The organization and purpose of the War Minerals Committee was explained in a special war notice in the-August Bulletin. The first work of this Committee is to secure and condense information as to the relative importance of different properties from the standpoint of domestic mineral production. When the possibilities of ore deposits are known, involving, in some cases, further examination through the voluntary services of, Engineers and Geologists, then the necessary policy required to stimulate such development can be determined. Proper recommendation has been and will be made to .the various agencies controlling the situation during the war. This will insure a complete presentation of the needs of the situation. Every legitimate effort will be made to stimulate the production of domestic minerals and to put the industries on a permanent basis. The following information forms indicate the type of information required by the Committee. Engineers and Geologists can assist in one of several ways in furnishing information to the War Minerals Committee:

A SPECIAL meeting arranged by the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 21 and 22, in the Assembly Room of the American Annex Hotel, St. Louis, Mo. Preceding the first session on Tuesday morning, the members and guests were registered and presented with the usual Institute badges. The morning session was opened at 10:30 by Ralph Arnold of Los Angeles, Calif., Chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee. In his opening remarks, he suggested that the petroleum section specialize more and more on the technical problems of the oil industry and that an effort be made to enlarge the membership of the Institute among the technical men of the industry. The following program was presented : OIL FIELDS OF RUSSIA, by A. Beeby Thompson and T. G. Madgwick, of London, England. Presented by H. A. Wheeler; discussed by Arthur Knapp and R. VanA. Mills. This most comprehensive paper was one of what is hoped to be a series to be presented by some of our foreign members. It is by far the best description in English of the world-famous Baku and other fields of Russia.

THE session* on Non-ferrous Metallurgy held Monday morning was conducted in a most satisfactory manner with F. F. Colcord, vice-president, U. S. Smelting Co., in the chair. In spite of the early hour and the fact that members desired to register first, the meeting started quite promptly, with almost every chair in the room occupied. About 65 men were present and during the morning many more came but, not being able to find room, drifted away to other fields of activity. The first paper presented, "Lead Refining Practice of the Bunker Hill Smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co.," by Alfred F. Beasley (T. P. 303), was read in abstract by Edward H. Robie, and an animated discussion followed in which Messrs. Johnson (written discussion), Brewer and Jones and Professor Hayward participated. The discussion hinged principally on the liquation of the zinc crusts, but Professor Hayward called attention to the fact that the practice of keeping the gold and silver crusts separate was not new and the present scheme illustrated the axiom that processes based on fundamental principles should not be considered as extinct; one can never tell when it may be found advantageous to make use of them again.

TWENTY years ago, W. T. Burns, in his paper presented at the Butte Meeting of the Institute, discussed the general scheme then in use in the electrolytic copper refinery of the Anaconda Copper Mining. Co. at Great Falls, Mont., for removing impurities from tank-room electrolyte and controlling its acid content. Since then marked changes have taken place in copper-refinery practice at Great Falls. The electrolytic copper refinery in use in 1913 has been replaced by a new and entirely modern plant capable of producing up to 27,000,000 lb. of cathode copper per month. With the building of the new plant in 1916, the treatment of converter anodes was discontinued. At first the substitution of refined anodes for converter anodes resulted in a decrease in the impurity content of the anodes, but as time went on, changes in metallurgical practices at the smelter resulted in substantial increases in the impurity content of the anodes. The leaching of the silver slime to remove copper before shipment to Raritan for treatment further added to the purification problem. The fact that the scheme of purifying electrolyte which Mr. Burns described in his paper' has proved adequate for our needs under a wide variation of conditions speaks well for its essential soundness.

Meetings of this committee were held at the Institute headquarters on April 18, May 2 and 15, and June 19. At the meeting of June 19, the Secretary reported that letters of invitation to apply for membership in the Institute had been sent to all the alumni of the School of Mines of Columbia University and also to all State Mine Inspectors and their deputies. He also reported the securing of lists of the alumni of the Harvard Engineering Schools, and of the Mining Schools at Houghton, Mich. ; Butte, Mont. ; State College, Pa.. ; Seattle, Wash.; Fayetteville, Ark. Laramie, Wyo.; Montreal, Canada, and Worcester and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institutes. Arrangements were made to invite all these to join the Institute. It. was suggested that a member of the Institute resident in Australia be appointed to this Committee, also one from Japan. Attention of the members of the Committee was drawn to the fact that letters requesting others to join the Institute will be written in the offices of the Institute if desired. The following is an attempt to form a formula by which a mine can be quickly evaluated, aft,er all pertinent physical data have been collected from observations on the ground by a competent mining engineer. M. S. Fisher and D. R. F. West (Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, England)—It may be of value to compare certain features of the results recorded in this very interesting paper with those of an investigation11 involving determinations of temperature gradients and rates of solidification of steel blocks of 3 in. sq section, cast horizontally in sand molds, some of which contained chills. Castings in plain carbon steels containing up to 0.8 pct C were made and, throughout this range of compositions, both inverse-rate and direct cooling curves, obtained from thermocouples placed within the mold cavity, showed a major arrest, the temperature of which was taken as the "effective liquidus" for the particular steel in question, solidifying under the conditions of the investigation. At the completion of the arrest, the curves showed a comparatively rapid de- crease in temperature. Some of the steels investigated lay within the peritectic region, and a second arrest at 1485°C was detected. In Fig. 15, which shows the effective liquidus temperatures, the limit of the 8 + liquid field has been placed at approximately 0.5 pct C. In inverse-rate curves corresponding to the thermal center of each casting, there was always a discontinuity, viz: an abrupt change of slope, at a temperature about 10 to 20°C below the "liquidus arrest," after which there seemed to be no significant irregularity in the rate of cooling. Curves corresponding to other positions in the casting generally showed some irregularities below the main arrest, probably as a result of heat flow from the solidifying interior. Even the reproducible discontinuity in the curves for the central positions appeared to have no theoretical or practical significance, though it probably corresponded to a stage in the solidification process at which only a relatively small amount of interdendritic liquid remained. The Park City mining-district is distinctively a camp of few properties, 5,000 acres, or one-third of the entire district, being under the management of but three companies. As a rule, the ore-bodies lie deep, with no outcrop, except where erosion has formed the deeper canyons and gulches. Ontario canyon exposed the famous Ontario ledge, and Woodside gulch showed the first ore of the Silver King Coalition mine. The Quincy ore-bodies were first brought to light in upper Empire canyon, and Thaynes canyon was instrumental in aiding the prospector during the early days of the camp. There are 22 shafts which have reached a depth of at least 500 ft., ten a depth of 1,000 ft., five a depth of 1,300 ft., and two a depth of 2,000 ft. The amount of lateral development has been proportiorlally extensive, including six long tunnels, four of which are in 3 miles, with a fifth now being driven. The Ontario lower drain-tunnel is now more than 4 miles long. The formations are sedimentary, dipping about 30° NW. and N., and traversed by many fissures, dikes, and faults. The principal ore-bodies are found. associated either with the contact of the basal Ontario quartzite and the overlying limes, or on a quartzite stratum within the limes, or in the fissures, or along some of the porphyry dikes. The district covers the intersection of the Uintah and Wasatch ranges, which explains the existence of large folds and faults, and fissures of great length, width, and depth. In a general way, the geology of the district consists of a basal quartzite dome, which has been exposed by erosion at the Ontario property. The Ontario fissure lies entirely within this formation. 1. Brinell tests at progressively increasing temperatures are given for a representative lead-base and a representative tin-base babbitt, showing that the former has superior resistance to deformation at the working temperatures of bearings. 2. Small squares of bearing bronze, tinned and then babbitted with a representative lead-base babbitt and a representative tin-base babbitt were subjected to compressive loading. The lead-base babbitt showed less average compression than the tin-base babbitt. Compression did not materially increase the Brinell hardness of the babbitts. 3. A process and a tool are described for giving smoother and more accurate surfaces to bearings than has heretofore been possible. The following experiments have recently been carried out in the chemical laboratory of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. While the work is incomplete, it is described at the present time because data on the comparative merits of lead-base and tin-base babbitts are of interest in connection with the present shortage of tin. BRinell Habdness of Babbitt at Increasing Temperatures Bearings fail because of wiping, or deformation. Hence tenacity is desirable in a bearing metal, especially tenacity at high temperatures. The Brinell test is commonly regarded as a measure of tenacity. In fact, it has recently been proposed to substitute for Brinell hardness number the expression " tenacity number."l It seemed, therefore, that the Brinell test was especially adapted for the tests described. Disks, 4 in. (101 mm.) in diameter and 1.5 in. (38 mm.) thick, were made of the babbitts to be studied, designated A, B, C. They were poured into metal molds, pyrometer leads being soldered in the center of each disk. The composition of the babbitts was as follows:

IT is twenty years since the writer made his first molybdenum steels and others were making them commercially five years earlier but the prevailing opinion seems to be that molybdenum steels are new; from time to time the daily press speaks of important discoveries in Europe and intimates that American steel makers have much to learn in regard to alloy steels. The earlier experiments were largely confined to the use of relatively high percentages of molybdenum in tool steels and permanent magnet steels. Recent developments deal with the types of alloy structural steels used for airplane, automobile, and other engineering requirements; in these, the molybdenum content is usually less than 1 per cent. The earlier types generally have been unsuccessful commercially, but the newer types of steels are becoming of increasing importance. The war showed our dependence on foreign sources for alloying metals; molybdenum alone is widely distributed in the United States and seemingly abundant. Many deposits are not now of commercial interest, owing to location and relatively small amount of ore available, but other deposits are being developed and a stable source of supply seems well assured. In tool and magnet steels, it was early found that 1 part of molybdenum was equivalent to from 2 to 2.5 parts of tungsten. The permanent magnet steels investigated by Madame Curie,1 in 1898, contained from 3.36 to 4.05 per cent. molybdenum; in 1902, Dr. E. L. French and the writer thoroughly tested steels containing from 2:0 to 4.0 per cent. These steels gave satisfactory tests for permanence, but were low in residual density and much more sensitive to hardening than the corresponding tungsten products. We discontinued work with them, therefore, and have no advice that such steels have been used commercially here or abroad.

INTRODUCTION Almost seventy-five years ago problems in the recovery of sulfides from then designated slime fractions were the impetus for the development of flotation. The fall-off in recovery by gravity methods below about 200-mesh, and the shift from coarser vein deposits to more disseminated ores, particularly for copper, provided the background for flotation's rapid advances. Although the ensuing years have witnessed major improvments both in flotation reagents and in flotation machines, many problems are still with us. And since, with the exception of the unique leaching of chalcocite ores at Inspiration, flotation is still the exclusive mainstay for primary recovery of all base metal sulfides, the solution of these problems as they arise is vital to the well-being of the mining industry. Before considering the problems themselves, it will be useful to review the current status of sulfide flotation in the United States. The last comprehensive survey by the Bureau of Mines in 1975 (1) showed sulfide ore tonnages treated from 1960 to 1975 as summarized in Table 1; Table 2 gives similar data for the flotation of all non-sulfide ores. Noteworthy is the leveling off in sulfide ore tonnages in 1970-1975, with a probable further decline in the past three years, and the sharp drop in the number of plants floating sulfide ores. In contrast, the tonnages of non-sulfide ores floated, as well as the number of individual plants, has continued to increase. In spite of these trends, two-thirds of the total tonnage of the ores to which flotation is applied is still represented by sulfides. Average grades of sulfide ores in 1975 were: about 0.6 percent for copper; near 5 percent for lead; and near 3 percent for zinc. Recoveries averaged in the low 80's for copper; about 95 percent for

REVISION of the United States mining law is needed. chiefly because of the following reasons: 1. The conceptions as to the characteristics of orebodies that were held at the time the statute of 1872 was enacted have since proved to be in many respects erroneous. 2. The operation of the existing law has been found to work unnecessary hardship upon many claimants to mineral land. 3. The existing statute fails in large degree to encourage development of mineral resources. 4. The existing law often produces conflict between placer and lode-claim rights, working unnecessary injustice to placer claimants. 5. The methods of establishing the rights of locators on United States mineral land are defective, and are not uniform throughout the States within which such lands exist. LAW OF THE APEX The objections to the so-called "law of the apex" are so well known as to require no detailed statement. It is sufficient to point out that the apex rule was based upon the notion that ore deposits consisted of well-formed veins included between definite walls, like the slice of ham in a sandwich. The fact is that veins conforming to that simple type are rare. Irregularity is the rule, and the chief metal production of the United States comes from masses which bear no resemblance to the tabular form of vein. Manifestly the law of the apex fails completely in such cases. Moreover, the tendency is constantly toward the exploitation of ores of lower grade than could formerly be worked, and such deposits exist mainly in the form of large irregular impregnated zones and masses, so that the future. development of our mineral resources would be continuously embarrassed by shadowy claims to extra-lateral rights by the locators of so-called apexes

Three Fe-18 pet Ni-base ternary alloys cortaining carbon, molybdenum, or cobalt were aged to pgroduce hardening by carbides, Ni3Mo, or ordering, respectively. Each alloy was tested in rotating-beam fatigue tests after hardening to 195 ksi ultim.ate tensile strength. The fatigue properties of three alloys soere essentially identical. The results suggest that tlze fatigae strength of an igron-base alloy should depend primarily upon the tensile strength, and not iipon the hardening mecaanisrn. THE fatigue strengths of many steels have been found to be directly related to their ultimate tensile strengths. For ultimate strengths below 200 ksi, the fatigue endurance limit at 107 to 10' cycles is approximately half the ultimate strength. Essen- tially all of the steels that have been tested, however, have been hardened by carbon. Thus it is not certain whether the relationship between fatigue and ultimate strengths is a general one that applies for other types of hardening in steels, or whether it applies only for the particular method of hardening by carbon. The recent developments of the martensitic precipitation-hardened stainless steels and the marag-ing steels have shown that it is possible to achieve high strengths in iron-base alloys by other hardening mechanisms than that due to carbon. Therefore, it is now possible to compare the fatigue properties of several iron alloys having the same ultimate strengths but hardened by different mechanisms. For the present study a binary Fe-18 pct Ni martensite was selected as a base material. This particular matrix composition has been found to have deformation characteristics very similar to pure iron.' Three ternary alloys were prepared by adding either 0.23 wt pct C, 5 wt pct Mo, or 20 wt pct Co to this base composition. After suitable heat

Studies of the adsorption of dialkyldithiocarbamates at the surfaces of galena and sphalerite have shown that characteristic contact angles are obtained at galena surfaces in the 7-10 pH range, whereas lower angles are obtained at unactivated sphalerite surfaces even at pH 71 Further, the angles at sphalerite surfaces progressively decrease with increase in pH. However, when sphalerite is activated with cupric sulfate, characteristic contact angles are obtained at pH 7 and beyond. This shows that galena and sphalerite can be selectively floated with dithiocarbamate collectors at pH 7 and beyond. Experimental Materials Ore: The lead-zinc ore for the present study was obtained through the courtesy of the Geological Survey of India from Dariba, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. The average ore analyzed 15.5% lead, 11.6% zinc, 6.7% iron, 15.6% sulfur and 36.6% acid insolubles. The ore was crushed in a Denver laboratory rod mill and sieved in a Denver automatic sieve shaker to obtain a -200- to +250-mesh (Tyler standard) fraction. This particular size was chosen because it was conducive to good liberation of sulfide minerals, both from one another and from gangue minerals. Collectors: Dimethyl, diethyl, diisopropyl and diisobutyl dithiocarbamates were prepared and purified by the methods described by Klopping and Van der Kerk.2 A freshly prepared 0.03% dithiocarbamate solution in distilled water was used for flotation studies. Frother: A 0.03% solution of pine oil in ethyl alcohol was employed. Activator: 7.3 g of cupric sulfate pentahydrate were dissolved in 1 1 of water and used for the activation of sphalerite. Depressant: 16.0 g of zinc sulfate heptahydrate were dissolved in 1 1 of water and used for the depression of sphalerite.

THE Eastern Magnetite Industry produced approximately 7,850,000 long tons of crude ore in 1945 from which was obtained approximately 3,650,000 long tons of shipping product or a ratio of 2.10 to 1. Lack of skilled or experienced miners was the greatest handicap. Veterans returning to work improved the underground labor shortage in some localities but as a whole the labor shortage was keenly felt throughout the industry. One cannot now predict what may be accomplished in 1946 but barring major steel strikes a worthwhile improvement can be expected. At the Richard mine of the Richard Ore Co., the shipping product for the year amounted to approximately 124,650 long tons of concentrate and lump ore. Crude-ore production was 160,600 long tons. The average analysis for lump ore was 63 per cent iron and for concentrates 66.05 per cent. The Warren Foundry and Pipe Corp. at their Mt. Hope mine produced 73,000 long tons of lump ore averaging 59.5 per cent and 57,000 long tons of concentrate averaging 67 per cent. The total mine hoist was approximately 209,000 long tons. Operations were commenced through the new Leonard shaft on Jan. 18; the Brown shaft through which operations had been conducted since 1912 caved beyond repair on Sept. 26. No one was injured but pumping facilities were somewhat disrupted. In order to reach designed capacity a total of 400 men will be required with 300 underground. Due to shortage of labor all operations in 1945 were concentrated on the 1700 level. As fast as men can be hired and trained development of the 2100 and 2500 levels will commence. Mt. This paper summarizes the results of laboratory tests conducted to determine the properties of the paraffin or rod-wax encountered in the Salt Creek field, Wyoming. It also describes field tests and methods employed to cope with the paraffin problem. The conclusions to bo drawn from the laboratory work are: 1. Samples of Salt Creek paraffin range in consistency from soft lo hard, the melting points varying from 120" to 156" V. 2. Masses of soft paraffin are soluble to an appreciable extent in crude oil and its liquid fractions at temperatures somewhat below the melting point of the paraffin. Hard paraffin is very slightly soluble. under these conditions. 3. Agitation apparently increases the amount of paraffin that will go into solution. 4. Paraffin congeals from solutions upon cooling to the point of saturation ation, which is in all cnscs below thc melting point of the paraffin. 5. Crutltl oil is tlie most effective. of all the solvents for holding paraffin in solution. 6. Pressure alone does not appreciably affect the solubility of paraffin in crude oil nor does it aid materially in holding paraffin in solution when the temperature is reduced. 7. Natural gas in solution under pressure does not appreciably increase the solubility of paraffin in crude oil, hut is effective in holding paraffin in solution when the temperature is reduced. 8. A foreign body introduced into a solution of paraffin in oil is imrnediately coated with paraffin if the temperature of the solution is at or below the melting point of the paraffin, and the object is considerably cooler than the solution. It may not be entirely correct to ray that paraffin is taken into solution; it is impossible that the paraffin may be in suspension rather than in solution.

IN ATTEMPTING to summarize briefly the reconstruction of the Hecla plant since the fire, three important facts must be held in mind; namely: a hurry-up job with the shadow of an insurance company in the background; restriction of working space in the narrow Burke Canyon; and building two-thirds of the plant on a filled area. Construction work was carried on without interruption through the winter season. These adverse conditions have contributed many obstacles not ordinarily encountered in mining work. The first problems immediately after the fire were organization and policy; the-former to create an efficient construction crew out of a mining organization; the latter to determine the type and extent of surface plant to be built. The new crew was organized from a nucleus of mine employees, 25 per cent. of the old crew remaining for construction work. Permanent fireproof buildings were decided upon, the general arrangement of the new plant to be similar to the old one as far as possible, at the same time enlarging it 100 per cent. in anticipation of the demands which would be made upon it when the Star Mine began operating. Cleaning up the wreckage was a big job, the extent of which is indicated by the fact that 30 carloads of scrap iron and steel were moved off the property. In re-establishing transportation facilities at the plant, a previous disadvantage of a steep grade on the high line was obviated by excavating 1600 yd. of solid rock; the fire having destroyed all town buildings below, made this work possible.

The flooding process was originally the result of accidents to casing and tubing, but it has gradually passed from an accidental condition to a definite engineering procedure. In spite of the general sheetlike char-acter of the major sand body, the position of shale bands, their thickness, the size of the grain and variations in effective porosity all give the sand different characteristics in different layers and in different places in the same layer. This condition has an important influence on the movement of flood oil and water, and on the yield per acre, as well as a bearing on what shall be considered the best method of handling flood wells. . A valuation takes into consideration six factors: (1) Flooding methods, of which four have been in common use, as follows, in order of effective recovery, (a) circular flood, (b) line flood, (c) five-spot and (d) five-spot with delayed drilling; (2) recovery per acre, which is definitely related to the oil content, the porosity, the method of flooding, the spacing program, and the continuity of the water supply; (3) the rate of production per well per day, which is definitely related to the mcthod of flooding, the oil content and the porosity of the sands; (4) the operating cost of the well, including royalty, overhead, taxes, etc. (Operating costs are usually expressed as unit cost per barrel.); (5) the expected price per barrel. It is safer to use the average price over a number of years than to attempt to forecast future price fluctuations. The discount factor (the sixth factor) used in appraisal of Bradford flood properties should be less than that commonly applied to other properties, because the hazards of operations have been reduced almost to those of a manufacturing industry.

The Mg-Si and Mg-Ge phase diagrams were rede-levtnined by thermal analysis, and the existence of a single congruent melting compound in each system was confirmed. The melting points of the two compounds Mg2Ge and ,Wg2Si were found to be 1117.4° and 1085.0°C respectively. The euteclics for the Mg-Ge system occur at 635.6°C (1.15 at. pcl Ge) and 696. 7°C (64.3 at. pct Ge); for the Mg-Si system the eutectics are at 6376°C (1.16 at. pct Si) and 945.6°C (53.0 al. pcl Si). The phase diagrams and known thermodynamic data were used to calculate activity values for both systems. The activities calculated for the Mg-Ge system agreed very well with those previously published. Partial molar enthalpy values for the Mg-Si systetn were calculated from the phase diagram for the composition region where no experimental values have been reported. THE phase diagram for any system is an important source of thermodynamic data. Steiner, Miller, and Komarek1 have derived equations which permit calculation of the activity in binary systems with an inter-metallic compound! if the liquidus and enthalpy data are known. The thermodynamic properties of the Mg-Ge and Mg-Si systems have recently been determined in this by by an isopiestic method, and it was considered that it would be interesting to compare these directly determined values with those computed from the phase diagram. The basic features of the Mg-Ge and Mg-Si systems are essentially similar. The one intermediate compound present in each system. Mg2X, crystallizes in the antifluorite structure and melts congruently. Raynor4 has accurately determined the temperature and composition of the magnesium-rich eutectic in both the Mg-Ge and Mg-Si systems. Klemm and West-linning5 investigated the entire Mg-Ge liquidus, employing sintered alumina crucibles; the purity of the magnesium and germanium starting materials was not reported. The melt was not stirred, and the temperature was automatically recorded to an accuracy of ±3°C. The authors reported large weight changes due to magnesium evaporation between 50 and 67 at. pct Mg. The Mg-Si system has been studied by a number of investigators, and the results have been compiled by Hansen and Anderko.6 Significant discrepancies exist between the two principle investigations of voge17 and Wohler and Schliephake.8 Two different grades of silicon were used by Vogel, one of 99.2 pct purity and the other quite impure, containing 6 pct Fe and 1.7 pct Al. The magnesium purity was not specified. The melts were contained in graphite crucibles with porcelain thermocouple protection tubes under an atmosphere of hydrogen. Samples weighing 10 g were rapidly heated to 50° to 100°C above the liquidus: held, and then rapidly cooled without stirring. Accuracy was ±1 at. pct which is equivalent to a maximum error in temperature of ±18°C. Wohler and Schliephake used 97.9 pct Mg and 99.48 pct Si. The graphite crucibles contained a stirrer and the 15-g samples were melted under an atmosphere of streaming hydrogen. The samples were chemically analyzed after each run. Because of the scarcity of the data, the impurity of the starting materials, and the resultant uncertainty and inconsistency in the published liquidus values, it was decided to undertake a reevaluation of the Mg-Ge and Mg-Si phase diagrams by thermal analysis. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared from 99.99+ pct Mg (Dominion Magnesium Ltd.) with impurities in ppm: 20 Al, 30 Zn, 10 Si, <1 Ni, <1 Cu. <10 Fe; 99.999 pct Ge (United Mineral and Chemical Corp.), and 99.999 pct Si (Wacker Chemie Corp.). All graphite parts were machined from high-density (1.89 g per cu cm) G-grade graphite obtained from Basic Carbon Corp. with a total ash content of 0.04 pct. Boron nitride parts were machined from rods of National-grade H.B.N. boron nitride. All graphite and boron nitride pieces were baked out under running vacuum at 1100°C for 24 hr before us Cylindrical graphite crucibles (1; in. OD, 23/4 in. long, l3/8 in. ID) were tightly closed with threaded graphite covers which had 21/4-in.-long thermocouple wells and 1/4-in.-diam off-center holes for stirrers. The cover and thermocouple well were machined from a single piece of graphite. A stirrer was made from a flat cylindrical graphite plate perforated with five 3/16-in.-diam holes and a 1/2-in.-diam central hole, and was held parallel to the crucible bottom by a 1/4-in.-diam. 4-in.-long graphite rod which screwed into the plate and extended up through a tightly fitting hole in the crucible cover. An iron core enclosed in a glass capsule was attached to the stirrer with an 18-in.-long molybdenum wire, so that the stirrer could be magnetically raised and lowered from outside the system. One crucible and stirrer with essentially the same dimensions given above was made entirely of boron nitride. Chunks of magnesium were premelted, cast into 11/2-in.-diam. rods, and then cut into lengths varying from a to 1 in. A 5/16-in. hole was drilled through the center of each piece to accommodate the thermocouple well and the individual pieces were then cleaned and rinsed with acetone. The total weight of an alloy was 50 to 70 g in the Mg-Ge system and 40 to 60 g in the Mg-Si system. The pure components were weighed to an accuracy
