BUSTS of James Douglas and his friend, Ben Williams, placed in front of the library at Bisbee, Ariz., were unveiled there on April 8, and the connection of the two men with the development of the. Copper Queen mine was reviewed. Judge Bisbee, the brother-in-law of Ben Wil-liams, secured an option on the Copper Queen claim, financed its development and sent Ben Williams in to build the smelter, which turned out its first copper in November, 1880. Dr. Douglas, who was then superintendent of the Chemi-cal Copper Co., at Phoenixville, Pa., had a refining plant and, looking for more metal to refine, came to Bisbee early in 1881, where he negotiated a contract to refine the Copper Queen copper.

THE relation of annealing temperature to conductivity of copper wire has been determined. Conductivity hard was 98.26 per cent. After a 10-min. heating at 200°C. it was 98.69. By annealing 10 min. at 300° C. a large increase, to 100.93, occurred. Maximum conductivity, 101.15, was attained after a 500° C. anneal; thereafter it decreased to 100.53 after a 950° C. anneal. If copper is gassed the decrease is much more than this. Materials and Methods The work was done on high grade electrolytic copper, 99.942 per cent. copper plus silver, silver 0.0008 per cent. It was hot-rolled to >/4 in., then cold drawn to 0.080 in. The wire was cut into 25 5-ft. lengths and numbered 1 to 25 as cut. Four samples were tested hard. The others were wound into 5-in. diameter coils. For the 100° C. heating a coil was put into water, the water brought to boiling, and the wire kept at this temperature for 10 min. For the higher temperatures the coils were placed in envelopes of sheet copper, a little water added, and the envelopes sealed by folding over the edges twice, and hammering them together. This kept the air out very well. The envelope and wire 'were brought to the desired temperature; this was maintained for 10 min., then the whole was water-quenched.

THE sixteenth annual meeting of the Woman's Aux¬iliary, A. I. M. E., was held Tuesday morning, Feb. 16, at the Engineering Societies Building. The meeting was well attended, there being 99 registered from the metropolitan area and 78 from the sections throughout the United States. Mrs. Sharpless, the secretary, read the minutes of the annual meeting held a year ago, after which Mrs. Bassett, the president, gave her address of welcome. Mrs. Bassett said in part: "I would like, at this time, to welcome you all to this, our sixteenth annual meeting, and to express my appreciation to all the national officers and members of the board of directors for their loyal support and for the excellent work done by the chairmen of sections and their members. It is with much pleasure that I look back upon my visits with the sections in Washington, Arizona, Northern and Southern California, Chicago, Colorado, Western Pennsylvania and Utah before I assumed the office of president. During the last year I have much enjoyed meeting with the sections in Boston, Washington and New York. It is our duty to see that the achievement for 1932 be equal to that of the year that has just passed."

IN this paper are presented the results of a complete statistical survey of the enrolment, courses and degrees, and the employment situation of recent graduates in all of the 46 institutions in the United States, including Alaska, and four of the six schools in Canada that grant degrees in mineral technology. The data were collected by the writer by means of a questionnaire in December, 1933, to which all the institutions, except one, replied. Included also are data of a similar study made by the writer in May, 1933, for the S. P. E. E. summer session of mining and metallurgical teachers at the University of Wisconsin and published in the Journal of Engineering Education for December. 1933. Some of the data of a paper of the writer's entitled, "The Trend of Mineral Engineering Student Enrolment in the United States," read at the A. I. M. E. meeting on Feb. 16. 1931, are given for comparison. Acknowledgment is made to all the administrative officers of the institutions who took the time from their busy lives to supply the in- formation asked for. An investigation has been made of 500 samples of universal and sheared plates of basic Bessemer and basic open-hearth steel manufactured by the Pottstown Iron Company, the carbon-limits being 0.07 to 0.18 per cent. Through the courtesy of Mr. W. H. Morris, President, I am able to lag before the Institute the results of these tests. The samples tested were all taken from the finished material, and the chemical determinations were made on drillings from the broken test-pieces, which were sent to the chemist without giving him the heat-numbers. The results are such as to encourage me to keep on with the work, and, if possible, to have it carried out on other steels. It is kith this view that I now offer my tables in their incomplete form. My first table mas constructed by grouping the tests according to chemical analysis in various. ways, and making a rough tabulated statement, from which the ultimate strengths were worked out and carefully compared with the actual results of the tension-tests. From data thus obtained, one table after another was worked out, and by this method of "cutting and trying" I finally arrived at the results which I now present in Table I. (p. 771). I do not claim absolute accuracy, but my approximations have proved to be so close that the figures are practical data for current use at the works. The indications are that a pure iron, without carbon, phosphorus, manganese, or silicon, if it could be obtained, would give 38,000 pounds ultimate strength. This is assumed as a base, and to it is added the effect of each of the above elements, as explained below. The upper part of Table I. gives the ultimate strength due to carbon and phosphorus, and is the same for both basic Bessemer and basic open-hearth steels. The lower part gives the increase in ultimate strength due to manganese. By adding this to the amount obtained from the upper part, we have the ultimate strength of basic Bessemer

(communication to the Secretary): Mr. Miller's improved method of the cyanide-assay for copper will, without doubt, be much appreciated by assayers and chemists who are engaged at copper mines and works. The writer, as one who, at one time, had much work of that kind to do, entertains no doubt of its practical value. In enumerating the factors which affect the accuracy of cyanide-titration, Mr. Miller omits to mention time. This I have always considered an essential one; i.e., in order to secure accuracy, I have believed it to be necessary to run the cyanidesolution at the same rate of speed in standardizing as in the titration of the samples. I have accomplished this, without the use of a time-keeper and without noticing the volume of the solution, in the following simple manner: In running the cyanide-solution from the burette, the stream was so regulated, by manipulation of the cock, that it retained its continuity for a distance of about one inch below the orifice, and, below that, broke into individual drops. This means that a constant pressure is maintained at the orifice of the burette, so that, during equal intervals of time, equal volumes of the solution pass through. The stream of cyanide-solution was left to flow in the manner indicated until the blue ammoniacal copper-solution began to show a distinct change in color, after which the cyanide was added by drops at regular intervals until the desired end-reaction. When several burettes are used they should have orifices of equal diameter; otherwise, the timefactor must be considered separately for each. In accordance with Mr. Miller's views, I have always considered the cyanide-method as of very satisfactory accuracy for all copper-assaying in which I did not employ the electrolytic method. PETROLEUM ENGINEERING deals with the production, transportation, and refining of crude oil. Refining is chiefly the work of the chemical engineer; production, that of the petroleum engineer. Production engineering only is discussed in this paper. Petroleum production engineering is closest related to and, in fact, is a branch of mining engineering. Formerly, many petroleum engineers were trained as mining engineers or mining geologists. The profession is related also to mechanical and civil engineering to about the same extent that mining engineering is. Petroleum production draws upon the mechanical branch for drilling and pumping machinery and upon civil engineering for the construction of transportation lines, water supplies, and water-disposal plants. Fundamentally, petroleum production engineering deals with the removal of the oil from the reservoir rocks, just as mining is concerned with the removal of ore. The process of oil production demands a specialized knowledge just as distinct from mechanical and civil engineering as mining is distinct from operating a Diesel engine. Even though the chief tools of the petroleum engineer are the drill and the pump, these may be of little avail, and certainly not efficient, if their selection and use is not based on a knowledge of the physical chemistry of oil, the geology of the formations, the structure of the oil sand, the hydrodynamics of the reservoir, and the interrelation of all these many factors.

SAFETY in coal mining received especial attention by the public in general and the mining industry in particular during 1940 and early in 1941, owing primarily to the six explosion disasters which occurred last year with a total of 276 fatalities. This was the largest number of fatalities due to explosions in bituminous coal mines since 1928, when 347 lives were so lost. But facilities due to explosions have had a definite decreasing trend since 1907, in spite of bad years such as 1917, 1924, 1932, 1937, and 1940. Although the upswing in explosion fatalities in 1940 is lamented by all, none will admit it represents a trend and it will serve mainly to stimulate ways and means of further reducing these disasters.

A design of a multiple-bomb leaching unit particularly suited for the study of heterogeneous reactions, i.e. sol id-liquid-gas interfaces at high temperatures and pressures is presented. The component parts and overall design are described and illustrated in detail. The system has been tested by a limited number of experiments and found to work satisfactorily. Heterogeneous reactions at solid-liquid-gas interfaces, at high temperatures and pressures, are studied in either autoclaves1'4 or bombs5'9. Autoclaves are usually fairly large vessels which have a stirring arrangement incorporated in the design. Mechanical design limits the use of these vessels to relatively low temperatures and pressures. They are particularly well suited to rate or kinetic studies. Bombs can be designed to be operated at high temperatures and pressures, and are smaller vessels; because of this, stirring arrangements are not easily incorporated. In this paper a multiple-bomb system is described, that has been designed to incorporate the desirable features of both the autoclave and the bomb. The described unit has flexibility for an over all study of leaching. Most of the component units in this assemblage are standard equipment, designed and produced by well known manufacturers. No claim is made to the design of this equipment, and although described in some detail, this is done merely for clarity in the elucidation of the system presented. The general layout of the multiple-bomb assemblage is shown in Fig. 1A and 1B. The basic units in this system are: 1) 6 stainless steel 100 ml bombs (Fig. 4)

THIS article presets a view of a problem encountered in petroleum refining in the deterioration of equipment used in condensation of vapors and cooling of liquids. Discussion is limited to the problems of shell- and tube-type exchangers and condensers. In this service shell- and .tube-type equipment is gradually displacing other types and, for this reason, its economic importance ill oil-refining practice is also increasing. Considering oil - refinery practice during the last two decades one can readily see many important improvements in the apparatus used. Briefly, the present equipment is safer, more efficient, and Ignore economical. Improvement in apparatus used for the condensation of distillates has, in my opinion, been less than that in other essential distilling apparatus. So it is hoped that this discussion will stimulate research among the producers as well as among the consumers of this equipment with a view to ameliorating this condition.

(New York Meeting, February, 1913) This old and well-known method of determining, silver is, in bullion work, so far superior to the furnace-assay that it is looked upon with reverential awe by many, if not by most, users, and its-ease of execution, with proper equipment, commends it highly where much commercial bullion work on silver is required. The method is so thoroughly well known that a, description of it here may seem to be unnecessary, but many thousands of determinations are annually made by it in the U. S. Mint Service and its practice is there reduced to an art. This is necessary both for the sake of economy of time, acid because high-grade work with it requires constant practice. It is useless for a person who uses it only occasionally to expect to attain high accuracy with it, without spending more time upon a determination than is warranted in a busy commercial laboratory. It is always employed in the Mint service whenever possible, but its chief field is in the determination of silver in standard silver (ingots and coin), which is 900 fine in silver and 100 fine in copper, and I shall first briefly outline its use on this metal and then take up various points in detail, especially as related to the accuracy of the results obtained.

A REVIEW of process metallurgy of iron and steel during 1944 in many ways reflects the political and military developments of the year. Early in 1944 the tremendous wartime emergency expansion program was virtually completed and the industry directed its efforts to maintaining maximum production wherever needed. The vigorous production programs inaugurated to support the Normandy invasions did not persist as Allied armies approached Germany. General public apathy which developed with the prospect of an early ending of the European fighting was reflected in a general relaxation in armament programs. Toward the end of the year, as the prospect of a prolonged war became real, the entire program revived considerably and the need for steel became acute. Between January 1940 and October 1944 more than 12,400,000 tons had been added to the nation's steelmaking capacities, and over 12,700,000 tons added to the blast-furnace facilities. The total cost of this enormous program was more than two billion dollars. By July 1, 1944, total steelmaking capacity had exceeded 94,000,000 tons, with blast-furnace capacity rated at 68,400,000. Annual steel production, which was 88,900,000 tons in 1943, increased slightly during the past year and was estimated at 89,500,000. Production of pig iron also increased somewhat from 61,800,000 tons in 1943 to an estimated output of 62,500,000 in 1944. This review deals with a few of the numerous factors involved in maintaining the wartime iron and steel program at the level necessary to accomplish this enormous output.

Discussion of the paper of H. M. Chance, Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 23, September, 190S, pp. 791-808. CHARLES CATLETT, Staunton,Va. (communication to the Secretary *):-Mr. Chance's suggestions that the brown hematite ores of the Potsdam formation are due to the alteration in place of iron sulphide, and that their extension may reasonably be expected to contain valuable deposits of unaltered sulphide, are interesting; but the facts marshaled by him are too limited to justify more than the hope that they may serve as a commercial source of sulphur. It is true that these deposits have been the source of large amounts of iron-ore; and it. is common, as stated by him, for the mining operations to extend to a shallow depth only; but this is largely due to the fact that the surface-material represents an accumulation from the breaking down and collection of the ore which formerly reached a much higher level. With, increasing depth comes a decreasing thickness of valuable material. This is especially appreciated by a glance at Mr. Chance's drawings. This is the reason why so many disappointments have resulted when these ores have been followed to greater depths. Even if the ore is largely derived from oxidation in place, it is impossible to ignore the great number of concretionary forms, as well as those showing the evidence of secondary solution and deposition now taking place, such, for instance, as the part replacements of fragments of quartzite derived from the underlying beds. Concretionary form does not necessarily mean long transportation, and may be a variation of material in place; but commonly it is an evidence of collection, and tends to imply that more or less concentration has taken place. ALLOY steels have become essential to industry in meeting the rigid requirements on materials imposed by our, advanced technology. In comparison with the total ingot capacity of the steel industry, the volume of alloy steels is relatively small although for many years annual alloy-ingot tonnage has, been in seven figures. However, the monetary value of the alloy-steel production is exceedingly high and the benefits derived from the products are relatively great. The trend in total ingot production since 1932 has been generally upward with only two major interruptions. That of the year 1938 was due to a decrease in general business activity whereas that of 1946 resulted largely from work stoppages. THE Transactions of the Institute afford abundant evidence of the general recognition by mining engineers of the importance of a safety-lamp which will not only give warning of the presence of fire-damp, but will also indicate the proportion in which it is present.' Mining-men are only too familiar with the frequent and sudden changes that constantly occur at the working-face of a gaseous mine. Nothing illustrates more forcibly the pregnant condition of the strata enfolding the seam and the seam itself, than the fact that a circulation of perhaps 150,000 cu. ft. of air may contain 2 or even 3 per cent. of marsh-gas, representing a volume of from 3,000 to 4,000 cu. ft. of this gas pouring-out each minute from the natural strata into the mine-workings. It would, indeed, be strange if this great outflow of gas were always constant, and it creates no surprise that such earth-breathings, as they may be called, are spasmodic and irregular in their wane and flow. There are other causes that act to vary the gaseous condition of mine-air. Gas has a tendency, often very manifest in mine-workings and airways, to stratify and, at times, to travel long distances in veins or streams. It is common to catch and lose the gas in the lamp when making a test. At times two lamps, held side by side in an air current, will indicate different gaseous conditions of the passing air. When testing for gas, the lamp may suddenly fill with flame, in a mine-chamber, where a moment before a careful test showed the presence of but 1 per cent. of gas. At the AIME meeting in Tampa in Oct. 1966, an empirically developed equation was presented which allowed the calculation of free settling velocity for any sized particle: 1 [ ] This equation requires the use of two parameters a and p which are coefficients derived from boundary layer theory.2 It was possible to develop values of a and p for several minerals by back calculation of published data. The original equation had one major flaw. When the fluid density exceeds the density of the solids, the solution to the equation becomes imaginary. A flaw was indicated also by the fact that galena and sylvite both having cubic cleavage, did not have similar values for a and b. Galena gave calculated values of a = 1.082 and g = 3.11, while sylvite gave values of a = 1.870 and p = 2.56. These flaws prompted further study of the equation, resulting in the following empirical modification: [ ] It is obvious a real solution of the equation is possible for all values of ps and p. When PL > PS, V is negative, indicating that the particles will rise against the attraction of gravity. The validity of the modification is borne out by the fact that when values of a and p were back calculated for galena and sylvite using the modified equation, both minerals gave values of a = 1.038 and p = 3.01. With the modification shown in Eq. 2, Newton's friction factor becomes [ ]

EVER since the technique of quenching metals and alloys from the melt (splat cooling) was perfected a decade ago, it has been recognized that the grain size of products solidified by this technique may be extremely small.' The further observation that fcc metals quenched from the liquid state contain very few dislocations has led to the inference2 that metals are subjected to negligible or no stresses during the rapid solidification characteristic of the "gun" or "piston-and-anvil" technique. Evidence for the incidence of appreciable densities of stacking faults has, however, been obtained in case of some splat-cooled fcc and hcp alloys,3 although not for pure metals. In the light of these earlier observations it was considered desirable to study X-ray line-broadening effects, if any, in fcc metals rapidly cooled from the melt. In the present work pure silver (>99.99 pct), aluminum (>99.99 pct) and lead (>99.9 pct) were quenched from the liquid state from temperatures about 50°C above the melting point by the "gun technique" and the resulting foils were subjected to X-ray examination in a Philips Diffractometer. The quenched foils (up to -10 u thick) did not generally stick to the substrate surface and could be easily transferred to the Diffractometer without introducing any plastic deformation. The profiles of the first five reflections from the foils were recorded in each case with Cu Ka, radiation at the slowest available scanning speed of 1/8 deg per min. To correct for instrumental broadening, profiles were also recorded from the metals annealed in vacuo at suitable temperatures. The integral breadths of the X-ray reflections were arrived at by a procedure described earlier.' There was a distinct suggestion of preferred orientation in the recorded intensities of reflections from aluminum and lead foils. Such an effect was not observed in case of silver. In addition, the integral breadths of X-ray reflections from splat-cooled aluminum and lead were not significantly different from those recorded for the annealed metals. The analysis was therefore continued only for silver where the X-ray line broadening was appreciable. The pure diffraction broadening, B, was evaluated for each X-ray reflection (hkl) from silver from the observed, B, and instrumental, b, breadths with the aid of each of the three equations due to Scherrer,5 Anantharaman and Christian,6 and Warren and Biscoe,7 respectively: Bs= B-b BAC=B- b2/B Table I gives the values of particle size, 71, the lattice strain, E, arrived at by the use of the following well-known relations and on the assumption that all observed diffraction broadening could be attributed to lattice strain or particle size, respectively: E = 1/4 cos ? n= B cos ? where A is the wavelength of X-radiation and 0 is the Bragg angle. As no significant peak shifts or asymmetry could be detected in the profiles from the foils, the possibility of any significant contribution due to twins or stacking faults was ruled out. The absence of faults is by no means surprising since pure silver is known to develop stacking faults only on severe deformation and the stacking fault densities recorded so far for even silver filings have been extremely low.' The very low values for percentage mean deviation from the mean value for the particle size in Table I strongly suggest that all observed broadening in splat-cooled silver can be attributed only to small particle size. This conclusion receives further support from the lowest mean deviation recorded for data computed from the Scherrer equation based on Cauchy profiles that are considered characteristic of particle size broadening. Further analysis for separation of particle size and lattice strain effects was considered unnecessary in view of the very large mean deviations obtained for strain values and also the earlier results suggesting absence of even detectable strain in metals and alloys quenched from the melt. It is to be stressed in this connection that the particles are actually grains and not cells formed by walls of high dislocation density usually encountered in deformed samples. HOW often has the thoughtful observer pondered the apparent contradictions experienced in the weather? One can take records of two days, one in the winter and one in the summer. The "degree days1' indicate that space heating and domestic load were present in one case and not in the other. The Business Index may be about the same, indicating that the industrial activity of the area and its concomitant use of fuel were about the same. Thus the volume of the products of combustion released to the atmosphere varied only as related to the space heating demand. Yet on one day in winter the atmosphere may be clear and bracing, while on a summer's day the air is thick and murky and the visibility sharply reduced. The situation may be reversed. What are some of the factors that contribute to the creation of these conditions? These few notes have been prepared to indicate some of the influences that are exerted on the problem. The Sources of Atmospheric PolLution The industrial area of Pittsburgh, Pa., has been a dominant center for the production of iron and steel for over one hundred years. In fact, with the growth of the numerous auxiliary processes Allegheny County which contains Pittsburgh is prob- ably the most industrialized county in the world. In addition, the type of manufacture carried out in this area is predominantly dependent on thermal energy (heat). That energy is supplied from coke and coal produced in the vicinity of Pittsburgh Indicative of the stupendous quantities of fuel that are employed in this industrial area's economy, the following (Table I) taken from the U. S. Census (1940) may be of interest.
