A NEW milestone in the progress of photography and subsurface exploration was reached when the Chief of Army Engineers announced the development of the NX borehole camera. In obtaining continuous undistorted cylindrical color pictures of dry or water-filled borings the device surpasses all other cameras designed for photographing interior surfaces of pipes, wells, and conduits. The usefulness of the camera and the unique projector that comes with it are at once apparent. To the geological, mining, and civil engineer alike it signifies the end of guesswork with respect to underground conditions that have eluded identification by conventional core-drilling methods. To the medical profession it may well signal new progress in photo optics which could result in cylindrical color photographs supplementing the X-ray and existing photographic methods used in exploratory surgery.

BIRINGUCCIO was born in Siena in 1480, the son of Paolo and Lucrezia di Bartolommeo Biringuccio.* He was baptized on October 20 of that year with the given names Vannoccio Vincenzio Austino Luca. His father appears to have been an architect, for in 1504 he was paid 600 scudi for his work on the walls of the Communal Palace and at the same time he was superintendent of streets for the city. The course of Biringuccio's life followed closely the checkered fortunes of the Petrucci family of Siena. A warm supporter of Pandolfo Petrucci, Biringuccio did not falter in his allegiance to the family and their party during his lifetime. It was probably to the protection and patronage of this lord that he was indebted for the opportunity to travel widely through Italy and into Germany during his early years and so to lay the foundation for the extensive knowledge of the subjects he was to describe in the Pirotechnia. In 1507, as he himself indicates (p. 48), he was 'in Friuli and. Carnia in northern Italy after having traveled in Germany,, and he also visited the, brass, works in Milan. After returning to Siena; he was sent by Pandolfo to direct the iron mines in near-by Boccheggiano. When Pandolfo died in 1512 (in which year Biringuccio's s father also died), Biringuccio continued to support the Petrucci family in the person of Pandolfo's son, Borghese, who succeeded, to the rule. Under his patronage, Biringuccio was appointed to a post in: the Armoury of the Siena Commune in 1513. In ISIS a popular uprising forced Borghese and his followers, including Biringuccio, to flee from Siena. Biringuccio and the goldsmith Francesco Castori, head of the mint, were accused of having debased the coinage alloy with the knowledge and consent of Borghese. When he failed to appear in 1516 to answer these charges-which may well have been invented by the opposing political faction-Biringuccio was declared a rebel and was exiled as a traitor to the Republic. He then traveled about Italy, was in Rome and Naples, and visited Sicily in 1517.

Shortly after production was begun at the Duval Sierrita concentrator in February 1970, it became evident that difficulties would be experienced in reaching the designed operating level of 72,000 stpd. Since the major restrictions to production resided in the reduction crushing system, a comprehensive program was initiated to evaluate and optimize all crusher parameters affecting production. Positive relationships were established between production rate and crusher power draught, mantle support pressure, crusher setting, and crusher throw. Other parameters evaluated were the effects of feed distribution, crusher speed, mantle and concave configuration, choke feeding, and ore type. In order to obtain maximum production, it was also imperative that the mechanical integrity of the crushers be improved. Therefore, redesign of nearly the entire crusher assemblage, including such items as the top shell, bushings, and the mantle hydraulic support system, was required. In addition, automatic control stategies were evaluated and detailed operating guidelines were established. As a result of this extensive crusher examination, the limitation on plant throughput has been shifted to the grinding section, and a monthly average production level of 86,000 stpd is currently achieved. Programs under current evaluation are aimed at further increasing capacity to exceed 90,000 stpd.

The method of making oxide of zinc direct from the ore was invented and developed at the works of The New Jersey Zinc Co. at Newark in the middle of the last century. The process was invented by Burrows, who had not the ability, financial or technical, to work out the details necessary to make it of commercial value. This was done by Col. Wetherill, whose name is commonly attached to this process. The grate bars used are also frequently called Wetherill grates, which is a misnomer because they were in common use for boiler firing at the time, and he never claimed their invention. The invention of the process was due to the efforts of The New Jersey Zinc Co. to find a profitable means of working the ores from Franklin and Sterling Hill, N. J. These are a mixture of franklinite, willemite, and zincite, containing about 20 per cent. of zinc. The first attempts were to make spelter, which were not successful, owing to the low grade of the ore and the fusibility of the residue. Failing in this, the next attempt was to make oxide in large muffles and reverberatory furnaces. This succeeded, although the cost of operation was high, the recovery low, and the quality of the product uncertain. In 1855, the new process was patented and has been in successful operation ever since. Essentially, the process is to spread a mixture of coal and ore on a body of burning coal on a perforated grate, and blow an excess of air through the grate. The zinc is reduced in contact with the coal, volatilized and burned by the excess of air in the upper part of the furnace and in the flues. It is then carried to the bag rooms by the excess air and products of combustion which are foreed through the flues by fans. In its main features, the process is the same today as at the time of its invention, but the details have been so modified that it would hardly be recognized by its originators. OrEs The process is applicable to all the oxidized ores of zinc and to roasted sulphides, provided the gangue is not so fusible as to leave a residue that is impervious to the blast. THIS paper treats primarily of the valuation of developed coal properties by the method of capitalizing their estimated average future earnings. However, in it reference is also made to valuations of undeveloped coal lands and to various methods of appraisal other than by future earnings. FUNDAMENTAL VALUATION PRINCIPLES Before discussing in detail coal property valuations, a few statements bearing on the general subject will be made to present certain of the writer's views on the question as a whole. 1. A certain property at a given time has but, one true value. This is not universally admitted. The appraiser rather frequently finds that a coal owner has in mind three valuations for his holdings; one, the figure at which he feels they should be appraised for taxation purposes; another, the much higher one that should be used if a loan is to he negotiated on the property; and a third, intermediate between the other two, the price for which he would be willing to dispose of his holdings were they for sale. The last is usually nearest to the true value, and because this is so the statement is generally accepted that the fair value of such a property is the price arrived at by negotiation between a willing seller and a willing buyer who are otherwise disinterested. 2. Notwithstanding the foregoing, it is only very generally and approximately true that the proper measure of the value of a given developed1 coal acreage is the unit or per-acre price for which one or more bodies of similar coal in the salve district have been sold recently. To give a few reasons why such a measure of value can not be strictly applied, it may be noted:

TO assist the mining industry in attacking problems of water control, the U. S. Geological Survey has begun a program of research in mining hydrology. In certain fundamental respects water control is similar to development of water supplies from wells or to the drainage of agricultural lands, as many of the tools developed in recent years for quantitative ground-water problems are applicable, with modification, to mine-water problems. In 1952 a 30-day pumping test conducted jointly by the Eureka Corp. Ltd. and the Defense Minerals Exploration Agency provided an opportunity to gain knowledge concerning water movements around a flooded mine shaft. The methods of analyzing the data may be used as a guide for the evaluation of similar problems elsewhere. The Fad shaft of the Eureka Corp. is on Ruby Hill, 1 1/2 miles west of Eureka, Nev. The shaft was completed at a depth of 2465 ft in November 1947 at a site adjacent to the downfaulted block in which the ore was found. As the drift on the 2250 level progressed toward the ore zone, a large flow of water was encountered after the Martin fault was intersected. This flow exceeded the installed pump capacity, and an unsuccessful attempt to recover the shaft and the 2250 level was made in 1948.1, 2 Geology and Hydrology: The complex structure of Ruby Hill is that of an anticline broken first by thrust faulting and later by normal faults. The present orebody comprises several mineralized zones within a block of the Eldorado limestone of middle Cambrian age which was downfaulted 1400 to 1600 ft, and it may be related to a similar body mined at a higher level south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the depth of the largest zone of ore the block is roughly rectangular in shape, about 1000 ft wide and 1500 ft long, and dips about 30" NE, see Fig. 1. It is apparently bounded on the south by the Ruby Hill fault, on the east by the Jackson fault, on the north by the Martin fault, and the west by the Bowman fault. Within the block, but between the Ruby Hill and the Martin faults, are the Office and Adams Hills faults; west of the block and the Bowman fault are the Albion and Spring Valley faults. There are many conflicting reports concerning the water-yielding characteristics of the Eldorado limestone and the condition of the fault zones, that is, whether they are open or tight. However, the diamond-drill records indicate that open spaces as much as 2 or 3 ft across were encountered, and considerable cementing and lining of holes was necessary to maintain circulation of drilling fluid. There is also evidence that the Eldorado limestone was cavernous where it was mined in the early days south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the site of the Fad shaft the formations encountered from the surface down included the Pogonip limestone, Dunderberg shale, Hamburg limestone, and Secret Canyon shale. These formations did not yield large quantities of water to the shaft. The Pogonip limestone, which appears to be permeable and might yield water elsewhere, is above the water table in the vicinity of the shaft. The Secret Canyon shale, immediately overlying the Eldorado in some places but in most places separated from it by the Geddes limestone,3 is apparently tight and does not transmit water. During the 30-day test period the shale briefly confined the water in the underlying formations so that artesian conditions were observed in drillholes E and F, which are cased into the Eldorado limestone, whereas unconfined conditions were observed in drillholes B, C, and D, which were open to the shale. The Geddes limestone, which normally lies between the Secret Canyon shale and the Eldorado limestone, was not encountered in the Fad shaft. The Geddes, a flaggy, fractured limestone, is reported capable of yielding large volumes of water. Water stored in the interstices of this thin-bedded limestone within the Ruby Hill fault zone on the 1200 level of the Locan shaft drowned the pumps in 1923 when the Richmond-Eureka Mining Co. attempted to explore the area along the fault. Eldorado limestone was not encountered in the Fad shaft. In the ore-block area the Eldorado limestone was not entirely offset from other water-yielding formations by movement along the Bowman fault; therefore it may be hydraulically connected with the other formations. Adjacent to the Ruby Hill, Jackson, and Martin faults, the Eldorado lies in contact with other possible water-yielding formations. One of these, the Prospect Mountain quartzite, is separated from the Eldorado by thin, sheared, and broken beds of the Geddes within the Ruby Hill fault zone. A limited examination by the author of the Prospect Mountain quartzite in the Richmond mine at a higher level and south of the Ruby Hill fault indicates that the quartzite is poorly permeable. The monzonite mass south of the quartzite would be a further barrier to the flow of water. The poor permeability of this area is substantiated by records of levels at which water was encountered south of the Ruby Hill fault. In view of the normally low rate of ground-water recharge, if this desert area had been permeable, water levels could not have been maintained at altitudes of many hundred feet above the present water table west and north of Ruby Hill. Thus the ore-bearing block of Eldorado limestone is in contact with possible water-yielding rocks on at least two sides, and if the fault zones are possible conduits for water circulation the geologic and hydrologic conditions are suitable for the infinite-aquifer type of analysis as used and modified here. History of Pumping: During sinking of the Fad shaft a maximum pumping rate of 1500 gpm kept the shaft dewatered sufficiently, but in March 1948, after the 2250 level drift passed through the Martin fault into the Eldorado limestone, the pumps and shaft were flooded. Various phases of the embrittlement of solid copper containing oxygen by the action of reducing gases at high temperatures are familiar to readers of metallurgical literature through the work of many experimenters. In 1900, Heynl recorded observations of copper being heated in hydrogen with the development of fine cracks, the result of the formation of steam within the metal through the action of hydrogen on the copper oxide usually found in copper. Archbutt,2 in 1905, published the results of experiments, showing that all oxygen can be removed from copper by heating to redness, for several hours, in hydrogen. Intercrystalline cracks and extreme brittle-ness developed. Archbutt attributed the brittleness to the reduction of oxides present in the copper. Bengough and Hil1,3 in 1910, encountered the now well-known embrittlement at the outset of their investigation and stated in their paper: It soon became evident that the effect of any heat treatment depended largely on the presence or absence of reducing gases in the atmosphere of the furnace, as well as on its temperature. Hence it became necessary to adopt a somewhat elaborate scheme of heat treatment. The authors found embrittlement in separate experiments due to both hydrogen and carbon monoxide and concluded that: "The gases ruin the alloys after being heated to about 650" C. in their presence." Ruder,4 in 1916, reported the results of a series of experiments made by heating commercial and deoxidized copper in hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and steam. In agreement with other writers, he found that copper containing oxygen was made brittle by reducing gases, while the deoxidized metal remained unaffected. In the case of

The purpose of this paper is to present briefly a description of some of the special methods of separation or concentration, either singly or in combination with others, and to give certain operating data and examples. Explanation of the usual methods of large-production mill treatment, such as flotation or wet tabling, or of chemically treating industrial minerals, is not included in the scope of this paper, although one of these methods might be, in certain instances, augmented by one or more of the special methods that will be enumerated herein. Description of these special methods will be centered on magnetic separators, electrostatic separators and air flotation or air tables. Magnetic Sepaeatohs In general, separation is achieved by exerting upon a particle some kind of force opposed to gravity, either directly or at an angle. For example, in the Wetherill or cross-belt type of magnetic separator some particles are lifted vertically from the others because they have been exposed to a force to which they respond more readily than particles of lesser magnetic susceptibility. Of course, there is a limitation to this vertical rise, for the particle must be of a high enough susceptibility to receive a magnetic force greater than the 980 dynes per gram of gravitational urge. To overcome this limitation, the induction type of magnetic separator was developed, so that it is only necessary to instill, say, 30 to 60 dynes per gram instead of the 080, to cause a deflection away from the vertical in falling, and that deflection can be used advantageously when falling by inserting a dividing knife-edge. The induction magnetic separator (Fig. 1) has become a fairly well known method of concentrating and purifying. For example, abrasive grain was among the materials that did not respond to the previously best known type of magnetic separator, such as the Wetherill type, and the development of the induction magnetic separator in the plant of a

By means of the C-Sic thermocouple1, liquid metal temperatures have been found to vary much more than was previously supposed, and fortunately these variations can be directly associated with some of our former knowledge which combined to form the "art" of liquid-metal manipulation. Commercial Development of This Device Several types of installations are operating in different plants. There are so many variables in steel plants in regard to operation, procedure, arrangement of pouring platforms, ladles, etc., that most of the installations now in service in this country are "tailor-made"; nevertheless, it is felt that satisfactory gains have been made, inasmuch as each installation has indicated some effect of temperature upon the metallurgical operation, and has pointed the way toward technical and financial benefits. In most cases, it has been necessary to accumulate the temperature data until sufficient metallurgical information is available for the drawing of conclusions. When mechanical difficulties have been eliminated, a distinct correlation of these factors has been obtained. The installations now in service are used for the determination of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace prior to tapping and in ladles from both acid and basic furnaces prior to pouring. Some of the installations are in shops making the higher priced steels; others are in "tonnage shops." The errors of human element, smoke screens and emissivity corrections connected with the use of the optical pyrometer do not affect the C-SiC thermocouple readings. The accuracy of the C-Sic thermocouple and the temperatures measured are discussed later in this paper. One of the most important contributions to the art of electrolytic zinc production has been the aluminum cathode. This has been used in all major production since its commercial developmerit in 1916. The literature is replete with important contributions, some of which may have been replaced by better ones, but thus far there appears no other metal to take the place of aluminum as cathode material. Credit for this innovation goes to Sherard Cowper Coles, of England. When experimenting on the extraction of zinc from Broken Hill ore at Hayle, Cornwall, in 1893, he introduced the aluminum cathode, and in 1895 obtained . British Patent No. 20073. The reason for this dominant position of aluminum as cathode material in zinc sulphate electrolytes is its unique surface, to which electro-deposited metals usually do not tightly adhere. The metal must be of high purity for best results. It is possible to develop a starting-sheet method by which thin electro-deposited sheets of cathode zinc are made and stripped from a smooth aluminum plate. Such thin sheets of cathode zinc may be used as are the copper sheets in standard electrolytic copper-refinery practice. However, complications arise because of extreme warping of the zinc starting sheet after a few hours of deposition, and thus special arrangements must be made to compensate for this abnormality. Reasons advanced for the ease with which deposits may be stripped from the aluminum surface are: (1) presence of a permanent oxide coating on the metal, (2) failure of aluminum to alloy with the deposit, (3) differences in coefficient of expansion, (4) high position of aluminum in the electromotive series of metals. Of these reasons for nonadherence, which may have some application in general deposition, probably the oxide coating has the greatest bearing on the subject of zinc deposition. It is about fifteen years since the development in Germany, largely by Alfred Wilm, of the aluminum alloy called duralumin. In this alloy, combining as it does the tensile strength of mild steel with the lightness and corrosion resistance of aluminum, a distinctly new material was presented to the engineering world. Despite the evident usefulness of this material, however, its commercial development has been slow, due in part to the difficulties involved in its fabrication. In view of the potentially great utility of strong aluminum alloys, it seemed desirable to find means of producing such alloys with better fabricating properties, and work was undertaken with this object in the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America several years ago. This work has resulted in the production of two new types of aluminum alloy of the "strong alloy" class, having distinctly improved fabricating qualities. The knowledge gained has also made it possible to produce alloys of the duralumin type with greater strength and hardness than previously obtained. There have thus been made available some new engineering materials which it is the object of this paper to describe. These alloys, induding duralumin, are fundamentally wrought alloys. Castings of the same compositions heat treated in the same manner give inferior physical properties, particularly as to ductility. The statements made subsequently concerning properties and heat treatment apply to material that has received sufficient working to thoroughly break down the cast structure. The material referred to has, in general, undergone a reduction in section of at least 80 per cent, by mechanical working. It may be mentioned in passing that other compositions have been found that are suitable for the production of the maximum physical properties in heat-treated castings.

There are seven basic comminution circuits that can be used to prepare beneficiation feed from the product of a primary crusher. This paper gives a comparison of these circuits based on average process and economical data. The paper is principally devoted to a discussion of the test work required to obtain the process data needed to evaluate each circuit. The results of the test work in conjunction with geographic and economic factors can be used to narrow down the choice of possible circuits to one, two, or three before making a detailed engineering study.

Although a number of articles appeared during the war advocating the use of cadmium in lead-tin solders, very little information of value can be found in the literature regarding the properties of solders containing cadmium. In most of the published articles the cadmium seems to have been considered merely as a partial substitute for tin in a tin-lead alloy rather than as an essential constituent of a ternary alloy. The primary object of the substitution of cadmium for tin was to lessen the amount of tin required, at a time when the latter was scarce and high-priced, and thus to produce a cheaper solder. While this object was accomplished, the new properties resulting from a change from a binary lead-tin alloy to a ternary lead-tin-cadmium alloy were not given proper consideration in many cases. For the past few years, the American Smelting & Refining Co. has been marketing a very considerable amount of cadmium in the form of lead-tin-cadmium alloys for use as solders for certain special purposes, and the successful use of these solders suggested that if more extensive knowledge were available concerning the properties of lead-tin-cadmium alloys of various compositions their field of usefulness might be materially extended. The investigation described in the present paper was undertaken to obtain this information and, by means of tests under conditions approaching those of practical use, to determine the suitability of cadmium solders for various purposes. Characteristics and Requirements of Solders in General General Physical Properties.—When cast into bars, solder should present a smooth and bright appearance free from oxide inclusions and bubbles. Ductility should be as great as possible without sacrificing tensile strength, and vice versa. Hardness and specific gravity are not of any great importance. Melting Characteristics.—The melting or solidification range is important. This statement applies both to the extent of the range and to the actual temperature at which complete solidification occurs. A rather narrow solidification range is desirable in soft solders in order that solidification may take place quickly. Sodium carbonate (soda ash) is one of two principal commercial alkalis. Its principal competitor is sodium hydroxide. The use of sodium carbonate is recorded in ancient Egypt, where naturally occurring brines and solid salts provided impure soda for early glassmaking. Until the 19th century, soda ash (as well as potash) was recovered mainly by leaching wood or other plant ashes. In 18th-century Europe, for example, leaching seaweed ash with hot water produced a brown laundry lye. One of the better grades of this material was a Spanish product, barilla, which analyzed 24 to 30% Na2CO3 (Hou, 1942). The modern chemical industry was born in 1691 with the LeBlanc process for making sodium carbonate from salt, sulfuric acid, and lime. English industry used this process extensively in the 17th and 18th centuries. The next major advance was in 1863, when Ernst Solvay devised the ammonia-soda, or Solvay process. The first of many Solvay plants was built in 1874. These supplanted the LeBlanc method and dominated worldwide soda ash production until 1974, when mined sodium carbonate became predominant. Although considerably less important until recently, natural sodium carbonate deposits historically have supported small soda ash operations throughout the world. Shortages during World War II stimulated production of "natural" soda ash from such deposits, particularly at Searles Lake, CA and Lake Magadi, Kenya. More spectacularly, increased production from the vast trona deposits in Wyoming has virtually supplanted the Solvay process in the US. Principal producers of natural soda ash as well as the character of the source deposits are listed in Table 1. [ ]
