Changes in existing airway and fan-installation conditions offer the most common opportunities for effecting economical operation of mine-ventilating systems, but the largest possibilities for securing this result lie in the original design of the main airways for efficient service. Formulas, and charts for their graphical solution, are presented herewith for the determination of the elements of airways design when the conditions of service are known or may be roughly approximated. Although the analyses are made with particular reference to metal-mine airways, there is no essential difference between main airways in metal and coal mines, and the methods presented are applicable to both. Little attention is paid to designing airways for maximum economy in the ventilation of metal mines. Most of the openings used as main airways are originally designed and used for transportation and other operating purposes. Even where openings are made primarily for ventilation, the possibility of their future use for other operating purposes, or even custom alone, usually results in the selection of a size and shape similar to those of existing openings. Natural conditions, such as heavy ground, often seriously limit the size of opening that can be maintained without excessive expense; and various operating factors, such as velocity limitations on traveling roads, often dictate size requirements in excess of those required for economy in ventilation only. In metal mines the main airways are, as a rule, too small rather than too large for economic service, with the general result that the quantities in circulation are often less than the mine's proper requirements over long periods, even though excessive amounts of power are applied in an effort to remedy conditions. Increasing the area of an airway increases the cost for excavation and lining practically proportionately but at the same time affects a very rapid decrease in power requirements. The balancing of these two factors of the expense to give a minimum total yearly operating cost for ventilation is mainly a matter of proper original design of the main airways of the mine, since the large volumes handled through these parts of the system involve large power costs and thus present opportunities for effecting large savings through proper design. The present paper is a progress report on an investigation of the physical factors of oil and gas and especially of their sands,' such as pore space, size of pores or permeability, retentivity, viscosity of the oil, temperature, pressure, thickness and area of the pay sand, water relations, and capillarity. The purpose is to determine as many of these physical factors as possible, and to ascertain the relations existing, directly or indirectly, between these physical factors and the production of oil and gas. As yet only pore space2 and size of grains of pay sands have been investigated, although an apparatus has been designed to determine the permeability of a sand to oil, water, or gas under definite drops of pressure between the entrance face and exit face of the sample. Messrs. E. W. Shaw, R. Van A. Mills, D. Dale Condit, G. B. Richardson, G. C. Matson, and C. H. Wegemann collected the samples upon which the physical determinations were made. Acknowledgment is made to my colleagues of the United States Geological Survey for many suggestions and criticisms; to Mr. Mills for the production data given of the oil wells from which some of the samples were collected; to Mr. A. IN the spring of 1905 I was employed by Messrs. Bradley and Requa, under our fellow member, Thomas Cox, on the mill plans for the Nevada Consolidated, when an opportunity came to go to the Philippines to erect a small mill on the property of the Benguet Consolidated. This I accepted, expecting to be away eight months or so, but it was seven years before I got back. .I sailed in May, on the Coptic, having as room-mate as far as Kobe, A. E. Drucker, who was going out to Korea for the Oriental Consolidated. It was the first trans-ocean trip for either of us, and we had some rather unusual experiences. This was toward the close of the Russo-Japanese war and the Russian fleet was known to be on the way from Suez to Asiatic waters, but it was a matter of doubt whether they would risk a passage between Japan and the mainland, or take the longer but obviously safer route outside of Japan. The Coptic carried much contraband of war for Japan, so naturally did not care to meet this fleet. No definite word being available at Honolulu, we went to the Midway Islands, but the cable station there had very little information to offer, so we proceeded cautiously toward Japan. On the last afternoon out, we steamed due north at half speed for several hours, and finally sneaked into Yokohama at night, to learn that ' the Russian fleet had met the Japanese the day before and had been annihilated. We sailed over the spot in the Sea of Japan a week later, and when we got to Manila we found three of the Russian boats interned and being guarded by the monitor Monadnock and a cruiser. This was only a matter of form, as the Russians were only too glad to be there for the rest of the war, and the boats could not have gone far anyway, for they were literally shot to pieces. The Admiral's flagship had a hole within 3 ft. of the water line, for ward, through which a man could enter by stooping.

Drilling activity in Nebraska during 1945 continued to decline slightly over that of the previous year. Eight tests for oil and gas were completed during the year, of which seven were wildcats and resulted in dry holes. The eighth test, an inside location in the Dawson field of Richardson County, yielded an initial production of about 3o bbl. per day with 86 per cent water from the Hunton formation. Five wells were drilling at the end of the year, two of which were wildcats. Two of the drilling wells were deepening operations in the Dawson and Falls City fields and the third was an inside location in the Falls City field, which appears likely to result in a producer. Most of the operations were in Richardson County but two wells were drilled in Dawes and Gage Counties and one each was drilling in Holt and Washington Counties at the end of the year. There were no new discoveries of oil or gas.

Before entering upon a general discussion of the fascinating, but at present rather controversial, subject of gases in copper, the author feels that some attention should be directed to the work which has been carried out on the solubility of gases in metals. The outstanding contributions to our knowledge of this subject have been made by Sieverts and his collaborators(1) † and by Iwasé.(2) Both the German and the Japanese investigators employed apparatus of the same general design in their investigations. Full reference need only be made, therefore, to the German scheme, which is diagrammati-cally illustrated in Fig. 1. This, to use the words of Sieverts, which he employed in describing his arrangement of apparatus at the 1928 meeting of der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Metallkunde(10): shows a diagram of the usual mode of procedure. A quartz flask contains the metal (for high temperatures a highly refractory porcelain tube is used) and is connected with the rest of the apparatus by means of a stopcock. The other parts consist of a burette divided into 1/10 c.c., a leveling tube, and an adjustable mercury reservoir. The burette is connected on one side with the gas inlet and on the other side with the absorption flask; the connection can be interrupted by means of suitable taps. Another tap permits the connection of the flask and the Töpler pump. In an experiment the quartz flask is first exhausted and then a measured quantity of gas is let in from the burette. In the first place the volume of the flask when empty is found by calibration with an inert gas. The pressure is read off on the level tube of the burette, and the temperature measured by means of a thermocouple whose welded junction lies close to the outside of the quartz flask, which is heated in an electric furnace. In several experiments the quantity of absorbed gas was transferred to a burette by means of a pump and measured. Care was taken by Sieverts to cool the ground-in joint between the reaction flask (or tube) and the rest of the system. Suitable precautions

A constitutional diagram has been proposed for the tantalum-rhenium alloy system. Rhenium dissolved in tantalum up to 48 wt pct, and the maximum solubility of tantalum in rhenium is 5 wt pct. Intermediate x and s phases were found. X-ray diffraction, metallography and melting points were employed. SEVERAL investigators have described the phases present in the tantalum-rhenium alloy system, but no detailed account of the phase diagram prior to the present investigation appears to be available. Greenfield and Beck' reported the solubility of 48 to 54 at. pct Re in tantalum, a s phase at 41 at. pct Ta, and x phase isomorphous with a Mn from 37 at. pct Ta to less than 25 at. pct. They employed as-arc melted specimens and heat treatments at 1200 °C lasting 72 hr.2 Duwez3 reported the existence of a a phase at the composition Re3Ta2. Niemiec and Trzebiatowski4 observed a lattice parameter a = 9.69A, for the x phase at a composition Ta7Re22, but no s phase. Savitiski and Tylkina5 have shown a hardness maximum at the composition 40 at, pct Ta and a somewhat lower plateau from 35 to 10 at. pct. Knapton6 indicated results similar to those of Greenfield and Beck.' The present investigation describes the phase relationships in the tantalum-rhenium alloy system determined by melting point measurements, X-ray diffraction and fluorescence, and metallography. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Commercial 99.7 pct Ta powder from Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. and 99.9 pct Re powder from Chase Brass and Copper Co. were used for alloy preparation. The powders were weighed to desired nominal compositions and then pressed without binder into compacts weighing 5 or 10 g. The compacts were arc-melted six times on alternate sides on a water-cooled copper hearth using a nonconsumable tungsten electrode in an atmosphere of titanium gettered helium, at a pressure of 500 mm Hg. In most cases this procedure yielded alloy buttons of satisfactory homogeneity. A series of alloy specimens were analyzed wet chemically for use as standards for X-ray fluorescence. All specimens were analyzed by fluorescence and the results showed that the compositions differed by less than 3 pct Re from the original as-weighed nominal composition.* On the basis of self-

IN the early fall of 1925, the writer was conducting, in the Ledoux and Co. labora-tory, New York, experiments directed to-ward ascertaining the effect on its impurity content when cathode copper was subjected to a current of various gases at an elevated temperature below the melting point, The apparatus consisted of a vertical 1-in. dia. silica tube about 12 in. long, heated on the outside, The cathodes were broken to pass a8-in. mesh, and a current of various differ-ent gases was passed up through a 4-in, long column of these loose cathode particles in the vertical tube furnace. Temperature was maintained to i500° to 1600°F. and the gas treatments lasted from 3 to 6 hr, The writer observed that whenever reducing gas (H2 or CO) was used, these cathode par-ticles stuck together at points of contact with each other. The cohesion was so marked and tenacious that an examination was made of the fractured surfaces, when cathode particles were broken from the cluster. Crystal growth was always found to have taken place across the surfaces where separate particles were in contact, but only after all oxides, sulphates, etc, had been completely removed. The idea of a possible new process was then conceived and was disclosed to A. M. Smoot (V. P. Ledoux and Co.) with intent to obtain his views. The first conception as given Smoot was "to gas-clean broken cathodes, put them in an extrusion press, solidify and extrude them at around 1500°F," Smoot's reaction, after a few moments considera-tion, was, "It looks perfectly all right to me."

Although there is now an extensive literature on the bleaching clays, not a great deal of material is to be found concerning the geological features of these deposits and their bearing on problems of exploration and development. At the same time, chemical and crystallographic research on the clay minerals during the past few years has laid a suitable foundation upon which to base conclusions of economic value drawn from field observations. All of the criteria and deductions herein presented are based upon extensive field work by the senior author, both in the United States and Canada, and when .subjected to the ultimate tests of development and exploitation they have held up remarkably well, despite the fact that many of these conclusions apparently have not been reviewed in the literature heretofore. The nomencelature of the bleaching clays is rather confusing in the light of present-day commercial standards and has even led to litigation.'" The old term "fuller's earth" is largely based upon trade usage and the definition of the term therefor? is dependent upon the changing standards of commerce. For statistical purposes the Bureau of Mines8' classes as "fuller's earth" all natural bleaching or filtering claylike materials that possess high adsorptive capacity without previous chemical treatment or activation. Conversely, the so-called activated or acid activated clays are now generally recognized as any clay mineral or mixture of the clay minerals whose adsorptive capacity has been developed to commercial standards by chemical or physical treatment. Therefore, without attempting to propose any additions to the nomenclaturc: of bleaching clays, this paper will refer to naturally adsorptive clays and activable clays, respecbively, for the two types indicated.

THE relation of labor to the accident rate in mines is admirably epitomized by Thomas T. Read in his paper presented at the St. Louis meeting, in the sentence "Reliance for accident prevention must be upon the individual worker himself." In connection with the inspection of mines for the fixing of merit premium rates for insurance under workmen's compensation, it has been the practice of The Associated Companies to allow 60 per cent.of the credits for safeguarding of the physical hazards of the mine and 40 per cent. for the human element. By "human element" is meant. that inherent tendency of the industrial worker to be careless, negligent or disobedient, in respect to his own safety, and after that also f his fellow workman. This is a tendency not only of the laborer or of the skilled miner, but of all human beings, working or traveling, anywhere. This element of mine safety, sometimes called the moral hazard, has been admirably shown by statistics compiled from the records of the Department of Mines of the Union of South Africa to be clue in about equal measure to the carelessness of the miner and to that of the operator. These statistics show that about one-half the fatalities in mines are clue to the so-called hazard of the industry, or what is sometimes called the dangers inherent to work or misadventure. Of 2497 fatalities investigated, including over 200,000 employees, for a period of over 2 ½ years, it was found that 17.5 per cent. were due to faulty plant or material, fault of the foreman, or of the management-in short were-clue to the operator; 17.1 per cent. to disobedience of orders, carelessness or ignorance of injured persons; and 5.9 per cent. through fault of others, including fellow workmen. The fault of the operator is evidenced by failure to give proper warning, failure to inspect, failure to furnish proper equipment, and neglecting to comply with the recommendations of the inspector. THE Missouri fire clays are here divided into plastic and semiplastic clays occurring as widespread bedded deposits in east central Missouri and flint and diaspore clays occurring as isolated "sink-hole" deposits in the north central Ozark region. Visual inspection was the first method used in clay prospecting. Thin overburden, hard sandstone "rimrocks," and the occurrence of diaspore float made this method particularly applicable in the flint and diaspore fields. The first drilling tool used was a hand auger. One man can drill 25 to 50 ft. per day at a cost of about 35 cents per foot. Holes can be drilled to a depth of 150 feet. Spud drills are often used where the over burden is hard. This drill uses a slotted earth socket bit. A two-man crew can drill about 100 ft. per day at a cost of about 35 cents per foot. Mechanically powered auger drills have been used extensively in wildcat drilling in the past few years. This type of drill furnishes a continuous set of cuttings. The practical depth limit with this drill is 50 to 60 ft. Two men can drill 300 ft. per day at a cost of about 20 cents per foot. Core drilling is used mainly to prove a known clay deposit. A two-man crew with a No. 22 Sullivan drill can drill about 30 to 40 ft. per day in soft clay, at a cost of about $1.25 per foot.

Discussion of the paper of R. J. COLONY, presented at the New York Meeting, February, 1921, and issued With MINING AND METALLURGY No. 169, January, 1921. R. J. COLONY (author's reply to discussion).-The work of Sosman and Merwin on the system lime-ferric oxide, mentioned by Mr. Rankin, was not overlooked. When studying portland cements and portland-cement clinkers petrographically, however, the lime-iron compound was difficult to correlate with the very definite dicalcium ferrite described by those investigators, which possesses such well-defined optical properties. In portland cements, the calcium ferrite (or ferrate?) is an indefinite, fuzzy, and generally amorphous, or apparently amorphous substance that is distributed interstitially with respect to the other grains, from which it was very difficult to derive any satisfactory results. For this reason, the writer, tentatively, chose to regard it as related to the aluminate, and assigned to it the composition 3CaO.Fe203, which may be incorrect, however, as Mr. Rankin suggests.

THE -problem of extracting alumina from clay and low-grade bauxites has been the subject of considerable interest for some time. The basic reason, of course, lies in the fact that known reserves of high-grade bauxite are not inexhaustible and that the present commercial process cannot successfully cope with low-grade bauxites or clay. Ultimately it may be necessary to use these poorer raw materials for all commercial operations, An unprecedented demand for aluminum during the war emergency and the constantly threatened shortage of imported bauxite caused the United States Government to take an active role in this problem. Through the National Academy of Sciences, the War Production Board and the Defense Plant Corporation, it investigated processes and finally selected four to be used in the construction and operation of four experimental plants. Each plant was to be designed in such a way as to facilitate its incorporation into a larger commercial plant should the need arise. The Chemical Construction Corporation process, or "Chemico" ammonium sulphate process as it is better known, was one of the four selected. The extensive literature and patents on record before the war generally follow one of two process-types depending upon the extracting reagent used. One group uses an acid reagent, the other an alkali. The Chemico process uses an acid reagent. For those interested in other processes described in literature, there is a short bibliography at the end of this paper, The basic steps of all acid extraction processes are: (I) to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble, (2) to separate the released alumina from impurities and insoluble gangue, and (3) to recover the reaent for re-use. THE PROCESS AS PLANNED In April 1941, a group of chemists and engineers of the Chemical Construction Corp, became interested in the problem of extracting alumina from clays and low-grade bauxites and, under the leadership of Mr. Blakeslee Barnes, Vice President and General Manager of the Company, first drafted a process in July of that year-five months prior to Pearl Harbor. The work continued in our research laboratories and with a small pilot plant, By June 1943, the work had progressed to a point where it was possible to apply for a patent on the process which was U.S. patent 2,405,426, granted August 6, 1946. Immediately prior to the development of the Salem plant, the process was envisaged to be as follows: I. The first step was to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble. It was planned: (a) Clay or low-grade bauxite would be roasted at 700 to 800°C (1292° to 1492°F). (b) The roasted ore would then be leached .with hot aqueous ammonium bisulphate to form a slurry. The writer has been interested in determining the mineralogic dis-t,ribut.ion of silver in the base-metal ore of thc Ground Hog mine of the Asarco Mining Co. in the Central mining district of New Mexico.' This ore consists of a varitextured mixture of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena and pyrite in a quartz gangue. The average ore contains 14 per cent of zinc, 9.5 per cent of lead, 5 per cent of copper, and 10 oz. of silver per ton. Generally it is accepted that the silver in ores of this type, in which no definite silver minerals can be recognized, is contained in the base-metal minerals. Published assays of pure mineral specimens from many districts show that each of the base-metal minerals contributes in some degree to the total silver content of the ores, and to determine the proportionate amount contributed by each mineral in any specific ore it has been the practice to assay selected specimens of each mineral, the purity of which has been determined microscopically. There being no such assays available for the Ground Hog ore, and it being impracticable to have enough of them made to give average results, the writer resorted to a mathematical attack upon composite assays of large quantities of ore and concentrates. Surprising results were obtained, and it is the threefold purpose of this paper to present these results, to describe the mathematical method used, and to point out the value of using this method even when assays of pure specimens are available. Value of the Mathematical Method The obvious way of attacking the problem would be to separate cleanly large quantities of ore into its component minerals and then to determine the average silver content of each mineral by assay of representative samples. Since an absolutely clean separation is not feasible, it has been the practice, as mentioned above, to assay pure specimens of the different minerals. No one will contend seriously that the silver content of a base-metal mineral is constant throughout any particular deposit, and it will

This paper was prepared at the request of Capt. A. F. Lucas, Chairman of the Institute's Committee on Petroleum and Gas, as a preliminary discussion of the fuel oils which are used-in the Southwest, giving their composition, uses, prices, etc. Should it afterward be found desirable, these observations may be extended over a larger area. In this connection, J suggest that samples of all kinds of fuel oils, including various tars, from all over the country, be collected and sent to some testing laboratory for examination. We would be glad to extend the facilities of the laboratory of the Bureau of Economic Geology and Technology, at the University of Texas, for this purpose, and to do the work free of all expenses. After such examinations are made and the results classified and studied, it would be possible to suggest specifications under which fuel oils should be purchased, and to arrive at some conclusions respecting the uniformity of such specifications, with due allowance for climatic and other more or less local conditions. While such specifications do not now depart from a common standard anything like as much as specifications for illuminating oils do, yet there are discrepancies which should not exist. Some of these discrepancies are of lessening importance, due to the pronounced tendency to distill every crude oil that can be distilled with profit, and to send residues into the market for fuel oil. Residues from the refineries are of a more uniform chemical composition and physical nature than many of the crude oils that go direct into the fuel market. The lower flash-point oils are disappearing from the fuel trade and in place of them we are getting oils that do not flash below 220° F., nor burn under 320° F. In the Southwest, it has not been long since we had fuel oils that flashed at as low as 110° F., and the average flash point over a considerable period was 151° F. Now we are using oil that flashes at about 30° lower than the former burning point, which was 256° F. In other words, the flash point has risen, on the average, 100°; and the burning point about 75°.

In the equilibrium phase diagram of the Ni-Mo sys-tem1,2 available at present, intermetallic compounds (or ordered phases)ß(Ni4Mo) and ?(Ni3Mo) are known to exist to the nickel rich side. In our recent investigations on Ni-Mo alloys, however, it has been found that the quenched alloys from the high temperature region containing more molybdenum than the Ni4Mo do not decompose directly into 0 and when annealed isothermally below the peritectoid temperature, i.e., 865°C. This note is to report the existence of Pt2Mo type superlattice (possibly ordered Ni2Mo) as a metastable phase in the early stage of decomposition. Alloys containing 20.1, 22.7, and 24.4 at. pct Mo were prepared by vacuum-melting electrolytic nickel of 99.9 pct purity and molybdenum powder of 99.9 pct purity in an alumina crucible. From the resulting ingots, sheets 0.3 mm thick were obtained by forging, hot-, and cold-rolling. The sheet specimens were water-quenched from ! region and subsequently annealed for various periods of time at temperatures below the peritectoid temperature. On these specimens were made optical-microscopic and transmis-sion-electron-microscopic observations.
