UehliNg, New York City (communication to the Secretary*):—In adding my mite to the discussion, I wish to touch on a few points which bear emphasizing and perhaps a little further elucidation. Mr. Grammer says that he "found the electric pig-breaker at Duquesne, if used in connection with the iron-chill, less expensive and more satisfactory " thau the casting-machine. The cost of handling the iron over the Duquesne casting-niachine is about double the average cost of the other Uehling machines at the several Carnegie plants. It is nearly as expensive to run as the Hey1 & Patterson machines, and while Mr. Grammer's statement is, no doubt, true, as applied to that particular machine and breaker, it should be borne in mind that the machine at Duquesne had embodied in it several new features, which were not improvements; also that it was taxed beyond its economic capacity. The machine at the Lucy furnaces under the management of Mr. Scott handled the output of the two furnaces, and saved

Triaxial compression tests on Indiana limestone indicate that chemical additives in the pore fluids can increase or decrease the strength in plastic failure but not in brittle failure. Tests using a series of the sodium salts of dicarboxylic acids show that odd-number carbon-atom chains decrease the yield strength as much as 3.0 x 10 3 psi, and even-number carbon-atom chains increase the yield strength as much as 9.0 x 102 psi. ,The most effective chemical (sodium citrate) decreased the yield strength of Indiana limestone from 16.0 x 103 to 12.0 x 103 psi. The chemical additives investigated have no influence on microbit drilling rate when drilling with zero differential pressure. However, when drilling at a 2.0 x 103-psi pressure differeniial and using an odd-number carbon chain compound as the circulating fluid, the roller bit drilling rates were slower than with water whereas the drag bit drilling rates were faster. One even-number carbon chain compound added to the circulating fluid produces the opposite effect: the roller bit drilling rate is slightly faster than with water and the drag bit slower than with water. INTRODUCTION A Russian book by Rehbinderl published in 1944 generated much interest in the possibility of aiding and accelerating the destruction of solids by the action of a liquid in which the solids are deformed. This book describes a process in which microcracks are generated during elastic deformation. To describe this process, the rock is divided into three zones: (1) the zone in which the destruction takes place, (2) the predestruc-tion zone (an affected area immediately below the destroyed zone) and (3) the undisturbed specimen. Consider a load applied normally to a surface of an infinite slab of rock. Immediately below the point of application of the load, the rock is destroyed by compression or shear forces. Below this area of destruction, because of a great number of discontinuities ranging from defects to weak points in crystals of discontinuities in crystal latices, very small cracks are created in or between the crystals (often referred to as microcracks). Upon removing the load, the broken rock in the destroyed zone could be removed. In the lower predestruction zone, however, the microcracks in and between the crystals could disappear by the process of rehealing, i.e., the molecular attraction from one side of the crack to the other side being sufficient to completely eliminate the crack. Thus, a large number of these microcracks possibly exist only for a relatively short period of time. The concept of small cracks being generated within the crystals of a rock is not unreasonable. If the rock matrix is deformed below the yield point, some of the defects present within the crystalline structure could start small cracks through the interior of the grains. Upon removal of the load, these microcracks reheal (or the newly generated surfaces come back together) so that all evidence of cracks completely disappears. Under various types of loading, and in various types of fluids, the rehealing of these cracks would be time dependent. If a liquid adhered to the surface of a rock, it could penetrate into the microcracks and thus delay or prevent the rehealing process. This suggests that the prevention of healing of the microcracks may be dependent upon the wetting characteristics of the solid. Thus, rocks which are water-wet should be more easily destroyed in water than in nonpolar hydrocarbon liquid. Adsorption of a liquid could also reduce the free surface energy which could explain the decrease in strengths of materials under nonrepetitive-type loading. Rehbinder's work prompted Boozer, Hiller and Serdengecti 2 to examine the effects of pore fluids on the deformation of rocks subjected to triaxial compression over a range of confining pressures, temperatures and strain rates. Fluids which strongly adsorbed on the rock grain surfaces decreased the strength of sandstone and limestone, which deformed plastically. For certain strain

W. P. PUTNAM,. Detroit, Mich.-There is one company that is heating these tubes in an upright position by passing electrical energy directly through the tube itself. The lower connection is attached to an indicator, which shows the point at which the steel passes through the critical range At that point the clamps are released and the tube is dropped into a well of oil. This method simplifies the heat treatment of tubes in long lengths. H. J. FRENCH.-I am not entirely familiar with. the method outlined, but it appears to have one serious disadvantage; that is, the length of tubing that is directly connected with the electrical contacts is wasted and must be cut off due to either heavy oxidation or burning. That is a serious difficulty, if true in all cases, and cannot be overcome, inas-much as it is very difficult to draw long tubes of thin wall. Having once obtained a lot of tubes, to cut, say 14 ft. in length, there is often little excess metal available to discard. Am I correct concerning the burning or heavy oxidation of the metal where it comes in contact with the tube.

A. K. McCosh, Coatbridge, Scotland (written discussion*).-It is well known in Great Britain that oven operators in the United States have been able to reduce the coking time much below European standards by the employment of higher temperatures. Our linings have always been the factor that has prevented our doing the same, and it would be of much interest to coke-oven operators here if Mr. Blauvelt would give a typical analysis of the bricks his company uses for the linings of its ovens, and if he could see his way to send me a sample so that I could have the texture examined, I should personally be very much obliged. The lining brick which my company has found most successful is of a ganister variety, and has the following analysis: Silica, 80.8 per cent.; alumina and iron oxide, .17.8 per cent.; lime, 0.8 per cent.; magnesia, 0.07 per cent.; but with this brick the least carelessness on the gas regulator's part may destroy the lining. It would also be of interest if Mr. Blauvelt could give the temperatures of the air leaving these generators and also of the oven flues.

TANTALUM and columbium occur together in tantalite and columbite ores, which may be considered as ferrotantalate (FeTa206), with part of the iron and tantalum replaced by manganese and columbium respectively, the general formula, therefore, becoming (Fe, Mn)O.(Ta, Cb)205. The ratio of tantalum to columbium is not fixed; the amount of tantalum may vary from one-third to three times that of columbium. Minerals having a high content of tantalum are called tantalite, while those possessing larger amounts of columbium are classified as columbite ores. These minerals are found in pegmatites and often occur in veins associated with cassiterite and wolframite, and may contain small amounts of tin, tungsten, titanium and silica.1

President Howe : It is not so clear to me that the facts which Dr. Waldo brings forward really argue that the nature of the combination between copper and aluminum differs from that of the combination between copper and zinc or copper and tin. As regards electric conductivity, I suppose that the fact, which he thinks points to a special intimate kind of union between aluminum and copper, is that the line in his Fig. 1 is neither straight nor uniformly curved, but that its curvature varies rapidly, not to say abruptly. But we find just such variation in like curves for the copper-zinc and copper-tin alloys. Thus, a slight addition of zinc or tin to copper causes a change in color wholly out of proportion to the quantity added; and, as we add zinc or tin to copper, the tenacity rises very greatly, only to fall off abruptly with further additions of either of these metals. The temperature dependence of the microscopic yield stress (the stress to produce a plastic strain of 2 x 10-6 in. per in.) and the stress-plastic strain curve of polycrystalline Cu 1.9 wt pct Be have been measured for the solution treated condition, an intermediate condition containing G.P. zones and ?' precipitate and the overaged ? precipitate condition, in the range from -58° to 200° C. A transition in micro -yield behavior and a large temperature dependence were noted for the intermediate condition, which are interpreted in terms of the interaction of glide dislocations with two differently sized zones. In comparison the microscopic yield stresses of the solution treated and overaged conditions were less sensitive to temperature variations and are satisfied by the Mott-Nabarro and dislocation bowing theories, respectively. A determination of the temperature dependence of the yield stress of a precipitation hardening alloy has provided a powerful tool for evaluation of the operative deformation mechanism. There is a marked contrast between the effect of temperature on the yield behavior of a metal containing coherent zones or intermediate precipitates, which can be "cut through" by mobile dislocations, and a metal containing a dispersion of noncoherent particles, through which dislocation "bowing out" is the dominant role of deformation.' These studies have in general been confined to single crystals, as it was considered that similar experiments on polycrystalline material did not produce good data because of the lack of sensitivity with which the yield stress could be determined. However, this objection has been removed by the introduction of mi-crostrain techniques, with which the yield stress in polycrystalline materials can be measured to a strain sensitivity of 10-6. Such measurements have not only shown that the deformation of polycrystalline precipitation hardening alloys can be examined with the same detail as single crystals, but also that some unexpected results are obtained.' In this paper the results obtained from a study of the temperature dependence of the microscopic yield stress (the stress to produce a plastic strain of 2 x 10-6 in. per in.) and the stress-plastic strain curve of a polycrystalline Cu 1.9 wt pct Be precipitation hardening alloy (Berylco 25) are discussed. The temperature dependence of the alloy was measured for three different conditions: 1) The solution treated condition (a supersaturated solid solution of a containing ~12 at. pct Be3) which is obtained by water quenching the alloy from 800° C. 2) The condition of y' intermediate precipitate, to- gether with some G.P. zones,' which is produced after an aging treatment of 2 hr at 315°C from the solution treated condition. (The alloy was cold rolled to 40 pct reduction prior to aging to minimize grain boundary precipitation effects.)4 3) The condition with equilibrium ? precipitate structure2 which is developed after an aging treatment of 24 hr at 425° C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile specimens of gage length 1 in. and with rectangular cross section of 0.18 by 0.06 in. were prepared from the solution treated, cold rolled alloy and were either resolution treated for 1 hr at 800°C, followed by water quenching, or aged for 2 hr at 315°C and 24 hr at 425° C to produce the desired precipitate structures. The microstrain characteristics of the aged specimens were determined at temperatures from —58" to 200° C and those of the solution treated specimens from -58° to 30° C. Each temperature was controlled to ± 0.2°C, which was a level of stability sufficient to eliminate thermal expansion effects from the measurements (~1.2°C temperature increase produced an extension of 2 x 10-6 in.). The microplastic behavior of the specimens in the temperature range below 82" C was measured with a standard Tuckerman strain gage,5 while at temperatures above 82°C a modified Tuckerman gage with a reduced strain sensitivity (4 x10-6 in. per- in.) was used. A load-unload technique was used to establish values of the microscopic yield stress. The specimen was strained at a constant cross head speed of 2 x 10-2 in. per min to a given stress level, at which the total strain was measured. Then the specimen was immediately unloaded at the same rate and any residual plastic strain determined. This procedure was repeated for an increasing series of stress levels until the microscopic yield stress was established by a direct measure of the stress to produce a residual plastic strain of 2 x 10-6 in. per in. (It should be noted that, as reversible dislocation motion occurs at stresses less than the microscopic yield stress,2 the plastic strain rate at this level was not constant.) In an ideal test, the microscopic yield stress would be determined from a continuous stress-strain measurement, rather than from a load-unload sequence, in order to eliminate mechanical recovery effects.6 However, it was found experimentally that mechanical recovery was negligible in Cu 1.9 wt pct Be at small plastic strains for all the temperatures investigated, as the microscopic yield stress was independent of the number of load-unload cycles employed (i.e., the values measured for specimens subjected to different numbers of cycles was within the experimental scatter determined for specimens tested in an identical manner). Fletcher Mill is located in the southern part of the New Lead Belt in Southeastern Missouri, in the northwestern part of Reynolds County. Shaft sinking began in July, 1964. The mill went on stream in February, 1967, and reached the designed rate of 5,000 tons per day in July, 1968. The ore occurs approximately 1,000 feet below the surface as disseminated deposits of galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite. There is no oxidation within the ore body and dissemination is not fine enough to present liberation problems with a normal grind. Mining is by the room and pillar method with rubber-tired diesel- propelled drilling and loading equipment. The ore is dumped through a 27-inch square grizzly into a 5,000-ton pocket. The underground primary crusher is automatically fed by a vibrating feeder and discharges directly into skip measuring bins. Hoisting is automatic, in balance, with 8. 5-ton skips dumping into a 1,000-ton mill bin. MILL The concentrator is a 5, 000 tons-per-day single section plant equipped to produce lead, zinc and copper concentrates. Contained under 35, 347 square feet of roof, without fine ore storage or remote crushing, and with sufficient automation to be operated by one man, the plant is compact, unique, and efficient in operation. Y.)—How does this effect of silica compare with the effect of silica in combining with the lime in the slag to reduce the activity of CaO, thereby affecting the first equation? John Chipman(authors' reply)-—That is the object of showing this effect for slags of two different basicities. In the more basic, the silica is more firmly tied up in the slag and is less easily reduced. It is therefore less able to interfere with desulphurization. THE desulphurizing of pig iron has been accomplished with a number of different additions. The oldest and still most commonly used agent is soda, the extensive use of which commenced about 1925, when it was used principally for cupola furnace iron. More recent experience' seems to show that better results can be obtained with sodium hydroxide. The well-known desulphurizing properties of lime have also been exploited in different technical processes. Another material with even more powerful effect is calcium carbide.' The desulphurizing ability of manganese, when added to the ladle in sufficient quantity, should also be mentioned in this connection. During recent years increasing attention has been paid to the desulphurizing properties of metallic magnesium." An addition of a suitable alloy of magnesium is now in use purely for the purpose of sulphur elimination. Of the desulphurizing agents mentioned, lime is by far the cheapest, provided that the reaction can be brought about rapidly and completely. Therefore, a method that makes full use of the desulphurizing ability of lime may be able to compete with other processes. A method developed at the Dom-narfvet Iron and Steel Works (Sweden) will be described, which enables pig iron to be rapidly desulphurized to very low sulphur contents by using a burnt lime powder. as the desulphurizing agent. Lime in Older Processes In cases where lime has been used for the desul-phurization of pig iron, it has generally not been used alone, but mixed with other substances such as fluorspar, to obtain the formation of a molten slag during the process. This method has been tried by Tigerschiold,' who treated the iron with a lime-fluorspar mixture, the stirring of the iron being brought about inductively with low frequency alternating current. Very good results were obtained. A process of this type has also been suggested by R. P. Heuer, U. S. A. The principles of this method, which has been tested in Great Britain by Newell. Lanener. and Parsons." re that a mixture of lime and fluoispar is added to the hot metal in the ladle, while a powerful stream of nitrogen gas is blown into the bath to produce the required intermixing. The results of the tests were unsatisfactory, however. A similar process has been developed at The Steel Co. of Canada, according to a statement by H. M. Griffith.' Here the tests were carried out in a carbon-lined ladle provided with carbon tuyeres in the side wall for blowing nitrogen into the bath. The addition consisted of about 20 lb of a mixture of burnt lime and fluorspar per ton of pig iron. Good results appear to have been achieved. The sulphur content of the pig iron is stated to have been reduced from 0.025 to 0.050 pct down to 0.006 pct. Various methods of desulphurizing pig iron have been tried using lime powder without fluxing material for fusing. Eichholz and Behrendt7 have experimented with blowing a powdered limeicoke mixture with air into the ladle. Their results were, however, not conclusive and the experiments do not appear to have been continued. Similar experiments have been carried out at Domnarfvet, using nitrogen instead of air in order to avoid oxidation. But these attempts were not particularly successful. It appears to be difficult to achieve the required agitation by this means. The strong cooling effect of the gas on the iron is also a serious drawback. A method in many respects similar to that tried at Domnarfvet was tried by Eulenberg and Krus at the end of the 1930's. Here again desulphurization was carried out with lime alone, brought into contact with the molten iron in a rotary furnace. The temperature was kept at the required level, 1400" to 1500°C, by the introduction of a pulverized coal burner in one end of the furnace. The speed of rotating was not given. A paper by Bading and Krus states that, in one of the first experiments, the sulphur content in 56 tons of pig iron was brought down from 0.186 to 0.035 pct in 117 min, but that a considerable shortening of the time would be possible. According to later reports by Eichholz and Behrendt,' it should be possible by this process to achieve a desulphurization speed of 0.35 pct S per hr for a consumption of 6 to 10 pct limestone and 2 to 3 pct coke, as fuel exclusively. The final sulphur content is, however, not stated. Domnarfvet Method After a number of different procedures had been investigated, the tests at Domnarfvet were directed to desulphurization with lime in a rotary furnace. Before going into the practical details of the method, the theoretical aspects will be discussed briefly. If the pig iron does not contain alloying elements other than carbon, the reaction can be expressed most simply by the usual equation: FeS + CaO + C = Fe + CaS + CO [I] 4H,. ~ 34,000 cal That this reaction can be carried through to a very complete desulphurization of pig iron has been shown by OelsenD in a discussion in connection with the Eulenberg and Krus' method. He mentions two laboratory tests, in one of which the sulphur content in the pig iron at 1400°C was reduced from 0.540 to 0.006 pct after treating with 3.35 pct lime. The pig iron had a low manganese content, but other analysis is th. given. Mention also should be made of the recently published investigations by Fischer and Cohnen'" dealing with the influence of the carbon content of the iron on desulphurization with lime, although in this case fluorspar was added also. The tests show that efficient desulphurization is possible with lime in the steel bath, provided that the carbon content is sufficiently high. The temperature employed in these tests was considerably higher (1620") than that normal for treatment of pig iron. The author concludes that the product S% X C% - 0.011 at the temperature in question.

Six compositions of polycrystalline ZY-0 alloys, containing up to 4.2 at. pct 0, were tested in tension between 77° and 600° K. The data obtained from each of the compositions corresponded closely to a rela-ion between yield stress and absolute temperature of the form In s/so = BT, where oo is the yield stress extrapolated to zero degrees and B is a constant. In agreement with others who have observed this relationship, it is shown that the activation energy may be expressed as Ho In so/s. In the present specimens Ho is approximately 18,000 cal per mole and is apparently independent of temperature and composition inside the limits of the investigation. It is also demonstrated that this form of activation energy cowesponds to a strain rate sensitivity parameter RT/Ho. Oxygen was also noted to have an effect upon the operative deformation mechanisms. With increasing oxygen concentration there was an increased tendency to observe both nonbasal slip and cross-slip phenomena. Oxygen does not seriously inhibit twinning more than it does slip. Twins were observed in all specimens tested. It is becoming increasingly evident that interstitial atoms in solid solution are able to interact strongly with mobile dislocations. Stein, Low, and seybolt,&apos; have shown that, if the carbon concentration in bcc iron is lowered below the solubility limit, its flow stress temperature dependence is markedly reduced. This suggests that carbon atoms in interstitial solid solution may be responsible for the pronounced temperature dependence of the flow stress normally observed in iron. This view has recently been challenged by Leslie and sober2 who observed a strong flow stress temperature dependence in iron to which a trace of titanium had been added in order to remove carbon atoms from solution. Since the interstitial concentration must be reduced below approximately 1 ppm in order to produce a pronounced effect on the flow stress temperature dependence,&apos; studies of the effect of interstitials on the flow stress in iron necessarily involve serious experimental difficulties in alloy preparation. There are other metals, however, in which strong effects of interstitial solutes upon both the flow stress and its temperature dependence are observed. Of particular significance is zirconium which, according to Domagala and Mcpherson, 3 is capable of dissolving 28.6 at. pct O. The O-Zr alloy system is an almost ideal system for studying the interaction of interstitial atoms with deformation modes since it is possible to form alloys capable of study over an extensive range of compositions. Mills has made such a study using single crystals oriented primarily for single prismatic slip4 and has found an effect of oxygen concentration on the flow stress temperature dependence analogous to that observed in iron due to carbon by Stein, Low, and Seybolt. The present paper is specifically concerned with the effect of oxygen on deformation in polycrystalline zirconium. Although plastic flow in this type of specimen is much more complex than that reported for the single-crystal work, and involves both slip (on several different types of planes) and mechanical twinning, the results of this investigation are in general agreement with the single-crystal observations concerning the effect of oxygen on the temperature dependence of the flow stress. In addition, they also demonstrate that oxygen affects the acting deformation systems. This is in contrast to single-crystal results4 that showed only single slip on a prism plane. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material. High-purity hot-rolled zirconium strip, 0.2 in. thick by 4 in. wide, of 0.10-mm average grain diameter, was used for forming alloys. It was obtained from the Carborundum Metals Co., Akron, N.Y., whose analysis indicated the major impurities were, in wt ppm: Hf, 540, C, 145; Fe, 100; and 0, <80. The plate texture was similar to a wire texture, with basal planes generally parallel to the rolling direction and basal poles randomly distributed about the rolling direction. The heat treatments described below did not appreciably alter the basic texture. specimen Preparation. Small threaded-end tensile specimens were machined from the plate with axes perpendicular to the rolling direction. These transverse specimens had gage sections 1 in. long by 0.060 in. in diam. The regular activities of the Insti¬tute are financed mainly by income derived from members&apos; dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the principal sums of these endowments amount to more than $560,000. An active effort is being made to in¬crease the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which H. T. Hamilton is chairman; Paul D. Merica, vice-chairman, and of which the other members are: W. H. Aldridge, George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, John V. M. Dorr, Howard N. Eavenson, D. C. Jackling, Henry Krumb John M. Lovejoy, Harvey D. Mudd and J. V. W. Reynders. This committee feels that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of ever-growing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light by the committee.

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the relative merits of the large 31/8 in. machine and the small 21/4-in. tappett machine in driving development-headings ; and although the . data here presented were obtained from cross-cut headings alone, experience has shown that the results are equally true in drifting, raising and winning. Recently we drove two parallel cross-cuts through the same formation, using a 3k-in. machine at the breast of one cross-cut., and a 2k-in. machine of the same make at the breast of the other. The results of this work afforded an ideal comparison, since in both cases the headings were advanced through rock practically of the same hardness and breaking-properties ; the amount of sludging was equal, and there was no difference in the condition of the steel or the machines, in the air-pressure or in the experience of the operating-crews. Some operators in the Cripple Creek district contend that there is ground which cannot be handled with the small machine, the holes being too small to contain enough powder to pull the ground, etc. The results obtained in working the property of the Portland Gold Mining Co., however, show that the ground worked by them does not fall in this class. During a period of two years there have been driven, with the small machine, 4 miles and 308 ft. of development-headings, through a diversity of ground, including Pike&apos;s Peak granite (a coarsely porphyritic type of granite), highly indurated, andesitic or phonolytic breccia, true massive andesite, trachytic phonolyte, tuffas, and along dikes of decomposed basalt and hard phonolyte; in every instance a satisfactory record was made. The headings here described were driven through highly indurated, andesitic breccia, having a hardness of from 5.2 to 7.2
