Development during the year 1941 on the Texas Gulf Coast resulted in the dis covery of 27 new fields as compared to 26 fields for the year 1940. Drilling.—During the year, 1405 wells were drilled. Of this number, 1031 were completed as oil wells with 375,000 bbl. daily of new production; 50 were com pleted as gas wells and 324 were failures. The most active area was Jackson County, where 375 wells were drilled and 336 of them accounting for 190,000 bbl. daily of new production. Types of Fields.—Of the 2 7 new fields, 14 are considered to be oil fields, 8 are listed as gas-distillate fields and 5 as gas fields. This may be compared to 26 fields found in 1940, of which 14 were oil fields and 12 gas-distillate fields. Producing Sections.—Frio discoveries retained their predominant position by having 10 Frio fields discovered in comparison to 6 fields in the Wilcox, 4 in the Yegua, 5 in the Miocene and 2 in the Jackson. In the previous year 15 Frio fields were found, 4 in the Wilcox, 2 each in the Yegua, Cook Mountain and Miocene, and I in the Jackson. Production.—Production increased over 1940 approximately 10 per cent, being 113,726,893 bbl. for the year 1941 and 104,127,247 bbl. for 1940. The statistics in Tables I and 2 include distillate and condensate as oil production because no separate reports have been compiled. It is hoped that this separation may be possible some day, but as a great many fields produce both oil and distillate and these arc commingled in pipe lines, separation of statistics will be more difficult than for other areas. New Fields Big Hill, Jefferson County.—Stanolind Oil and Gas Company's No. I George D. Anderson was completed as a gas well from a Frio sand at 8705 to 8720 ft., on Dec. 24, 1941, after having been drilled to a depth of 9500 ft. Additional development is being carried on but it is not possible to evaluate this discovery at this time. Brushy Creek Field, Lavaca County.— Shell Oil Corporation's No. I D. G. McManus was completed as the discovery well in the Brushy Creek field on Oct. 29, 1941, from a Wilcox sand through perforations at 7225 to 7230 ft., making gas and 180 bbl. of 59° gravity distillate. This well was bottomed at 10,998 ft. in the Wilcox. No statement can be made at this time as to the importance of this discovery. Chenango Field, Brazoria County.—J. N. Rayzor et al. completed their No. I Sarah J. Christian through perforations at 8564 to 8572 ft. in a Frio sand, for 453 bbl. of 37.7° gravity oil, on Feb. 6, 1941, after having drilled to 9564 ft. Several wells were drilled in this area during the year but failed to establish important production. This is considered a minor discovery. Clodine Field, Fort Bend County.—Providence Oil Company's No. I Hatfield was the discovery well of the Clodine field, being completed through perforations at 7499 to 7502 ft. for 108 bbl. of 51.2° gravity distillate, on June 19, 1941. IN 1949 an orebody containing some 10 billion lb of recoverable rare earth metals was discovered in the Mountain Pass district of San Bernardino County, California.1 The following year Molybdenum Corp. of America purchased a number of claims at the deposit and a mill on the property which had been constructed to process the district's gold ores. Average composition of ore from the San Bernardino deposit is less than 0.1 pct ThO2, 25 to 35 pet calcite, 10 pet rare earth oxides, 15 to 20 pet silica, and 30 to 40 pet barite.2 Rare earth content of the ore analyzes 50.7 pet CeO2, 4.2 pet Pr6O11, 11.7 pet Nd2O3, 1.3 pet Sm2O3, and 34.3 pet La2O3, and others.2

My original intention was to give a full account of Southern furnaces, ores and cokes; but, owing to the difficulty of getting reliable information, I confine this paper to a general description of the ores used in, and immediately around, Chattanooga. Mr. L. S. Colyar, Manager of the Rising Fawn furnace, wrote me in answer to an inquiry as to what ores they were using, " Below I give you analyses of the mixture of ore we have been using for the past seven or eight years. THERE has been interest recently in the conditions under which dislocation pipe diffusion may be observed. In order to extend the measurements to temperatures below Tm/2, where pipe diffusion becomes more important, a chemical sectioning technique was developed for silver single crystals which makes possible the removal of layers of 100A or less. The procedure is briefly as follows. Silver single crystals of 99.995 pct purity were cut in the form of discs t by 4 in., electropolished, and electropolated with Ag110 to about 1000A thickness. The thickness was determined by calibrating the activity with the weight of heavier platings, up to 10,000A. Both diffused and undiffused samples were sectioned in a two-step process. Reaction with a solution of iodine in alcohol formed a thin, even layer of AgI, which was then dissolved in a KCN solution. The reaction rate of the iodine solution varied slightly over a period of time, so that the thickness of the stripped layers, while quite even and regular for a given specimen, ranged from 65 to l00W for different specimens. This variation was checked by using a thickly plated standard with each run. Layer thickness was determined from undiffused samples by the point where the layer activity drops to half the maximum. This maximum intensity also provides, with appropriate corrections, the initial concentration per layer co. Because of the small penetration distances, it is necessary to use the exact solution of Fick's law for a source of finite thickness.' For a plating of thick- where c is the concentration at depth x. flj the error function, D the apparent diffusion coefficient, and t the time. The diffusion coefficient was obtained from the concentration-penetration data by extrapolating to x = 0 where c/co = erf h/2(Dt)1/2 Enough points were taken to impart confidence in the accuracy of the intersection, generally about ten layers. Four temperatures were used as in Table I. For best accuracy, t and h were chosen to give values of the parameter (Dt)1/2/h between 1.0 and 1.7. A typical concentration-penetration curve is shown in Fig. 1. The diffusion coefficients calculated from Eq. [I] are plotted in Fig. 2. For comparison, the high-temperature data of Tomizuka and sonder 2 which go down to 630°C are plotted as the solid line 2(a) from their expression D = 0.40 exp (-44,090/RT). Also for comparison, the lowest temperature point of Hoffman and Tumbull3 is plotted. It is apparent that our data diverge appreciably from the high-temperature extrapolation by 373°C. A better straight line fit for the low-temperature portion is obtained by subtracting the extrapolated volume diffusion coefficient from the apparent. or measured coefficient, and plotting the difference, curve (h) of

The occurrence of minerals of nickel and cobalt at Mine La Motte is probably known to every mineralogist. I will not attempt to describe these minerals, but, before entering on my subject, will briefly mention the ores, etc., which call for metallurgical treatment and enter into the composition of our mattes. Our staple lead-ore, the dressed galena, is the chief source of nickel and cobalt. It carries but a small percentage of these metals, viz.: 0.2 to 0.3 percent. usually, though when much copper pyrites is contained in the gangue, the amount of nickel and cobalt may be as great as 1.0 to 1.5 per cent. Next in importance is the ((middle product" of the dressingworks, consisting of the sulphides of iron (and copper) with gangue and galena. This usually carries 20 to 23 per cent. of lead, 0.5 to 1.0 per cent. of copper and 2.5 to 3.5 per cent. of nickel and cobalt. A larger percentage of copper always carries with it an increase of nickel and cobalt. In some few cases 12 to 15 per cent. of copper gives 6.5 to 8.0 per cent of these metals. The January-February number of the Journal of the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa, 1943, is made up entirely of a discussion of Ball Wear in Cylindrical Mills. Following the principal paper by T. K. Prentice are several remarkably pertinent and carefully prepared discussions. Few persons in this country would be likely to see this publication, and since the information presented is new and of current interest, it seems desirable to abstract and review this publication for the benefit of the members of the A.I.M.E. The purpose of the investigation is stated in the first two paragraphs of Prentice's paper, as follows: Early in 1941, The Chamber of Mines Steel Products, Limited, initiated a series of tests under semi-working scale conditions to determine, if possible, those physical and chemical properties of a ball which make it resistant to wear when used in a cylindrical mill as a grinding medium, with the primary object of incorporating those beneficial qualities in the balls being produced at their works. This paper describes the tests carried out and discusses the results obtained. From these results it was possible to formulate a new theory relating to ball wear in cylindrical mills. This theory is presented in the second portion of this paper. Practical Ball-mill Tests in a Cylindrical Mill Part I of the paper begins with a discussion of the methods used for the manu- facture of grinding balls in South Africa. The following paragraph is of particular interest. The cast steel ingots, 4¼ in. square by 3 ft. 6 in. long, are re-heated in a gas-fired sloping stationary-hearth furnace and then rolled in a six-pass continuous mill into 25/8 in. round billets. Some of these billets are then removed and cut into suitable lengths for forging into 4 in., 3¼ in. , 3 in. or 2½ in. balls by means of three Drop and two Beche hammers, but the greater number, whilst still at about 1,000, pass directly into a set of scroll rolls which produce, in an ingenious manner, finished 3 in. balls direct from the 25/8 in. billets. Except in special cases, all balls are allowed to cool in the atmosphere and are not water quenched. Details of the Tests In order to enable the reader to evaluate properly the results and conclusions in the rest of the paper and in the discussions following the paper, most of the information presented by the author under this heading is quoted: The testing unit was a nominal 30 in. diameter and 18 in. long centre discharge Denver Ball Mill. The ore pulp to the ball mill comprised a small portion of the normal feed to one of the fourteen City Deep 5 ft. 6 in. X 22 ft. tube mills, and the grinding media consisted of the balls under test plus other balls to give the desired load. The strutural and cr~stallo~aphic features of the plates of austenite produced by the martensite to aus-tenite or reverse martensitic tramformation have been determined in an Fe-33 wt pct Ni alloy. Micro-focus X-ray techniques and single-surface trace analysis 072 bulk samples yielded two distinct habit planes, (0.174, 0.309, 0.~35)~ and (0.375, 0.545, 0.749jM. The former plane uas the one predorninantly observed and its existence was verified by transn~ission electron microscopy. The orientation relation-ship between the reversed austenite and the parent martensite was approximately the same as the Nishiyamna and other relationships reported for the direct tramformation. Replica and thin-joil obser-vations show that both high densities of tangled dis-locations and occasional twins constitute the fine structure of the reversed austenite. Application of the phenomenological theory to a variant of the predominant habit plane defines an irrational plane and direction for the second shear in accordance with the comnplexity of the fine structure. The shear accompanying the reverse martensitic transformation is at least 0.51, the maximnum value of- the tangent oJ the tilt angle measured on surface replicas. A mechanism relating the fine transformation twins in martensite to the nucleation of reversed austenite of the predominant habit is proposed. The reversal of Fe-Ni martensite takes place both at the edges of martensite plates and in a piecewise fashion within them.' The shear-type nature of the reverse transformation is verified by the surface relief which accompanies both edge-type reversal2 and the fragmentation of plates of martensite' as a result of rapid heating above the A, (austenite start temperature). The orientation relationship between the edge-type reversal product and the parent martensite, as determined by transmission electron microscopy, is reported to be within 4 deg of either the Kurdyumov-Sachs or Nishiyama relationships,' but there is no work at present in the literature relating to the crystallography of the platelike reversed austenite. The fine structure of reversed austenite after heating to 50°C above the Af is reported4 to be composed primarily of tangled and jogged dislocations in concentrations up to 10" per sq cm. A replica investigation of partially reversed Fe-Ni martensites5 corroborates the increase in dislocation density following reversal and presents indications of other possible modes of fine structure. This paper reports on an investigation performed to examine in detail the morphology and crystallography of the plates of reversed austenite and the shear which accompanies their formation in a matrix of Fe-Ni martensite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Discs of a high-purity Fe-32.9 wt pct Ni single crystal served as the starting material. The single crystal had been produced in the course of an earlier investigation6 and the carbon content was determined at the time to be 0.006 wt pct. The M,, and the A,, were respectively -120" and 300°C. Partial transformation to martensite was performed at -125°C and reversal of some of the martensite was accomplished by heating in the temperature range 340" to 355°C. Most samples were heated to the reversal temperature by immersion' in a salt bath for 2 min. For surface-relief studies some polished and etched Samples were heated in a tube furnace for ten min in a hydrogen atmosphere maintained over the samples throughout the heating and cooling cycles. Samples were prepared for metallographic examination by electropolishing and etching with an HC1-HNOs-H20 et~hant.~ On one of the surface-relief samples two sets of fiducial scratches were placed on the etched sample by drawing it over a slurry of 0.06 p alumina on a "microclothJ'. The orientations of individual plates of martensite were determined by X-ray analysis. A Rigaku-Denki microbeam X-ray generator in conjunction with a Micro-Laue camera with facility for precision location of the sample in front of the beam was employed for this purpose. The collimator size was 30 p and the specimen to film distance was 5 mm. The Laue photograms were enlarged to an equivalent 3-cm specimen to film distance for analysis. The orientation of each of the plates of martensite was compared to that of the parent austenite and the relationship be -tween the two phases was, in all cases, within a few degrees of those predicted for the direct transformation. The orientation relationship between one of the larger plates of reversed austenite and its parent martensite was determined in a similar manner. The habit plane of the islands of reversed austenite in the X-rayed plates of martensite was determined by a single-surface trace analysis. Each reversal island had with the parent phase one comparatively straight boundary which was presumed to represent the habit plane trace. The pole locus technique7 was applied to traces from six different plates of martensite to determine the indices of the habit plane. A 40-cm stereographic net was employed for this analysis The morphology and fine structure of the reversed austenite were studied by electron microscopy of pre-shadowed direct carbon replicas,5 and the macroscopic shear was evaluated by a two-stage replica technique similar to that employed in electron fractog-

THERE are three primary plant nutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—expressed in any fertilizer compound as percent N, percent P 2 O 5, and percent K 2 O, in that order. This article will be concerned with the first two. The chief source of P 2 O 5 is phosphate rock. As found in the western states phosphate rock is essentially tricalcium phosphate-calcium fluoride (fluor-patite). As such, it is quite water insoluble.

FROM equilibrium measurements on the system NaF-Na 3A l Fo-A 1 2 O 3-Na CO 3-CO 2 with high contents of NaF, Forland, Storegraven, and Urnesl concluded that complexes are formed containing two oxygen, three aluminum, and a less defined number of fluorine per complex. The same number of oxygen atoms per complex was also found by cryoscopic measurements for mixtures high in NaALF 6. In a recent paper by Stokes: some other complex ions, Al2O2F42- and AlOF2-, have been suggested. Here an additional argument in favor of the complex ALO2F. suggested by Forland, Storegraven, and Urnes will be given. When fused Na3AlF6 containing some A12O3, is cooled slowly, the solid phase will consist of the two components as separate phases. The melting point and the heat of fusion of Al2O3 are so high that this component will form the stable solid phase even though in the liquid state the complex may have a high stability. If, however, the fused mixture is quenched, the decomposition of the oxygen-containing complex and the formation of solid Al2O3 does not proceed fast enough, and a solid solution of A12O3 in Na3AlF6 is obtained. Zintel and Morawietz3 obtained cryolite containing 10 pct AL2O3 in this way. The density and the lattice parameters of the A12O3 containing cryolite were also measured, and from this it was concluded that the Al2O3 enters the cryolite lattice as Al3AlO0 groups replacing Na3AlF6 groups. However, the experimental data could as well be explained by assuming that one Na+ ion and two of its neighboring F- ions are replaced by one Al3+ ion and two O2- ions. An activation energy of 27,400 5 1000 cal per mole was obtained for the creep of poly crystaLline aluminum over the temperature range of 273° to 350°K, at strains varying from 0.003 to 0.230. Stresses varied fronz 2250 to 6000 psi, strain rates from 0.1145 x 10-5 to 29.5 x 10~s min.-1. A strain temperature-compensated time correlatzon was oblained indicating that the structure was depedent solely upon the strain at a given stress; X-ray diffraction analyses and tensile tests on precrept specimens verified this. PREVIOUS investigations1 have revealed that the apparent activation energies for creep of high-purity polycrystalline aluminum are insensitive to the applied stress, strain, and strain rate. On the other hand, the apparent activation energy is dependent on the temperature1,2 as shown by the data reproduced in Fig. 1. Each plateau of this curve is associated with a unique rate-controlling dislocation mechanism for thermally activated creep. It is now very well-established that over the high-temperature range, where the activation energy is about 35,500 cal per mole, the creep rate is controlled by the dislocation climb mechanism. 3 Over the intermediate range of temperatures, from about 260° to 370°K, another unique activation energy, namely 28,000 cal per mole, is obtained. Current evidence strongly supports the contention that cross slip is the rate controlling mechanism for creep in this case: 1) Crystal recovery can occur by a number of mechanisms prominent among which are climb and cross slip. Astrom,4 using the Borelius micro-calorimeter, reported rapid crystal recovery of cold-worked polycrystalline A1 at 340° to 370°K giving an activation energy of 28,000 cal per mole and additional recovery at 455° to 478°K giving an activation energy of 3 6,000 cal per mole. Whereas the latter recovery process was clearly associated with the dislocation climb mechanism, the former, 28,000 cal per mole process could have arisen as a result of the cross-slip mechanism. 2) Single crystals of high-purity A1 favorably oriented for octahedral glide exhibit an activation energy for creep of about 3400 cal per mole over the range from 0° to 400°K and that of about 28,O:O cal per mole over the range from 600° to 775°K . Whereas the lower activation energy process is accompanied by the development of sharp slip-band traces, the 28,000 cal per mole process was uniquely characterized by extensive cross slip. 3) Theoretical calculations by Seeger and schoeck6 suggest an apparent activation energy for cross slip in A1 of about 24,000 cal per mole and another theoretical estimate by Friedel 7 gives the observed 28,000 cal per mole as the theoretical activation energy. It is therefore consistent with this evidence to, at least tentatively, ascribe the 28,000 cal per mole creep process in A1 to the operation of cross slip as the rate controlling mechanism. Although creep has been rather well-explored in the dislocation climb range, very little, excepting perhaps the activation energy, is known about creep in the cross slip range. This investigation was undertaken, therefore, to reconfirm the activation energy for creep in polycrystalline A1 in the intermediate temperature range and to study the strain-time relationship for creep at a constant stress in the cross slip region. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND TECHNIQUE The three types of high-purity A1 alloy specimens described in Table I were used in this investigation. Specimens were milled from 0.100 in. thick cold-rolled sheets with their tensile axes in the rolling direction following which they were given a recrys-tallization and grain growth heat treatment at temperatures well above those which were subsequently employed in the creep tests.

I should like to ask at what point, in iron contents, it is usual practice to quit sending that open-hearth slag to the blast furnace? L. F. Reinartz.—NO problem is involved in disposing of open-hearth slag to our blast furnaces because, on account of the grades of iron and steel made by our company, the iron oxide in the slag is sufficiently high to make it very acceptable to the blast-furnace operator. I have been told that if the total iron oxide in the slag is under 18 to 20 per cent, it is not economical to use such slag in a blast furnace. J. T. Most limestone carries some pyrite (sulfide sulfur) which we thought was what gave the sulfur pick-up. L. F. Reinartz.—I have had no experience, personally, in the use of limestone high in sulfates. I have been told, on several occasions, by other open-hearth men, that the sulfates will be reduced and increase the sulfur content of the metal. We have never found any pyrite in our limestone. A. For more than 80 years the Bessemer process has depended upon the ability, skill, and judgment of the blower, although as early as the I860's it was recognized that the process would benefit by some type of instrumental contro1.l IIowever, instruments with sufficient recording speeds did not exist, so the end-point determination was always dependent upon the blower's eye. This placed an obstacle in the way of precise experimental work, because of the absence of the necessary records and reference points as reported by Work.2 The use of the photocell provided the instantaneous record of the blow that made this experimental work possible and provided more scientific control for the process as discussed by Graham,3 A brief description of the progress of the blow will illustrate the recording function of the instrument. The silicon in the iron is being oxidized during the first minutes of the blow, as pointed out by Henning4 in a table showing the order of metalloid elimination. The product of this oxidation is a solid that remains in the converter, so there is virtually no flame during this part of the blow. This low flame luminosity is illustrated by the flame recording shown in Fig. I, where the silicon blow is plainly marked. The dull flame of the silicon blow gradually gives way to the brilliant carbon flame as the increasing quantities of carbon monoxide formed inside the converter burn to dioxide upon contact with the atmosphere above the vessel. When the carbon reaches some low value under 0.20 per cent, there is insufficient menoxide formed to maintain the dioxide flame, so its intensity drops. Throughout the flame drop carbon continues to burn, until at some value around 0.05 per cent an arrest occurs in the recorded drop. This point has been designated as the end point. The period of time from this end point until the vessel is turned upon its side and blowing has stopped has been called the afterblow. This afterblow is used as a measure of the degree of metal oxidation, and uniformity demands that it be controlled within narrow limits. Iron and blowing conditions are likely to change several times during a turn, necessitating corresponding changes in end-point control. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss these changes, the factors that make them necessary, and their bearing upon the quality of steel. Carbon-FeO Relationship In the Bessemer process oxidation relationships are precise. Fig. 2 shows a graph of the carbon-FeO relationship. The familiar "bomb-test" method, described by Mccutcheon and Rautio,5 was used for obtaining these and all other dissolved FeO values herein reported, all tests being taken from the converter before deoxidation unless otherwise noted. The rate of drilling operations in the West Texas district during 1940 was approximately equal to that of 1939. The total number of wells dillled in the area during the year was 1834, of which 1716 were completed as oil producers, 12 were gas wells and 106 were dry holes. The number of wildcat wells drilled during the year was comparatively small. The drilling of inside locations in proven areas and the drilling of wells for the purpose of extending the productive limits in producing fields constituted the bulk of development during 1940. Gaines County led all other counties in the district in the total number of oil-well completions. The oil production totaled 83,345,381 bbl., the highest figure for any year since proration was begun. The 1940 oil production exceeded the 1939 production by approximately four million barrels. Discoveries While comparatively few new oil-producing areas were discovered during 1940, it appears that the oil production found in simpson lime in the Abell field, pecos County, was an outstanding discovery for the year. This was the second Ordovician discovery in Pecos County. Taubert, McKee & Siemoneit located its discovery well, V. W. Crockett No. 1, set. 4 1/2 H. & T. C. R.R, co, survey in the Imperial area of northwestern Pecos County. The top of pay was encountered at 5270 ft., and the well was bottomed at 5357 ft. in simpson lime, on act. 17, I940. The initial production was 928 bbl. of 43" gravity sweet oil in 11 hr. 23 min., flowing naturally through 2-in. tubing with gas-oil ratio of 783 cu. ft. per barrel. Following the completion of the discovery well, large blocks of land were leased in the area, and several locations were made toward the close of the year. There is every indication that the Abell field will become a major producing field in the West Texas district. There was no pipe-line outlet for the field at the end of the year. Shipley-Silurian field, discovered by the Gulf Oil Corporation, appears to be another major addition to the oil reserves in 1940. The discovery well, Wristen Brothers No. 5, is in sec. 18, block 5, H. & T. C. R.R. Co. survey in Ward County. The well was drilled to a total depth of 9187 ft. and was plugged back to 7075 ft. The Silurian lime section was acidized with 3000 gal., from 6993 to 7075 ft., and on Dec. 5, 1940, the well was completed for initial production of 3040 bbl- of 32.2" gravity oil in 24 hr., flowing through tubing. Todd Deep field, Crockett County, was discovered by the Continental Oil Co. et al. The discovery well, J. S. Todd No. 2, set. 29, block WX1 G.C. & S.F. R.R. Co. survey, was completed on April 3, 1940. The top of pay was encountered at 5623 ft., and the well was bottomed at 5691 ft. for initial production of 1613 bbl. of 40.6' gravity oil flowing naturally through 2-in. tubing. The pay section was found in Strawn lime of Pennsylvanian age. There were six producing wells in the field at the end of the year. This appears to be another major discovery in 1940.
