BEFORE the world-wide depression, the primary purpose of most blast-furnace operators was to produce a maximum tonnage of pig iron per day for each furnace in blast. Some attention was paid to the conservation of labor and raw materials, but the idea was well established that low-cost pig iron was attainable only when each furnace was producing a high tonnage. After the depression had set in, the picture changed considerably. Each blast-furnace operator was forced to run his plant in a manner that best fitted the economical set-up of his company. A great deal of thought was expended on the different methods of operation, always with the idea of making each product in a way that would best serve his company financially. Because of this abnormal condition, the blast-furnace man was compelled to indulge in various practices of which many had been believed to be next to impossible up to that time. The ultimate purpose of these innovations was either one or a combination of the following: 1. To produce only enough pig iron for immediate consumption at a minimum cost. 2. To produce gas for boiler or mill use to supplant some higher priced fuel. 3: To consume the coke produced at the coke plant, which was often viewed as a byproduct. 4. To protect the cash position of the company. These conditions were met by diverse methods, some of which were: 1. Slow or decreased wind. In some instances the blast blown was held as low as 25 per cent of the normal volume. 2. Intermittent operation, in which the furnaces were shut down or "fanned" at frequent intervals.

THE metallurgist is familiar with the rapid development of concentration -by flotation and smelting in the reverberatory in recent years, brought 'about chiefly by the exhaustion of' bodies of .rich, coarse, direct smelting ore. Geologically speaking, in many porphyry-copper districts, the richer contact or replace let deposits surrounding 'the main ore-forming igneous intrusion have been exhausted, and it is necessary to beneficiate the copper minerals disseminated throughout the mass of the intrusion itself. The organization of great companies to treat such low- grade ores on a large scale and the practices resulting from the necessity for an economic method of treatment 'are among the most prominent metallurgical developments of the past decade. It is interesting to note the effect of the present trend of practice on the inter-relationship of the concentrator and smelter, on the constituents of the smelter charge, and on smelting in general.

As part of its overall goal to maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, investigated the feasibility of producing subsieve-size material by an attrition grinding method. The Bureau-patented technique employed intense agitation of a mixture of the material to be ground, a granular grinding media, and a suspending fluid. A variety of materials were successfully ground to extremely fine particle sizes. Studies were made to determine the method's efficiency in grinding industrial minerals and metals to minus 2 micrometers and ceramic powders to an average particle size of 500 angstroms. Transfer of this technology to a commercial scale has been achieved. Commercial-scale units are currently being used in the paper-coating clay and titania pigment industries.

One of the well-known and important uses of the noble or precious metals has been for electrical contacts. In fact, the elements of this group, comprising gold, silver and the six platinum metals, have been called "noble" because of their ability to resist heat and corrosion, properties which were early found to be of importance in good contacts. Of these, platinum and its iridium alloys, palladium, and silver, have been extensively used. In recent years the electrical industry has been responsible for about one-eighth of the total consiimption of the platinum metals in the United States. Information is not available as to what part of this one-eighth has been used for contacts but it is certainly an important one. Substitutes for Platinum During the past 20 years a considerable number of contact alloys have been proposed in the patent literature largely with the aim of more or less replacing platinum by gold or silver, and some of these alloys are finding increasingly widespread application as the reliability of their performance becomes established. From even the partial data at hand it appears that this substitution by the less precious metals has replaced at least one-half of the amount of platinum that the entire electrical industry would otherwise be consuming at the present time. While the subject is of considerable interest to the metallurgist it is even more so to the electrical engineer and it is surprising that the literature records no systematic and comprehensive investigation along these lines. Practically all the scattered work on noble metal contacts has centered around platinum as a standard and has had two more or less distinct aims. One of these has been the replacement of platinum by cheaper matcrials, and the other, the dcveloprnent of materials of superior electrical performance. The merit of a contact metal has been assumed to be dependent on its infusibility, and since thc more precious metals have the higher melting points there has naturally been an association of the two qualities in the sense that the more precious were

THE Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company is the largest copper producer in the Philippines, and the only one that makes a concentrate valuable principally for its copper; also, it has the only productive copper mine situated at considerable distance from the sea, and is the only one in the islands operating its own smelter. The Lepanto mine is in the Municipal District of Mankayan, sub-province of Benguet, near the heart of the Mountain Province of Northern Luzon. It is 165 km. from its shipping point at San Fernando, Province of La Union, on the shore of the China Sea. Elevations at the property range from 3200 to 4500 ft. The climate is very mild; temperatures are seldom below 50° or above 80°F. Annual rainfall approaches 170 in. and is mainly confined to a rainy season lasting from May to October. The months from December to April, inclusive, are usually extremely dry. This climatic pecularity entails the problems of landslides on the roads during the rainy season and water shortage during the dry season. The Mountain Trail, an improved rock-surfaced toll road maintained by the Commonwealth Government, gives access to the property. The 105 km. over this road may be traveled in about 4 ½ hr. during the dry season. Very few sections of the road are straight for more than 100 meters, and about one third of it is a one-way road controlled by gates. All freight for the property is delivered by the Manila Railroad Company to Bauang, La Union, 45 km. west of Baguio and at sea level, where it is picked up by freight trucks and hauled via Baguio to Lepanto. Granulated matte is hauled in bulk from Lepanto in four-ton lots on freight trucks to the storage bins at San Fernando. Freight rates from Bauang to the property amount to P8.00 per ton, and from the property to San Fernando the rate is P16.00 per ton. The company pays the road toll, P1.00 per truck, each way. THE CAMP The company maintains a modern camp, well separated from the mine and reduction plant. Comfortable and sanitary living quarters, water, and light, as well as free medical service are provided all employees. A hospital staffed by a doctor and two nurses takes care of all medical treatment. Considering recreational facilities of great importance, the company has provided two tennis courts, two basketball courts, and badminton courts for employees. Bowling alleys and a motion picture theater are operated by the company, the profits being expended for other recreational purposes. A moderate sized recreation hall serves for barrio dances, meetings,

Five sulfide minerals from the Magmont mine, southeast Missouri were sampled for 31 trace elements in over 300 samples by laser microprobe spectrographic analysis of polished sections. The concentration of several trace elements shows a pattern of progressive variation with depth (space) and variation with different paragenetic stages (time) of each mineral. Factor analysis of the geochemical data shows sympathetic correlation both in space and in time of Bi, Cd, Ge, and Sn in galena and sphalerite, and Ni and Co in sphalerite and marcasite.

Significant resources grading less than about 1% nickel occur in magmatic sulfide deposits of two types. In the Mt. Keith type, extensive zones of disseminated nickel sulfides occur in the central portions of certain synvolcanic dunite-peridotite sills of komatiitic affinity in Archean greenstone terranes. In the Duluth type, disseminated copper-nickel sulfides occur near the basal margins of intrusions of flood basaltic affinity associated with intracontinental rifring. In both types, the parent magmas became saturated with sulfide following the onset of fractional crystallization and the separation of the immiscible sulfide melt was accompanied by the precipitation of a relatively large proportion of silicates. The abundant silicate crystals impeded the coalescense and accumulation of the sulfide droplets with the resulting formation of large but low grade deposits.

Copper concentrate smelting has been the subject of significant improvements during the last three decades. Several new processes are being successfully applied at industrial scale, and probably no new copper smelter will be built with the old-fashioned reverberatory furnace. However, because of financial reasons, the existing reverberatory furnaces, which smelt a significant part of the copper produced worldwide, are likely to last at least another decade. Some improvements have been introduced in reverberatory smelting practice, the best known being the use of oxyfuel burners. However, efforts to optimize the reverberatory furnace operation through automatic control have not been reported. The complex and semi-continuous nature of the process makes it dificult to find a suitable strategy for its automatic control. Many factors, like fuel economy, productivity, boiler capacity, refractory wear, converter slag return, copper losses in discard slag, etc. are interconnected. The chosen control strategy should take into account all these factors to achieve good economic results. A detailed discussion of these problems is presented.

When an excavation is made underground the original rock stresses are removed from the surfaces of the excavation. These surfaces converge to partially close the excavation and the superincumbent rock mass moves down towards the excavation. If the convergence of the surfaces of the excavation were controlled, energy generated by their motion against the controlling forces could be extracted. Since the total forces in the rock mass are not significantly affected by the excavation, stress concentrations arise around the excavation, which compensate exactly for those stresses no longer transmitted through the excavation. These phenomena give rise to two general principles which provide the basis for analyzing the effects of making any underground excavation. The first of these is that the total force resulting from the stresses across any plane in the rock, including any plane through the excavation, must be the same before and after the excavation is made. The second of these is that energy must necessarily be released as a result of making an underground excavation. It is instructive to consider the implications of these two principles for two extreme cases of material behavior between which the actual behavior of rock must lie, namely, the behavior of a fluid and the behavior of an elastic solid. For the purpose of analysis in this paper, an underground excavation is defined as an excavation in which the smaller horizontal dimension of any open void at a particular horizon is less than the depth of that horizon below surface. In the case of a fluid, any unsupported excavation would fill immediately, as a fluid cannot sustain shear stresses. For the same reason, stress concentrations could not arise and the forces across any plane would necessarily be the same before and after excavation. A new electrical logging method. called MicroLaterology is described. whereby the resistivity R of the invaded zone close to the wall of the bore hole is measured. This method essentially utilizes a system of concentric circular electrodes iml,edded in an insulating support which is applied to the wall of the hole. A beam of current of very small diameter is focused horizontally into the formations by means of an automatic control device. and then opens widely at short distance from the wall. with this method, R most often can be recorded directly. except when the mud cake is very thick. in which case a correction is easily provided. The basic role of factor R in the quantitative analysis of electrical logs in terms of fluid saturation and of porosity is explained. The paper is illustrated with field examples. INTRODUCTION In electrical logging. the resistivity of that part of the penneable and porous formations which is invaded by mud filtrate is an important factor in the interpretation. Measurements made with the conventional devices — normal. lateral — and also with improved systems as the Laterolog and induction logging' — are very often more or less affected by the presence of the invaded zone. and the knowledge of the resistivity of this zone is useful in the evaluation of the true resistivity of the beds. which itself is a basic element for the determination of fluid saturation. Moreover. the comparison of the resistivity of the invaded zone with the resistivity of the mud filtrate gives valuable indications on the magnitude of the formation resistivity factor — which in turn is necessary for the quantitative interpretation of the logs. both in terms of fluid saturation and of porosity. On the other hand. it is generally admitted that the invaded zone is not a homogeneous medium separated from the uncon-tamirlated part of the bed hy a well defined cylindrical boundary. but that the fluid distribution—filtrate. connate water. hydrocarbon — and hence. the resistivity. in the invaded zone varies progressively with the distance from the wall of the hole. The term "resistivity of the invaded zone" therefore corre-sponds to an average value which is a function of the distribution of the fluids Inasmuch as the law of this distribution is not exactly known, the resistivity of the invaded zone is not a well defined factor. A much better definition is obtained if the medium under consideration is limited to that part of the formation which is within a short distance from the wall of the hole. It seems likely a within a distance of at least two or three in., most of the fluids in in the pores of tile formation have been displaced by the mud filtrate. The connate water has almost certainly been flushed out. and the oil. if any has generally been reduced to a comparatively small amount. The resistivity witliir~ the radial limit of two to three in. is. therefore. prac.tically constant at an). given level: its value. at least when the proportion of conductive solids in the formation is negligible. is chiefly dependent on the resistivity of the filtrate and on the porosity of the formation, and is affected only to a relatively small degree by the presence of the small amount of residual oil. This part of the formation close to the wall of the hole will he designated in the following as the "flushed zone." a-distinguished from the more general term of "invaded zone'. which relates to the part of the formation extending from the wall out to the distance where the formation is completely uncontaminated. The symbol R,, will he used for the resistivity of the flushed zone. (The notation R is related to the radial distance from the hole. If x designates this distance. xo is the initial value of x, i.e., the value corresponding to the region very close to the wall.) The determination of R is difficult, if not impossible. from logs made with the conventional devices. The long normal and the long lateral are. of course. not suited for this purpose because their radii of investigation are by far too large. The short normal. and the limestone sonde—-after correction for the effect of the hole hole — give resistivity values which corre. spond to materials situated within a comparatively short distance from the hole, but this distance is still several time. as great as the thickness of tire flushed zone. The only value which can be obtained with these devices corresponds to an average resistivity of the invaded zone- — and this only provided the invasion is deep enough, since otherwise the meas "red values would also be affected by the uncontaminated region beyond the invaded zone. It should nevertheless be recalled that despite these limitations. the measurements given by the short normal and or the limestone sonde are always very useful for qualitative interpretation. and also in favorable cases for the qantitative analysis of the logs in terms of saturation and porosity. The MicroLog. which was primarily developed for the detection of permeable beds and for an accurate determination of their boundaries. provides a good approach towards the evaluation of R. THE present paper records a chapter in the history of the development of an electrolytic manganese industry in the United States.1 A relatively large pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev., for the production of electrolytic manganese was conceived as part of the national defense program to make this country independent of foreign importation of manganese ore. The first authorization, in November 1940, however, was for a plant of only several hundred pounds capacity. Improvements in process and subsequent additions to some sections authorized by subsequent appropriations have enabled the plant to produce as much as 2000 lb. of manganese a day for substantial periods of time. Since in pilot-plant operation frequent changes are made in the flowsheet, the electrolytic manganese plant was constructed so that equipment could be rearranged with a minimum of expense and time. Several different kinds of the various types of equipment were installed for many of the operations, so that the one most suitable for the process might be chosen. Pilot-plant operations were begun in November 1941 and have been continuous except for brief shutdowns for installation of new equipment. More than one-half million pounds of manganese have been produced. The improvements in process, selection of equipment, and operational procedure developed are recorded here. DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROCESS The work of early investigators on the electrolysis of manganese solutions has been reviewed by Shelton.2 Until the method of continuous production of manganese by electrolysis was perfected by Shelton2-4 and coworkers, no practical procedure had been devised. The method as originally developed by the Bureau of Mines will be described here only briefly. The manganese dioxide ore was reduced in a rotating kiln-type furnace at 650°C. in an atmosphere of "city" gas. The calcine was leached with spent electrolyte and enough sulphuric acid to produce a neutral leach solution containing 25 grams manganese per liter as manganese sulphate and 200 grams per liter of ammonium sulphate. Arsenic was removed from the solution by the addition of 0.05 gram iron per liter as ferrous sulphate followed by oxidation

Several years ago the writer was connected with the Mint and Assay Service of the Federal Government as Assistant Assayer at the Salt Lake Assay Office. At that time cyanide bars formed approximately half of the bullion purchased by that office. Disagreement in valuat,ion between the producer and the office was not infrequent and to a lesser extent between the Assay Office and the Mint, this latter issue being soon obviated, however, by adopting uniform methods of sampling the bars. A nice problem seemed to offer itself for research and the writer began a series of experiments which were soon terminated, however, by his going into other work, and which he regrets have not since been completed. The results attained may suggest lines of approach to this problem and are, therefore, offered in this article. Frederic P. Dewey, Assayer of the Mint Scrvice, U. 5. Treasury, has had abundant opportunity to study this phase of metallurgy, and has published several articles relative thereto.1 In the last article cited Dewey quotes analyses of cyanide bullion similar in content to that with which the writer worked, and which show some of the variations met with. In the discussion of these papers,2 comparison has been made in terms of copper bullion, but to the writer this seems of questionable value. Copper bullion may resemble silver bullion, but its similarity to gold bullion with little or no silver content is another thing. The freezing-point diagram of Roozeboom, reproduced on page 881 of the discussion cited, is for the gold-silver series as stated. The solubilities of the transition metals from scundium to nickel, inclusive, in liquid cadmium were determined by sampling saturated solutions. At 400°C these solubilities (ppm) are:Sc, Co, 22; Ni, 12000. Relative partial molal enthalpies and excess partial molal entropies at infinite dilution for the solutes Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co are compared zoitlz similar data for the post-transition metals. Three new intermetallic phases, ScCd,, TiCd, and Ti,Cd, encozaztered in the course of this work, are reported. Measurements of the solubility of the 3-d transition metals in liquid cadmium have been reported' only for iron. The present measurements for the entire series were made as an aid to the study of the systematics of alloy formation. EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus and sampling techniques used for the solubility determinations were similar to those described by Martin etal.' Temperatures were measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple sheathed in recrystallized alumina and immersed in the solution. The thermocouple was recalibrated periodically during the course of the investigation. Thermocouple voltages were measured to the neares 0.01 mv with a Rubicon model 2732 potentiometer. A scaled-down version of the apparratus, in which the total metal charge was about 90 g, was employed to measure the solubility of scandium. Two-mm ID Vycor filter pipets were used to sample the scandium-cadmiurn solutions; the samples weighed about 2g- Cadmium with a minimum purity of 99.95 pct was used; the only impurities detected spectrochem-ically were C'u and Mg, both less than 10 ppm. The purities of the other metals were: scandium, 99.9 pct; titanium. 99.92 pct; vanadium, 99.9 pct; chromium, 99).99 pct; manganese, 99.9+ pct; iron, 99.90 pct; cobalt, 99.95 pct; and nickel, 99.96 pct. Solidified melts were routinely analyzed spectro-graphically. No significant contamination by the crucible, sampling pipets, or other materials of construction was observed. The entire specimen obtained by sampling was dissolved to preclude analytical errors due to segregation on cooling. Colorimetric methods3 were used for the analyses of cobalt (2-nitroso-l-naphthol), manganese (permanganate), nickel (dimethylglyoxime), titanium (peroxide), and vanadium (thiocyanate).4 Chromium, iron, and scandium were neutron-irradiated to produce The dissolved samples were gamma-counted to determine solute concentration.For the separation of intermediate phases from cadmium-rich alloys selective leaching by saturated ammonium nitrate solutions was employed. The concentration of cadmium in the successive leaches was followed polarographically and the process was terminated when the rate of cadmium dissolution decreased markedly. For the further investigation of intermediate phases 1/4- in. diam powder compacts were pressed at 80,000 psi and annealed in argon at 315" to 330°C for 10 days. Larger quantities of alloys were prepared in sealed tantalum capsules heated in a rocking furnace.

Only recently has it been realized that preferred orientations are common in hot-rolled steels. In a recent paper, N. P. Gossl stated that hot-rolled mild steel exhibits a texture different from that characteristic of cold-rolled steel. No complete study of these hot-rolling textures has been reported using the pole-figure method of Wever. The material used in the work reported in this paper was the same material used by Gensamer and Mehl2 in a recent study of preferred orientations in cold-rolled steel, to which reference may be made for the composition and thermal history of the steel. Automobile-body sheet bar 1/4 in. thick was hot-rolled at two temperatures, 780' and 910' C. (1436' and 1669' F.). These temperatures refer to the temperature of the furnace in which the steel was heated; after each pass the steel was returned to the furnace and held there long enough to return to temperature. Although no accurate method was used to measure the temperature after each pass, it was estimated by color that only a slight drop in temperature occurred. In order to determine the effect of any preferred orientation that might have persisted through the normalizing treatment, one specimen at each temperature was rolled in the same direction as the original working direction and the other at right angles to it. The total reduction in each case was 85 per cent, the specimens having been reduced from 0.250 to 0.0375 in. in five passes. Final cooling was in air. Pinhole reflection photograms were taken of all four specimens, with the rolling direction vertical and the X-ray beam at an angle of 7' with the transverse direction (the transverse direction is defined as that direction in the rolling plane perpendicular to the rolling direction). These photograms, taken with a Mo target at 35 kv., are reproduced in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4. They show that a more pronounced texture was developed by the low-temperature rolling (780' C.), and that of the two

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE history of the several petroleum deposits of Texas and Mexico, or of the sediments in which they now occur, if the deposits are not indigenous to such sediments, is known in a general way only, but it nevertheless casts strong light on the conditions surrounding them and is of great importance in the search for and exploitation of then. The petroleum deposits of Texas are separable into two main divisions: 1. The deposits of northwestern Texas, which are directly connected with the Oklahoma fields to the north, and have no representatives at all in the Mexican area. 2. The deposits of the coastal area, which extend into Louisiana on the east and connect with those of the Mexican coast to the south. Early in the Pennsylvanian period a series of bituminous shales and limestones were laid crown over a broad area in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. These are known as the Bend series in Texas, the Caney shales in Oklahoma, and the Fayetteville beds in Arkansas. Following their deposition an uplift occurred, forming the Lampasas geanticlinal, which runs northeastward from the old Paleozoic land area of the Llano region toward Red River. The Bend series is petroliferous in places and has furnished a few producing wells on each side of the Lampasas uplift. This uplift forms the barrier and. dividing line between the two divisions of the Texas petroleum deposits. To the west of it, in waters which were the southern extension of the interior continental seas, in connection with the sediments and coal beds of the Pennsylvanian and Permian, great quantities of petroleum were deposited either as oil or as "potential petroleum." These sediments have been subject to very slight disturbance, and only very gentle folds. are found, with no signs of volcanic action in any part of the area. The conditions, therefore, indicate that the greater part, if not all, of the oil in this area is indigenous to the beds in which it is found.

IT was stated in a former paper1 that an intensive study of anthracite costs was being made by the engineers of the United States Fuel Administration. The results of this-study are now available and are offered as a supplement to the former paper. Anthracite costs as reported, for the 6-months period, December, 1917, to May, 1918, inclusive, as compiled by the Federal Trade Commission, were used as a base, and charts similar to those described in the-former paper were made for the standard white ash anthracite and for red ash and Lykens valley coals. ADJUSTMENTS The adjustments of cost from a reported to a price-fixing basis, as described for the bituminous methods, were applied but showed only minor adjustments as necessary. The great spread in anthracite prices on the varying sizes, which for the 6-mo. period under review ranged in average from $5.244 for nut to $2.074 for barley coal, makes the question of the percentage of sizes produced at the different collieries a vital one. The realization with the same prices for each size must be within very wide limits, when it is considered that the percentage of prepared coal reported from different collieries varied from over 80 per cent. to below 30 per. cent. for fresh-mined coal. Hence, as the spread in prices for the various sizes must be predicated on some percentage, it is essential to find some method of adjustment to allow for this variation. The logical method of adjustment is to calculate actual costs to costs as of the standard percentage of sizes, so that the margin between the adjusted costs and the average realization shall be the actual margin for each colliery between its actual costs and actual realization clue to its particular percentage of sizes. As a base for realization the actual percentage of sizes for fresh-mined coal for the 6-mo. period was adopted. This percentage is given in Table 1.

The practice of introducing acid into oil wells to increase production of oil and gas has been in use since 1894, when it was first used in the Pennsylvania oil fields30.‡ It is only since 1928 that it has been used to any extent in the Mid-Continent18. The process has proved successful in increasing production, at least temporarily, in depleted oil fields where the producing formation is highly calcareous and where water drive is not too pronounced. In the Zwolle field in Louisiana, where the producing horizon is a chalk, increases of 100 per cent have been recorded25. In north-central Texas, where the oil is produced from the Marble Falls limestone, equally pronounced increases have resulted3. The production also in some fields yielding oil from quartz sand cemented with calcitc has been benefited. The evidence of actual increase in total recovery of oil, however, has been questioned by some engineers18. It has been pointed out that the results of the treatment of a well in a now district, where the process has never been tried out, can never be predicted with certainty, since other factors besides percentage of calcareous content of the oil sand play a large part in determining the success of the method. Numerous articles have been published on acid treatment and on the effects of acid on limestone1-35, yet very little has been written concerning experimental work on the actual effect of acid on capillary pores and larger oil-coated voids of oil sands. This is due partly to difficulties in duplicating field conditions in a laboratory and partly to the fact that the process has been carried out largely by contracting companies that have been unwilling to publish details of their results for fear of loss of business to competitors. The authors, using equipment developed to measure the radial permeability of oil-sand cores2', have developed a method of investigating the results of acid treatment which has enabled them to test numerous cores and to study in some detail the action of acid on the different types of rocks, particularly fine-grained rocks.
