oil in structures closely related to other structures that apparently are more favorable but do not contain oil or gas accumulations; the high hydrogen sulfide content (as high as 42 per cent) of the gas associated with oil in some fields in the Big Horn Basin, Wyoming; and the wide range of fluid chararteristics found in the Elk Basin reservoir. Elk Basin, an interesting old oil field that has been producing oil from the Frontier formation since 1915, is situated in a highly eroded basin resulting from the erosion of the crest of an anticline and some of the underlying softer shales. The field came back into national prominence during 1943 when it became known that it was the largest single reserve of new oil discovered in the United States that year. The Tensleep sandstone was found to contain oil in November. 1942, when a well drilled to a depth of 4,538 ft (44 ft into the Tensleep sandstone) flowed oil at the rate of 2,500 B/D. By the end of 1949, 137 oil-producing wells and five dry holes had been drilled, and approximately 32 million bbl of oil had been produced. Approximately 6,000 acres may be considered productive of oil in the Tensleep Reservoir, and estimates of the oil that will be produced average 200 million bbl. The Tensleep Reservoir has further interest because it ha-greater closure than any oil field in the Rocky Mountain region; the closure of the Elk Basin anticline is variously estimated at 5.000 to 10,000 ft. of which the top 2.00 ft of the structure contained oil. SUBSURFACE OIL SAMPLING Fig. 1 is a structural map of the Elk Basin Tensleep Reservoir, on which the nine wells used in this study and the numbers correvponding to the well designations hereafter referred to are shown. Wells 1. 2, 3, 4, and 8 were tested and sampled during October and November. 1943. and Wells 5, 6. 7, and 9 during June and July, 1944. An electromagnetic type sampler developed by the Bureau of Mines and described by Grandone and Cook' was used in obtaining the subsurface oil samples. As the wells were tubed nearly to bottom, the sampler was run as far as possible in the tubing hut never below the top perforations. Since 1915, when Elk Basin field was brought in, eight oil fields have been developed in Montana and the production has arisen from 50,000 bbl. in 1916 to 8,000,000 bbl. in 1926. The production for 1927 was 5,121,600 bbl. and the total up to the end of 1927 was 27,138,239 barrels. The eight fields, with their year of discovery are: Elk Basin, Carbon County (1915); Devil's Basin, Petroleum County (1919); Cat Creek, Petroleum County (1920); Soap Creek, Big Horn County (1921); Kevin-Sunburst, Toole County (1922); Lake Basin, Stillwater County (1924); Pondera, Pondera and Teton counties (1927); and Bannatyne, Pondera and Teton counties (1927). About 170 wildcat wells have been drilled in the state of which 8 were successful and 162 gas wells or dry. Hence, only one out of 21, or 5 per cent. of the wildcats have been successful. The average depth of the wells has been 1600 ft. and the average cost $32,000 apiece. • Up to Jan. 1, 1927, a total of 1376 wells have been drilled in the producing oil and gas fields of the state, of which 904, or 66 per cent., were successful oil wells; 82, or 6 per cent. were gas; and 390, or 28 per cent, were dry. The percentage of dry wells is excessive as compared to the wells in other states, due to the uncertainties of limestone reservoir rocks. The total production of oil to Jan. 1, 1927, has been 22,016,639 bbl. and of gas 7,265,330,000 cu. ft. The average price at the well for the oil has been $1.47 per bbl. and for gas about 4 c. per 1000 cu. ft. The value at the point of consumption has been about 23 c. per 1000 cu. ft. The total revenue derived from crude oil has been $32,277,119, and from gas 8350,613, or a total income to the producer of $32,727,832. Each well drilled in the state has already (to Jan. 1, 1927) averaged a return of over $21,000. The total number of domestic (Montana) oil and gas companies organized, since the first in 1885, has been 844, of which 702 are still alive and 142 dead. Oil and gas companies registered for operation within the state to Jan. 1, 1927, but with outside charters, are 143, of which 66 are alive and 77 are dead. Lignite Development in North Dakota is a "shotgun wedding" according to former state senator Robert L. Stroup-the unwilling groom (North Dakota) is being led to the altar by the nation's demand for increased coal production. The state's attorney general, Allen I. Olson, reacts to the situation this way: "We have no specific coal policy. We plan to keep the whole matter down to a dull roar and drag our feet until we see how we fit into the national energy picture." But despite a state administration labeled as "cautiously negative" toward resource development, North Dakota has experienced a twofold increase in annual lignite production within the last two years. And within the next four years, three more mine additions will double the state's output again.

Some explanation of methods of testing will be given before presenting the record of a series of physical tests of aluminum, other metals and alloys. I. The Methods Employed and Meaning of Diagrams. The test-bars used, 12 inches long and 4 inch square, are cast in green sand, with chills bedded in such a way that the ends of the bar run against them. By splitting the ends of the bar the depth of chill can be measured. The chills being held in the mould 121/8 inches apart, the space between the end of the bar and the face of the chill, after both are alike cold, is the amount of shrinkage, and is recorded in thousandths of an inch per foot.

Characteristics of surface deformations i.e., sub¬sidence, inclination, curvature and horizontal strains, are evaluated, based on information obtained by direct field measurements over three longwall panels in the Northern Appalachian Coalfield. Surface deformations have been precomputed using Bals' and Knothe's theories. The results have been compared with Bureau of Mines field data to evaluate the applicability of the two theories to the U.S. min¬ing conditions. Measured horizontal movements and the resulting horizontal strains differ as much as 300 percent from precomputed values. Topography has no detectable effect on vertical movements but appears to have substantial effect on the development of horizontal strains. The horizontal deformations computed from our field measurements generally exceed the limits used in other countries to protect surface structures.

This chapter presents a survey of instrumentation and control systems used on ball mill circuits from the past to the present. It is based on the concept of optimization of plant practice, and addresses the influence of the circuit design on the control strategy and on the instrumentation philosophy. Methods of optimization of the grinding circuit, within the constraints of the mill design requirements, are reviewed. The modern use of automation and circuit optimization is critically reviewed for known and possible conceptual control loops. A comparative study of circuit variations due to instrument hardware, location and installation is provided. Future trends i.e., computer control (DDC) and the effects on both the control stratagems and the optimization stratagems are described.

For many years the Metals Research Laboratory of Carnegie Institute of Technology has been concerned with the statistical nature of the engineering properties of steel from an experimental viewpoint, particularly those properties representing ductility.' In the past three years new work has been directed toward evaluating the statistical nature of the endurance properties. It has been shown that both the fracture curve and the endurance limit in fatigue are markedly statistical in nature. The S-N curve (and the endurance limit) of ferrous materials is often determined with specimens which number as few as ten. The common procedure is to test the first specimen at a stress well above the expected endurance hmit. Each succeeding specimen is then tested at a progressively lower stress, until, after five or six tests, a specimen runs ten million or so cycles without failing. Two or three more specimens are then used to find the highest stress at which failure will not occur; the limiting stress determined in this way is called the endurance limit. It has now been found, however, that the variability in the fracture curve and in the endurance limit in heat-treated alloy forging steels is so great that S-N curves must be drawn on the basis of distribution curves which can be appraised only by statistical methods. Two methods have been adopted in this study: (1) straightforward statistical studies of cycles to fracture of a number of specimens at each of a series of stress levels, and (2) a new abbreviated statistical method, known as "staircase testing."2 The latter corisists in testing a series of specimens, one by one, with the test stress for any given specimen automatically

The recovery of gold and silver from their ores by means of the cyanide process has been so successful in the last few years that ally radical improvement would seem impossible; yet the appliance to which I wish to call attention in this paper is really a radical departure from the methods now in general use. The most modern and approved of these, known as the all-slimillg method, depends for its success on the grinding of the ore so fine that practically 90 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen. Burrell and Gauger is of special interest to me as, through the courtesy of the management, I had an opportunity of visiting the Portland mine, Cripple Creek, in 1911, in connection with the investigations on acclimatization to high altitudes, carried out on Pike's Peak, near Cripple Creek, by Professors Yandell, Henderson and Schneider, Dr. Douglas and myself.1 The analyses of one or two samples of the vitiated air were entirely confirmatory of those of the authors. A fatal accident owing to two men being lowered down a shaft filled with the gas had occurred in a neighboring mine just before our visit.

The techniques of testing the physical properties of green pellets produced in a batch balling test are described. It has been found that these physical properties, i.e. drop resistance, wet compressive strength, and plastic deformation under load, are generally related to the moisture content of the wet balls. A "criterion" method of analyzing data from a series of batch tests is discussed. This method facilitates the comparison of results of various test series. A time-sharing computer program, which correlates the test data from a batch series, generates the "criterion" values for subsequent comparison and analysis, and produces X, Y plots of the various moisture-strength relationships, is presented. Examples of computer output and use of the "criterion" evaluation method are given.

Prior to World War I, zinc was universally made by the distillation process. Small plants were operated at Cockle Creek, N.S.W., and Port Pirie, S.A. Then the electrolytic process was developed at Great Falls, Mont., in 1915 and at Trail. B.C. encouraging the Broken Hill companies to investigate the process. England's war-time need for zinc gave impetus to the development, and the site at Risdon, Tasmania, coincided with the developing hydro-electric power there. Experimental work was begun in 1917 by a proprietary company formed and owned by Broken Hill interests. Then in 1920, the principal features of the process having been established, a public company. Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd. was formed, now known as E.Z. Industries Ltd.

LEROY SALSICH has had 37 consecutive years of operating and executive experience in the Lake Superior iron region during 35 of which he has been a member of the A.I.M.E. His recent election as an institute Director to represent the iron and copper country therefore brings to the Board a man long known throughout the area that he represents and well acquainted with the history of the Institute. Mr. Salsich is a native of the area in which his professional life has been spent, having been horn at Hartland. Wis., and graduating from the state university's college of engineering in 1901. A call had come to the college from the Lake Superior Consolidated Iron Mines, at Duluth.
