(communication to the Secretary *) :-Mr. Hibbard's definition of steel would be the best yet offered were it not for its one defect, the vagueness or equivocalness of "fusion-process." Puddling is surely in one sense a fusion-process, and so are the charcoal-hearth or knobbling-processes. But what he says suggests the following definition, which seems to me a good one: " Steel: any variety of iron which is usefully malleable at least at some one temperature, and is either cast when molten into a malleable mass, or if not so cast can be much hardened by sudden cooling." It is not necessary in a definition that quantitative bounds should be set up, for instance, that the exact height at which dwarf apple-trees cease and standards begin, or at which hills cease and mountains begin, should be stated. These quantitative measures are proper for specifications and contracts, but are not necessary for purposes such as the present. HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J. K. Baumgarten has returned from active service in France. He reports that he saw C. W. Campbell, formerly with the 2d Engineers on the Chateau Thierry front, and believes that the latter returned to the United States on August 1. He also saw J. J. Croston; G. J. Sielaff, recently transferred to the Gas Service; Thomas M. Smither, survivor of the Tuscania after a 10-mile swim to Ireland. While in Paris he en-deavored to see Prof. Sauveur, but was unsuccessful. F. K. Borrow was given a commission as Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1914, but had to relinquish it, on account of ill health, in August, 1915. His health has much improved and he hopes to resume active work toward the end of this year. Davis, A. W:, see British Columbia Engineers, below. C. in January, 1918, for five weeks; enlisted with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in February, 1918, and attended a training course for officer cadets at Chatham for six weeks. He was commissioned 2d Lieutenant, Royal Engineers, in April, 1918. After two months on home training at Chatham, he landed in France on June 23, 1918, posted to 180th Tunnelling Co., R. The zone-melting process in which redistribution of solute in a solid bar is effected by the passage of a molten zone is considered mathematically. Simple approximate techniques are developed for computing the manner in which redistribution occurs as molten zones continue to pass. The introduction of the "zone-melting flux" provides valuable insight into the nature of the phenomenon, as well as a central mathematical theme in terms of which the process can be discussed. Curves are presented for typical and general cases. AN extremely efficient purification technique was described recently by Pfann.1 Known as zone refining, it consisted of the slow passage of a series of molten zones, produced by external heaters, through a long solid ingot of the substance to be purified. Equations were given for the maximum separation attainable, and a numerical computation method was described for obtaining the concentration in the ingot after a given number of zone passes. The present paper offers an interpretation of the physical nature of zone melting in terms of a transport process in which formal diffusive and convec-tive flows occur. This interpretation, in addition to providing insight into the physical nature of the process, also provides a basis for its mathematical treatment. From this basis, useful equations are developed for the solute concentration in the ingot as a function of the number of zone passes. These are applicable particularly where large numbers of passes are necessary and where numerical computational methods might be laborious. All considerations will deal with the limiting form of the process, described by Pfann,' in which: 1—Diffusion in the solid is considered negligible. 2—Mixing in the liquid is supposed, complete. 3—The distribution coefficient, k, measuring the ratio (at equilibrium) of solute concentration in the solid to that in the liquid is supposed, independent of composition. In general, this paper will be concerned with a bar of uniform (actually unit) cross section, ex- tending in the x-direction from x = 0 to x = L, where L may be infinite. Zone melting is a transport process, and as such must admit of interpretation in terms of a flux of transported quantity. However, the progress of operation is not measured in units of time but in terms of the number of completed zone passes. Consequently, the zone-melting flux will be a rate, per unit pass, rather than per unit time. The description of this flux and the examination of its properties is given below. Recent start-up of the Pinto Valley mine and mill is expected to add to domestic copper mine capacity by some 62,500 tpy. Owned and operated by Cities Service Co.'s Miami Operations, the complex lies approximately 5% miles west of Miami, Ariz. The estimated $100- million project, the largest single construction project ever undertaken by Cities Service, includes the Pinto Valley open pit mine, a 40,000-tpd concentrator, and a 10-mile slurry pipeline that will transport a 28% copper concentrate slurry to a new filter plant located in Miami. Concentrate will be treated nearby at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.'s new smelter complex. The current pit design contains reserves of approximately 350 million tons of ore averaging 0.44% Cu. Based on an initial production target of 40,000 tpd ore and 60,000 tpd waste, mine life is estimated at 24 years. The current stripping ratio is 1.5: 1, requiring the ultimate removal of more than 500 million tons of waste and leach-grade material.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the effect of feed size on the integral rate at which feed material is dry ground in a laboratory rod mill. The data are interpreted in terms of the Gaudin-Meloy distribution equation. The equation, Mo — Mt/t = Aoxo r-1, is found to hold for feed sizes smaller than some critical size or for grinding times larger than some critical time. It is shown that a feed grindability is related to this critical size, which appears to be the transition between predominately impact and predominately attrition grinding. Detailed research on feed size effects in comminution has been rather limited. Gaudin1 ground single-sieve fractions of quartz for extended time periods (four hours) in a laboratory ball mill. His work, which was designed to study the nature of size distributions, showed that there is a critical feed size above which comminution occurs primarily by attrition. For his system, the critical size was about 2-mm when using 22-mm balls. In a more recent investigation2 single-sieve fractions of quartz were ground in a laboratory rod mill for constant time periods (15 min) to determine how feed size affects the grindability of the material. This work showed that grindability is essentially independent of feed size in the rod mill after this moderately long grinding period. To further clarify this observation, a study in which feed size and grinding times are varied over a fairly wide range, and particularly, a study of the dependence of the integral rate of grinding on feed size during the initial stages of rod milling is necessary. The electrical resistance of titanium as a function of purity and temperature was measured from —325" to 2800°F. Two points of inflection in the data plots were found, and an increase in resistance with increase in temperature above the transformation was observed. IN 1948 Greiner and Ellis' reported on the thermal and electrical properties of titanium, including a study of the effect of temperature on the electrical resistance. The materials used in the research were obtained from the United States Bureau of Mines, where powder metallurgy techniques were being employed for consolidation purposes. These authors found a decreasing resistance with increasing temperature above 1625°F, and concluded that the latter temperature represented the point of transformation from hexagonal close-packed to body-centered cubic structure on heating. They reported a specific resistivity value of 55x10-6 ohm-cm, and showed that dp/dt was positive, decreasing with increasing temperature above ambient. In one of his early texts Hume-Rothery2 mentioned that certain metals, including titanium, exhibited minima in plots of resistance vs temperature. He indicated that this occurred at 212°F. Reporting many years ago on the effect of temperature on the electrical resistance of zirconium, de Boer and Fast³ showed that phase transformation in this sister metal occurred over a range of temperatures, the extent varying with its purity. Graphs of resistance vs temperature, showing transformation effects over a range of several hundred degrees, were presented for relatively impure metal. In the latter case the resistance decreased with increasing temperature throughout the region of partial phase transformation, thereafter increasing as predicted for normal metals by modern theories of the solid state. Since the quality of metal used in previous studies was substandard compared with iodide-type titanium, and in view of the fact that there seemed to be some rather unusual observations in the reported literature, it was decided to undertake a more extensive study of the thermal effects using high purity titanium, and to include temperature ranges beyond those which had been studied in order to ascertain whether or not the characteristics of zirconium would be duplicated. Experimental Materials Materials used in this investigation included commercial quality titanium (Ti-75A produced by the Titanium Metals Corp. of America) in the form of ¼ in. diam rods, and high purity iodide titanium (produced by the Foote Mineral Co.) in the form of crystal bar of irregular size. The latter was cold-swaged into rod form and machined to the desired size. Lead wires to all specimens consisted of 18 gage Ti-75A. Chemical analyses of the stock materials are given in Table I. AS reported several years ago,' nitrogen may be taken up from the atmosphere by austenitic Cr-Ni steels during creep or creep-rupture tests. This was indicated by chemical analysis and by the appearance of a new microstructural phase, or phases, tentatively identified as chromium nitride (S), at the surface or at the intergranular cracks associated with fracture. The nitrogen pickup was observed to be dependent on time, temperature, and deformation. In a more recent investigation, a sample was obtained in which there was sufficient of the precipitate to suggest that it could be readily identified by X-ray diffraction. This sample had been taken from a 1/4 in. diam creep-rupture specimen of annealed, type 304L stainless steel of the following initial composition: C, 0.03 pct; Mn, 0.65; P, 0.010; S, 0.019; Si, 0.54; Cr, 19.50; Ni, 12.02; N, 0.031; and Al, 0.005. The specimen had ruptured after 10,470 hr at 1500°F (2000 psi). In this case nitrides were distributed across the whole section of the sample, Fig. 1. The precipitate occurred both at the grain boundaries and within the grains; the latter precipitate had in some cases the appearance of pearl-ite, and in others was distinctly Widmanstatten. Chemical analysis of the sample after test showed 0.64 pct "soluble" nitrogen (soluble in 1:1 hydrochloric acid: water) and 0.18 pct "insoluble7' nitrogen (insoluble in the hydrochloric acid solution but dissolved by fuming sulphuric acid). For identification of the precipitate by X-ray diffraction, the matrix in the surface layer of the specimen was dissolved by prolonged attack in an alcoholic solution of picric and hydrochloric acids. The appearance of the specimen surface after such etching is shown in Fig. 1c. The diffraction pattern of the surface-concentrated precipitate was obtained with a recording spectrometer in both the forward and back-reflection regions (the latter by adapting a special fixture to the conventional X-ray unit). The observed X-ray diffraction lines, Table I, show the presence of Cr,N and CrN; the agreement with interplanar spacings calculated from reported data2,3 is quite good. Since it has been suggested' that CrN dissolves only in concentrated sulphuric acid, whereas Cr2N dissolves in dilute hydrochloric or sulphuric acids, an effort was made to distinguish between the two nitrides. This proved possible, inasmuch as etching in a dilute solution of hydrochloric acid gave a sample in which microscopic examination showed that much of the Widmanstatten-pearlitic precipitate within the grains had been eaten out, leaving the grain boundary precipitate in relief, and which, when examined by X-ray diffrac-

ALFRED WILLIAM GAUGER ??Al" or '?Doc" to his many friends in the coal and chemical industries- is known for his research talents and organizing ability. Appropriately the first public recognition of his technical ability was by the A.I.M.E. in the publishing of a paper by George A. Burrell and Alfred W. Gauger in the "Transactions" for the year 1916. "Al" Gauger was born at St. Paul, July 31, 1892. He graduated in chemistry at the University of Minnesota in 1914. A year later he began his initiation into the mysteries of coal mining when he joined the safety division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Pitts- burgh, serving from 1915 to 1917.

The pottery department has been aptly described as the "heart of the zinc plant," md every operator of a horizontal-retort plant is acquainted with the fact that good retort practice is the keystone of the smelting process. Since retorts and condensers are clay products, it is obvious that improvements in other branches of the ceramic industry should be observed for possible adoption in the pottery process for zinc smelting. Deaeration of clay bodies is one of the improvements that have become fully, established in many brick and pottery plants. Our investigation of a number of these installations always yielded the same answer—improved practice. Improvement in workability, elimination of laminations, less porosity, greater wet and dry strength, were among the claims put forth for this process. All of these features are exceedingly desirable characteristics in the manufacture of a zinc retort. A preliminary test, which involved truck transportation of deaired slugs over a relatively long distance, did show the value of many of these characteristics in forming the retort. Results from the standpoint of , longer retort life in the smelting furnace were not outstanding. The idea lay dormant for several years but was revived again in 1940, when it was decided to make whatever changes were necessary in the equipment for pottery manufacture to fully demonstrate the process. A number of the manu- facturers of machinery for clay work were asked to submit proposals, and the plan finally adopted was extremely simple and economical. Machine FOR DeaeRRATING Selection of the ''Straight-line'' principle for conversion of the "Wettengel" pug mill to a ''vacuum-extrusion" machine preserved some usable parts of the original equipment, such as the drive mechanism, and main shaft. The converted machine consists of a feed hopper, a compression and shredding zone, a vacuum chamber, and an extrusion barrel, as shown in Fig. I. In operation the clay mix travels from the feed hopper into the compression zone, where it is compressed and finally forced around the tapered cone into the vacuum chamber. As it enters this chamber the clay body is shredded into thin plates, for exFosure to the vacuum. The shredder consists of a hub mounted on the main shaft, to which are bolted segmental sections, each of which carries shredder knives. The compression zone and extrusion barrel function as seals for the vacuum chamber and the shredded clay mix is agitated thoroughly during its exposure to the vacuum. A vacuum pump, equipped with a 3-hp. motor, is attached to this chamber, and maintains 25 to 26 in. vacuum during operation of the mill. After the solution of an iron ore, or metallic iron, in an acid, for the determination of phosphorus, it is necessary to evaporate the solution to dryness and to heat the residue to effect the complete separation of silica. TWO systems are used for heating air in blast-furnace operations: I. The double surface system, in which a cast-iron pipe is heated on the outer surface, and, at the same time, heats the blast from its inner surface. This is simple in operation and gives a continuous effect, but is limited by 1100" F. as a maximum temperature of the blast. 11. The single surface system, by which large surfaces of fire-brick are heated, and air passed over the heated surface, absorbing the heat and carrying it on to the furnace. This system is more comylex than the double surface, as it invoives the reversing of the air and gas every hour and a half. The single surface system has two advantages: 1. The blast can be heated to a temperature of 1800° F. 2. The stoves are indestructible. From recent experience it has been found that 1300" F. to 1400' F. is the best average temperature for economy of coal for safe working. This is equivalent to a saving of 11/2 to 2 cwt. of coal per ton of iron over the extreme limit of cast-iron stoves. Independently of this, it is a strong point in favor of this system that the blast can be raised to a temperature of 1800° F. within an hour when the hearth is getting cold. All furnacemen know the ralue of a hot hearth for quality and quantity of iron. Cooling of a hearth occurs from leaky tuyeres, scaffolds, or heavy burden. When there is not sufficient coal at the tuyeres to seize on the oxygen of the entering air and convert it at once to carbonic oxide, there will not be enough heat to liquefy the cinder. Black cinder and poor iron are the results. The remedy is additional heat from the blast. If the stoves will give 1800" in place of 1100°, it is obvions that the furnaces will get around sooner, and without waiting for a change of burden at the tunnel head to bring extra coal to the hearth. The heat absorption caused by a leaky tuyere will chill the hearth and drive the zone of fusion higher up in the furnace. This loss must be supplied, and the calorics lost to the hearth must be regained before good iron can be made. Take another case: A furnace carefully burdened on No. 1 iron, during a spell of damp weather, goes on to No. 2 or No. 3. Heat is lost to the furnace through absorption by the moisture, and less burden must be carried in order to get back on No. 1. When the

THE drill sampling and evaluation of the Piney River ilmenite property was carried out during the early part of 1944 by E. J. Longyear Co., using the company's standard core-drill outfits to complete 44 holes to an average depth of 110 ft., from which were collected 1100 samples. The Piney River ilmenite-apatite lode is 25 miles north of Lynchburg, in Nelson and Amherst Counties, Virginia (Fig. I). Its elevation is about 900 ft. above sea level and it lies in the old pre-Cambrian complex of crystalline rocks that make up the Piedmont physiographic province lying east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The terrain is gently rolling and well watered, and is drained by the Piney and Tye Rivers, which are tributary to the James. GEOLOGY The Piney River ore body comprises the upper, weathered part of a tabular basic rock, which occurs in a large area of granite-gneiss. The section containing profitable ore is about 3000 ft. long. It is separated naturally by thinning, into northeastern and southwestern segments with widths of 300 and 100 ft. respectively. The dip averages 45° southeast but steepens locally (Figs. 2 and 3). The unaltered rock is an even, granular mixture of feldspar, ilmenite, and apatite, to which Watson1 gave the name Nelsonite. The decomposed ore body, which is now being exploited by open cut, is a yellowish clay material in which black ilmenite and glassy apatite are the only conspicuous minerals. An economically important structural feature of the deposit is a banding of minerals coinciding with the dip and strike of the dike. This is more promounced in the footwall of the northeastern part of the intrusive, where there is also a higher than average concentration of ilmenite. According to Watson,1 the Ti02 content of the Nelsonites of this region ranges from 10 to 42 per cent, while P205 varies from 4 to 15 per cent. It is inexpedient at present to disclose exact metal content of the Piney River ore body; suffice it to say that the average tenor lies well within the extremes noted by Watson. SAMPLING METHODS AND PROCEDURE During a preliminary inspection of the ore body, Longyear engineers surmised that because of its soft, clayey character, drill sampling would yield little core, therefore they made all possible preparations to procure accurate samples of the drill cuttings, or sludge. The first requisite in obtaining representative drill cuttings is to secure their full recovery. Only under certain conditions, and by employing a most careful and rigid sampling technique, is this possible. There must be no loss of the water circulating in the hole, and the velocity

Drilling in Missouri in 1944 was nearly treble the rate of 1943 because of continued development of the Tarkio pool in Atchison County and the preparation of a pool in Jackson County for a water-injection project. The pipe line from the Prairie Point gas pool in Platte County was in operation throughout the year of 1944, but several of the shallow oil pools in Cass and Jackson Counties were off production during much of 1944 because of a shortage of help. Table I gives a summary of activities by counties. The total footage drilled was 41,475 .ft., of which 21,187 ft. was by rotary tools and 20,268 ft. by cable tools.

The transportation of solids in pipe lines is a matter of deep concern in many fields of engineering. Much experimental and theoretical work has been done in an effort to devise means of designing pipe lines that will satisfactorily transport given solid loads, but there remain many unanswered questions in this field. The present discussion will be confined to a rather narrow portion of this field and will endeavor to point out certain factors that may well be considered when comparing the relative economy of various installations. The data have been presented previously but a new interpretation was prompted by a suggestion in a paper by Professor O'Brien,' of the University of California, that the friction work per pound of dry material should be considered in determining the relative efficiency of various installations. This method of considering relative economy in various pipe lines leads to some rather unexpected conclusions, especially with reference to the economy of large pipe sizes. A previous suggestion by the writer concerning the economy of a rather peculiar type of installation is strengthened. It is not believed that the considerations set forth herein apply directly in the case of dredge lines, where economy is largely a matter of a high rate of pumping in order to reduce the unit overhead charge. The transportation of solids in pipe lines is a matter of deep concern in many fields of engineering. Much experimental and theoretical work has been done in an effort to devise means of designing pipe lines that will satisfactorily transport given solid loads, but there remain many unanswered questions in this field. The present discussion will be confined to a rather narrow portion of this field and will endeavor to point out certain factors that may well be considered when comparing the relative economy of various installations. The data have been presented previously but a new interpretation was prompted by a suggestion in a paper by Professor O'Brien,' of the University of California, that the friction work per pound of dry material should be considered in determining the relative efficiency of various installations. This method of considering relative economy in various pipe lines leads to some rather unexpected conclusions, especially with reference to the economy of large pipe sizes. A previous suggestion by the writer concerning the economy of a rather peculiar type of installation is strengthened. It is not believed that the considerations set forth herein apply directly in the case of dredge lines, where economy is largely a matter of a high rate of pumping in order to reduce the unit overhead charge.
