The effect of depth of formation penetration by casing perforations has been studied by means of an electrolytic model. It is found that the relative productivity of perforated casing is profoundly affected by the depth to which the formation is penetrated. The first in. of penetration i: of especial importance. A scaling equation which was shown to agree with experimental results at zero penetration is used to calculate the relative productivity of a waled down casing with scaled down perforations. INTRODUCTION In an earlier piper' the authors showed that the point sink representation of casing perforations is inade- quate. It was Pointed out at that time that while the electrolytic model results were a marked improvement over point-sink calculations, they still left a great deal to be desired in that the electrolytic model represented a case not realizable in practice, namely, a clean hole through the casing but undisturbed formation on the other side of the casing. Obviously, to be effective, the perforation must penetrate a finite distance into the producing formation. It was the purpose of the present investigation to find how the relative productivity of perforated casing varies with depth of penetration. The term "depth of penetration" as used in this paper refers to the distance which the perforation penetrates the producing formation. The amount of casing and cement penetrated is not taken into account, a fact which is discussed more fully later. The "casing radius," therefore, is to be interpreted as the radius of the boundary between cement and formation wall. in cases where the casing is not in contact with the formation wall. APPARATUS The electrolytic model experimental setup was identical with that described in the previous paper' except that the platinum electrodes were now allowed to project from the lucite cylinder by varying amounts. When fewer than eight electrodes were used, the unused ones were covered with a coat of insulating material to minimize disturbances to the current flow-lines. Comparison runs made with the unused electrodes uninsulated, however, showed that the values of Q/Q0 so obtained did not vary by more than the experimental error from the values obtained with the unused electrodes insulated RESULTS The variation of relative productivity* with perforation density is shown for various penetration depths from 0 to 4.03 in. in Fig. 1. It will be seen that even one in. of penetration into the formation results in a huge increase in the relative productivity. Moreover, as-the depth of penetration increases, it becomes less and less advantageous to use large perforation densities, 80 pel. cent of open hole productivity being obtained with only three 0.5-in. diameter holes per foot when the penetration is 4.03 in.

IT has often been reported that coatings may strengthen single crystals and polycrystalline specimens of coarse grain size. This note reports the effect of a surface layer of fine grains on the creep-rupture properties of coarse grained nickel 99.8 pct pure. Sheet specimens were machined from cold-rolled material, finished by surface grinding and annealed at 1230°C in vacuum for 4 hr. Half of them were re-ground on faces and sides and annealed at 925"C for 1 1/4 hr. The double grind-anneal treatment produced a structure consisting of a surface layer of fine grains of 0.02 mm diam on a coarse-grained substrate of grains of 0.40 mm diam. Comparison with specimens which received only the single grind showed that the second grind-anneal did not alter the structure of the substrate. Several modifications were made in specimen design to eliminate erratic rupture behavior outside of the gage length. In the final design the gage section, oriented parallel to the rolling direction, was 1.00 in. long, 0.4 in. wide, and 0.0625 in. thick. End tabs were pinned in place. Although other configurations (welded end tabs, transverse orientation, and wider gage section) showed similar effects of a layer of fine grains, because of the erratic rupture behavior, only the data from the final design are reported here. Creep tests were performed at 650°C in air and in a vacuum of 10~5 mm Hg. Creep rates were measured from the movements of the lever arm. Since the broken sheet specimens could not be fitted together, elongations at fracture measured by means of gage marks, do not include the necked portions adjacent to the fracture. Results of the creep tests with and without the fine grained surface are given in Table I. An explanation for the lower strength in air than in vacuum has been proposed previously in terms of the reduction of crack propagation energy by gas adsorption.l In both environments the fine-grained layer produced a small decrease in minimum creep rate and, except for the shortest test in air, a substantial increase in rupture life. The elongation values at rupture, as they are measured here, do not demonstrate an appreciable effect of the grain structure but do show much smaller ductilities in air than in vacuum. Greater elongations maybe associated with the finegrained layer, however, especially in vacuum, in creep curves such as those in Fig. 1. Duplicate tests were not run to determine the re-producibility of the data. It is felt, however, that, in view of the consistent behavior, the prolongation of rupture life may be attributed to the effect of the fine-grained surface. In the data not reported be-

IT is only in recent years that substantial progress has been made in developing a physico-chemical picture of the solid state. The molecular concept, so useful in dealing with gases, was naturally carried over to the field of crystalline solids; it has resulted in the firm implanting of erroneous concepts that only now are being eradicated successfully. Two simply written and effective books on the subject are Crystal Chemistry by Stillwell1 and An Introduction to Crystal Chemistry by Evans.' A more complete treatment of the subject is available in a book by Wells.' The monograph by Hückel4 also touches on a subject most easily perceived by reference to the brief introduction by Bragg,5 that master of the field. These texts make it clear that while some solids are built of molecules, many are built of ions, others of atoms connected in the form of giant molecules, and still others of cations and electrons. The various lattices in which these entities are systematically arranged, the joint use of several of these entities, and the transitional character of some of the bonds make for the great variety of crystalline solids. The purpose of this paper is to point out a most important corollary of present views on the structure of solids. In this connection the classification of solids in Table I is helpful. Atomic crystals are those formed by the noble gases, e.g., helium and argon. They are soft, sublime at very low temperature, of very low specific gravities, and not encountered in ores. Molecular crystals are uncommon among inorganic materials, common among organic materials. Typical examples from both inorganic and organic fields are sulphur, iodine, naphthalene, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride. These crystals are soft and have low specific gravities; where the molecules are small, the sublimation temperature is low. Filament and sheet crystals are rare. They are typified by elemental selenium and elemental arsenic, respectively. Graphite and molybdenite come near being sheet crystals. These crystals are soft in some directions, tough in others, sublime at various temperatures. Diamantine crystals, typified by diamond, are very few in number, stable at high temperatures, and extremely hard. Ionic crystals are common. Most salts, acids, and alkalies belong in the two classes of ionic crystals; examples are rock salt, fluorite, calcite, and angle-site. The salts, acids, and alkalies that do not belong in these classes are more properly regarded as transitional between ionic crystals, framework crystals, and diamantine crystals, e.g., ice and quartz. Fiber crystals are relatively uncommon mineral-ogically speaking, but common in the fields of living processes. Examples are asbestos, silk, cellulose, and wool. Many fiber crystals are so little known even now that their crystallinity may be doubted. Layer crystals, among the more interesting and useful of solids, include a wide variety of substances

The progress made to date in the mineral dressing of complex Arkansas titanium ores is reported in this paper. Concentrates of rutile, a dioxide of titanium, were produced by treating a submarginal ore from the Magnet Cove Rutile Co., Inc., Magnet, Ark. The rutile recovery at present is 45 to 50 pct of the total TiO2 with the possibility of increased recovery with additional research. The work reported herein is part of a general study which will later include results of investigation of other titanium ore bodies in the Magnet, Ark., area. The fragile character of the rutile minerals, the softness of the gangue, the occurrence of pyrite and leucoxene, and the considerable proportion of extremely small size rutile in the presence of montmorillonite- and illite- type clays in the Magnet Cove open-pit mine are the important factors in the mineral dressing of this submarginal rutile ore.

A novel, highly sensitive, and reproducible nzetlzod for the determination of hydrogen in solid materials is presented. The procedure requires equilibration of the specimen with hydrogen gas, rapid quenching, and hot vacuum extraction of the dissolved gas with subse-quent quantitative analysis by mass spectroscopy. Good linearity is obtained for the Arrl~enius plots of the investigated metals. The advantages in the use of this method over that of Sieverts aye discussed. The solubility data for copper are in reasonable agveewzent with a considerable number of other inuestigations, wllile those fov silver are considerably lower than previously reported. The first known solubility data for gold are presented. Solubility equations and heats of MUCH of the data which are available on the solubility of hydrogen in various metals and alloys have been obtained by the classical Sieverts method.' The method involves the measurement of a decrease in pressure of a gas in a calibrated system, and the calculated contraction in volume is attributed to the solubility of the gas in the metal sample. The procedure requires several corrections, such as the solubility of the gas in the container walls and the diffusion of the gas through these walls, as noted by Steacie and .Johnson2 and others. In addition, errors may be incurred due to reactions between metal surface impurities, such as oxides, and the saturating gas. The precise calibration of the measuring system where large thermal gradients exist can present additional difficulties. Also, accurate volumetric measurements of small quantities of gas are difficult. Many of the objections to the Sieverts method were overcome on solid materials by Ransley and ~eufeld,~ who first saturated the metal with hydrogen and performed a subsequent extraction and measurement of the gas by chemical means. Eichenauer and pebler4 and Eichenauer, Kiinzig, and pebler5 measured the diffusion coefficient and solubility by following the degasification of a sample as a function of a rate of increase in pressure in a previously evacuated system. Here again, however, the procedure involves many of the corrections of the Sie-verts method. The present investigation deals with the solubility of hydrogen in solid copper, silver, and gold by a technique which eliminates many of the aforementioned corrections and possible errors. This procedure requires equilibration of the specimen with gas, rapid quenching, and hot vacuum extraction of the dissolved gas with subsequent quantitative analysis by mass spectroscopy. EXPERIMENTAL Two completely separate systems were employed to accomplish first, the equilibrium saturation of the sample and second, the extraction of the dissolved gas. Saturation Apparatus. The saturation apparatus, illustrated in Fig. l, consisted of a vertically mounted quartz tube with a three-way valve for vacuum or hydrogen near the top and an outlet near the bottom leading to a butyl phthalate seal. The bottom end of the tube was terminated with a joint accommodating an O-ring sealed "Asco Stirring Gland" (The Emil Greiner Co.). This gland facilitated movement of the thermocouple without introduction of air into the system. The upper portion of the tube (above the furnace) was water-jacketed. RECENT experiments have shown that the mar-tensite reaction in a standard tool steel is influenced by the history of the reacting austenite. The martensite reaction proceeds to a given extent at a higher temperature in austenite formed from an annealed spheroidal structure than it does in austenite formed from tempered martensite: that is to say, a prequench lowers the temperature range of the martensite reaction in this steel. Furthermore, a prequench alters the appearance of the martensite as compared to martensite formed from "virgin" austenite. The steel used for this work was a manganese nondeforming tool steel of the following composition: C, 0.85 pct; Mn, 1.43; Si, 0.23; Ni, 0.12; Cr, 0.59; and W, 0.59. A piece from a rolled bar was forged to Vz in. sq and annealed to a spheroidal structure. Disks 1/8 in. thick were used in the experiments. Several sets of the specimens were prepared and austenitized in lead at 1475°F. Three sets were held at 1475°F for 15 min, quenched in water, and immediately reheated to 1475°F. After this quench the three sets were held for 5 min, 30 min, and 3 hr, respectively, at 1475°F and then the individual specimens in each set were quenched in molten baths to 325", 300°, and 275ºF, respectively, and held for 15 sec. Immediately after the quenching treatments? the specimens were tempered at 600°F for 30 sec to darken the martensite and then were quenched in water. The holding times were short enough to avoid isothermal transformation. Three other sets of specimens were given the same final quenching treatments as the first three, but they were austenitized at 1475°F for 20 min, 35 min, and 3 hr and 15 min, respectively, without an intermediate water quench. The two individual specimens from each set were quenched together in order to eliminate quenching errors. Several experiments were run in this way but only the six sets referred to are described in detail because they all yielded essentially the same results. By means of the stated heat treatments the martensite reaction was investigated for: 1—austenite formed from an annealed structure, and 2— austenite formed from tempered martensite. The martensite reactions of the two types of austenite differed significantly. This is shown by Figs. 1 and 2. Comparison of the photographs on the left in Figs. 1 and 2 with those on the right shows that less martensite was formed by a quench to a given temperature from prequenched austenite than from austenite formed from an annealed structure, that is, the prequench suppressed the martensite reaction. The effect was observed for specimens austenitized 20 min, 35 min, and 3 hr and 15 min. A comparison of Figs. 1 and 2 shows that the martensite reactions in both sets of specimens occurred at lower temperatures with increased austenitization time. This was caused by the increased dissolution of residual carbides with time at 1475°F. However, the difference in amount of martensite formed in prequenched austenite as compared to virgin austenite was approximately the same for all three austenitization times. One further observation should be noted. The needles of the martensite formed from virgin austenite are somewhat longer on the average and show less of a tendency to cluster than those of martensite formed from prequenched austenite. This causes the martensite on the right in Figs. 1 and 2 to have a more acicular appearance than the martensite on the left. Since the sets of specimens used in this work were austenitized for identical total lengths of time and the effect of a prequench on the martensite reaction existed for specimens held at the austenitizing tem-

CERTAIN alloys of iron and nickel, when rolled and annealed, possess a preferred crystal orientation: (001) in the rolling plane and [loo] in the rolling direction, when recrystallized at 850" to 1050°C after approximately 98 pct cold reduction. Since the preferred orientation makes a direction of easiest magnetization coincide with the rolling direction, these alloys, especially a 50 pct iron in nickel alloy, have found wide application in the electrical industry' for choke coils and special types of transformers. The rate of the recrystallization reaction was studied at temperatures ranging from 500° to 600°C. The heat of activation for the reaction was calculated from the observed rates, and crystal orientation determinations were made before and after re-crystallization. A vacuum melted iron-nickel alloy* analyzing 49.6 pct nickel, 0.018 pct carbon, and 0.30 pct manganese was used for the experiments. The alloy was cold-rolled 98 pct into strips 1/2 in. wide by 0.002 in. thick. Specimens 1 in. long were sealed under a vacuum (approximately 10-8 mm Hg) in 1/2 in. ID pyrex glass tubes. For heat treatment these tubes were fastened to Nicrohm wires and submerged in a molten salt bath controlled to ±2°C. (The maximum measurement error was within 3°C.) The time at temperature was varied logarithmically from one sample to another, and runs were made at 500°, 525", 550" and 575°C. A molten lead bath was used for a run at 600°C which was controlled to the same accuracy. To determine the extent of recrystallization after a particular time at a given temperature, a method was used suggested by the work of Decker, Asp, and Harker.3,4 This method employs an X-ray spectrometer whereby X rays are diffracted from crystallites whose diffracting atom planes are parallel to the rolling plane of the specimen. The intensities of the diffracted rays are measured by a Geiger counter. The counter can be rotated through a range of angle, and can be motor driven through this range at a speed of 2" per min. The measured intensities are plotted vs. angle by a potentiometer recorder. In a 50 pct iron-nickel alloy it was found that only (200) reflections were obtained from the rolling plane with recrystallized material, and that only (220) reflections were obtained from the rolling plane with unrecrystallized material. No other reflections were obtained under these conditions over a range of Bragg angle of 0 to 45" using either type of specimen. As a consequence, the intensity of the (200) reflections from the rolling plane was taken to indicate the amount of recrystallized ma-terial present in a specimen, and the corresponding intensity of the (220) reflections was taken to indicate the amount of unrecrystallized material present. To insure flatness and proper alignment of the reflecting specimen in the spectrometer, the sample was laid in a slot 1/2 in. wide x 0.001 in. deep which was machined in a 3/4x2x1/2 in. steel carrier. The specimen then was taped down with cellophane tape. This steel cradle was mounted vertically in the specimen holder of the spectrometer so that the bottom edge of the carrier rested against a horizontal shoulder. Intensity data used in plotting the percent of recrystallized material vs. time at temperature were obtained by directly counting the diffracted beam of nickel filtered copper Ka radiation used throughout the work. The X-ray spectrometer was employed also in obtaining pole figure data to be used for orientation determinations. At the beginning of this investigation a transmission pole figure holder was used." As a thickness of 0.002 in. of this alloy was found to be opaque to the copper Ka radiation, it was necessary to reduce the thickness of the pole figure specimen. The uranium deposit of Gunnar Mines Ltd. is on south shore of Crackingstone Peninsula in the Beaverlodge area of northern Saskatchewan. The property spans St. Mary's Channel, a narrow waterway separating the mainland from a group of islands in Lake Athabasca. The mine property, consisting of 12 claims and 7 fractions, was staked in July 1952 by A. O. Zeemel and W. J. Blair. Diamond drilling commenced in the fall of that year and continued until the spring of 1954. In that interval, some 70,000 ft of drilling outlined an orebody plunging from the surface south-ward to a depth of 1000 ft below the shore of St. Mary's Channel. The last 9000 ft of drilling was through lake ice, and when this was interrupted by spring breakup, sufficient ore reserves had been established to warrant the present operation. Surface drilling was therefore terminated.

IN accordance with the custom of this society, we are gathered here, as we have every year since 1924, to honor the memory of the eminent American metallurgist and teacher, Professor Henry Marion Howe. Unlike many of the distinguished metallurgists who have preceded me as a Howe lecturer, I cannot bring to you reminiscences of his personality, for it was not my privilege to be associated with Professor Howe, or to be directly one of his students. Yet, Professor Howe and Professor Albert Sauveur, through the medium of their books, were my first teachers of metallography, as they have been of almost all American metallurgists of my generation. As a teacher, and for many years the acknowledged leader of American metallurgists, he exercised a profound influence in the growth of our science and was held in honor by the men of science of his time. I can speak no words of technical appreciation that will add luster to his fame, for by his prophetic vision, his teachings, and his researches he stands among the immortals in the memory of all metallurgists. In 1926, the third Howe Memorial Lecture was presented by Professor William Campbell' of Columbia University, who entitled it "Twenty-Five Years of Metallography." He took as a starting date for his chronology the turn of the century, which coincided with his arrival from England to work in association with Howe at the Columbia School of Mines. In that informative lecture Professor Campbell enumerated the important advances in metallography achieved during the first quarter of the century, and, it now appears, may have established the custom of reviewing such progress every twenty-five years. The scope of Professor Campbell's lecture was as broad as his metallurgical knowledge, for it embraced a wide portion of the field of metallography, both ferrous and nonferrous. Twenty-five years later, the Howe Memorial Lecture Committee saw fit to assign to me the honor of writing a lecture that would commemorate the work of Henry Marion Howe and would at the same time constitute the 25th anniversary of the lecture by Professor Campbell. The Committee suggested that this lecture might properly be called "Twenty-Five More Years of Metallography," a suggestion that I have adopted. I must confess, however, that I have not followed the precedent established by Campbell and have narrowed the scope of this lecture to an appraisal of those achievements which in my opinion have contributed most to the progress of microscopical metallography during the past twenty-five years. Progress in Metallography The metallographic methods most widely used today, with the exception of the electron microscope, were firmly established more than twenty-five years ago. In general, our specimens were prepared for microscopic examination in those days in much the same manner as they are today. It is true that new details of technique have been introduced from time to time, and that superior equipment is available today, but on the whole, these improvements have been in the nature of refinements, often a matter of personal preference, and none can be considered essential to the attainment of the ultimate goal of the art and science of metallography, which is to reveal the structure of metallic specimens with unequivocal clarity so that they may be interpreted correctly. Mechanical metallographic polishing, which was the only method available in 1926, is still universally practiced and still consists of abrading the metallic specimen with a series of abrasives of increasing fineness until a specular surface is attained. We have now the alternative method of electropolishing, but it is not widely used because, except in a few special cases, its results are inferior to those of competent mechanical polishing. Likewise, most of the etching reagents preferred today were in common use more than twenty-five years ago and were applied in the same manner as they are today. Valuable improvements have been made in the optical and mechanical performance of metallurgical microscopes, but there was no dearth in those days of excellent instruments equipped with achromatic and apochromatic objectives capable of yielding micrographs comparable in quality with the best that we can make today. In fact, it would be a difficult task for any metallographer today to make optical micrographs at magnifications in excess of 3000 diameters that would surpass those made by Lucas more than twenty-five years ago. One of these is shown in Fig. 1. Yet, it is unquestionable that on the whole, the micrographs appearing in the metallurgical literature today are vastly superior to those

THE CHAIRMAN (E. G. SPILSBURY, New York, N. Y.).-The relation of the character of manganese ore to the surrounding rocks was called to my attention very strikingly in a recent investigation in Costa Rica. In the foothills of the main coastal range there is a large deposit of manganese which extends for over 150 miles along the coast. This is in a porphyry district and the occurrences are almost exclusively along the lines of contact between a recent diorite intrusion through the porphyries. Wherever that intrusion appears to have exerted great force, the line of contact is very clear between the porphyries and the diorites. Where the action has been slower and the lifting force of the intrusion more gradual, there has been a zone of fracture of very considerable width. Those ores which occur where the fractured zone has not been very extensive carry a, lower percentage of manganese than where it has been deposited along a wider zone of fracture. In the so-called narrow veins, which are really the predominant ones, the solution carrying the manganese has evidently attacked the silica in the intrusive rock, and the resulting ore is practically a combination of manganese and silica, running froth 20 to 30 per cent. of manganese and from 20 to 40 per cent. of silica: hence those ores are not likely for a long time to become a factor in our manganese supply :for this country. On the other hand, where the disturbance to the porphyritic schist has been more intense; the manganese deposits are not so extensive, but the ore is richer, running from 45 to 51 and 52 per cent. manganese, with a silica content of from 4 to 5 per cent. There seems to be some resemblance in these deposits to those of the Cuyuna range. EDMUND NEWTON, Minneapolis, Minn.-The State Bureau of Mines has been working on the problem of concentrating manganiferous iron ore for two years or more. I should consider hand sorting as the best form of treatment, because it is practised at all of the mines which ship ore for making alloys, but not, however, oil the ore that is being used for pig iron. Hand sorting, assisted by selective mining, is readily applicable to some of this ore because the gangue is practically the original rock and is easily separated. However, it is only in rather limited zones that we find clean patches of rock. Generally the silica exists as a skeleton of the original rock structure, in which the manganese has been precipitated; some of the silica may have been dissolved, but if any of the original rock remains, the silica must be eliminated by ore-dressing processes.

Gloomy predictions that domestic mineral reserves are approaching exhaustion are unwarranted and may be harmful, this author contends. Specific mineral forecasting errors in the Paley Report are cited to support this contention, and steps that can be taken to insure a progressive mineral industry capable of keeping pace with the major raw material needs of the nation through advancing technology are suggested. Mining is both exciting and rewarding —although at times somewhat frustrating— and we all can have real pride in our industry, in its people, and in its accomplishments. It is, however, with concern that I have noted a deterioration in this Country in what might be called mining's stature and in the growth of a belief in many quarters that our mineral reserves are rapidly approaching exhaustion. In other words, there is a popular image that we are fast becoming a "have not" nation in many respects and that the domestic mining industry can no longer be considered, in the vernacular of Wall Street to offer much in the way of "growth potential." I do not subscribe to this hypothesis, nor do I be-li4ve that the record of the mining industry bears this out. However, let me add that we can, in time, talk ourselves into this frame of mind and we can hasten the day when this very well might come about by unnecessary and unwise legislation or regulation. My remarks today are basically designed to give my reasons for refuting this negative philosophy and to review our record. With your help, I know we can improve our image, and the public's recognition of our industry's peculiar problems. The progress of our civilization over the centuries has been fundamentally based upon proper use of raw materials, both agricultural and mineral, and upon energy, human or otherwise. As the standard of living has progressed century by century, the demands for mineral raw materials have increased in an irregular, but steadily rising progression. Fortunately, those minerals on which we depend most, i.e., iron, coal, petroleum, copper, aluminum, lead, and zinc have been neither too difficult to find nor to process into useful form. Iron, the most useful of all metals, is present in various amounts in most rock types and soils. Gold, seemingly the most generally desired (but certainly not the most useful of all metals), occurs in sea water in a far greater total tonnage than has been won from all of the world's known gold mines. If the latter is true, then why do we not see large installations treating sea water for the recovery of its gold content? The answer, of course, is that even the French, who seem, from their recent actions, to value gold above all else, have not devised a way of doing this at a profit. Theoretically, it is possible, but not with today's technology at a cost which would justify the effort. Man has exploited only those mineral concentrations which accidents of nature have placed within his so far limited means of finding and utilizing. What we geologists and engineers refer to as an orebody is nothing more than a concentration of minerals, exploitable with available knowledge, that will yield a value greater than the value attached to the energy and capital required to produce it. What is "ore" and what is not "ore" is, in the end, a matter of economics. The economic problem stems from the physical and chemical character of mineral deposits. The good Lord stacked the cards heavily in favor of rising costs by limiting the amount of the higher grade ores easily available. As the best and most accessible ores are depleted, it becomes necessary to work harder and with greater ingenuity to produce more from less accessible and lower grade resources. The quantity of mineral raw materials we can have in the future will be determined largely by what we can afford to pay for them in terms of human effort, capital outlay and production energies. We will always have the problem of cost with us and our only real means of keeping ahead of rising costs is by continually improving our technical abilities. We, in this country at least, no longer have open to us large and unexplored virgin wildernesses in which a pick-and-shovel prospector might uncover an untouched mineral bonanza. The rest of the world also has few conventional frontiers left in which the explorer-prospector is free to roam. We do, however, have enormous land areas unexplored, and untouched po-

INTRODUCTION Union Carbide is currently operating an in-situ leach project on the Palangana Dome area in Duval county. This deposit meets all the requirements for in-situ leach in that the ore (1) is below the water table, (2) is in a permeable horizon, (3) is amenable to chemical leaching, and (4) is confined by impervious layers. This project has been under commercial production since 1976, and its capacity has been expanded on three occasions since going on-stream. Recently, additional uranium reserves were discovered on the Rogers-Cardenas (R-C) property about 32 km north of the Palangana operation. The ore is located within the Oakville sands and its characteristics are quite similar to those of the ore at Palangana. Both are an unconsolidated Arkosic sand high in clay and calcium carbonate. The R-C ore, however, is somewhat coarser with a mean particle size of 0.15 mm as compared to a mean particle size of 0.07 mm for the Palangana ore. In all respects it would appear that this ore would be a candidate for in-situ leach as a satellite operation to Palangana. Unfortunately, R-C ore is above the water table and, therefore, not amenable to the Palangana practice. Because of the limited known reserves in this deposit, it is readily apparent that conventional mining and milling are out of the question. However, because of its proximity to our Palangana operation, it seemed worthwhile to consider other options. The most viable route based on our past experience was to heap leach the ore. Our recent success at our Gas Hills facility and our Maybell operation, in employing a heap leach practice to our marginal reserves seemed to be a logical approach for processing this ore. Our experiences at both locations are described in "Heap Leaching - A Case History" by R. G. Woolery et al., Mining Engineering, March 1978. In both instances the process is an acid leach circuit and acid consumption averages 20 kg/t H2SO4. A preliminary feasibility study showed that because of the high strip ratio required for the R-C project to be successful, additional ore reserves must be located and that a method of heap leaching with an alkaline circuit would have to be developed. As a result of this paper study, the decision was made to proceed with a program of additional exploration drilling to determine the total ore reserves that could be mined economically. The Mining Department will evaluate each ore zone for cutoff grade, strip ratio, and expected mining cost. At the same time, a laboratory program to evaluate the available core samples for amenability to heap leaching with respect to an estimate of uranium recovery and processing costs was developed. This program is currently in progress, and at this time, we are just completing our process amenability study. BENCH-SCALE EVALUATION OF THE R-C ORE The initial bench-scale slurry leach tests on the R-C ore showed an acid consumption in excess of 200 kg/t H2SO4. These data, of course, discouraged us from considering this process route. Not only would the acid cost be prohibitive, but the gypsum generated by the reaction of the sulfuric acid with the calcium carbonate of the ore would severely effect the percolation of the lixivant. For this reason, the laboratory program was directed toward an alkaline circuit compatible with heap leaching. Because of the proximity of the R-C property to our Palangana operation, it seemed advisable to integrate the processing of this ore into the production at Palangana. Doing so would enable us to bring the R-C property into production by merely enlarging our present facilities at Palangana; otherwise, construction of a grass roots plant would be necessary. Ideally, the simplest method would be to construct the heaps at Palangana and employ an ammonium carbonate/bicarbonate leachant compatible with the in-situ production liquor. The product liquors could then be co-mingled or processed separately as desired. To determine if this goal was practical, samples of the R-C ore were obtained, and a laboratory program initiated. Heap leach amenability testing consisted of preliminary bench-scale evaluation to determine optimum solution strength and ultimate uranium recovery, followed by small column tests to confirm the bench-scale metallurgy and to determine percolation characteristics. These bench-scale tests are being followed by pilot-scale testing approximating field conditions. As expected, the bench-scale tests showed that the dissolution rate is considerably slower for alkaline leach than has been our experience in acid leaching. Because of the slower reaction rates, product liquor grades will be lower than for acid, as greater volumes of solution are required for satisfactory uranium extractions. The greatest influence on reaction times found in the laboratory was the carbonate/bicarbonate strength and oxidant addition. However, the higher salt concentration reduced the efficiency of the IX resin circuit and about 25g/L salt proved to an upper limit compatible with subsequent IX treatment. The oxidant contributed significantly to the early extraction rate but seemed to have only minimal effect on the total practical U308 extracted or the time required to achieve it. This variable will require larger scale testing to determine if the added cost of the oxidant is actually justifiable. Thus, the small-scale laboratory slurry tests, based on the 0.088% U308 sample available, indicate that leaching at 25g/L ammonium carbonate/bicarbonate, with or without oxidant, we might expect an 80-85% U308 extraction on this ore.

If chemical mining is to work, it is extremely important to watch heat balances. Some reactions with coal give off heat and others absorb heat. The reactions of coal with oxygen or air give off heat, but the reactions of coal with steam or with carbon dioxide absorb heat. By balancing the proportions of the two types of reactions, the energy of the coal can be almost completely recovered and environmental damage is minimized. The chemical reactions are listed in Table 1 in the usual form with subscripts (s) and (g) indicating solid or gaseous materials. In reaction 1, solid corbon, C(s), reacts with gaseous oxygen, O2(g), to produce gaseous carbon dioxide, CO2 (g). H means enthalpy or available heat in the material; F is free energy, and it measures whether the reaction can go at all, and if so, how much.

This paper outlines the trends in gold production since the discovery of America, in the world as a whole, and in the principal producing regions as well. World production climbed at an average rate of about 20,000,000 oz. per 5-year period until the record all-time output of 111,307,000 oz. in the period ending with 1915. Production fell off during the war period, but has been mounting since 1925, and will probably be nearly 100,000,000 oz. for the 5-year period ending in 1930. Total world production of gold from 1492 to the end of 1930, as closely as can be determined, is more than 1,061,000,000 fine ounces. More than one-half of this total, or about 575,000,000 oz., has been mined since 1900. In percentage of world production, the United States jumped from 4.8 per cent for the decade 1831-1840 to 44.5 per cent for the five years ending with 1855. This is the highest figure ever reached by this country, although, with the exception of the 10-year period ending 1865, it ranked first among the nationa from 1849 until the end of 1905. During the 5-year period ending with that year, the United States produced 24.7 per cent of the world's gold. The tremendous increase from South Africa following 1890 resulted in that country's becoming the largest contributor for the five years 1906-1910, a position it has held with increasing dominance ever since. Relegated to second place in the period 1906 to 1910, the United States produced nearly 20 per cent of the world's new gold until 1920. From 1921 to 1925 it averaged 13.6 per cent and since then it has continued to decline in relative importance, accounting for only 10.9 per cent in 1927. Final figures for 1930 may place Canada second among the gold producers of the world.

Bentonite, designating a distinct type of clay, is a young name in mineral nomenclature in the light of the age-old names of most other useful nonmetallics. The earliest references in literature are to "soap clay" (1873) "taylorite" (1888) and finally "bentonite" in 1897, from its occurrence in the Fort Benton series of rocks near Rock Creek, Albany County, Wyoming. Bentonite is a rock term and consists largely of montmorillonite clay. The latter name was proposed in 1847 for a plastic clay found at Montmorillon, France. A clay of apparently identical properties was described by Cronstedt of Sweden in 1788 and a number of other similar clays found in France were given other names in publications from 1853 to 1856. The mineral name montmorillonite was recognized by Dana in 1892. The recognition of "clay mineral" distinctions which led to the present-day classifications of clays by their chief mineral content, dawned in the early part of the twentieth century. Grim6 has aptly said: About 1924, Ross10 and some colleagues of the U. S. Geological Survey began a study of the mineral composition of clays that led to a series of monumental papers on the subject. By the early 1930's what has come to be known as the clay-mineral concept became firmly established in the minds of a great many people actively studying clay materials. The clay mineral concept designates the major clays as kaolins, montmorillonites and illites and by this concept bentonites are now defined as "fine-grained clays containing not less than 85 pct montmorillonite" and a wide variety of clays found all over the world are included in that classification. They could all properly be called "montmorillonite clays" but the common commercial name is bentonite. For a period of over forty years from the time of the earlier discoveries, bentonite was thought to be only the sodium type highswelling clay produced principally in Wyoming. By the clay mineral concept, non-swelling montmorillonite clays also became known as bentonite. In the trade there are two broad divisions-sodium bentonite, often called Wyoming or "western," which expands in water and carries sodium as its predominant exchangeable ion, and calcium bentonite often called "southern," which has negligible swelling and carries calcium as its principal exchangeable ion. There are many intermediate gradations. Properties The mineralogy and chemistry of the clays are so complex that the subject cannot be summarized briefly. The reader is referred to Chapter 12 of this volume in which the subject is treated at some length. Grim6 gave the formula for montmorillonite as (OH)4Si8AL4020.nH2O. He wrote: Montmorillonite is composed of units made up of two silica tetrahedral sheets with a central alumina octahedral sheet. . . . Exchangeable rations occur between the silicate layers. . . . The words "tetrahedral" and "octahedral" refer to the coordination number of the cations in the unit cell in the crystallographic lattice. Carroll5a stated: That the montmorillonite structure is the same as that of mica, but the layers are not held together by K+ ions; and water and other polar molecules, such as organic molecules, can enter between the unit layers and cause expansion. When brasses containing from 61 to 62.5 per cent. copper are very rapidly cooled from temperatures near their melting point to below 0" C., unusual results are obtained. These results are quite unexplainable from a consideration of the old copper-zinc constitutional diagram but they can be satisfactorily explained by means of the diagram revised by Genders and Bailey1 (Fig. 1). Experiments on a 60/40 Brass If an alloy containing 60 per cent. copper is heated to any temperature between approximately 760' C. and its melting point, it will consist entirely of beta. Upon slowly cooling, alpha will start to separate just below 760" C. Since this alpha will contain nearly 65 per cent, copper, the beta will be impoverished by its separation. As the temperature decreases the composition of the separating alpha will approach approximately 61 per cent. and the beta in contact with the alpha will maintain an equilibrium composition approaching 54.5 per cent. copper. If the rate of cooling is extremely slow, especially at the lower temperatures, stable equilibrium will be established by diffusion through the alpha and beta so that eventually 85 per cent. of the alloy will consist of alpha containing 61 per cent. copper, while 15 per cent. will be beta containing 54.5 per cent. copper. With a faster cooling rate diffusion cannot keep apace and the constituents will be cored, the alpha varying from 65 to 61 per cent. copper and the beta from 60 to 54.5 copper. In this case the amount of alpha will be less than 85 per cent. and the beta will be increased correspondingly. The general structure thus obtained is illustrated in Fig. 2. When a more rapid rate of cooling is effected by quenching in water, the alloy is retained largely in the beta form. However, the crystals of beta are usually outlined with dark fringes which at high magnifications are found to be very fine alpha-beta structures almost martensitic in appearance. D EC. 20-The spirit of Christmas and good will toward men has managed a few brief appearances on the front pages, welcome relief from man's usual ill-will toward man. A couple politicos did their best to brighten the scene by well-publicized romances. There was a general exodus to Florida to patch up nervous systems, and even the UNO quieted down as Mr. Vyshinsky departed for home via Eastern Germany. Before going he opened up a preliminary bombardment for the worldwide "communist peace offensive," and it is now the duty of the 600 million (according to the Cominform) ideological converts to press home the attack. In Washington, Mr. Lilienthal resigned as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and demonstrated again the difficulty of government to retain the services of capable men. The President has yet to appoint another victim- possibly someone nicely noncontroversial and timid. So might the critics be appeased, but it would bode ill for the rapid exploitation of peaceful uses of atomic energy, the relaxation of excessive secrecy, wider sharing of developmental work with friendly nations and possible revision of the Acheson-Lilienthal proposals for inter- national control of the atomic bomb.

Prof. Henry M. Howe, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*):—The results presented in Mr. Mathewson's paper are of very great interest. Perhaps the most interesting is that shown in Table I. and Fig. 1, in which the arsenic decreases in 10 min. from 0.22 to 0.07 per cent. This is such a large decrease that it is to be hoped that Mr. Mathewson will verify it by repeating his tests with a matte of similar composition. This is particularly to be desired, because the simultaneous removal of sulphur appears to be very small. All three blows further agree in showing that the removal of arsenic is in the very early part of the blow. The fact that the removal of arsenic then ceases abruptly cannot be explained completely by the fact that the arsenic has fallen so low as by its lowness to resist further removal, because in the first blow the arsenic becomes stationary at 0.06 per cent., whereas in the third blow it does not become stationary until it has fallen to 0.034 per cent. The abrupt ending of the removal of arsenic is more likely to find its explanation in the composition of the slag, and it is to be hoped that Mr. Mathewson will supplement these extremely valuable data with others in which the composition of the slag at the same time shall be given. The sudden rise of arsenic toward the end of the third blow I suppose must be referred to an error in sampling or analysis.
