Austria produced approximately 800 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each (56,000 bbls.) of crude oil of a 0.9428 sp. gr. during 1935. Of this Gosting II well near Zistersdorf, owned by the Erdolproduktions-Gesellschaft m.b.H., produced 86 per cent of the total, averaging a little over 1.8 cisterns, or about 125 bbl., per day. Gosting IVa of the same company was put in production early in December and produced a total of about 70 cisterns (4900 bbl.). Gosting IV was a failure, but a directional hole drilled from the same derrick produced Gosting IVa. Gosting I, a well owned jointly by the company above mentioned and the Raky-Danubia, was deepened late in the year and made about 2800 bbl. of oil at the rate of 70 bbl. per day. Completions during the year were as follows: In the Gosting pool, Gosting IV and IVa, drilled with rotary tools, the latter producing from Sarmat at a depth of 934 meters (3065 ft.); Kronberg I, of European Gas & Electric Co. with cable tools in Flysch at a depth of 566 m. as a dry hole; in the Oberlaa gas pool, one cable-tool well of the same company at a depth of 266 m. as a dry hole and one Fauck-Haiek system well of the Vacuum Oil Co. at a depth of 483 m. as a dry hole; one rotary hole of the European Gas & Electric Co. at Enzersdorf a/d. Fischa plugged and abandoned in Sarmat after a blow out and gas eruption at a depth of 699.5 meters. The status of drilling wells at close of the year is as follows: In the Gosting pool, Erdol Bohr- und Verwertungs G.m.b.H., north of the producing area, was drilling with rotary at 990 m., Raky-Danubia is rigged up to deepen the old Windisch-Baumgarten hole, Rohoel-Gewin-nungs A.G. (Vacuum-Shell combination) rigging up rotary south of the production, and Steinberg-Naphta G.m.b.H. (Musil) was deepened with light rotary to 830 m.; at Enzersdorf a/d. Fischa, the European Gas & Electric Co. E-2 rotary-drilled hole stood at 1533 m. in Miocene waiting

COMPRESSED air is one of the most useful tools that the mine operator has at his disposal. It is clean, nontoxic, easily handled, and can be distributed anywhere that a man can drag a length of rubber hose. Without it a great deal of drilling would still be a laborious hand process, and although the John Henry of legendary fame could beat a mechanical drill, John Henrys are few and far between, and in the long run the air drill is the victor. As a general rule, horizontal compressors are lubricated by mechanical lubricators, which furnish oil to the cylinder walls, whereas vertical units are splash lubricated. In most horizontal machines oil is introduced at the top center of the piston, from which point it can run down and lubricate the rest of the piston. Some large units introduce oil at more than one point on the cylinder wall, the necessity for this and the number of points of introduction depending upon the size of the cylinder.

ACCELERATED by the demands of war, research and development work in nonferrous physical metallurgy has continued at a rapid pace during the past year. In particular, advances have been made in processing and fabrication, especially of the light alloys, and in the surface treatment of metals. Theoretical physical metallurgy, although less active, has not been neglected and the year has brought forth some -notable contributions to our understanding of the fundamental structure of metals and their behavior in service. Of course, much work that has been done cannot be publicly discussed because of wartime restrictions.

Nickelic hydroxide is an important metallurgical reagent used for precipitating cobalt from nickel sulfate solutions. Existing methods of preparation of nickelic hydroxide involve electrolytic oxidation of Ni(OH)2 or the use of strong oxidizing agents such as chlorine, ozone and persulfate. Although the oxidizing properties of the SO2 + O2 system have been known for some time, e.g., detection of SO2 and oxidation on iron in acidic solution, the application of this system for the preparation of nickelic hydroxide as a process was not considered in the past. The present paper describes a new method for chemical preparation of nickelic hydroxide which has been developed in INCO laboratories. The technique consists of reacting nickelous hydroxide suspensions with a slurry of calcium sulfite in the presence of air or oxygen. The main advantage of the process is the cost of reagents and an absence of soluble by-products (e.g., C1-). The chemistry of this process is unusual since the redox potential obtained during the reaction exceeds that of the oxygen electrode. Therefore, the effect of CaS03 is not just a catalytic acceleration of the reaction NI(OH)~ + 02. The so3= must be involved in the stoichiometry of the overall reaction producing in the initla1 phase some strongly oxidizing intermediate species.

IN SEVERAL papers and addresses during the past two years, I have dwelled upon some of the economic consequences of the war. The fundamental thought that I have sought to convey is that the world became immensely poorer by the war, not only in material wealth and population, but also in the psychology and morale of the people. I do not see how there can be any intelligent dissent from that statement. All the ideas of post-war prosperity were manifestly fallacious, manifestly fallacious from the outset. If there had been any truth in them it would have followed logically that a great war, with all its destruction of wealth, health and life would be a good thing. Therefore, let us have a great war every ten years or so. Such an idea would be both monstrous and absurd. Assuming then the acceptance of my premise, I have tried to show that the losses by the war could be made good in a short time, i.e., in a relatively short time, only by doing things a great deal better than formerly, and that the accomplishment of such a result called for greater transparency in industry, for industrial cooperation, for thinking in terms of industries as a whole, and for the greater exercise of engineering functions. All of this introduced, of course, the position and psychology of labor. I say frankly that I do not look for labor to contribute any constructive thought to the upbuilding. I neither expect it nor hope for it. This is a pity, for it could do so much for its own economic advancement if it would. However, it never has done so, but rather has benefited only from the exercise of the talents of the few, and the main hope now is to bring it into a passive state, dispelling the resistive fallacies that developed during the war. Let us briefly examine the nature of these.

THE hall of the Western Iron and Nail Associations having kindly been placed at the service of the Institute, the opening session was held at 3 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, May 13th, with an attendance of about one hundred and twenty-five members. Mr. William Metcalf, of Pittsburgh, read an address of welcome on behalf of the Local Committee of Arrangements, to which President E. B. Coxe responded. The following papers were then read and discussed : Regenerative Stoves; a Sketch of their History and Notes on their Use, by John M. Hartman, of Philadelphia. Some Curious Phenomena Observed on Making a Test of a Piece of Bessemer Steel, by William Kent, of Pittsburgh. On the Use of Determining Slag Densities in Smelting, by Thomas Macfarlane, of Wyandotte, Michigan. After the reading of these papers each member was presented by the Local Committee with a schedule of excursions, a specially prepared map of Pittsburgh and surroundings, and a directory of industrial works, all tastefully bound, and also with a metal badge bearing the seal of the Institute, to be worn on the excursions. The resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, and absolute thermoelectric properties of some binary terminal solid solutions of silver were determined. Equations are given which permit the calculation of these properties. CONSIDERABLE work has been done on the constitution and electrical conductivity of binary alloys of silver.1-l2 Some of these alloy studies are apparently complicated by doubtful chemical analyses. In some cases the limits of solid solubility are questionable. Those references which present electrical properties of binary silver alloys usually give just one particular set of characteristics such as conductivity (or resistivity). As a means of checking and extending this earlier work, an investigation was undertaken to describe and calculate the resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, and thermoelectric power of binary terminal solid solutions of silver. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS All of the alloys were made with silver containing less than 0.014 pet (by weight) of impurities. These materials were carefully weighed out into 225-g heats and melted in a high-frequency induction furnace. The indium, tin, and antimony systems were melted in Al2O3 crucibles, under a boric anhydride cover, and poured into split graphite finger molds. The aluminum, germanium, arsenic, lead, and bismuth alloys were melted in machined graphite crucibles, and they were also covered with boric anhydride and poured into split graphite finger molds. A complete rational analysis for design of excavation slopes and loaded rock masses is a desirable but perhaps unattainable goal. Irregular external and internal boundary conditions, poor understanding of failure criteria for large masses of rock, capricious material properties, and the importance of indeterminate forces and inaccessible and virtually un- sampleable rock defects emphasize the importance of experience in this aspect of rock engineering. The experience must be correlated with geological factors. In certain regions the accumulation of such experience through the observation of existing rock slopes in various formations constitutes an important aspect of studies for design of rock excavations.

The best procedure consisted of ball-mill grinding and double classification, which gave a properly sized sand containing less iron than the feed.

IN the past year the steel industry underwent an abrupt conversion from a war tempo to a highly competitive peacetime schedule. It is still too early to gain a comprehensive picture as to which of the measures in production metallurgy, that made the war effort so successful, will remain in the postwar production of steel, but many of them undoubtedly will fill an important place after the war. Considerable speculation has developed regarding the disposition of the war-born production facilities of the steel industry. These include new open-hearth and electric furnaces, as well as vast numbers of auxiliary, supplementary, and balancing units that increased and speeded up production beyond the normal capacities of existing melting furnaces and finishing mills. Although these facilities were installed primarily to help meet war requirements, consideration was also given, in planning, to their possible peacetime use. The new equipment is generally modern and efficient, and it seems reasonable to suppose that strategically located units will gradually be absorbed by various steel companies to supplement their own facilities, or to replace in kind, obsolete and inefficient equipment now ready to be scrapped. The rates of oxidation of tungsten have been determined at temperatures between 1320" and 3170°C and oxygen pressures to 1 amn using a surface -recession measurement technique. Above approximately 2000°C and 10-6 atm the rate is independent of temperature and can be calculated from gas collision theory assuming a constant reaction probability, e, of 0.06. Oxygen molecules react at surface sites where oxygen atoms have previously chemisorbed. This provides a direct pressure dependence at low pressures but at high pressures tungsten oxide molecule s form an adjacent gas boundary layer which lowers the PO2 at the tungsten surface. A correction for this effect using free-convection theory fits the rate data over the entire oxygen-pressure range from 10-8 to 1 atrn as well as data using O2-A mixtures. Below 10-6 atrn and above 2000°C, e decreases with increasing temperature because of desorption of oxygen atoms. Below 2000°C the rate decreases with decreasing temperature at all oxygen pressures following an apparent activation energy of 42 kcal per mole and depending on (Po2)n with n varying between 0.55 and 0.80. MOST of the previous tungsten oxidation studies have employed gravimetric methods and have been limited to temperatures below 1000°C where the weight loss associated with evaporation of tungsten oxides is negligible compared with the weight gain from oxidation.' At higher temperatures, oxygen-consumption rates have been determined from pressure measurements, usually at constant flow rates, by Langmuir,2 Eisinger,3 Becker, Becker, and Brandes,4 and Anderson.5 The sensitivity of this method decreases with increasing pressure and, with the exception of Langmuir's work, these investigations were confined to pressures below 10-6 atm. Above approximately 1300°C, depending on the oxygen pressure, the rate of oxide evaporation is greater than the oxide-formation rate and the recession of the tungsten surface can be measured optically without interference from an oxide layer. This was first done by Perkins and crooks6 who heated tungsten rods in air pressures from 1 to 40 torr at temperatures between 1300" and 3000°C. The present investigation of the oxidation kinetics of tungsten at high temperatures emphasizes oxygen pressures from 10-6 to 1 atm. This is the range of interest for earth atmosphere re-entry applications of tungsten for which little data were previously available. APPARATUS The apparatus is a modification of the type used by Perkins and crooks.' Ground tungsten seal rods, 6 in. long by 0.125 in. diam, were mounted vertically between two water-cooled electrodes, one fixed and the other having free vertical travel. The movable counter-weighted electrode is prevented from undergoing horizontal displacement by three sets of runners mounted at 120-deg intervals. Electrical contact is made by means of a water-cooled mercury pool. A 24-in. vacuum bell jar having a volume of approximately 267 liters was used as the reaction chamber with the sample holder mounted in the middle of the chamber. Power was supplied from an 800-amp dc variable power supply. Temperature readings were made by means of a Latronics automatic two-color recording pyrometer. With this instrument, corrections for emissivity are not necessary provided the spectral emissivi-ties at two closely spaced wavelengths are equal. Supporting measurements were made with a micro-optical pyrometer corrected for emissivity of bare tungsten and window absorptivity. The micro-optical pyrometer was calibrated against a National Bureau of Standards calibrated tungsten lamp and both pyrometers were periodically checked against the melting points of tungsten and molybdenum using the oxidation apparatus. Above 10-6 atm, pressures were measured with an Alphatron gage calibrated against a McCleod gage. At 10-6 atm, a hot-filament ionization gage was employed. A magnified image of the self-illuminated tungsten rod was formed using a 360-mm objective lens mounted outside the bell jar. When the experiment exceeded 1 hr, the image was focused on a ground-glass plate about 10 ft from the tungsten rod at about X8 and the recession of the thickness of this image was monitored with a Gaertner cathe-tometer. When faster rates were encountered, a 35-mm time-lapse cinecamera with a telephoto lens and bellows extension was substituted for the ground-glass plate and cathetometer. Diameter recession rates were determined from the photograph image projected on the screen of an analytical film reader. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE After installing the rod in the apparatus and cleaning it with acetone, the system was evacuated to 5 1 x 10-5 torr. Before oxygen was introduced,

THE opening session was held on Tuesday evening, February 17th, in the house of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The President of the Institute, Mr. E. B. Coxe, after a few introductory remarks, congratulating the members on the general prosperity in all the branches of the professions and manufactures represented by the Institute, called on Mr. E. F. Loiseau, of Philadelphia, for the first paper, On the Successful Manufacture of Compressed Fuel at Port Richmond, Philadelphia. Professor Prime called attention to the fact that the work of the United States Testing Board had been left unfinished at a point when valuable results had just been reached, and offered the following resolutions: WHEREAS, The American Institute of Mining Engineers has seen with regret that the work of the United States Testing Board has been suspended through the lack of an appropriation by Congress, which appropriation dues not seem likely to be renewed, and WHEREAS, It seems most important to the vital interests of our iron and steel manufactures that the experiments commenced by the United States Testing Board should be carried to successful completion ; Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed, to act with a like, committee to he appointed by the American Society of Civil Engineers, to carry out to completion the work commenced by the United States Testing Board. Resolved, That the American Society of Civil Engineers be requested to cooperate with this society by the appointment of a like committee. Resolved, That the committee have authority to request, in the name of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, contributions to a fund to be devoted to the completion of the experiments aforesaid. Mechanical properties of the eutectic between CoAl and cobalt were measured over a range of- temnperatures and strain rates for a variety of microstructures produced by directional solidification and by thermo-mechanical processing. Directional solidification led to rodlike, lamellar, and irregular microstructures. The unusually high volume fraction of the cobalt-rich rods and the lurge spacing of the rods were explained by the phase diagram. The hot-worked structure consisted of fibers of COAL in a cobalt-rich matrix. The roonl- tevlperature strength of the uvrought material increased with decreasing grain size but the 1000°C strength decreased with decreasing pain size. At high temperatures the directionally solidified tnaterial was stronger and less strain-rate-sensitice than the hot-rolled material. The fine-grained hot-worked ma-terial became superplastic at high temperatures, with tensile elongations greater than 850 pct, while at root temperature this material was ductile and impact-resistant because of the ductile matrix. Fracture occurred in the directionally solidified material at elevated temperatures by inter phase separation and at roorn temperature by cracks in the intermetallic phase. Growth of these cracks was impeded by the ductile cobalt-rich phase. It was found that the CoAl intermetallic remains ordered at elevated temperatures. DIRECTIONAL solidification of eutectic alloys has been used to produce structures consisting of parallel rods or lamellae. Although the spacing of the phases depends on the growth rate, it has been observed to be of the order of 1 µ in many eutectics. A strong intermetallic phase has been used to reinforce a ductile matrix in the rod eutectic A1-Al3Ni and the lamellar eutectic Al-Al2cu.1 The microstructure of the eutectics A1-A13Ni and A1-A12Cu remained aligned after samples of these alloys were exposed to temperatures just below their melting points for long times. Stability of the microstructure at elevated temperatures makes directionally solidified eutectics a candidate for high-temperature applications. Recently Thompson4 has developed the Ni-NiMo eutectic containing 40 pct NiMo lamellae, giving a tensile strength superior to nickel-base superalloys. Unfortunately, this eutectic oxidizes rapidly at elevated temperatures. By mechanically processing a two-phase structure, one may reach strengths as high as 700,000 psi, as demonstrated by drawn pearlite.5 In this case the strengthening mechanism was thought to be related to the fine substructure formed during deformation.5 However, a heavily worked structure may recrystallize and coarsen at elevated temperatures. Some worked eutectics such as Al-Al2Cu,6 Pb-Sn,7 and Sn-Bi7 have shown unusually large elongations in tension when tested at elevated temperatures. This phenomenon of large extension, called "superplasticity", was related to the fine grain size of wrought two-phase alloys at elevated temperatures. A mode of deformation of "superplastic" material has been shown to be grain boundary sliding,' which has also been observed during creep of polycrystalline materials.9 The Co-A1 system was chosen for this investigation after examining the phase diagrams of binary eutectics." The high melting point of 1400°C, the aluminum content which was expected to give oxidation resistance, and the properties of the intermetallic CoAl were the chief factors influencing this choice. This eutectic consists of a mixture of the intermetallic CoAl and a cobalt-rich solid solution. The intermetallic CoAl has a large range of solubility and a CsCl structure." From the similarity between CoAl and NiAl one would expect CoAl to be ordered at elevated temperatures; however, specific heat measurements" show a transition at 800°C. West-brookL2 has measured the hot hardness of CoAl and found a rapid decrease in hardness above 600°C. The tensile properties and stress rupture properties of as-cast CoAl-Co eutectic were measured by Ashbrook and wallace13 who report a room-temperature tensile elongation of less than 1 pct. I) EXPERIMENTAL A) Sample Preparation. Experimental materials were prepared by directional solidification, by hot working, and by powder processing. The starting materials were electrolytic 99.9 pct pure cobalt and 99.99 pct pure aluminum. 1) Directional Solidification. A vertical Bridgman apparatus heated by induction was used to directionally solidify cylindrical ingots $ in. in diam and 5 in. long. The apparatus was first evacuated and then an argon atmosphere was introduced to retard evaporation. The ingots were contained in an alumina crucible inside a graphite susceptor that rested on a movable water-cooled base. The base was lowered out of the induction coil at a constant rate. Eight of the ingots were solidified using a drive rate of 2.5 cm per hr, two of the ingots at 1.2 cm per hr, and one ingot at 10 cm per hr. The eutectic composition Co 10 wt pct A1 was used in all but one ingot which had the composition of the stoichiometric CoAl intermetallic, Co 32 wt pct Al. 2) Mechanical Processing. At 1000°C the eutectic Co 10 wt pct A1 is a mixture of an intermetallic phase, Co 21 wt pct Al, and a cobalt-rich phase, Co 5 wt pct Al.10 These phases differ from the stoichiometric CO 32 wt pct A1 and pure cobalt because of the large solubility of this eutectic at elevated temperatures." Four rectangular slab ingots, 4 by 1 by 12 in. high, of Co 10 wt pct Al, Co 5 wt pct Al, Co 21 wt pct Al, and Co 32 wt pct A1 were cast for hot rolling. In recent years, several methods have been proposed for correlation of physical properties and behavior of hydrocarbon systems. These correlations were found to be unsatis. factory for predicting differential gas liberation and shrinkage data now obtained experimentally. To achieve the desired accuracy, methods were developed to adjust the correlations with two experimental pieces of data. The required data are the saturation pressure at reservoir temperature and the specific volume or density at these conditions. The saturation pressure is used to adjust the vapor-liquid equilibrium-ratio correlations. The density measurement is used to determine the apparent density of liquid methane. With these adjustments, differential gas liberation and shrinkage are predicted within the experimental error. EQUILIBRIUM RATIOS Equilibrium ratios published by the National Gas Assn. of America' were used as a basis for the calculation. The convergence pressure for the sample was determined by using a hypothetical binary system, with methane as one component and the remainder of the system lumped together to form the other component. For the critical temperature of the heavy constituent, the weight average of the critical temperatures of the ethane and heavier components was used. The correlation of pseudo-critical temperature, density and molecular weight of Matthews, Roland and Katzl was used in this calculation for the hexane and heavier fractions. Points for the critical properties of methane and the hypothetical heavy constituent were placed on a chart of the critical loci of hydrocarbon systems. A critical loci for the hypothetical binary system was drawn, and the critical pressure of this system was determined at the reservoir temperature. This critical pressure became the convergence pressure for which equilibrium ratios were read from the NGAA4 charts. The NGAA equilibrium constants for C, through C, were used for the C,; through C, fractions since they were separated on the bases of normal paraffin boiling points. The correlation of Hoffman, Crump and Hocott5 as used to estimate the equilibrium constant for the C fraction. The NGAA eauilibrium-ratio charts are based primarily on paraffin systems and have to be corrected for the presence of naphthenes and aromatics. The correlations in the literature proved too unsatisfactory for determining these corrections. EXperimental data, the saturation pressure, is used with the correlation of Soloman2 to make this adjustment. The correction factors of Soloman were cross-plotted so that the factors for ethane and heavier components were made a function of the factor for methane. a2 = 0.7927 at + 0.1646 .........(1) where a, = correction coefficient for for methane NGAA equilibrium ratio, and a2t = correction coefficient for ethane and heavier NGAA equilibrium ratios. This equation and the equation for the bubble point are solved simultaneously for the correction coefficients. The bubble-point equation is anKnXn = 1.0 . . . . (2) The equilibrium constant for the saturation pressure at reservoir temperature is used. This procedure not only corrects for the relative volatility between components, but also assures that the results will be directly related to the experimental saturation pressure. METHANE DENSITY After determining a set of equilibrium ratios, the apparent density of condensed methane at 60°F and 14.7 psia was estimated. This was found to be necessary because the correlations of Standing3 ere found to be unsatisfactory. The law of additive volumes was employed to make this calculation.

A method developed by soil scientists for measuring permeability anisotropy of soils has been adapted for use in studies of sandstone permeability aniso-tmpy. Studies on Berea and Bandera sandstone show that permeability of these materials decreases upon application of simulated overburden pressure. Permeability reduction of Berea and Grubb sandstone cores subjected to simulated overburden pressure is shown to be a function of the ratio of radial to axial stress. INTRODUCTION The effects of mechanical stress on reservoir rock parameters are now generally accepted as being important in reservoir engineering calculations. In several oil fields the unique behavior of the reservoir has been attributed to the influence of overburden pressure or internal fluid pressure on rock permeability or fluid content. l Although the gross effects of overburden pressure on permeability, porosity, waterflood efficiency, electrical resistance and sonic velocity have now been established,3-9 there are some very interesting, and perhaps important, details of rock behavior under stress that have not heretofore been studied. In this paper we will show that permeability anistropy of several sandstones is a function of overburden pressure. We will also show that permeability reduction of cylindrical samples of two sandstones, when subjected to mechanical stress, is a function of the ratio of radial to axial stress. Most studies of overburden pressure effects made in the past have attempted to duplicate reservoir conditions by applying hydrostatic external pressure on all surfaces of the sample. Assuming perfect elasticity, that is, no viscoelastic flow during geological time, reservoir rock in situ cannot be under hydrostatic stress as is apparent from the value of 0.25 for Poisson's ratio for most rock. In the absence of tectonic forces the horizontal stress component If there are directional permeability effects, as has been reported from field and laboratory studies, l0,11 then one would expect hydrostatic stress as used in the laboratory to give a different permeability reduction from that occurring under reservoir stress conditions. The influence of stress on directional permeability was measured by a modification of the method first described by Maasland and Kirkham for use on soil samples.12 Their method permits calculation of the permeabilities along each of the three mutually perpendicular axes of a cubic sample. The modification reported in this paper extends the method to observing these permeabilities when the sample is under hydrostatic stress. The Hassler sleeve type of core holder is satisfactory for studying overburden pressure effects on permeability if a known force is applied to the end plugs. Wyble6 used a sleeve core holder but did not load the end plugs. In this paper we combine sleeve pressure and axial force to give permeability changes which we believe are close to those occurring in reservoirs when reservoir pressure changes. The combination of sleeve pressure and axial force assumes, however, that the sleeve pressure simulates both vertical stress and horizontal stress in one direction. METHOD PERMEABILITY ANISOTROPY The Maasland and Kirkhaml2 method of measuring permeability anisotropy uses a cube of porous material which is Open On three faces and has discs with a Center hole for an air inlet cemented to the other three mutually perpendicular faces (Fig. 1). OUR combined economic activities have as their goal the maximum of individual well-being and national security. In this age of intense international competition the two objectives are closely related. For many decades, the maximum of well-being and ability to maintain national security have moved generally upward. The best single measure-perhaps the only adequate measure -of the level of the rising goal is the per capita real national income (national income corrected for price changes). For centuries before the industrial revolution the income of the world's population changed little from generation to generation. In our country prior to 1800 the growth of national income was hardly measurable from decade to decade. Since 1850, perhaps since the "industrial revolution," the growth of per capita real income has been increasing geometrically. Of major importance is the accelerative growth of the productive ability of our economy. Inadequate consideration of its implications is partly responsible for periodic delays in solving our princi-

The MacIntyre Development of the National Lead Co. is located at Tahawus, N. Y. The operations involve the mining and concentrating of a titaniferous iron ore to produce an ilmenite concentrate and a magnetite concentrate. Construction of the MacIntyre plant was commenced during the summer of 1941, when world conditions threatened to cut off the supply of Indian ilmenite. An open pit mining operation was developed and the crushing and milling equipment put in operation in July 1942. A general description of the operation was given in the Adirondack Issue of Mining and Metallurgy for November 1943. The metallurgy of the mill operation was described by Mr. Frank R. Milliken,* Plant Manager, National Lead Company, MacIntyre Development, and presented at the AIME New York Meeting, February 1948.

(written discussion*)..-The mode of intercrystalline oxidation which the authors" have so well observed and described is characteristic of nickel that has been exposed' to: the action of an oxidizing atmosphere at higher temperatures, such as, those at which; it is annealed or heated for rolling or forging. Oxidation under such conditions proceeds inward from the surface along the, crystal boundaries' producing a net-work, probably of oxide; which causes a very brittle condition of this surface material. This, in turn, generally results in surface cracking and checking during further, rolling and a defective sheet or other product is produced. An example of this is shown in Fig. 2, which shows the surface, of a badly surface-cracked sheet of nickel produced by incorrect heating con-ditions. A cross-section of this sheet etched with nitric acid is shown in Fig. 1, which reveals the intercrystalline oxidation network adjacent to both surfaces.These layers are so brittle that it is not possible to deform them by rolling without severe cracking along these lines or, planes of weakness. The best, and possibly only, remedy for this condition lies in its prevention by the maintenance of a neutral soft flame for heating and annealing nickel during the entire course of its manufacture. I should like to suggest that, those making microscopic investigations of nickel and nickel-rich alloys try the use of acetic-acid .solutions of nitric acid for etching these metals rather than aqueous solutions, of nitric acid. I have found that a solution containing 50 per cent. nitric acid, from 25-45 -per. cent. acetic acid, and from 25-5 per cent. water gives excellent results with. Wrought and cast nickel and Morsel metal and superior results to those obtained with nitric acid, alone. The acetic. acid seems to inhibit the passivity that nickel often assumes toward nitric acid and much more uniform etching may, be obtained. The proportions of nitric and acetic, acid may be varied somewhat from those given without mate-rially altering the quality of the etching, although without any distinct improvement in it.
