IN recent years, the interest in liquid metals as heat-transfer media for power plants has been very great. The possibility of the development of nuclear power plants has increased this interest and served as the impetus behind much research on low melting metals and alloys for such purposes. The principal reasons for consideration of liquid metals as heat-transfer media lie in their high thermal conductivity and consequent high heat-transfer coefficients, stability at high temperatures, and the high ranges of temperature possible. The element gallium possesses some of the requisite properties for a heat-transfer liquid. It is a unique material, having a low melting point and a high boiling point. Pure gallium melts at 29.78oC, and suitable alloying will produce a metal which melts below room temperature. The boiling point is about 2000°C. As it is a liquid metal, the heat-transfer characteristics would be good. Gallium is not now readily available, due in part to a lack of uses for the metal. Nevertheless, it is not a rare element, and a sufficient supply of gallium exists to permit its consideration for this use. Since gallium has some promise as a heat-transfer liquid, owing to its unique properties, research on the subject was carried on at Battelle Memorial Institute at the request of the Bureau of Ships, U.S.N. The research had as its objectives the determination of the effect of alloying on the melting point of gallium, and the study of the corrosion of possible container materials. In this research, alloys were found which had significantly lower melting points than pure gallium, but none which simultaneously fulfilled other additional requirements, chiefly the corrosion problem. Neither was it found possible to reduce the melting point of certain otherwise suitable alloys appreciably by small additions of gallium or gallium alloys. The results gave little hope that gallium alloys can be developed which enhance the good properties and minimize the undesirable characteristics of elemental gallium. Thus, gallium now appears less promising than other metallic heat-transfer media. The experimental thermal-analysis techniques used in this work have been described.' Experimental Results As a first approximation, the development of low melting gallium alloys was based on alloying elements suitable for use in a nuclear power plant, which also lowered the melting point of gallium. Information from the literature, summarized in Table I, indicates that. tin, aluminum, and zinc are the only suitable elements which cause a lowering of the melting point of gallium. Indium and silver also lower the melting point of gallium, but are of little interest for use in nuclear power plants. Of the elements reported not to lower the melting point of gallium, there is some ambiguity on the behavior of copper. Weibke3 obtained solidus arrest temperatures of 29°C for Cu-Ga alloys from 60 to 90 pct Ga, 0.8C lower than the generally accepted melting point. This may be the effect of a eutectic close to gallium, or, more likely, the result of impurities, or experimental error. The seven elements listed in Table I whose effects were not known were of potential interest if they lowered the melting point of gallium. Their effects were determined experimentally for this reason. Binary alloys containing nominally 2 pct of each of these elements were prepared in the form of 2-g melts by placing the components in a graphite crucible and holding them in an argon atmosphere at 370°C for 5 hr. These melts were then subjected to thermal analysis. In all cases. the solidus temperature was the melting point of gallium. Since these elements (As, Ca, Ce, Mg. Sb, Si, and T1) did not lower the melting point of gallium, they were not considered further as components of a eutectic-type alloy. Ga-Sn-Zn Alloys Preliminary considerations of this system for low-melting alloys were encouraging. All three binary systems were of the simple eutectic type. The composition and melting points of the eutectics were as follows: Sn-9 pct Zn (199°C), Ga-8 pct Sn (20°C), and Ga-5 pct Zn (25°C). Therefore, the probability of a ternary eutectic was high. For reasons to be discussed later, aluminum could not be used as an alloying constituent, leaving the Ga-Sn-Zn system as the only one of interest for low-melting gallium-

The Upper Freeport coal in the Freeport and New Kensington quadrangles, Pennsylvania, varies from a bony streak to a thick coal deposit often exceeding ninety inches, the "Double" or "Thick Freeport". Distinctive basal partings, a central bone layer, and a canneloid top bench may be present. The appearance of a sandstone roof, sandstone rolls, and bony coal at the top of the main coal bench can be anticipated in thin Freeport areas when basal partings are absent. When the two basal partings are present, a shale roof is normal. These effects are correlated with the original topography upon which the coal was deposited. The original depositional high areas tend to coincide with present structural highs. Preliminary data indicate that coal quality, in part, is affected by the deposi-tional setting. In "high" areas, a tendency exists for the main coal bench to contain higher percentages of fusain and mineral matter. Within limits, some-what higher ash fusion temperatures appear to correlate with paleotopographic highs. As a result of these findings, critical examination of the paleotopography and related sediments is indicated in other areas and other coals. The Upper Freeport coal is quite variable both in thickness and composition in the Freeport and New Kensington quadrangles of Pennsylvania (Figure 1). The coal horizon in these quadrangles is marked either by a thin carbonaceous shale bed or by a single bed containing a variable number of partings (binders). The complex coal zone known locally as the "Double" or "Thick Freeport" contains the Upper Freeport Coal Bed at the base; but in addition, it has an overlying bone layer and an upper coal bed occasionally capped with a canneloid layer. The "Thick Freeport" often exceeds 90 inches in thickness, whereas the normal Upper Freeport coal usually varies between 34 and 50 inches.

The alloys formed by the addition of nickel to iron by conventional metallurgical procedures show physical properties that differ widely from those of the individual metals. The effect of alloying on the mechanical properties is most pronounced in alloys containing between 15 and 25 per cent nickel. The tensile strength of an alloy containing, for example, 20 per cent nickel and 80 per cent iron (with 0.06 per cent carbon), in an annealed condition, is above 150,000 lb. per sq. in.$ owing to a martensitic type of transformation, as compared with about 50,000 lb. per sq. in. for pure iron in the same condition. The object of this work was to determine whether the same beneficial alloying effect coulcl be obtained in alloys of iron and nickel prepared by powder metallurgy technique. Procedure Bars and pellets for tension and compression tests, respectively, were made. Two groups of specimens were prepared: (I) by cold-pressing the powders and sintering; (2) by cold-pressing the powders, sintering, repressing and resintering. Raw Materials Nickel powder supplied by Metals Disintegrating Co., marked MD-151, was used. A typical analysis of this powder was as follows: sulphur, 0.040 per cent; copper, 0.18; iron, 0.23; manganese, 0.002; magnesium, o.oo15; lead, 0.035; tin> 0.025; silicon, 0.08; chromium, 0.008. Electrolytic iron powder supplied by Plastic Metals Inc. was used. A repre-sentative chemical analysis for impurities other than gases, supplied by the vendor, gave the following results: carbon, 0.005 per cent; manganese, 0.002; silicon, 0.003; phosphorus, 0.001; sulphur, 0.004; nickel, 0.008. The fractions from these powders passing a 325-mesh sieve were reduced in hydrogen at 600°C. for one hour, to clean the sur-faces of the particles. The reduced pow-ders, slightly caked, were ground in a mortar and screened again through a 325-mesh sieve. Mixing The proper proportions of the powders were mixed overnight on rolls, in glass jars fitted with iron-wire baffles to break aggregates of particles that might form. Pressing All specimens were compacted on hy-draulic presses. The pellets were com-pacted in a cylindrical die, 34-in. diameter. The ratio of thickness to the diameter of the pellets was maintained as nearly as possible at 0.9, as specified for standard short compression pieces. The tensile bars were made by compacting 30 grams of powder. Their shape is shown in Fig. I. The compacting pressures for the pellets and the tensile bars were:

Successful hydraulic pressure treatment of oil and gas wells that have long producing intervals, multiple pay zones, fluid thief zones, or natural or induced fractures has long been a serious problem plaguing the petroleum industry. High fluid-injection rates, straddle packers, ball sealers, and either liquid or solid additives to the treating fluids are being used to cope with this difficult and costly problem.l-6 The use of ball sealers and straddle packers is limited, in practice, to wells that have been completed with perforated cemented casings or liners. Well stimulation with ball sealers and straddle packers is usually successful as long as the cement remains competent. The other techniques of diverting are used with all types of completions. However, there are two significant disadvantages of the high rate method: excessive horsepower requirements, and the need of large treating-fluid volume. Consequently, most well stimulation techniques that involve diverting depend upon ball sealers or granular materials. Liquid diverting agents, and some of the solid ones in use today, frequently will cause formation damage. On the other hand, the most popular particulate diverting agents often are so soluble in the treating fluid that they become largely ineffective; their particle size is severely reduced as they dissolve while being transported through thousands of feet of pipe to the formation face down hole. In our attempts to deal with the shortcomings of these diverting agents, we experimented with a large variety of potentially suitable deformable materials the solubility of which could be controlled. Following are the criteria for the diverting agent sought: 1. The material must be effective in reducing fluid loss to thief zones, including existing fractures and very high permeability layers in the formation to be pressure treated. 2. The material must have enough strength to bridge under the treating pressure. 3. The material must be insoluble or slowly soluble in the treating fluids so that the particles retain sufficient size to be effective after they reach the formation face. 4. The material must be completely soluble in the produced oil or condensate liquid so that it can be removed readily; it must not cause formation damage. A number of products consisting of various polymers blended with waxes and other solid hydrocarbons were examined. All these materials satisfied the criteria for a diverting agent and also exhibited some degree of plastic deformability. On the basis of initial tests of strength and hardness, several blends of wax and polymer were selected for extensive testing in the laboratory and the field. These compounds have congealing temperatures ranging from 140 to 190F; they are insoluble in water and soluble in oil. They conformed, therefore, to the criteria specified for a theoretically superior diverting agent. Laboratory and field tests were conducted using these wax-polymer materials to demonstrate that the use of a deformable diverting agent can significantly improve fluid diverting performance. The yttl-irtm-nickel system has been investigated by metallo-graphic, thermal ard X-ray methods. There are nine intermetal-lic compounds present: Y3Ni, Y3Ni,, YNi,, YNi,, Y,Ni,, YNi,, and Y,Nil, which rodergo peritectic decomposition and YNi and YNi, which melt congruently. There are eutectics at 34.8, 57.5 and 93.3 at pct Ni which melt at 805°, 950 and 1285 C, respectively. Crystallographic data are given for YNi, YNi,, YNi,, YNi5and Y,Ni,. The terminal solid solubility is low. In recent work by Fisher and Fullhart' in which yttrium crucibles to be used for containers of uranium-chromium eutectic were clad with a high nickel steel, a low melting phase formed where the yttrium was in contact with the steel. To investigate the cause of this phenomenon, Daane, et al. made a survey study of yttrium systems with chromium, manganese, iron, and nickel and found an 18 wt pct Ni (weight percent) alloy to melt at approximately 950°C. voge13 in a study of the systems of cerium, lanthanum, and praseodymium with nickel found six compounds of the same formula in each system, i.e., R3Ni, RNi, RNiz, RNi3, RNi4, and RNi5. Since there is a great similarity between yttrium and the rare earths, compound formation was likely to occur also in the yttrium-nickel system. voge13 observed that the ability of transition metals to form compounds with the rare earths diminishes in the order nickel, cobalt, and iron while no compounds are formed with manganese, chromium, and titanium. Available data on yttrium systems with these elements indicate similar behavior, except that a slightly greater tendency toward compound formation is apparent. Simple eutectics with limited solid solubility have been found in the yttrium-titanium4 and yttrium-chromium5 systems, but at least one compound is present in the yttrium-manganese system.' In the case of yttrium-iron, at least three compounds are present,5 while only two are present in the cerium-iron,' and no compounds are present in the lanthanum-iron5 system. On the basis of both the trend in the alloying behavior of yttrium and rare-earth metals with the first transition series metals and the large number of compounds in the cerium-nickel system, one might expect six or more compounds to form in the nickel-yttrium system. A consideration of Hume-Rothery's rules of alloying based on size factor, electronegati-vity, and valence predicted low terminal solid solubility and possible compound formation. Duval Corporation, the owners of the Sierrita, Esperanza, and Mineral Park copper operations in Arizona, first acquired the mineral rights to their Battle Mountain, Lander County, Nevada, property in 1962. Development of the mine commenced in mid - 1965, and the copper operation began at the end of 1968. The ore, a mixture of chalcocite and chalcopyrite, was milled and floated at a rate of 3, 175 mtpd (3,500 stpd). Because of low copper grade and price, the plant was shut down after about ten years of operation. Attention was then turned to an adjacent low-grade precious metal ore body which contained 2.74 g Au and 3.4 g Ag per mt (0.08 oz Au and 0.10 oz Ag) and minor amounts of copper. Test work revealed recovery by Carbon-In- Pulp treatment would amount to approximately 2.8 mt (90,000 oz) each of gold and silver per year. A rapid engineering and construction schedule resulted in the world's largest, as of late 1980, Carbon-In- Pulp plant being put on-stream in January 1979, with a capacity of 2.720 mtpd (3,000 stpd). Fortunately, the original crushing and grinding plant with all its infra structure was available, and the only modification needed was the addition of a gravity circuit to remove coarse free gold ahead of Carbon- In-Pulp treatment. One of the four primary 500 mm (20 in.) cyclone underflows in the primary ball mill circuit is directed to a secondary ball mill where its product is again cycloned. The cyclone underflow is screened at 3,360 microns (6 mesh) with the undersize being treated on two Pan American 1.07 m by 2. 14 m (42 in. by 84 in.) jigs. Hutch product is further concentrated on two Wilfley tables, a magnetic separator, and on a third Wilfley table where approximately 930 g (30 oz) of gold are recovered each day for amalgamation, retorting, and smelting. Returning to the grinding circuit, the final cyclone overflow is sent to the original plant tailings thickener to obtain proper pulp density for Carbon-In-Pulp treatment. Thickener underflow, at about 40% solids, is then conditioned with air and lime in a series of two 8.5 m by 9.75 m (28 ft by 32 ft) 15O cone bottom Pachucas for oxidation of pyrrhotite. The pulp is then split into two streams for cyanidation for 48 hours in two lines of eight Pachucas of the same size. Pulp is transferred from tank to tank by auxiliary air lifts. The derivations of three methods of computing the static pressure gradients in natural gas wells have been presented to show the assumptions made. Charts were developed from which the pressure gradients may be read when the well-head pressure, the well fluid gravity, depth, and the average well temperature are given. A chart for estimating the well fluid gravity from the condensate content and separator gas gravity is included. The effect of the increased average well temperature after flow on the calculation of the static pressure gradient is discussed. Introduction Reservoir pressures have been calculated from well-head pressures for gas wells for many years. As the pressure measurements become more accurate, the need for a reliable calculation of the static pressure gradient often arises. This paper will develop the several methods for computing the pressure gradient in gas wells and make a comparison between them. The method of calculating static pressure gradients in common use is Eq. I (ref. I) or its counterpart which includes a factor for the deviation of the gas from the ideal gas law. An alternate method is to compute the average density of the gas in the well and multiply by the well depth in a manner similar to that used for liquid gradients. Derivation of Formulas A static pressure gradient is a special case of the general fluid-flow equation. Consider a pound of fluid flowing in a vertical column from point I to point 2, Fig. I. In a previous paper' analyses were given describing solute redistribution in dendritic solidification. The analyses were undertaken primarily to permit prediction of "severity of microsegregation" in a casting or ingot after solidification and cooling to room temperature, but can also be used to predict "local fraction solid' as a function of temperature in the solidifying alloy. Numerical results were given for Al-Cu alloys. The aims of this paper are to examine the validity of some of the assumptions of that analysis, and to compare predictions of the theory with experiments. All experiments reported are on Al-Cu alloys, the bulk on Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy. EXPERIMENTS Experiments conducted were on small ingots, 41/2 in. in diam by about 10 in. high. solidified in a controlled thermal environment (i.e., in a resistance-heated, re-circulating air furnace, whose temperature could be controlled to 1°C). In one series of experiments, the ingots were solidified very slowly (solidification time was varied from 8 to 1000 hr) and at constant rate of heat extraction. In a second series of experiments the ingots were solidified ( 'unidirectionally". Fig. 1 is a sketch of the method of making the two different types of ingots. The unidirectionally solidified ingots were fully columnar, and the slowly solidified ingots had equiaxed structures, Fig. 2. In making the slowly solidified ingots, the mold employed was carbon steel, coated with inert refractory. Typically the mold and its environment were heated to 700°C. The molten alloy was then poured into the mold and the temperature of the system equilibrated above the liquidus. The environment of the mold was next cooled with a controller responding to a differential thermocouple that measured the difference between the temperature of the melt and the temperature of the mold environment. The differential thermocouple consisted of one chromel-alumel junction in the melt connected in opposition with a second junction in the furnace. The potential across the differential thermocouple was input to the controller which acted to keep this potential at a set. constant value; hence the temperature difference between the two junctions was maintained nearly constant. Major resistance to heat flow in the above apparatus was between the metal surface and the furnace atmosphere, not in the metal itself. By maintaining a constant temperature difference between the metal and the furnace atmosphere, the controller maintained an essentially constant rate of heat extraction during solidification, regardless of amount of heat released by the metal per unit temperature change. When the metal temperature dropped just below the eutectic temperature. the ingot was removed from the furnace and water-quenched. The unidirectionally solidified ingots were cast in a similar mold to the foregoing except that provision was made to extract heat through the bottom face of the mold by passing air or water through the mold base, Fig. 1. Gas-metal heterogeneous reactions and zone-lrelting were sinultarneously employed to produce several high-purity irons with low interstitial contents in a levitating- zone melter. Successive zone-tneltitzg pusses were made in carious sequences of atmospheves which included prepuvified tank hy-drogeta, water vapor hydrogen, palladiuril-purified hydrogen, and vacuunm of 2 x 10-6 Torr. Different irons ranging in purity from 99.89 to 99.996 pct with residual curbon contents of 17, 8 to 10, and 3 to 5 ppm have been Drepared. No measuvable gradient in the residual carbon content was observed along the entire zone-melted length (6-10 in.) in I-ilz.-diameter bars. The absence of a carbon-concentration gradient in the solid indicates an apparent distvihution coefficient of 1, an unusual condition. Internal friction, solid-state extraction, and hot-hardness results indicate that the level of mobile carbon in a iron depends on the gas-metal heterogeneous reactions employed. Purification under an oxidizing atmosphere resulted in the immobilization of nearly all of the carbon present at leuels of 10 ppm or less. Continuation of purification in a reducing atmosphere veturued the carbon to a state of mobility which was aguin reversed by further purification in all oxidizing atmosphere. The immobilization of curbon at "vesidual levels " is believed to be associated with a strong interaction between carbon and oxygen atoms. frons with low carbon and nitrogen contetzts which did not exhibit a hot-hardness peak were produced after zone ynelting in vacuum. CARBON, nitrogen, and oxygen have strong and well-known effects on many properties of iron. These effects persist even at concentrations of 5 to 20 ppm. The intent of the present investigation was to establish procedures for the preparation of high-purity iron with concentrations of these elements in the range of 5 to 20 ppm and lower. The results reported here deal with the procedures employed to prepare high-purity iron, and with observations on the behavior of certain elements at "residual levels": particularly carbon. The details of the (levitating) zone melter in which the final purification steps are performed and the necessary control of the pertinent solidification variables have been described previously.1,2 MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES Commercial electrolytic iron was induction vacuum-melted and cast into 30-lb ingots. Melt additions and ingot analyses for carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen are noted in Table I. All ingots were melted in stabilized zirconia crucibles conditioned with one iron wash heat. Middle sections of the ingots were forged to 1-1/4-in. rounds, machined to 1-in.-diameter bars, then cut to 36-in. lengths. The zone-melting operations were performed on six iron bars (A to F) at a freezing velocity of 2 in. per hr with the freezing interface rotating2 at 200, 300, or 400 rpm. Liquid zones were passed through the bars in various sequences of atmospheres, Table 11, including prepurified tank H2, palladium-purified Hz, wet H2, and system vacuum of 2 x 1018 Torr. Wet-Hz atmospheres were obtained by bubbling palladium-purified Hz through water exhibiting a resistance of 3 megohms. This water was heated with a platinum-immersion heater and was degassed prior to use. Zone melting in a wet-HZ atmosphere resulted in oxidation of the elements which are oxi-dizable with respect to iron. Fine oxide particles were observed on the surface of the liquid zone, and were encased in the bar surface with the passage of the molten zone. Between each zone pass, the surface of the bar was removed by filing and deep etching; this was continued until the oxide formation ceased. The filings were magnetically separated and the residues analyzed by optical spectroscopy. These were especially high in silicon and manganese. Samples were removed from the iron bars, with few exceptions, following each zone-melting operation. A 0.08-in.-thick disc was cut with an Al2O3 cut-off wheel at a point 1/2 in. above the beginning of freezing. Material from each disc was used for hot-hardness measurements, resistivity-ratio measurements, and carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen analyses. Analyses for most other elements were

The apparatus was of a modified Sieverts type1&apos;2 with a reaction tube designed to function also as the cell component of an oxygen pressure gage. The reaction tube assembly is shown in Fig. 1 and described in Table I. The main body is a 1-in.-OD 15 mol pct calcia-stabilized zirconia tube. The ground-glass joint, g, the male part of which carried a prism for optical pyrometer use, was connected to the remainder of the Sieverts apparatus. The calibration of the cell (at its 1000°K operating temperature) for internal oxygen pressures (PO2in) in the range 0.2 to 10 9 atm was made against internal air pressures measured by mercury manometer and McLeod gage. At very low po2in values down to l<Tn atm the performance was checked by comparing pQ calculated from electromotive force measurement when the apparatus was filled with a) pure CO gas and b) a CO-CO2 mixture of the ratio CO-CO2 = 1:0.398, with Po, values calculated from the equilibrium constants of the following reactions at 1000°K:

Observations of dislocation structure in niobium are presented using two techniques. Triangular pits developed by electroetching are confined to orientations in the stereographic triangle between the (111) pole and planes of the (1ll) zone and require the presence of carbon. Some unusual electroetching phenomena at other orientations are noted. A chemical etch of dislocations decorated by the addition of carbon to 50 ppm reveals the complete dislocation line structure in a surface layer up to 30 p deep, with a resolution of less than 1 p. This effect is independent of surface orientation. The structure of subboundary nets may be resolved for misorientations up to about 1&apos;. Dislocation structures found in strain anneal grown crystals, such as helices, prismatic loops, and high-density areas, are observed. The measurement of dislocation density is discussed and values obtained in different ways are compared. IN the course of some work on the response of refractory metals to thermal-mechanical treatments, it was desired to examine the defect structure of relatively low dislocation density crystals of niobium in bulk form. Surface and bulk methods for the observation of dislocations have been reviewed by ~melinckx,&apos; and include etch pitting, decoration, and various X-ray techniques. The dislocation line structure has been developed by decoration in a few metals, although observations were limited to certain orientations, or by the coarseness and nonselectivity of the precipitate. The most commonly used technique is etch pitting. In niobium, etch pits have been developed chemically&apos;0," in material of high impurity content and electrolyti-cally&apos;&apos; in relatively pure material. In this paper, etch pits developed electrolytically, and the dislocation line structure of a surface layer developed by decoration and chemical etching, are examined, and observations are presented from both techniques. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Our starting material was electron-beam-melted niobium, swaged to 4 or -in.-diam rod. Chemical analysis is given in Table I. Single crystals were grown by a strain anneal technique using 1 to 2.5 pct of strain and growth temperatures of 1700" to 2300"~.&apos;~ Some crystals grown by zone melting were also examined. The desired surface orientation was exposed either by spark machining or by sectioning with a cut-off wheel and prepared for etching by electro-polishing.

This report on oil and gas development in Mississippi covers the period from Jan. I, 1944, to Dec. 31, 1944: Salt Domes During the year six salt domes were drilled for sulphur, but no commercial sulphur deposits were found. One salt dome, the Bruinsburg, in Claiborne County, has produced gas- at 935 to 940 ft&apos; in Moody&apos;s Branch marl. The Stringer salt dome in Smith County and the Ruth salt dome in Lincoln County both had a slight showing of heavy oil. Other salt domes have been dry. In addition to the Bruinsburg dome, the Allen salt dome, in Copiah County, and the Richton salt dome, in Perry County, were discovered in 1944; also the Sumrall dome, in Covington County. New Oil Fields Baxtemille Oil Field.—The Baxterville oil field was discoveredby the Gulf Refining Co, in sec. 7, T. I N., R. 16 W., Lamar County. At the end of the year this field had one oil well, with two active operations. Production for 1944 was 1047 bbl. of oil. GwinvilLe Field.—Gwinville field was discovered by S. W. Richardson, in sec. 24, T. 9 N., R. 19 W., Jefferson Davis County. This discovery well was a gas-distillate well, the oil being crystal clear. At the end of 1944 there were two gas wells and one oil well in the field. The oil well is approximately 2 1/2-miles from the gas- distillate wells. Gas production was 55,801 M cu. ft. and the distillate production was 2644 barrels. Heidelberg Oil Field.— The Gulf Refining Co. discovered the Heidelberg field in sec. 30, T. I N., R. 13 E., Jasper County, in January 1944. This field has by far exceeded the other 1943 and 1944 discoveries, having approximately 56 oil wells, 7 dry holes, and 10 active wells at the end of the year. Production to Jan. I, 1945 was 1,441,192 bbl. of oil. Mallalieu Oil Field.—The california Company discovered the Mallalieu oil field in set. 10, T. 7 N., R. 8 E,, Licoln. County. At the end of the year there was one well in the field with three active operations. Production was 32,303 bbl. of oil. Old Oil Fields Brookhaven Oil Field, in Lincoln County, has one oil well, which produced 2590 bbl. of oil during 1944. CarY Oil Field, Sharkey County1 has only one producing well, which produced 11,818 bbl- of oil during the Year- In Cranfield Oil Field, dams County, II oil wells and two gas-distillate wells were drilled in 1944 and there were five active wells on Dee. 31, 1944- The total production for the Year was 5251422 bbl-of oil. When the opportunity to revisit the region was offered in 1929, as a result of a cooperative agreement between the State Mining Board of Oregon and the United States Geological Survey, it seemed advisable to pay particular attention to this feature of the lodes, in the hope that if the idea of zonal relations was confirmed it might serve as a guide in exploitation.

Despite the large volume of literature on alloys of iron and silicon,&apos; there is little published information dealing specifically with the constitution, at various temperatures, of the alloys containing less than 0.10 per cent carl~on and from 0.5 to 4.5 per cent silicon that are used extensively in the electrical industry. Because such information was needed by those engaged in the production of these alloys in sheet and strip form, the constitution nas determined of a series of commercial silicon steels containing 0.05 to 0.08 per cent carbon and 0.20 to 4.1 per cent silicon, over the temperature range 1300° to 1500°F. These alloys were all from regular production heats and of commercial quality. The results of the tests are given in Fig. I and for comparison the constitution diagram of iron-silicon alloys with 0.01 to 0.02 per cent carbon, taken from the literature, is also presented Material and Procedure All steels were hot-rolled to a thickness of 0.060 to 0.080 in. and used in this condition. Their chemical compositions, including over-all check analysis, and "center" analysis for carbon and silicon, are given in Table I. The so-called center analysis was determined on samples pickled to remove the outer surface and leave only the center third of the gauge thickness—the portion of the sample on which metallographic ratings were based. In most, but not all, of the alloys, slightly higher carbon was found at the center than when the whole strip was sampled; the two methods of sampling show relatively little difference in silicon. Two of the steels, A and E, contain relatively high phosphorus, while I and K are somewhat higher in manganese than the others. The procedure consisted essentially of heating specimens (about 1/16 by 3/8 by 3/4 in.), protected from oxidation or change in carbon content, at a temperature in the desired range and for a selected period, after which they were quenched in iced brine; the degree of transformation that had then occurred was determined by metallographic examination.
