This paper reports investigative work conducted to develop a method of estimating the groundwater influx from a homogeneous permeable formation into a vertical mine shaft during sinking. A method of analysis was developed using data obtained from pumping tests and a modification of the Theis non-equilibrium interpretation technique. Excess influx of groundwater into mine shafts has long been one of the more important problems encountered in the development of a mining property. Much work has been done on methods of preventing such influx and on pumping schemes to control inflow if preventive measures fail. The fundamental aspects of the problem, on the other hand, seem to have been neglected. The purpose of this paper is to review the fundamentals of groundwater flow and to propose a rapid method of analyzing hydrologic data in order to estimate influx from a homogeneous permeable formation into a mine shaft. Such an estimate of the quantity of water to be encountered is of value in planning grouting, pumping and other programs designed to control that influx. It is emphasized that the proposed method of analysis should be regarded only as a tool to be used in evaluating the problem before investing the capital necessary to begin development of a property. FUNDAMENTALS OF GROUNDWATER FLOW In order to effectively approach the problem of estimating influx into a mine shaft, a knowledge of the fundamentals of fluid flow through a porous medium is necessary. Darcy, in 1856, developed an empirical relationship to explain the flow of water through sand filters. This relationship V = k (dh/dl), is the basis for all other flow formulae. It has been shown that Darcy's relation is a solution of the Laplace equation and thus is analagous to other natural phenomena such as heat flow. Theis, using the analogy of heat flow by conduction, developed an expression for determining the transient or time-dependent groundwater flow through a homogeneous, isotropic medium. The resulting equation Was also derived by Jacob using hydrologic considerations alone.' The individual terms in the equation are described in Table I. It is important to understand the assumptions upon which this equation is based. 1) The medium through which the fluid flows is infinite in areal extent, homogeneous and isotropic. 2) The well into which the fluid discharges completely penetrates the medium. 3) The characteristics of the medium remain constant at all times. 4) The initial pressure surface is horizontal. 5) The confining media are impervious and horizontal. 6) Fluid is removed from storage instantaneously by a decline in pressure. 7) The diameter of the discharge well is infinitesimal with respect to the drainage radius of the medium.

THERE are two mechanisms by which secondary crystals can develop in bcc alloys, namely 1) impurity inhibition and 2) strip-thickness inhibition. This paper reports some studies of each mechanism; the alloys were Si-Fe, A1-Fe, Cr-Fe, Mo-Fe, and Ge-Fe, as well as iron itself. All the alloys, which were of interest as part of a program of work on soft magnetic materials, were made by a powder-metallurgy process, using carbonyl iron (Grade MCP) as the starting material. Earlier phases of the work have already been published. Work described previously1 shows how the oxygen content of the sintering. atmosphere can be used to produce silica in the material which acts as a grain-growth inhibitor. Since then it has been found more convenient to make use of the oxide in the iron powder to control the silica content of the material. The compacts are sintered in vacuum which allows a direct reaction to take place between the iron oxide and the silicon. Details are given elsewhere.4 By this method, and by suitable adjustment of the rolling schedule, material with cube-on-edge secondary crystals has been produced in thicknesses from 0.1 to 0.001 in. in iron containing from 2-1/2 to 4-1/2 pct Si. It was also found possible to process 6-1/2 pct Si-Fe to 0.001 in. This was achieved by refinement of the sintered-compact grain size by using fine-particle silicon (i.e., <200 mesh). The brittleness of the material necessitated hot rolling to 0.020 in., from which thickness cold rolling was possible. If the conditions of sintering and the cold-rolling schedule were correct (i.e., as given elsewhere4 for 3-1/4 pct Si-Fe) secondary crystals of (110) [001.] orientation could be developed. The first part of this paper describes a new approach to the problem of energy relationships in fracture and comminution. The basic theoretical method used (as contrasted to previous empirical or semi-empirical approaches) is an attempt to verify or disprove the hypothesis of von Rittinger, In the second part of the paper, theoretical conclusions for the three headings of single fracture, plural fracture, and comminution are tested. Agreement between theory and experimental results is demonstrated. The classical hypotheses on the energy relationship in brittle fracture are those of von Rittinger-that the energy required is proportional to the new surface formed— and the alternative one of Kick.&apos; Over the years, repeated attempts have been made to discriminate experimentally between the two assumptions, or to replace both of them, as has been done by Bond? However, no semblance of agreement seems to exist among different investigators. This paper is the first in a series essaying a new approach to the entire problem of energy relationships in fracture and comminution. The purpose of this program of research is to verify (or disprove) the hypothesis of von Rittinger. In contrast to previous empirical or semi-empirical approaches to the problem, the basic method adopted is theoretical. The prime aim is to determine the distribution function for fragment size theoretically and to verify the predicted distribution experimentally. This approach should make possible determination of the total surface of the particles by integration over the corresponding distribution function; one may hope that this direct procedure will yield more definitive results than use of gas adsorption or other methods. The surface area so obtained can then be compared with experimental energies, as obtained by Bergstrom, Sollenberger, and Mitchell,4 for example. It is convenient to distinguish between single fratture, plural fracture, and comminution. Single fracture of a brittle solid is defined as fracture by an external stress system which is removed instantly and permanently when fracture is initiated. Plural fracture consists of single fracture of the original specimen, followed by a sequence of only a few secondary fractures; comminution differs in that the sequence of secondary fractures consists of a large number of repetitive steps. For single fracture, Gilvarrys has given a rigorous derivation of the proper distribution function for fragment size, based on a closely defined physical model and deduced strictly by the laws of probability. Gilvarry and Bergstrome have compared the predictions of the theory with experiment, and have found excellent agreement. The prior work of Gilvarry and of Gilvarry and Bergstrom considers only single and plural fracture. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the discussion to the case of comminution. For prefatory purposes, the theory of Gilvarry for single fracture will be outlined. The considerations will then be applied to the cases of plural fracture and comminution. SINGLE FRACTURE The derivation is based on the Poisson law.7 For Points distributed with mean density y over a domain, this law states that the probability p(t)dt of one point lying in the range t to t + dt with none in the interval 0 to Ms p(t)dt = ye-yt dt. The occurrence of the tellurides of gold and silver, even in small quantities, is so rare that their metallurgical treatment has engaged little attention. A residence of several months at one of the few mines in North America the product of which consists entirely of such ore, has led me to arrange a method for its economical treatment. The mine referred to is the Huronian, situated a few miles distant from Jackfish Lake, in Ontario, Canada. The plan proposed is for this peculiar case, and is put on record as possibly suggestive and helpful .in any similar instance, should it occur. Since freight-rates from the mine to the nearest railroad-point were extremely high, and for other economical reasons, the method proposed is modified by the use, as far as possible, of the machinery already at the mine, and is so arranged that bullion instead of concentrates would be obtained as a final product. The ore-vein at the Huronian mine varied in width from about 4 feet at the surface to 2 feet and less at the lowest level—125 feet —and dipped southeast about 88. The rock consisted, on both foot- and hanging-walls, of soft, green Huronian slates carrying much highly crystalline but barren pyrite. The ore carried an inconsiderable amount of galena with iron and copper pyrites, argentite, hessite, sylvanite (or petzite), and probably altaite, the telluride of lead. Near the surface the ore showed considerable native gold, but this disappeared with greater depth. Two complete analyses of minerals containing tellurium are here attached, as they establish the presence of two important compounds: I. Numerous articles have appeared in the literature citing the application of the potentiometric analyzer to cycling operations. Specific information obtainable by a potentiometric analysis, as noted by various investigators, includes: 1. Pattern sweep efficiency for various injection and production rate programs. 2. Injected fluid breakthrough time at production wells. 3. Optimum production and injection rates. 4. Prediction of injection and/or production well locations. 5. History of advance of the in-jected-produced fluid interface. 6. Ultimate life of the reservoir. 7. Ultimate reservoir production. This note describes a procedure for predicting pressure distribution in a gas-condensate reservoir by using the potentiometric analyzer to obtain potential distribution data on an analog model of the reservoir and then applying Muskat&apos;s&apos; equations. The method relates the volumetric weighted average datum pressure to the mean potential in the model.

WIDESPREAD interest in the better utilization of coal is indicated by the attendance of over seventeen hundred men interested in the pro- cessing and utilization of coal and its by-products, at Pittsburgh, Nov. 15 to 18. The conference was truly international in scope and of a scientific character, and must be considered a real success. There were dele- gates--official and unofficial-from America, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, and Sweden. Several Federal and 28 State departments had representatives, also many colleges and universities, and many leading industrial and mining corporations throughout the country. A feature of the sessions was that papers were mostly read in full and attentively listened to, although in some cases they were of a technical nature. The proceedings were opened by the president of Carnegie Institute of Technology, Thomas C. Baker, who spoke of the importance of the conference and felt that without foreign cooperation it could not have been held. There was no need to apologize for the movement of Carnegie Institute of Technology in the matter. Coal is commanding attention in every part of the world; so is power; and coal will remain the chief source of power for generations to come. The coal chemist is working with the engineer, and nobody can forecast what developments there will be in fuel technology. This conference may be the turning point of fuel technology in America. The development and application of these new processes may be of great benefit to Pittsburgh.

IT appears now that the conflict with the totalitarian states will be a long-drawn-out struggle. The course of this war up to now indicates that this may well be the first major conflict where man power has not been the vital and determining factor. Mechanized warfare has made it possible for relatively small, well-equipped groups to outmaneuver and defeat large armies which lack the necessary modern equipment. Under these circumstances, ultimate victory becomes a matter of resources and productive ability. The important question is not how many soldiers can he put into the field, but the volume and speed in producing the armaments essential to ensure a victory. The resources available to the opposing nations and the efficiency of their systems of enterprise and production will be primary factors in determining the ultimate outcome. Germany had a head start of eight years in the armament race, and it is not easy to overcome such an advantage overnight.

It is commonly believed by metallurgists that in copper-smelting, the copper in the slags, which is irreducible by continued " settling," is retained in the form of " prills " of matte. I have frequently held well-settled slag in a molten condition for a long period without being able thereby to reduce the copper-content. The slag acted as though it contained a minimum of dissolved or combined copper that could not be settled out by gravity. I have used reagents, but without satisfying myself in what form this copper existed. The same slags, by fine grinding and elutriation, could not be separated into portions containing more or less copper than the average content. By treating copper-slags in an electric furnace a button of metallic iron and copper was produced, but the high temperature and the strong reducing-action of the furnace mere influences that suggest an explanation of a result not obtainable with ordinary smelting-temperatures. If all the copper in the slag were in the form of copper-matte, and not existing as a dissolved compound with some of the elements of the slag, then the other metals in the matte, such as gold and silver, should occur in the slag in the same ratio to the copper as to the copper in the accompanying matte. This reasoning led me to study the ratio of metals in the products of smelting, and, apart from the issues discussed in this paper, the research has proved both interesting and illuminative. On the assumption of a similar ratio of metals in matte and slag, if the percentage of copper in the slag accompanying a matte containing 50 oz. of silver and 1 oz. of gold per ton of copper was 0.3 per cent., or 96 oz. per toll of slag, there should be found 0.15 oz. of silver and 0.003 oz. of gold per ton of slag; but, in my experience, there is less silver and much

The study of anisotropy in metals has been greatly stimulated in recent years by the rapid development of X-ray methods for determining the crystallographic relationships of wrought and annealed materials. Prior to this time the knowledge regarding the directional properties of commercial alloys consisted almost exclusively of observations of a practical nature made during the fabrication of metal objects, supplemented by a limited number of mechanical tests on specimens cut at various angles to the direction of working. Such observations clearly indicate that the common methods of cold-working metals cause both a crystallographic and a mechanical fibering varying in character and degree according to the nature and extent of the deforming process. Even after annealing, following certain not too well known combinations of reductions and anneals, a preferred orientation may exist,, thereby constituting a residual fiber effect sufficiently pronounced to manifest directional properties. With the application of the X-ray the experimental horizon was extended chiefly because the study of anisotropic metals promised to offer direct and quantitative evidence regarding the involved mechanism of fragmentation and plastic flow. As a natural consequence the intensive studies in this direction have yielded a vast accumulation of data of ultimate potential value. Unfortunately, however, as is commonly the case in entering a virgin field of experimentation, many of the data cannot be molded into complete and coherent form because of the many unrelated conditions of the experimental projects. Again, the results of the study of single crystals have been rather naturally but at times indiscriminately applied to poly crystalline metals. Furthermore, sweeping statements have been made regarding the behavior during working and annealing of metals and alloys, entirely on the basis of similarity in lattice arrangement. There is abundant reason for believing that relatively small concentration variables, differences in magnitude and distribution of applied stresses, and the character of associated annealing treatments may in some cases greatly influence the mechanics of flow

Since publication of the First Edition of "Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking," in 1944, this book has been a major reference on the subject of steelmaking. The Second Edition of 1951 was so fundamental that it has retained its general usefulness to the present date. However, recently some of the material has been updated in connection with the writing of a companion book, "Electric Furnace Steelmaking." The sponsor of these two books, the Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking Committee, has felt that the new material should be made equally available to purchasers of either book. Accordingly the subject matter of Chapters 14, 15, and 16 of this new edition is duplicated by corresponding chapters in "Electric Furnace Steelmaking." It was also recognized that the use of oxygen in the open hearth and in the new basic oxygen processes represents a major development that should not be omitted from any basic reference. Thus the major new feature of this Third Edition is the supplement on "Oxygen in Steelmaking." The cooperation of the Iron and Steel Division&apos;s Acid Converter and Basic Oxygen Steel Committee (now merged to form the National Open Hearth and Basic Oxygen Steel Committee) is specifically recognized. In addition to the authors of chapters listed elsewhere, it should be noted that Arthur B. Wilder was the Committee Chairman. Although the changes in the Third Edition are important, the Committee cannot overlook the classic character of the Second Edition. This edition was edited by W. O. Philbrook and M. B. Bever in collaboration with H. B. Emerick and B. M. Larsen. It is anticipated that the Third Edition will maintain the value of the book until the current rapid changes in all basic steelmaking processes stabilize themselves sufficiently to justify a complete revision of the entire text in Part I. The experienced service of Wesley Burr in incorporating the new material in the index is also recognized.

In discussing Mr. Keller&apos;s paper, I quoted the results obtained by Mr. Allan Gibb, correctly crediting them to Mr. Gibb, with due reference to the report in which they were published. But in the table immediately following, and in my further remarks, following the table, I find that, by some clerical or other error which I cannot, after the lapse of time, explain, I spoke of Mr. Gibb as Mr. "Dean"—a metallurgist who had written on a related subject, but not on the point I was discussing. In short, my reference throughout was to the work of Mr. Gibb; and by reading a Gibb " for a Dean " in all places on pp. 832 and 835 where the latter name occurs, my remarks will be brought into accordance with my intention, and with the facts.

An educated man is distinguished neither by his clothes nor by his knowledge; he is replarkable not for the things he says, but for the way he says them. You cannot even stand with him under an archway in the rain without finding him out. He may talk only of the weather. His words and his phrases alike may be simple. -at distinguishes him is the arrange- ment of his words; however desultory his talk, it will be method- ical; he has habituated himself to foreseeing the part to be played by each word he uses and the place to be taken by each sentence he utters. On the other hand, the uneducated man, though shrewd and well-informed, will relate facts and events as they recur to him, generally in disorder; in his effort to recollect and in his attempt to rectify forgetfulness he will pause irregularly, filling the intervals with meaningless phrases, such as "and then ", "and: so ", or &apos;said he to me", "said I to him"; and even the contipuous parts of his story will be told confusedly-because he has not learned the proper use of words.* My own experience as an editor of technical manuscripts has taught me that the misuse of &apos;that&apos; and &apos;which&apos; is a fruitful cause of obscurity and confusion. The relative pronouns have distinct functions, and no writer can express himself clearly until he has learned to discriminate between these I functions. For example:

A roasting procedure for synthetic copper sulfide which results in a reproducible transient melting at 450° and 470°C is described in this paper. Possible causes for this melting phenomenon are suggested, and also a procedure to avoid it during the roasting. This melting is believed to be responsible for the occasional occurrence of stickiness in the commercial roasting of copper sulfide concentrate. Many workers have studied the roasting of copper sulfides, but only Lewis et al. have reported that fusion and, in some cases, fusion with "boiling" occurred in the neighborhood of 450°C. The DTA and TGA apparatus, the materials used in this investigation, and the discussion of chemical reactions occurring during the CuS roasting are described in an earlier publication. CuS, in the form of either pellet or powder, was heated at 280° to 330°C in a flowing air or 30% 02: 70% N2 atmosphere. Heating was continued at this temperature until no further weight increase due to sulfates formation was observed on the TGA thermogram. This is believed to be due to the inability of SO, to diffuse out from the sulfate layer on the surface of the pellet, thus halting the sulfate-forming reactions. Hereafter, the sample oxidized in this manner will be referred to as "partially oxidized CuS." X-ray analysis and microscopic examination of a polished cross section of a partially oxidized CuS pellet showed the following order of layers starting from the center of the pellet: Cu2S, Cu2O, CuO • CUSO4, and CuSO4. A bare thermocouple inserted in the center of a partially oxidized CuS pellet (2.5 g) did not indicate any noticeable change in the temperature of the pellet when melted at 450° to 470°C in an inert or oxidizing atmosphere. During the preparation of a partially oxidized pellet, the temperature of a CuS pellet increased by 50°C due to the exothermic formation of sulfates in air at 320°C. The endothermic peak associated with the melting phenomenon at 450°C is shown in [Fig. 1.] A CuS pellet (0.2 g) was oxidized in flowing air (150 cc per min) at 10°C per min up to 320°C and held there for about 2 hr. Then, N2 replaced air and heating was continued up to 500°C. The exothermic peak at 320°C represents an overall formation of sulfates, and an endothermic peak at 450° to 470°C represents the melting phenomenon. To observe the melting visually, a small (50 mg), partially oxidized CuS pellet was heated (in static air) in a hot-stage microscope. The melting phenomenon was observed on an auxiliary TV screen. The paper of Reno H. Sales on Ore Deposits at Butte, Mont.,&apos; is a careful and painstaking work, an important contribution to the literature of the subject. As is almost inevitable in a work of such magnitude, a few misstatements occur; and some of these I shall endeavor to point out. Mr. Sales has also fallen into error, as I think, in the application of his theory of ore deposition; and while the modification which I venture to suggest is a minor one geologically, it is of great economic importance. I refer to Mr. Sales&apos;s idea of an outward migration of mineralizing solutions from a supposed central copper zone. In order that I may make myself plain, I must first epitomize the theory as a whole, which I understand to be this: All of the Butte ore deposits (save those along the Continental fault, not herein considered) are derived from solutions of magmatic origin, which, at the beginning of their ascent from a great depth, were acid in reaction, hot, and were carriers of copper, zinc, manganese and other metals. As they departed from their point of origin they lost heat, and, because of reactions with the wall rock, became more and more alkaline. FIRST of all let me express my affectionate gratitude for the cordiality and good will of your reception. On the part of the men I venture to interpret the character of your greeting, not only as a recognition of the position to which you have been good enough to elect me, but also as an expression of your friendly attitude. However, I cannot pass over the tribute of the ladies so casually: Nor does it seem possible to do justice to my sentiments in addressing them collectively. I would feel more equal to the task if I could have the opportunity to talk to them singly, in doing which I know I may count upon their good sportsmanship not to compare notes. There has been some discussion between Mr. Kelly and myself as to our respective duties on this occasion: The precedents are not clear as to whether the retiring or the incoming president is expected to speak at length. Mr. Kelly&apos;s argument was that as the incoming president confines himself to promises for the future his field is a broad one and his opportunities for extending his remarks correspondingly unlimited.
