THE town of Jerome is located in Yavapai County in north central Arizona. It has a population of over 6000 people and the two important mines of the district, the United Verde and the United Verde Extension, lie almost within its limits. Perched high on the southwest side of the Verde Valley, at elevations of 4800 and 5500 ft.. (1463 and 1676 m.), both mines have long tunnels from their lower levels through which ore is hauled to their respective smelters. The two smelter towns of Clarkdale and Verde, out in. the center of the valley and about 2000 ft. (609 m.) below, form part of the wide panorama that meets the eye at Jerome. This panorama and the topographic and surface features and the geologic formations are shown in a separate pamphlet. In the vicinity of Jerome, the great southern escarpment of the Arizona plateau forms the northeast side of the Verde valley. The general level of this escarpment, or "the rim" as it is called, is about 4000 ft. above the Verde River. A corresponding elevation is reached only by the, highest parts of the Black Hills, which bound the valley to the southwest. The two lava-capped mesas, known as Mingus and Woodschute Mountains, form the culmination of the Black Hills. That part of the old Black Hills mining district which lies between their crests -and the Verde River is now known as the Jerome or Verde copper district. However, if the smelters are not included, a strip about 7 mi. long and 3 mi. wide (11 by 5 km.) embraces practically all the properties belonging to the Jerome district. This strip lies parallel to and along the side of the Verde valley from about First View, 2 mi. northwest of Jerome, to the neighborhood of Allen Spring, near the south end of Mingus. Mountain. The rank of the district in copper production, as well as features of peculiar geologic interest in connection with the ore occurrences, entitle the district to much more consideration than it has received in the literature of copper mining. Arizona stands preeminent as a copper-producing state. In 1918, it produced four-tenths of the total amount produced in the United States, and nearly equaled the, combined production of its three chief competitors, Montana, Michigan, and Utah. "HEREDITY"' in cast iron has been a subject of much discussion. Numerous experimenters have found that the properties of gray iron may vary greatly without corresponding variations in composition or thermal treatment. The main structural difference in such cases is in the size and distribution of the graphite flakes and the explanations given usually attribute this difference to some chemical element not shown by ordinary analysis or to some physical factor, such as inclusions in the melt. It cannot be said that any of these theories is completely satisfactory. Much remains to be learned about cast iron and for this reason a study of the material was undertaken as a part of the program of fundamental research at Battelle Memorial Institute. A review of the literature indicated that very little systematic work had been done on the mecha-nism of freezing in cast iron. The experiments described below are largely concerned with that problem.

Regarding liquid nzetals structurally as a suspm-sion of clusters , having derivated solid-state coordination, in truly liquid atoms, the recently developed Kuvlar-Samarin technique of centrifuging- in liquid state enabled the determination of the cluster sizes inAl-Cu mid Pb-Sn systems. It is shown that the colutne fraction of the clusters does not exceed 9 pct and the energy of their formation in Al-Cu is about 5.5 kcal per g-atom and in Pb-Sn eutectic alloys about 25 kcal per y-atoni. STRUCTURAL investigations of liquid state have principally followed the following three courses: i) studies with X-ray, electron, or neutron diffraction; these investigations have shown that there is a certain amount of regularity in the structure of liquid metals which can be defined by a coordination number and that the structure is a derived function of that in the solid state; ii) thermodynamical investigations which are based on the concept of ideal behavior; these describe the liquid state in terms of free-energy values and other thermodynamic functions; although these investigations are of help in the study of the general effects of alloying, they do not provide any structural insight into the precise atomic distribution in liquid state; iii) measurements of surface tension and viscosity; although it is natural to expect that the viscosity is related to the structure in liquid state, these investigations have so far only provided information which can be used by the foundry technologists and has been little utilized in formulating models of the structure of liquid state. As it happens, investigators in the three groups have worked almost independently of each other and there is practically no structural correlation between the results of one group with those of another. The purpose of the present paper is to indicate that the experimentally measured parameters of these three groups of research are closely related to the structure in the liquid state. STRUCTURE OF LIQUID METALS Although atomic distribution in solid and gaseous states is rigorously known, that of the liquid state is only appreciated on the fringes. There is no universal model of atomic distribution in liquid state, but two diverse models are at present hotly contested. The first, largely expounded by ~ildebrand,' regards the liquids as condensed gas since many of their properties and much of their behavior can be adequately described by regarding them as fluids. The second mode12j3 considers that some form of near-solid as- sociation of large number of atoms exists in the liquid state. On the other hand, ~ernal' was able to predict rather precisely the radial distribution functions in liquids on the basis of statistical geometric approach which considered that liquids are "homogeneous, coherent, and essentially irregular assemblage of molecules containing no crystalline regions or holes large enough to admit another molecule". He introduced the concept of pseudonuclei in the otherwise random structure as aggregates of closely packed tetrahedra which gradually merge into irregularity and continually replace each other. To what extent the pseudonuclei can be regarded as regions of near-solid association is indefinite but Bernal suggested that the concept of pseudonuclei can be compromised with the latter model if the near-solid associations are regarded as extremely dense and not necessarily crystalline. The difficulty in projecting the structure of liquid metals arises because they exhibit duplicity of character as some of their properties are closer to those of crystalline solids and others to fluids. There is an increasing tendency to discuss the structure of liquid metals in terms of the second concept according to which the structure of liquid metals may be conceived as consisting of i) clusters of atoms where the aggregation is a close derivative of that in the crystalline state, ii) individual atoms which behave like true liquids in respect to degrees of freedom and iii) excess number of vacancies. It is noteworthy that the introduction of only 5 pct vacancies is sufficient to transform crystalline matter into the liquid state. At any instant of time thermodynamic equilibrium exists between i, ii, and iii, but the relative proportion of the clusters and random atoms is not known. That this is so can be appreciated by the fact that, when liquid metal is rapidly cooled, liquid state vacancies may condense in the form of dislocation loops and vacancies in excess of their equilibrium number in solid state. These dislocation loops have been observed in thin foils of aluminum prepared from rapid cooled aluminum. As temperature increases above melting point the number and volume fraction of clusters decrease but those of vacancies and random atoms increase. Clusters are transient in nature. In pure metals the cluster is an aggregation of the metal itself. In alloys, however, the nature of the cluster largely depends on the interaction between solvent and solute atoms. If the interaction between unlike atoms is greater than between like atoms: the clusters are then aggregates of unlike atoms. Examples of this kind of system are A1-Cu, Mg-Pb, and so forth, i.e., systems which exhibit negative departures from the Raoult's law. It was deemed desirable to obtain an understanding of the vacuum desulfurization process. McKechnie1 has reported that the sulfur content of nickel- and cobalt-base alloys is reduced in vacuo. Keverian and Taylor2 have observed that vacuum melting causes desulfurization of iron-carbon-silicon alloys. Garnyk and samarin3 have desulfurized transformer steel by vacuum treatment. Experiments were conducted in order to investigate the desulfurization of liquid iron under reduced pressures, and to establish the effect of some alloying elements, and various crucible materials. A vacuum-induction furnace of 50-lb capacity was used. The charge was Armco iron. Silicon was added as 90 pct ferrosilicon, carbon as electrode graphite, and aluminum as high-purity aluminum metal. Magnesia and silica crucibles were used, their inside diameters were 5 1/2 and 5 3/8 in., respectively. The temperature was measured with an optical pyrometer and it was held at 1600 1 15°C. Samples were withdrawn with quartz tubes of 6 mm ID, without disturbing the furnace atmosphere. Pressures were measured with an alphatron gage. The experimental results are shown in Fig. 1. They indicate that: 1) Sulfur can be removed from liquid iron alloys by vacuum treatment; 2) The desulfurization is enhanced by the presence of silicon, carbon, and aluminum, all these elements increase the activity of sulfur dissolved in liquid iron;4 3) The pronounced effect of silicon indicates that probably a volatile silicon sulfide is formed, Alcock and Richardson5 have observed a similar phenomenon; 4) The same rate of desulfurization was obtained when the metal was contained in either magnesia or silica crucibles. There is a road into the microscopic realm that has remained untraveled through all these years of intense activity with high-power optical and electron microscopy. The road is worthy of careful scouting by metallurgists and other investigators, for it leads into relatively new country and it makes some areas accessible that heretofore could be reached only by very indirect paths or by the use of imagination. And when the road passes through familiar territory it frequently permits a new view of commonplace things that should prove of value from time to time. An accepted way to interest people in new sights such as this is to present an illustrated travelogue. This I propose to do, using many pictures taken in my recent exploration of this road. In the manner of travelogues, I shall touch briefly upon a large number of different subjects in physical metallurgy and shall attempt to give an exhaustive treatment of none, for the objective is to provide a means for further research, to interest others in it, and to indicate what appears at the moment to be profitable directions for it to take. The method I shall present involves X-rays, but does not make use of the usual accompaniments of X-ray research such as reciprocal lattices, Fourier series, or the stereographic projection. The method is so simple in its fundamentals that it could have been developed 2o years ago, or perhaps even 30 years ago. It is well to have a destination for our travels, so that when we are through we shall have explored some region of importance, despite our preoccupation with the novel means of transportation and our interest in the sights to be seen along the way. So let us name the Cold-worked State as our destination, and make side trips into the territories known as Recovery, Recrystallization, and Precipitation-hardening. A great many investigations have been made of the nature of cold-worked metal, and a great variety of methods used, many of which are indirect, such as X-ray line intensities, X-ray line widths, calori-metric measurements, and magnetic measurements. Since comprehensive reviews of these investigations have been published in recent years, they need not be discussed here. The investigations that were the direct forerunners of the present work should be first mentioned. In 1931 I became interested in the structure of individual spots in X-ray diffraction patterns.l When a crystal is placed in the narrow pencil of X-rays in a Laue camera, the spots recorded on the film are not always uniformly black, but may have an internal structure. The meaning of this may be understood from Fig. I, which represents a narrow beam containing X-rays of many wave lengths (''general radiation") penetrating a crystal in the direction of the arrow and forming a pattern on the vertical film at the right.

INTRODUCTION IT is a generally recognized fact that by repeated straining the fracture stress of any metal is reduced to a fraction of its value for static loading. The value of this fatigue strength depends upon numerous factors, such as the states of strain and stress, the limits of straining, and the number of repeated loadings or cycles.1.2,3 The large volume of previous investigations on fatigue is concerned entirely with large numbers of cycles, say exceeding 10,000 and up to 500,000,000. However, the changes in fracture stress and fracture strain occurring after a small number of repeated loadings have attracted little attention. Apparently the only investigations of this type are those byLudwik4,5 who subjected steel, copper, and aluminum wire to repeated torsion. In each test the torque was varied between identical values in the two directions of twisting. Depending upon the magnitude of the moment, fracturing occurred after a number of cycles, up to 10,000. The results of Ludwik's tests will be discussed later. Such torsion does not readily yield actual stress and strain values. Therefore a preliminary study was made of the effects of repeated direct stresses, i.e., tension and compression stresses. Because such tests are considerably more tedious than torsion tests, only high stresses were used in the preliminary work, yielding definite changes in metal properties after a few cycles. It was found in these tests that strains could be controlled more readily than stresses in the investigated range of high stresses. This paper, consequently, deals with the effects of strains of equal magnitude but different signs. The metal was first prestrained in static tension by a certain amount then subjected to compression to yield the same amount of strain after unloading. This loading cycle was repeated up to a maximum of seven times. After various cycles, the stress-strain curves in tension were determined, up to fracturing. As material for these tests, the aluminum alloy 24ST was selected because it exhibits a comparatively small amount of necking in the tension test. This alloy permitted, therefore, rather accurate control at the high strains necessary to produce fatigue failures at less than seven cycles. The results of this investigation appear sufficiently interesting to extend the method of attack in various directions. It is intended to study (I) the effects of cycles up to a few thousands and (2) the effects of strains of different magnitude in tension and compression, respectively. The latter variable also includes as a special case the effects of compressive strains.

Zinc smelters in the central western States have established a very high standard of purity for blende-concentrates, viz., zinc 60, iron less than 3, and lead less than 1 per cent. The very low percentage of iron is made possible by the blende containing less than 0.5 per cent. of isomorphous iron sulphide and by the sparing occurrence of pyritic material in the large blende-deposits of southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas. The blende in these districts occurs in sub-carboniferous limestone, and is associated with chert, residual clay, cal-cite, pyrite or marcasite and bitumen. The different minerals are coarse and therefore readily separated by mechanical washing from the blende, with the exception of pyrite and marcasite, as blende has a specific gravity of from 3.9 to 4.1; marcasite, from 4.85 to 4.90; and pyrite, from 4.95 to 5.10. The common procedure of dressing the ores' is to crush in a breaker, size in a trommel with 0.5-in. holes, pass the over-size through roughing-rolls and then jig the ore, now reduced to 0.5 in. maximum size, in roughing multiple-sieve jigs. The products of these are waste-tailings, side-discharge coarse concentrates, side-discharge coarse middlings and bottom-discharge fine middlings. The coarse concentrates are sent to the market. The coarse middlings are crushed in middlings-rolls and brought back into the system by feeding into the main trommel. The fine middlings are cleaned upon finishing-jigs. H. R. BIANCO*—I should like to ask Mr. Collins if that statement he made about the addition of drosses to the blast furnace slowing down the blast furnace is a result of his own experience or a result of the experience of some older metallurgists; and perhaps I should ask him to define the type of drosses that he means. A. A. COLLINS (author's reply)— That has been my own personal experience with dross. On various occasions at Chihuahua we attempted to incorporate the dross in our regular blast furnace charge and to shut down the dross re-verberatory to try to save some money. As expected, we had very poor results. I think that Ed Fleming will well remember on one occasion, that was back about 1933, when we attempted the first experiment along this line, and as a result of the sulphur addition to the blast furnace to matte out the copper we ended up with hanging furnaces and mushy slags and abandoned the dross experiment, once again turning to the use of the reverbera-tory for handling dross. H. R. BIANCO—Is that dross you refer to from the drossing kettle ? A. A. COLLINS—Yes, the dross that I am referring to came from drossing kettles. Furthermore, to back up my previous assertion, I had occasion in 1943, while up at Leadville, to once again experience the routing of dross through the blast furnace with its sulphur addition, since they had no dross re-verberatory, and to observe that once thf dross was removed, the furnace was speeded up almost 100 tons a day. All of these are personal experiences and I think that Mr. Feddersen also has had a little experience along this line —in fact, I believe all of us have had some experience. H. R. BIANCO—I know at Trail they recirculate considerable dross through the blast furnaces and we also recirculate dross at Herculaneuin and I am not aware that it has done much towards slowing down the blast furnace. A. A. COLLINS—We have always had very poor results. In the first place you have got to add a sulphur addition to pick up that copper and once you do that, that sulphur is apt to combine with some of the zinc and you are going to form a little mush; before you know it you have furnace hangs and a poor working furnace. Now of course that depends on the amount of zinc you have on charge. But in 1943, Leadville had roughly about 7 pet zinc in their slag and it worked very poorly. Previously when they had 4 or 5 pet zinc in their slag it did not matter. B. L. SACKETT* At Tooele we had a great deal of experience with copper. We have always been able to keep a lead well, however, in spite of the fact we have run as much as 5 pet copper and only 15 pet lead on the charge. But regarding the handling of dross, our dross reverberatory furnace is only 7 or 8 years old. Before that we recirculated the dross through the furnace and thought we were doing a pretty nice job. Of course these things are all more or less relative—in other words you establish a certain condition much better than one of a few years ago and possibly as good as any other of which you know and you think you have pretty good results. When we first took the dross off of the blast furnace and put it through the dross reverberatory furnace we immediately found out that we had gained something very real in furnace speed. Since that time there have been occasions when, because of the dross reverberatory being down, we have had to use dross again through the blast furnace and that has checked our original experience in slowing down the furnace very definitely. So we feel that a dross reverberatory is a very valuable asset at the Tooele Plant. A. A. CENTER*—Mr. Sackett's being here reminds me of trying to run with a minimum of lead concentrates the maximum of dross producing electrolytic zinc plant residue. He came up from International Smelting Co. to help us get started on that. We took an old copper blast furnace at Great Falls, Montana, and made a lead furnace out of it by putting a lead well on the other long side which of course is a very unorthodox lead blast furnace. Our aim was to treat the residue from the electrolytic zinc plant, as I said, with a minimum of lead concentrates. That meant a maximum amount of dross. At that time selective flotation was not general practice, so our zinc concentrates ran relatively high in copper and other dross-producing elements; and of course these were largely in the zinc plant residue. I think we might call it muscle metallurgy, but we had an interesting, successful experience there and we ran for over a year thanks to Mr. Sackett's helping us get started. I have the details, but time does not permit. We did well enough so that the A. S. and R. Co. at East Helena kept boosting up the offer to us for the electrolytic zinc plant residue and there was not enough lead concentrate to supply two lead smelters there in Montana, so the matter finally finished up by the A. S. and R. Co. taking all of the residue under long term contracts.

In order to test the performance of ZrO, (CaO) and Tho,(Yz03) electrolytes in the electrochemical determination of oxygen activities in liquid metals at steel-rrzakitng temperatures , electromotive force measurements have been made with the following cells: The oxygen-- activities are calculated from the electmrnotive forces for the investigated systems. The standard free energy of- formation of MnO and the activity of manganese in Fe-Mn melts are derived. Indications are that the Zr 0z(Ca0) electrolyte exhibits little electronic conductivity at oxygen pressures as low as 10'a atnz at 1600°C; however, the partial electronic conductivity may become noticeable at lower oxygen activities. The Tho,(Yz03) electrolyte is found to be an ionic conductor at the oxygen pressure as low as that for the Mn + MnO equilibrium, but exhibits partial electronic conductivity at oxygen pressures higher than 10"1 atm (1500°C). fi. better control of oxidation and deoxidation reactions in steelmaking may be facilitated if the oxygen activity in the steel is known during various stages of the process. In the present work oxygen activities have been measured in liquid iron, manganese, and iron alloys with galvanic cells using ZrOz(CaO) and s solid electrolytes with the object of establishing the range of oxygen pressure in which these materials can be used as electrolytes at steelmaking temperatures. Calcia-stabilized zirconia and Tho2-Y203 solid solutions are oxygen ion conductors. Such electrolytes were first used by Kiukkola and Wagner1 and Peters and ~ann' in galvanic cells for the determination of thermodynamicquantities of oxide systems in the temperature range 700" to 1200°C. At these moderate temperatures calcia-stabilized zirconia has been found to exhibit predominantly ionic conductivity at oxygen pressures as low as those for the Cr + Crz03 equilibrium,394 but at lower oxygen pressures elec- tronic contribution to conductivity becomes significants4 The Th02-Y203 solid solutions are ionic conductors at oxygen pressures lower than those applicable to zirconia base electrolytes.5'6 At high oxygen pressures Thoz base electrolytes exhibit significant p-type semiconduction. At the time the present experiments were carried out several papers1'-* were published on the electrochemical determination of oxygen activities in liquid iron using the ZrOz(CaO) electrolyte. The results of different authors do not agree well. For instance, according to Fischer and ~ckermann" stabilized zirconia can be used to measure oxygen contents in liquid iron larger than 0.02 wt pct, but according to Baker and west1' ZrOz(CaO) cannot be used for the determination of oxygen content in liquid iron because of high electronic contribution to the conductivity. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the apparatus used. About 500 g of liquid metal is contained in a crucible into which a stabilized zirconia or Th02(Y203) tube is immersed. A platinum contact wire is pressed (with a spring mechanism) against the inside bottom wall of the electrolyte tube. The tube is flushed continuously with a stream of air, CO-CO, (or Hz-C02) (at 0.96 atm and at a rate of about 300 cu cm per min), via an alumina tube inserted inside the electrolyte tube. This alumina tube also contains the Pt-Pt/10 pct Rh thermocouple. A capillary alumina tube shielding the other contact wire is immersed in the melt. The molybdenum contact wires were used mostly; in some cases platinum wire was employed. Molybdenum has the advantage that it dissolves more slowly in the melt than platinum. The whole cell was contained in the alumina reaction tube of a resistance furnace with molybdenum winding. The reaction tube was closed gas tight at both ends and flushed continuously with argon. Because of the poor thermal shock resistance of the electrolyte tubes the cell had to be assembled in the cold furnace. The electrolyte tube and alumina sheath

WALLACE MCKEEHAN, Douglas, Ariz. (communication to the Secretary*).-In going over this report, which I have done very carefully, I find that the summary as composed deals with the various problems almost entirely from the employer's standpoint and that practically no consideration is given to the employee's point of view. An experience of 3 ½ years as safety inspector, and almost 30 years as workman-and official, has convinced me that any plan for the betterment of working conditions which will achieve any degree of success must give the workmen their share of responsibility and allow them full participation. The company may finance and direct the movement, but its ultimate success depends upon the support given by the workmen. The cooperation of the men doing the actual work is so essential that all writers insist that this must be secured, but they do not agree as to how this can best be done.

Variations of the EVOP technique are accepted as the foun- dation in the development of Erie Mining Company's mining, concentrating and pelletizing complex at Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. The basic one-variable- at-a-time technique served its purpose through the laboratory pilot plant as well as the full-scale production sized pilot plant. However, recognition by Erie Mining Company management of the potential of computer application and statistical experimentation in plant operation and testing led to acquisition of an IBM 1620 computer in 1961. Adaptation of established techniques in statistically designed experimentation and analysis of results is presented in actual case form including the following: 1. Determination and use of variance, standard deviation, standard errors; application of t-test in determining true differences between daily aver ages of product assays; formulation of quality control limits; determining sample size; and application of normality tests will be discussed. 2. Use of mathematical modeling and regression analysis for establishing mill storage conditions based on bin level indicator lights. 3. Polyvariable random balance design of a balling circuit test and resultant identification of primary control variables.

The Los Bronces copper deposit is located on the west side of the Andes Mountains in central Chile about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Santiago. The deposit consists of a hydrothermal breccia complex that was emplaced in the western part of an earlier porphyry copper mineral system. This system exhibits propylitic, sericitic, silicic to potassic hydrothermal alteration with disseminated and stockwork copper-molybdenum sulfide mineralization over an area of about 12 km2 (5 sq. miles). The Rio Blanco Mine, about 800 m (0.5 miles) east of Los Bronces, is an underground block caving mine located in the central part of this system. The mineralization at Rio Blanco is characterized by one of the highest primary copper grades known for porphyry copper systems. Present mining at Los Bronces is from an open pit located in the northern part of a hydrothermal complex that is composed of at least seven different copper-bearing tourmaline breccia pipes. Together these pipe form one large contiguous body about 2 km (1.2 miles) long and 0.7 km (0.4 miles) wide at the surface. This body crops out at elevations of between 3.5 and 4.1 km (2 and 2.5 miles) above sea level. Each breccia pipe has a characteristic shape, matrix, type and degree of mineralization and alteration. Quartz, tourmaline, specularite, anhydrite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sericite, chlorite, and rock flour are present in significant quantities in most breccia matrices. The clasts consist mainly of quartz monzonite, andesite, and minor amounts of quartz latite porphyry. The seven different breccia pipes are identified, from oldest to youngest, as Ghost, Central, Western, Infiernillo, Fine Gray, Anhydrite, and Donoso. The breccias coalesce, interfinger, or display gradational contacts. In places they form sharp contacts with each other and with the surrounding intrusive or volcanic host rocks. Early breccias are disrupted or cut by subsequent breccia events. Explosive emplacement was followed by collapse after the release of hydrothermal pressures. The Los Bronces breccia complex has sharp contacts with the surrounding intrusive stock and andesites. These contacts dip inward on the north, west, and south margins. The eastern contact is nearly vertical and/or dips slightly outward and suggests a westward tilting of the body of about 15° after emplacement. The breccia complex is not fully explored at depth, but is known to extend at least below the 3 km (2 mile) elevation in its central eastern part, about 1 km (0.6 miles) below the highest breccia outcrop. Primary copper sulfide minerals are most abundant in the Donoso and Infiernillo breccias where the matrix consists mostly of tourmaline, quartz, sulfides, specularite, and/or chlorite with minor amounts of rock flour, sericite, and clay. The volume of the matrix material is mostly smaller than in the other breccias. Secondary enrichment enhanced the primary copper grade in the southern two-thirds of the Los Bronces breccia complex and in much of the surrounding porphyry system. Primary grades of 0.3% to 0.5% copper have been enriched to approximately 0.9%. This enrichment may extend from surface outcrops to a depth of more than 500 m (1, 640 ft) in more permeable parts of the breccia complex. A leached and oxidized capping of variable thickness covers a large part of the enriched layer and exceeds 300 m (984 ft) at one location. The shape and depth of the enrichment blanket and the capping suggest that the enrichment process is still active.

Modern vibrating screening dates from about 1910 at which time the forerunner of the present day two bearing and four bearing circular motion inclined vibrating screens were first introduced. These simple machines consisted of a screen box holding some kind of a screening surface to which was attached an off-center shaft or a shaft with an off-center weight which was rotated. The rotation of these shafts caused a shivering motion to the screen box and produced the first vibrating screen. In the 1920's and early 30's, the box designs were improved and the mechanisms designs were also improved and by 1940, vibrating screens were an important part of most process plants. In the early days when the screen sizes were dictated by how much could be shoveled onto the screen box and by the force that a particular mechanism could produce, not much thought was given to the proper sizing of the particular units. As mechanism and body design improved the ability to predict vibrating screen capacity at various openings became more important. In the late 1930's, a set of empirical capacities came to be used. with few modifications, these capacities are still in use today, both by those companies that use a formula involving only the amount of fine material in a feed, and by those companies using a formula in which the total feed to a particular screen is used. In either method of calculation, the empirical values are based on these ideal conditions: (1) The material being fed to the screen contains 25% oversize. (2) The feed to the screen contains 40% half size material. (3) The material has a bulk density of 1.6 T/Cu.M. (100 lbs/cu.ft.). (4) The screening surface has an open area of 50%. (5) The material is dry, free flowing and relatively cubical. (6) The maximum screening efficiency required is between 90 and 95%. It is obvious that these conditions do not occur in natural or crushed size distributions. Therefore, modifications must be made to these empirical values to allow for the calculation of a vibrating screen for a particular set of conditions. The Red Mountain district, in Ouray County, Colorado, has been already referred to in the Transactions of the Institute, and notably in papers by Mr. T. B. Comstock, on " The Geology and VeinStructure of Southwestern Colorado" (Trans., xv., 218), and on " Hot-Spring Formations in Red Mountain District, Colorado—A Reply to the Criticisms of Mr. Emmons" (Trans., xvii., 261), and in the paper of Mr. S. F. Emmons, on " Structural Relations of Ore-Deposits" (Tram., xvi., 804). The district has attracted much attention from those interested in geology, because it seems to present a variety of ore-deposits rarely, if ever, met with elsewhere, and one which cannot be described by such well-understood terms as fissure-veins, bedded-deposits, or contact-formation. It will be the scope of this paper to note briefly, from the writer's experience in developing the Yankee Girl, Guston and other Red Mountain properties,—first, observed facts as to the ore occurrence and formation, and second, certain unsolved geological questions. In the past 15 years a considerable amount of experimental and theoretical work has been done concerning the onset of convection in liquids as a result of interm1 density gradients. This work, which has been doue in many different fields, is reviewed here and extended slightly to give a rrlore quantitative understanding to the probletrz of conzection in liquid metal dlffusion experinletzts. In liquid metal systems the capillary reservoir technique is currently used, almost exclusively, to measure diffusion coefficients. In this technique it is necessary that the liquid be stagnant in order to avoid mixing by means of convection currents. Convective mixing may result from: 1) convection produced as a result of the initial immersion of the capillary; 2) convection produced in the region of the capillary mouth as the result of the stirring frequency used to avoid solute buildup in the reservoir near the capillary mouth; 3) convection produced during solidification as a result of the volume change; and 4) convection produced as a result of local density differences within the liquid in the capillary. The first three types of convection have been discussed elsewhere1-a and are only mentioned for completeness here. This work is concerned only with the fourth type of convection. Local density differences will arise within the liquid as a result of either a temperature gradient or a concentration gradient. It is usually, but not always, recognized by those employing the capillary reservoir technique that the top of the capillary should be kept slightly hotter than the bottom and that the light element should be made to migrate downward in order to avoid convection. In the past 15 years a considerable amount of work, both theoretical and experimental, has been done in a number of different fields which bear on this problem. This work is reviewed here and extended slightly in an effort to give a more quantitative understanding of the convective motion produced in vertical capillaries by local density differences. The Stokes-Navier equations for an incompressible fluid of constant viscosity in a gravitational field may be written as: %L + (v?)v = - ?£ + Wv - g£ [1] where F is the velocity, t the time, P the pressure, p the density, v the kinematic viscosity, g the gravitational acceleration, and k a unit vector in the vertical direction. A successful diffusion experiment requires the liquid to be motionless, and under this condition Eq. [I] becomes: where a is the thermal expansion coefficient [a =-(l/po)(dp/d)], a' is a solute expansion coefficient [a' = -(l/po)(dp/d)], and the solute is taken as that component which makes a' a positive number. Combining with Eq. [3] the following restriction is obtained: Since there is no fixed relation between VT and VC in a binary diffusion experiment, Eq. [5] shows that the condition of fluid motionlessness requires both the temperature gradient and the concentration gradient to be vertically directed. Given this condition of a density gradient in the vertical direction only, it is obvious that, as this vertical density gradient increases from negative to positive values, the motionless liquid will eventually become unstable and convective movement will begin. The classical treatment of this type of instability problem was given by aleih' in 1916 for the case of a thin fluid film of infinite horizontal extent; and a very comprehensive text has recently been written on the subject by handrasekhar.' It is found that convective motion does not begin until a dimensionless number involving the density gradient exceeds a certain critical value. This dimensionless number is generally referred to as the Rayleigh number, R, and it is equal to the product of the Prandtl and Grashof numbers. For the sake of clarity a distinction will be made between two types of free convection produced by internal density gradients. In the first case a density gradient is present in the vertical direction only, and, since the convection begins only after a critical gradient is attained, this case will be called threshold convection. In the second case a horizontal density gradient is present and in this case a finite convection velocity is produced by a finite density gradient so that it will be termed thresholdless convection. Some experimentalists have performed diffusion experiments using capillaries which were placed in a horizontal or inclined position in order to avoid convection. These positions do put the small capillary dimension in the vertical direction and, consequently, they would be less prone to threshold convection than the vertical position. The problem of determining oxygen levels in liquid steel to aid in deoxidation control has received general attention for a number of years. Work in this direction started at the B.H.P. Central Research Laboratories early in 1967 with an evaluation of sampling techniques followed by vacuum fusion analysis to determine the oxygen content of the samples (1). It was found that these techniques had a number of drawbacks if they were to be used for deoxidation control. The method of analysis was rather too slow to allow effective control and measured total oxygen level rather than dissolved oxygen. Furthermore, the results were found to be very variable due to slag entrainment in the samples. Attention therefore turned to the galvanic cell method using a solid oxygen ion conductive electrolyte such as cubic stabilised zirconia. The ionic conductivity properties of electrolytes such as (ZrO2) 85 (CaO).15 had been studied by a number of investigators and had already been applied to the measurement of oxygen activity in gases, in lower melting metals such as copper, lead, tin, silver, alkali metals and indeed the first studies in steel had been made (2,3). Since then the results of a number of studies in the development of an expendable oxygen probe for steel have been reported (4-9).

A nitride, believed to be Si3N, has been separated from three nitrided silicon steels. Germanium nitride, Ge3N4, has been prepared from pure germanium. Comparison of the diffraction patterns indicates that the two nitrides are isomorphous; on orthorhombic structure is suggested in place of the rhombohedral structure previously reported for Ge3N4. THE possibility that a nitride of silicon may, under appropriate conditions, precipitate in silicon steels or in steels killed with silicon makes it desirable to have some positive means of identifying such a compound. One such means is the X-ray or electron diffraction pattern of the nitride. A review of the meager data in the literature indicates that the nitride most likely to form is Si3N4, a conclusion supported by the results of a study of nitrided silicon steels to be published shortly by L. S. Darken and R. P. Smith, of this Laboratory. Unfortunately, there is available no diffraction pattern for this nitride. Data have been reported, however, for Ge3N4 which, judging from the similarity between germanium and silicon, might be expected to be isomorphous with Si3N4. An effort was made, therefore, to form such a silicon nitride, to determine its composition and diffraction pattern and, if possible, its structure. To this end a series of three silicon steels was nitrided under controlled conditions with the resultant formation of nitride particles which yielded an electron diffraction pattern in situ. The particles were then extracted from the steel and an attempt was made to determine their chemical composition. X-ray and electron diffraction patterns were also obtained from the extracted particles, which indicate that the nitride is isomorphous with Ge3N4, although a complete determination of the structure has not been possible. These results show that a silicon nitride with a well-defined diffraction pattern can form in silicon steels, and they suggest that this nitride is Si3N4. Materials and Procedures The sillicon steels investigated were In the form of thin sheet or strip and had the composition shown in Table I. The 0.58 and 1.21 pct Si steels were nitrided by holding them at 1110°F in an H2-NH3 atmosphere containing 3 pct ammonia for 48 hr. The nitride particle size was increased by subsequent heating at 1500°F for 13 1/2 hr in helium. The resulting microstructure is shown in Fig. 1. The steel containing 3.20 pct Si was nitrided at 1200°F for 16 1/2 hr after which it was held in helium at 1500°F for 4 hr. Its structure as seen under the electron microscope is illustrated by Fig. 2. As would be expected from the higher silicon content and the shorter holding time at 1500 °F, the nitride particles are smaller and more numerous than those in the 1.21 pct Si steel. The ammonia-hydrogen treatment reduced the carbon content of the steels to a very low level, so no interference was encountered from carbon or carbides. In the case of the 3.2 pct Si steel, the carbon was reduced to 0.003 pct before nitriding by heating in dry hydrogen. Attempts to obtain an X-ray diffraction pattern from polished and etched surfaces of the 1.21 and the 3.20 pct Si steels were unsuccessful. However, an electron diffraction pattern was obtained from the surface of the steels. The interplanar spacings obtained from these patterns arc shown in Table 11, col. 5. The nitride particles were then extracted from all three steels by dissolving the ferrite matrix in bromine-methyl acetate, the solution used in the Beeghly method for the extraction of aluminum nitride from steel. X-ray diffraction patterns of these residues, obtained by means of a spectrometer and by a 57 mm Debye-Scherrer powder camera using filtered cobalt or chromium radiation, are given in Table II along with the pattern obtained by
