The violent explosion of Mount St. Helens in the state of Washington on May 18, 1980 showered volcanic ash over vast areas of the Northwest. It was another eruptive episode in a long history of similar occurrences in the region, which extends from Canada to California and reaches several hundred miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. Pumice, pumicite, and cinders are products of explosive volcanic eruptions. Pumice and pumicite are produced by the violent expansion of dissolved gases in a viscous silicic lava such as rhyolite or dacite. Scoria is the mafic counterpart of pumice. Pumice is a light-colored, cellular, almost frothy rock made up of glass-walled bubble casts. It may occur as coherent, massive blocks composed of highly vesicular glassy lava in either a flow or vent filling, or it may be more or less fragmented by violent eruption. Pumicite, the diminutive of pumice, has the same origin, chemical composition, and glassy structure, differing only in particle size. Particles less than 0.16 in. in diam are designated pumicite. Pumice usually is found relatively close to the vent from which it was expelled, while pumicite may be carried by winds for great distances before settling as an accumulation of fine-grained ash or tuffaceous sediment. Mount St. Helens lofted an estimated 5 billion cu yd of ash and pumicite. The volcano, unlike most of the High Cascade peaks, is composed largely of dacitic material with only minor amounts of andesite and basalt. Volcanic cinders are the reddish to black vesicular fragments which pile up during explosive eruptions of volcanoes of basaltic composition. Most cinder deposits occur as cones or mounds of stratified fragments ranging from a fraction of an inch to several inches in diameter. Individual cones or mounds may be several hundred feet in diameter and up to 500 ft high. Properties and Uses Low bulk density, good heat and sound insulating properties, and excellent abrasive capabilities make pumice and pumicite useful in industrial applications. Cinders, though less cellular and somewhat heavier, also have a variety of industrial uses. The main use of pumice and cinders continues to be in the construction industry as road-surfacing material, railroad ballast, and building block aggregate. Pumicite is used in sizable quantities as a pozzolanic additive to monolithic concrete where it increases workability, strength, and durability of the concrete and reduces the heat of hydration. Volcanic cinders generally are denser and more coarsely cellular than most pumice. Markets for cinders include aggregate for road construction and surfacing and use in lightweight concretes, particularly blocks. Some producers having access to both pumice and cinders offer a variety of blends of the two materials to block manufacturers. Table I lists the principal applications of industrial pumice. Tables 2 and 3 show US sales and uses of volcanic products. Most pumice deposits are unconsolidated and usually have a minimum of overburden. Mining is by open pit and can be easily carried out with conventional loading equipment. Sometimes air drying precedes hauling to a crushing and screening plant which yields the size product desired. Multiple bins at railroad hauling facilities permit blending if desired. Pumice for abrasive use may require more sophisticated processing by fine grinding and air classification before being bagged for market.

MAGNETITE minim and milling in the Eastern States continued at a low rate of production during 1934. The year's output was 50 per cent greater than in 1933, but when one considers that the 1934 output was only 1.5 per cent of the combined plant capacities of the eastern iron ore producers, the far-reaching effect of unrestricted importation of foreign ores and pig iron is apparent. The Chateaugay Ore and Iron Co., at Lyon Mountain, N. Y., produced 1.00,136 gross tons of concentrated and sintered ore up to Nov.1, when operations were closed clown. At Mineville, the Witherbee, Sherman Corp. confined its productivity to part-time operation of its Old Bed and Harmony mines front May 1 Lo Oct. 27. This period of activity was brought about by the use of Mineville ores in the recent blast made by the Green Island furnace at Troy, N. Y. The Forest of Dean property at Fort Montgomery, N, Y., has continued closed down during the year.

T HE Mid-Continent Section of the Petroleum Division met on Mar. 11 in the engineer's room of the Tulsa Building, Tulsa, Okla., for the purpose of reviewing the papers presented at the annual meeting in New York. L. G. E. Pignell, chairman and delegate to New York for the Mid-Continent Section, read a brief report giving the outstanding features of the various papers that were presented. He expressed regret that more members of the Division could not be present in New York to hear the interesting papers and discussions. It was his opinion that the various remedies presented for overproduction seemed rather theoretical and impractical and he recommended that the engineers come to the aid of some of the economists in giving more practical consideration to the overproduction problem.

Since the annual meeting held in February, 1917, when the Woman's Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E., was formed, the work of organization, which of necessity must be slow, has steadily gone forward. Under the Chairmanship of Mrs. C. C. Burger of the Welfare Committee, three active sub-committees have been formed: that of Americanization; under Mrs. Levi Holbrook, who is eminently fitted for such a position, by her active and valuable work in a number of the fine patriotic societies of our country; the Belgian Relief Committee, under Mrs. Henry H. Knox, which has clone phenomenal work in the three months of its existence, and whose report is later given in detail; and the Emergency Committee under Mrs. Herman A. Prosser, which has a fund already established, and is. in close touch with Major Arthur S. Dwight, ready to act when necessity arises. The officers of the Auxiliary feel more than gratified at the response so far received, and in a later issue will print extracts from letters, if permission can be gotten from the writers, showing the interest and enthusiasm that have beer aroused by the formation of a Woman's Auxiliary. Answers have even come from far Korea "the hermit nation," from Australia, from South America, showing what a bond of sympathy and, helpfulness is in process of growth. It is our sad duty to announce the death of our Treasurer, Mrs. George D. Baryon, who, from the very inception of our plan to organize, was an inspiring and valuable co-worker. Her place will be difficult to fill. Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight is Acting Treasurer at present. The Auxiliary wishes to express its heartiest thanks to Mr. Stoughton, the genial and efficient Secretary of the A. I. M. TABLES showing the drift and inclination of wells surveyed in the years 1924 to 28' and in the year 1929' have already been published. Each of these tables included a little over 1,000,000 ft. of rotary hole. In the year 1930 the table -shown-in . Fig. 1, comprising, the results of surveys .of 1,030,344 ft. of hole and representing 11,642 individual survey readings, was compiled. For that purpose we selected 'I only wells that had been drilled in California during that year. The footage of Fig. 1 differs from the two earlier tables in that the wells were all drilled in the year 1930. In the earlier tables, the footage shown was surveyed in the years designated, but some of the wells were drilled in earlier years.

THE constitution of Cu-rich alloys with 1.5 to 13.5 pct Sn and 0.25 to 3.0 pct Be and the precipitation-hardening characteristics of alloys with 1.5 to 13.5 pct Sn and 0.25 to 1.0 pct Be have been examined. The hardness and tensile strength of the alloys examined increase markedly after solution treatment at 700°C followed by heat treatment at temperatures between 200" and 450°C. By a combination of cold work and heat treatment, hardness values similar to those exhibited by commercial Be-Cu alloys containing 2.25 pct Be can be obtained with ternary alloys containing 9 pct Sn and 0.75 pct Be and containing 10 pct Sn and 0.5 pct Be. Marked hardening effects occur with alloys containing even less beryllium. By heat treatment alone, a hardness value of 310 diamond pyramid hardness can be obtained from an alloy containing 10 pct Sn and 0.75 pct Be. Preliminary tensile tests have shown that an ultimate tensile strength of 110,000 psi with an elongation of 23 pct is obtainable by precipitation hardening an alloy with 8 pct Sn and 0.75 pct Be. The precipitation-hardening process has been followed microscopically for certain alloys and the inference is that, while the initial hardening effect is probably explained by the precipitation of the ß phase of the Cu-Be system, further hardening, proceeding at a much slower rate, also occurs, apparently as a result of precipitation of phases of the Cu-Sn system, particularly precipitation of the 6 phase at temperatures below 350". The presence of the e phase of the Cu-Sn system in certain alloys at temperatures below 350°C has been confirmed. Tin-bronzes are widely used in engineering applications where a combination of high strength and good resistance to corrosion is wanted. The maximum strength is induced in these alloys by cold working, and it would be an advantage for many purposes if high strength could be achieved alternatively by an age-hardening process. While Cu-Sn alloys have a good fatigue resistance they can be surpassed in this respect by Cu-Be, but the use of the latter alloy is limited by its high cost. If, by adding beryllium to tin-bronze, the properties of the respective binary alloys could to some extent be combined, a most attractive alloy should result. As pointed out by Raynor,¹ beryllium is on the borderline of the zone of favorable size factors for copper, and the solid solubility of beryllium in copper is consequently much more restricted than if the size factor were strongly favorable. The size factor is sufficiently favorable, however, to permit an increase in solid solubility with rise in temperature, and there is thus a composition range in which CU- Be alloys are susceptible to hardening by precipitation heat treatment. Although the a phase of the Cu-Sn system is similarly susceptible to precipitation treatment, the time necessary to establish equilibrium in commercial alloys of this type is usually so great that age hardening becomes impracticable. The addition of beryllium to Cu-Sn alloys would appear to offer a means of conferring on the latter useful age-hardening properties. Masing and Dahl² and others have, in fact, shown that the addition of beryllium to Cu-Sn a solid solutions renders these alloys susceptible to precipitation hardening and after such hardening confers on them an encouraging improvement in physical properties. If this improvement could be achieved by the addition of substantially smaller amounts of beryllium than are customarily found in binary Cu-Be alloys, the ternary alloys should possess economic advantages which might make them more attractive than the binary alloy for some applications. Binary Systems Copper-Tin: The constitution of these alloys is now reasonably well known and is summarized in the equilibrium diagram published by Raynor.³ The following observations, due to Raynor,¹ on the structure of those phases of the Cu-Sn system that are likely to be found in the ternary alloy system will facilitate the subsequent discussion on the examination of that system. The ß phase is an electron compound at the electron-atom ratio 3:2 and has a body-centered cubic crystal structure. This phase is stable only down to 586°C, at which temperature it decomposes eutectoidally into the a and y phases. The y phase has a structure that is also based on the cubic system. This phase is stable down to 520°C, at which temperature it decomposes eutectoidally into the a and d phases. The d phase is an electron compound (Cu³¹Sn8) which has a crystal structure analogous to that of 7 brass. This phase is stable from 590" to 350°C; on prolonged annealing at the latter temperature it breaks down into a mixture of the a and E phases. The e phase is an electron compound (Cu³Sn) having the electron-atom ratio 7:4. Its structure may be regarded as a superlattice based on the close-packed hexagonal system. This phase is stable from 676°C to room temperature. The primary solid solubility of tin in copper increases to a maximum of 15.8 pct as the temperature falls from that of the peritectic reaction to 586°C. The solid solubility remains constant from 586" to 520°C. At lower temperatures the solubility decreases progressively. Below 350°C the fall in solubility is pronounced and is associated with the precipitation of the e phase. This precipitation is very sluggish and does not normally occur under service conditions. Copper-Beryllium: The Cu-Be system has been investigated by Borchers' and others. Raynor5 summarized the present state of information on it.

(communication to the Secretary): When a simple beam supports any given load, the lower fibers me in tension while the upper fibers are in compression, and if its cross-section is rectangular the neutral surface, where the stresses pass through zero from tension to compression, is at mid-depth, provided the elastic limit is not exceeded. In addition to the longitudinal stresses, there are horizontal shearing-stresses between the fibers which have their maximum value in the neutral surface, and which equal zero at the upper and lower surfaces, while there are also vertical shearing-stresses. Let another beam of the same dimensions be placed on top of this one, and the load be doubled, it then produces stresses in each beam of the same character, magnitude and distribution as in the preceding case, provided there be no friction between the adjacent surfaces of the beams. Next let these two beams be so firmly united that there will be no motion between them when the same load is again applied. All the fibers in the upper beam are now in compression, and those in the lower beam in tension, while the maximum stresses in the outer fibers are only one-half as large as before. The strength of the combined beams is therefore doubled. If, however, some motion occurs between the beams, then the stresses in some of the lower fibers of the upper beam pass from compression to tension, and those in some of the upper fibers of the lower beam from tension to compression, while the stresses in the outer fibers have a magnitude between the two values previously stated. These fundamental facts relating to the flexure of beams indicate the necessity of carefully designing the keys or brace-

EARLY in the study of the low grade iron formations of Michigan, wide variations in their structure and texture became evident. Because of these variations no simple method of concentration is possible, and those portions of the formations that can be exploited profitably under a given stage of metallurgical progress and existing economic conditions must be searched for carefully. Both structure and texture of the formations have an important bearing on their amenability to bene-ficiation. By structure is meant the banding planes of easy fracture, the porosity, and the degree of leaching. Texture, which includes grain sizes, shapes, and degree of interlocking, determines the amount of grinding necessary to liberate the mineral grains. Structure determines the liberation of portions richer in one mineral. Structure and texture may be termed the gross features of the formation. Earliest surveys of the formations were conducted to outline the parts that could be concentrated at % in. (3 mesh). Operators agreed on this size because anything finer required sintering or other agglomeration processes. At 3 mesh only the structural features, as defined above, would be liberated. With suitable ores concentration was easy, as any of the gravity methods could be used. Sink-and-float gave good results, but with this method only limited portions of the iron formations yielded a desilrable product.1,2 n general, the iroa content could be raised to shipping grade, but the silica content remained too high—sometimes 20 pct—instead of 9 or 10 pct. Grinding did not greatly increase the liberation ofsilica until 2010 mesh or finer was reached. To find the reason fpr this T. M. Broderick began micros~opic examin'ations of the formations in 1933.3 Procedure: The purpose of this discussion is to correlate the appearance of typical portions of the iron formations with their amenability to concentration. As liberation is essential before separation becomes possible, much of the work is based on measuring the liberation achieved by crushing and grinding. Both heavy media and magnetic tube tests were used in this work. On the basis of general structural features such as banding, degree of alteration, and leaching, a specimen was selected from each part of the iron formations studied. The specimen represents the gross features of the formation and not necessarily the particular formation quantitatively. One half of the specimen was polished for macro-study, and the remainder was used for analyses to obtain the grades represented by variations appearing in the macrosection. Specimens for microscopic examination were also prepared for each variation in gross appearance. For correlation of microstructure with liberation, the previous work by sink-and-float methods was supplemented by magnetizing roasting followed by magnetic separation. The results show the liberation of silica to be very important at the sizes used, because any silica particle with iron minerals occluded would be held in the concentrate. A magnetizing roast changes the crushing and grinding character of the sample. For partly leached soft samples the change is slight, but with harder types and those in which there is a considerable change in crystal structure of the minerals, the increase in liberation of the iron minerals may be 30 pct more than that of unroasted samples at the same crusheH size. Gogebic Range Iron Formations: The Gogebic Iron Range is located in the extreme western and southern parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, extending westward into Wisconsin. Samples for this study were obtained from the Ironwood formation, comprising three chief members—the Plymouth, Norrie, and Ahvil—with several intermediate slates and thick overlying slates. (The slates are not considered in this discussion because grinding finer than present practice is usually required to liberate the iron minerals.) The predominant iron mineral is hematite, about half of which is hydrated to goe-thite. Limonite occurs in some of the partly leached areas, and siderite in parts of the formation.

A method is described for producing single crystals of high-purity beryllium, Be-4.37pct Cu, and Be-5.24 pct Ni. These crystals were prepared for testing in compression parallel to the [0001] by orienting and lapping to within ±3' of arc of the (0001). Microstrain testing apparatus is described along with c axis compression results for ingot purity beryllium, twelve-zone-pass material, and the above-mentioned alloys. Results show no measurable plasticity for the ingot purity material from -196" to 400°C, although some surface traces of (1122) slip was observed at 200°C and above. The twelve-zone-pass material shows substantial microstrain plasticity at 220°C with slip on (1122). Both alloys show significant plasticity at room temperature and above with slip also on (1122) planes. THE two slip systems which normally operate during the plastic deformation of beryllium in the vicinity of room temperature are:' basal slip (0001)(1120) and prism slip . Pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane has been reported for elevated temperatures,'-a but occurs near room temperature only at very high stresses.~ A summary of the available data on the effect of temperature on the critical resolved shear stress for slip on these systems has been compiled by Conrad and Perlmutter.~ It has been postulated6'7 that one of the principal factors contributing to the brittleness of poly crystalline beryllium at temperatures below about 200°C is the difficulty of operating pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane. Hence, detailed information on the operation of such a slip system is important to understanding the brittleness of beryllium. The operation of pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane is best accomplished in beryllium by compressing single crystals in a direction parallel to the c axis. In such a test the resolved macroscopic shear strzss on the basal and prism planes is zero and (1012) twinning which is favored by tension along the c axis does not occur. Hence, in c axis compression of beryllium the normal deformation modes are inhibited and the operation of pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane is favored. In the present investigation, c axis compression tests were performed on beryllium single crystal as a function of temperature (77" to 700°K), purity (commercial and twelve zone pass), and alloy content (4.37 wt pct Cu and 5.24 wt pct Ni). Presented here is a description of the test techniques employed and the gross mechanical behavior observed. A detailed analysis of the slip traces developed on the surfaces of the deformed specimens during these tests and the results of electron transmission studies of the deformed crystals are given in a separate paper.B PROCEDURE 1) Materials and Preparation. Single crystals about 1 in. diam were prepared of the following materials: commercial-purity beryllium, high-purity beryllium, and two beryllium alloys, one with 4.37 wt pct Cu and the other with 5.24 wt pct Ni. The commercial-purity single crystals were obtained by cutting specimens from large-grained ingot of Pechiney SR material, which is approximately 99.98 pct pure. The high-purity crystals were prepared by floating-zone refining (twelve passes) a rod (7 in. by 1 in, diam) of Pechiney SR grade cast and extruded beryllium. Although an absolute chemical analysis of the zone-refined material was not established, mass spectro-graphic analysis, emission spectrographic analysis, and y activation analysis indicated that it contained in atomic fractions about 5 to 10 ppm each of carbon and oxygen, 1 to 5 ppm each of nickel and iron, and about 1 to 2 ppm of copper, with the remaining residual impurities being less than 1 ppm. Further indication of the purity of this material is provided by the critical resolved shear stress for basal slip, which was approximately 300 psi. The starting material for the alloy single crystals was 1-in.-diam floating-zone-refined (six passes) rod of Pechiney SR grade beryllium. Two such rods were wrapped respectively with sufficient weight of wire of high-purity copper (99.999 pct) or nickel (99.999 pct) to yield a 5 wt pct alloy. A seventh floating-zone pass was then applied to each of the rods to accomplish the initial alloying and an eighth pass for homogenization. Analytical samples were taken from regions of the rod immediately adjacent to where the mechanical test specimens were cut; these indicated 4.37 wt pct Cu and 5.24 wt pct Ni. 2) Crystal Orientation. To avoid the occurrence of basal slip during c axis compression testing, it is necessary to load the crystals as nearly parallel to the c axis as possible. Preliminary c axis compression tests indicated that plastic flow and/or fracture occurred at stresses of the order of 300,000 psi; hence on the basis of a critical resolved shear stress for basal slip of 300 to 400 psi, the maximum crystal misorientation permitted is about 4 to 5' of arc. WTHIN the next month all members of the Institute will be given an opportunity to vote for a new President, two Vice-Presidents, and five Directors. All of the candidates nominated by the official committee are well known to certain groups of the Institute membership but a brief record of their professional lives will be given here for the information of those that will vote. Not since 1927, when Everette DeGolyer guided the destinies of the Institute, has a member of the Petroleum Division been a candidate for President. John Meston Lovejoy has been a Director since 1930, and a Vice-President as well for the last year: In the three years 1932-4 lie was also chairman of the Admissions Committee. Dir. Lovejoy graduated from the Columbia School of Mines in 1911, just before lie was 22 years old, and began his professional career as a copper miner at Chuquicamata. Chile. Silver and gold mining later claimed his % attention, and it was not until 1914 that lie gut into the oil business, as geologist for the Standard Oil Co. of N. Y. This took hint to China and he later worked for the company in Wyoming. In 1917 lie joined the Army where lie rose to be captain of Field Artillery. Upon his return to the United States he went to work for the Amerada Petroleum Co., of which he later became vice-president and general manager, with headquarters in Tulsa. Since coining to New York he has been president of the Petroleum Bond & Share Cu.. and is currently president of the Seaboard Oil Co.

A method has been developed for determining gases in steel in which the gases are extracted by vacuum fusion and analyzed by mass spectrometry. This method is especially applicable for determining small amounts of oxygen and nitrogen. The lower limit of detection for both oxygen and nitrogen is 0.0001 pct with an average deviation of about 0.0001 pct for oxygen and 0.00008 pct for nitrogen. Hydrogen analyses by this method are in good agreement with analyses by vacuum tin-fusion. A complete analysis of all gases extracted from a steel sample can be accomplished in 40 min. It has long been known that certain of the gaseous elements exert particular effects on the physical and mechanical properties of steel. With the recent advent of new experimental steelmaking practices it is now possible to obtain steels with extremely low contents of such elements as oxygen and nitrogen. Present methods for determining these two gases are of insufficient sensitivity as applied to steels made by these newer practices, and therefore a new technique was considered necessary. A review of the literature showed that the conventional vacuum-fusion method1 was the procedure most suitable for modification to obtain a sensitive method for determining the gaseous elements present in steel simultaneously. However, for trace amounts of gases it is impractical to increase the sample size because of the physical limitations of the apparatus and the increased degassing time which would be necessary. Also, when only one of the desired gases is present in trace amounts, quantitative separation by conventional vacuum fusion is almost impossible. Since small analytical mass spectrometers are now commercially available, it was decided to use this instrument in conjunction with conventional vacuum fusion for both qualitative examination and quantitative determinations of the gaseous elements in steel. This technique has already been used with success for the analysis of copper and lanthanum.2"4 APPARATUS A vacuum-fusion unit was first designed and built, Fig. 1. This unit was designed especially for the determination of small amounts of nitrogen and/or oxygen in steel since an acceptable method (vacuum tin-fusion)5 was already in use for the determination of hydrogen in steel. The vacuum system was con- structed of Pyrex glass throughout. Mercury check valves were used in place of stopcocks in the high-vacuum section of the system. Ferromagnetic samples are normally introduced into the vacuum system through a mercury lift. In case of a break in the lift, the mercury is prevented from entering the furnace by a self-locking, mercury safety check valve, Fig. 2. This check valve, developed at our laboratory, is a modified T/S ball-and-socket joint placed in the sample inlet system between the mercury and the furnace. A sudden entry of mercury or air pushes this valve into the closed position, completely blocking the top of the mercury lift. The check valve is held in the closed position by the vacuum of the apparatus. A separate entrance tube also was placed in the system, so that samples which would amalgamate with mercury, or which are nonmagnetic, could be introduced into the furnace. A slightly modified Guldner-Beach furnace is used in this system.8 The optical flat was connected to the system by a ground-glass joint to facilitate cleaning, a quartz delivery tube was substituted for Pyrex, and the crucible was used uncovered. Fusion takes place in a high-purity graphite crucible insulated by — 200-mesh high-purity graphite powder. The crucible set (crucible and funnel) is suspended in a quartz crucible. The furnace envelope and the sample inlet system are exhausted by 2 single-stage, mercury-diffusion pumps in series. The first of these is a high-speed pump, which will work only with a very low backing pressure. This pump is used to exhaust the gases from the furnace as rapidly as possible. The second mercury-diffusion pump is used as a backing pump for the first; the capacity of this pump is much lower. However, it will work efficiently against a back pressure of 3 mm of mercury. To assure positive pumping, a modified Naughton and Uhlig condenser7 is used. With the use of proper valving the second pump is also used as a circulation pump in the catalyst system.

Adsorption of polymers and transport, rheology and oil recovery efficiency of their solutions were studied in the laboratory to evaluate the use of polymers in waterflood-ing. While a tenfold mobility reduction was obtained with polymer concentrations as low as 0.05 per cent by weight, the mobility reduction depended on the type of polymer, molecular weight, salinity and pH of water, crude oil and capillary properties of the porous media. Choice of a suitable polymer and a workable concentration will have to be tailored for each application. Little reduction in the residual oil saturation can be expected from polymer flooding. Improvement in the volumetric sweep efficiency is possible hut the extent of the improvement can best be evaluated by properly designed field testing. Some aspects of the field use of polymer floods are discussed. INTRODUCTION Waterflooding is a simple, inexpensive secondary recovery method and is being used widely. Innumerable laboratory studies have been made to unravel the fundamentals of the displacement of oil by water and to find the ways of most efficient oil recovery. These studies and a great many field case histories have revealed that the prime cause of poor oil recovery is the inefficient and incomplete sweep of reservoir volume by the injected water. Sweep efficiency is affected by many factors of which the mobility ratio is an important one. Mobility ratio M is defined here as the ratio of water to oil mobilities: M = (k»/y,r)/(k,JJJJ........(1) In Eq. I, the permeabilities are the effective permeabilities and depend on fluid saturations and, hence, change during the different depletion stages in a flood. A wide practice is to use the effective water permeability at residual oil saturation and the effective oil permeability at interstitial water saturation in Eq. 1. If the mobility ratio is greater than one, the mobility ratio is unfavorable and water, being more mobile than oil, would finger through the oil zone resulting in poor oil recovery efficiency. If the mobility ratio is favorable (one or less) the displacement of oil by water occurs more or less in a pistonlike fashion. In some waterfloods. the mobility ratio is unfavorable and any additives by which the mobility of water can be decreased would favor more efficient oil recovery. The thing to bear in mind, however, is whether or not the improvement in oil recovery is sufficient to more than pay out the cost of the additives needed. For example, materials like sugars, alcohols and glycerine reduce water mobility by thickening the water, but the cost of material requirement precludes any field application. For an additive to be useful in water-flooding, it must bring about a large reduction in water mobility at low concentrations; it must be adsorbed only negligibly; and it must not completely plug up the formation. Some synthetic organic polymers have shown promise of meeting these requirements and have been used in the field.'-W owever, no in-depth studies of the rheological, adsorption and oil displacement characteristics of polymer solutions have been reported. The present work is a study of these properties. EXPERIMENTAL In this work, concentrations are given on a weight per volume basis; 0.5 per cent concentration means 0.5 gm of polymer is dissolved in enough water (or NaCl solution) to make 100 ml. A bactericide, usually 0.1 to 0.2 per cent by volume of 38 per cent formaldehyde solution, was used in the polymer solutions. The NaCl solution was 30,000 ppm. Some properties of the polymers studied are given in Table I. Physical properties of all cores used are in Table 2. Flow behavior of polymer solutions was studied by three consecutive flow tests in cores. First, water (or brine) was injected at constant rate of about 1 ft/D to obtain the water mobility. Then, filtered polymer solution (prepared in water or brine) was flowed through the core. Since the rate was constant, increase in the pressure drop across the core reflects decrease in the mobility. WHEN I was a boy I walked into Fairbanks in 1905. I was but a soft chechako, and arrived with blisters covering my feet, as a result of "mushing" the 400-mile trail on foot. Because of them, the display windows of the trading posts were first to catch my eye-dog and horse collars, harness and sled parts! And because of my enthusiasm for things adventurous, I looked long upon the prospectors' gold pans, shovels, rifles, camp equipment, and what not. Today those windows are filled with motor car accessories, tires and repair parts; yes, even thermos bottles and vacuum cleaners! There were many chance meetings with little parties of prospectors in my youth, and it always set my blood to tingling. Sometimes it was a 70-year-old sun-baked son of the Arizona desert, wrangling his stubborn, faithful jenny away from some outfitting store, at others a shovel-ended poling b0at in northern Canada, \vith the partners and the dogs towing upstream along the bank, or an old sourdough, with tug-rope around neck and hand on the spruce sapling gee-pole, mushing along behind his two or three old, plodding malamutes, dragging a little Yukon sled piled high with rusty sheet-iron stove, pick and shovel, cross-cut saw and axe, rifle, bales of dog salmon, and other paraphernalia. These meetings envisioned the panning of old creek beds and draws in the search for as yet undiscovered pay-channels; they meant the toughest kind of work sinking a hole to bedrock in some far-away valley of promise; they suggested wood fires to thaw the frozen muck and gravel and crude windlass and hand-made tub to hoist the water and the mud; but loudest of all they spoke of Adventure.

INTERESTING developments going on in European coal mines look to: (1) increasing mechanization; 12) concentration of mining; (3) improvement in safety appliances; and (4) studies in bettering roof supports and. incident to this, studies of the way a roof behaves under different conditions of support and methods of mining and back-filling. Mechanization and concentration off mining is being adapted to a considerable extent in Great Britain coincident with the development of conveyors. Belt conveyors, shaker-pan conveyors, and a combination of the two are used. For pitching seams not steep enough for the coal to run in station-chutes, the. shaker-pan conveyor is more popular. For large outputs from a contiguous face, the double-unit system of face layout-that is, the conveyors meeting at a common point-is favored.

IN times like these, the A. I. M. E. and similar societies have their greatest usefulness. . . . Individuals and companies acting alone in the development of public opinion are merely voices crying in the wilderness. United and organized they make a great force that can and does influence public action. . . . What part, if any, then, shall the A. I. M. E. take in these great stabilization processes of civilization? Shall it help to give direction and force to scientific knowledge which comes within its field of activity or shall it merely develop more of it? . . . Is it the A. I. M. E.'s function to help bring system, order and direction out of this situation so that the world can again have forward economic movement, or should it rest on its oars until other agenciess develop that public understanding and direction so necessary for economic progress? As we understand the functions of the A. I. M. E. Petro¬leum Division, they are to discover and promote knowl¬edge for the benefit of society on the mining of oil and gas. To the individual member of the Petroleum Division, there are certain advantages of social and professional contacts, but the collective purpose is that described. And the individual is benefited by membership only as the Division measures up to the purposes of its existence. Consequently, the welfare of this Division and that of its members depends on the extent to which it keeps pace with the needs of society on matters relating to the mining of oil and gas.

The search for the best practical means of storing sulfide bearing tailings, where there is no residual excess of carbonate material is discussed in this paper• Usually the sulfide content decomposes, with the aid of bacterial action, and the resulting sulfuric acid escapes, along with any heavy-metal solutes, through embankments that are usually porous to some degree• The problem is typified in the tailings of the uranium operations of Elliot Lake, Ont., where mining started some 20 years ago• The approach to tailings disposal paralleled the practice for other hydrometallurgical plants treating gold and base-metal ores• Impoundment areas were designed to retain solids, and a clear and neutral overflow was considered satisfactory practice• Now experience has shown that these areas, some of which have been idle for over a dozen years, release acids in seepage and overflows to an unacceptable degree• To protect natural water courses, neutralizing plants are operated wherever required• Lime slurry is fed continuously into the tailings outflows in a quantity sufficient to raise the pH to 8•5 and precipitate heavy metals that may be in solution• The objection to this procedure is that the plants will require servicing indefinitely, unless a better remedy is found• The problem differs only slightly from that common to base-metal concentrators in that here the ore has been leached with sulfuric acid for the recovery of uranium• Any native content of calcareous material has been digested, and only that added for final neutralization is available to maintain a pH unfavorable to bacterial activity• Chemical oxidation slowly lowers the pH and when this reaches a level of 4•5 or less, bacteria become active and greatly accelerate the formation of acid. The bacterial process is probably at least ten times as fast as the chemical oxidation• Location and Processing The operations referred to, uranium and one copper mine, are located at approximately 46°N and 82°W longitude• This is typical Canadian Shield country, a land of lakes, deeply glaciated and rocky, with sparse soil which supports mixed forest cover• Drainage is to Lake Huron, 25 miles to the south• Average temperature is 45°F, ranging from -40° to +95°F• Annual precipitation is 38 in•, about half of which is snow• The ore is Precambrian, quartz-pebble conglomerate, with mineralization in the matrix• From 5 to 10% pyrite is present• All known means of pre-concentration have been tested, but a bulk sulfuric acid leach has proved the most efficient. Tailings have from the outset been neutralized before release• Current practice is to add ground limestone to bring the pH to 4•5, and then lime to raise the value to 10•5• Environmental regulations have recently been increased and the foregoing meets the new standards• Separate measures are taken to precipitate radium• Remedial Measures Since the outstanding environmental problem is the oxidation of pyrite by bacterial action, the solution is to contain the products, or arrest the process• Given the ambient temperature, favorable half of the time, four items are essential to the activity• 1) Pyrite• 2) Moisture pH < 4•5. 3) Oxygen• 4) Bacteria• Removing any one of these out of the range of tolerance will bring the reactions under control• A variety of proposals considered, and a number tested for the arrest of the process, are: (a) render embankments impermeable, (b) provide an impermeable cover, (c) cover with an oxygen absorbing layer, (d) provide a vegetative cover, (e) flood the site, (f) remove pyrite from current tailings, (g) add excess limestone to current tailings, (h) poison the bacteria• Bank Seal-On existing impoundment areas, where the embankments are several thousand yards in length, it is believed that any program of injecting sealants can have small chance of success• However, a moisture barrier is an indicated specification for future construction, and this can be highly expensive• Surface Seal-Depending on the configuration of the deposit, the downward travel of water should be prevented, and oxygen excluded• Burying a plastic membrane just below the surface has been considered, as has the application of a liquid sealant that would penetrate the surface. The objection to these remedies is the excessive cost of dealing with large areas and the expectation of only temporary benefit as a result• Frost penetration is over 4 ft, and frost action breaks up asphalt paving and all but heavy concrete in a few years• Organic Layer-An oxygen-absorbing layer, such as bark fines from paper mills has been proposed as a surface treatment• Cultivated into the tailings such material might be expected to arrest subsurface oxidation for some years• Estimates are 100 tons per acre of bark fines, or 35 tons per acre of sawdust, and these enormous quantities do not so far give assurance of providing a long-term remedy• Vegatative Cover-Several obvious benefits would result from a good growth of grass or other vegetation on abandoned tailings• While restoring the natural green of the tract the growth would prevent wind-blown dust and reduce erosion• Subsurface oxidation should be reduced, as well as the upward movement of ground moisture as occurs in dry weather. To this end, considerable research and field testing has been carried out to arrive at a formula - a prescription which will provide a self-sustaining growth on the tailings surface, or at least one that would survive with reasonable maintenance attention. Many test plots have been run with different combinations of surface treatment and seed mixtures. Generally, by addition and close cultivation of limestone, lime, and fertilizers, technical success has been demonstrated• Plants with a high tolerance for acid soil seem the more hardy, and a pH above 3 is indicated so that nutrients can be absorbed• Recommendations are for 12 to 15 tons of

INTRODUCTION As part of a general project to simulate a concentrator, the Brenda Mines Limited secondary crushing plant, located near Peachland, B. C., was sampled during the summer/winter of 1975 and during the summer of 1978 to develop a digital crushing plant simulator specific to the Brenda operation. The purpose of this simulator was to study the influence of manipulable process variables on important responses, to permit study of alternative circuit configurations if desired and to perform off-line optimization. This chapter describes the methodology employed to develop the simulator (1,2) along with typical applications thereof. SECONDARY CRUSHING PLANT FLOWSHEET Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the Brenda Mines Ltd. secondary crushing plant circuit. The 41,000 tonne coarse ore stockpile(a) is -17.8 cm oversize (3B belt) from two 2.4 m x 6.1 m double deck vibrating screens (not shown). The screens are fed by 2 conveyor belts operated in series with two 198 cm apron feeders that handle discharge from a 152 cm x 226 cm primary gyratory crusher(520 KW). The primary crusher (not shown) treats up to 2725 tonne/hr of run of mine ore. Minus 1.9 cm undersize from the primary screens (#19 belt), referred to as the primary fines, joins secondary screen undersize (#18 belt) for conveyance to fine ore bins (not shown). Feed from the coarse ore stockpile is transferred by means of vibrating feeders and two 120 cm conveyors (#6 and #7) to transfer belts #8 and #9 (Figure 1). The belts feed two secondary 2.1 m standard heavy duty cone crushers (bl and b2). Each crusher is equipped with a modified coarse mantle liner and a standard coarse bowl liner. Mantle throw is 9.2 cm; nominal close side set is 3.2 cm. Crusher .countershafts (443 rpm) are driven by single 260 KW synchronous motors (710 rpm). Discharge from the secondary cone crushers joins discharge from four 2.1 m tertiary heavy duty shorthead cone crushers (fl, f2, f3 and f4). With the exception of the cavity (modified medium mantle liner and standard coarse bowl liner; close side set is nominal .84 cm) and motor (224 KW), these machines are similar to the secondary crushers. The combined discharge is transferred from a 183 cm conveyor to #14 belt which empties into a 1452 tonne secondary screen surge bin (c). Vibrating feeders beneath the bins feed five 2.4 m x 6.1 m double deck vibrating screens (dl, d2, d3, d4 and d5) sloped at 200 from the horizontal. In describing their procedure for measuring the lattice parameters of solid solutions, Abrahamson and Lopata report (p. 77) the final heat treatment of their alloy specimens as "700°C for 100 hr, followed by a furnace cool". The isothermal part of this treatment may be expected to precipitate solute in excess of the stable a solid-solution limit at 700°C; the subsequent slow cooling is likely to reduce the dissolved solute still further. Fig. 1 (upper) presents the data for titanium alloys so he;rt-treated and shows the lattice parameters of solid solutions containing up to 3.5 at. pct Ti; Fig. 17 (lower) shows 2 at. pct Ti as the solubility limit in a iron at 700°C. Figs. 1 and 17 are thus incompatible. The paper contains comparable incon~patibilities for zirconium alloys, for niobium alloys, and for tantalum alloys. The final heat treatment at 700°C may also be responsible for the anomalous "knee" in the lattice-parameter data for nickel alloys, Fig. 3. The "knee" composition is located near the 700°C limit of the stable a solid-solution field;37 alloys of the experimental composition range with more nickel than the "knee" composition are two-phase at 700 C and prolonged heat treatment of them at 700°C would tend to produce inhomogeneity rather than homogeneity. In Figs. 4 and 7, the composition ranges of the zirconium, hafnium, and niobium alloys examined terminate at alloy concentrations of 0.1 to 0.2 at. pct. These metals form very stable oxides and their partial removal from solid solution in iron by impurity oxygen may be expected. We believe that the authors should have reported the procedure by which they distinguished the amounts of alloying elements in solution and in oxide. The diagrams pertaining to copper in Figs. 3 and 18 (lower) are almost certainly incorrect. Three recent investigations of this system38-40 all substantially agree on the solubility of copper in a iron, finding it to be much larger than that reported by Abrahamson and Lopata. The change of the lattice parameter with composition reported by Abrahamson and Lopata is too large by a factor of three to five, as seen by comparison with the findings of other investigators.41738 Moreover, the authors violate, in Fig. 18, the accepted Fe-Cu constitution diagram37 by ignoring the eutectoid at about 850°C.

An extended study of dustproofing Freeport-seam coal has emphasized several fundamental features in the successful treating of bituminous coals. The extent of the exposed surface area and its absorption propcrties for the dust-retaining film were found to be the most critical factors affecting the efficiency of fly-dust prevention. From recently published screen data and specific surface-area measurements on United Kingdom coals, an approximation of the surface exposed by mine-run coal and by 1-in. slack was made. The total surface area exposed by an average tori of this mine-run coal was estimated at 3768 sq. yd., while a ton of 1-in. slack represents a total surface area of 8779 sq. yd. with no additions for porosity. It is important in coal treating to consider that in mine-run coal the fraction above 1/4 in. in size represents 79.5 per cent of the total weight, but only 4 per cent of the total surface, while the fraction below 150 mesh contains 47 per cent of the total surface and only 1.2 per cent of the total weight. Also, one should appreciate that, in a 1-in. slack, the domestic stoker fraction (1 in. to 8 mesh) contains 76.3 per cent of the weight and 8.2 per cent of the surface, while the fraction below 150 mesh represents 3.3 per cent by weight and 54.8 per cent by surface area. Wax extraction data on 1-in. to 0 slack from mine-run treated Freeport-searn coal showed that the coating was distributed uniformly as a function of exposed surface; hence, nonuniformly on a weight basis. This distribution of the coating on mine-run coal therefore limits the extent of treating that is desirable on bituminous coal at this point in the preparation. The treatment of Freeport mine-run coal before it reached the tipple gave a 70 to 80 per cent reduction of fly-dust in the tipple, a satisfactory treated commercial slack coal, and an indicated change in the trend of tipple degradation. The premium-treated domestic sizes required a supplemental treatment for complete dustproofness. The actual cost of the pretipple and supplemental treatments was very low per ton of coal treated, while the net or true cost was sufficiently
