The roof truss as a means of secondary or supplemental mine roof support has enjoyed increasing acceptance in recent years, particularly in bituminous coal mines. In those entries where long life is required or doubtful performance from other forms of support seems likely, trusses in many cases have provided the necessary protection for continuing operations. Although relatively expensive and time-consuming in their installation, trusses, particularly with the new resin point anchor system, appear to be justifying their higher premium. It seems inevitable that techniques and equipment for installing them within the cycle will soon be developed. The actual mechanism by which trusses contribute to the stability of a roof is, as yet, poorly understood, and it may be that more than a single mechanism is involved. There are, however, a number of useful observations which can be made concerning the structural behavior of the truss itself, based solely on the mechanics of rigid and deformable bodies. The purpose of this article is to present some of these observations, particularly relating to friction in the system. A few speculations concerning the roof must, of course, be made. From a knowledge of the structural behavior, some insight into the truss-roof interaction may be gained. The concept of the truss is quite simple. As shown in [Fig. 1], it consists of two inclined chords (usually at 45') anchored in holes drilled in the roof over the ribs. A horizontal chord is formed connecting the exposed ends of the inclined chords, either with a third piece or by bending extensions of the inclined chords until they meet in the middle. A distinction can be made between active and passive chords of a truss depending upon the manner of installation. If the inclined chords are fully grouted and the horizontal chord is merely attached to them, it may reasonably be assumed that no significant forces exist in the truss until the roof begins to work. Such would be a completely passive system. On the other hand, if the inclined chords are anchored only at their upper extremities and the horizontal chord is formed in such a way that all three chords can be pretensioned to a significant portion of their tensile strengths then the truss may be regarded as fully active. Combinations of active and passive chords are also possible. * The discussion here is confined to the fully active truss such as the Birmingham steel rod system or the Galis wire rope truss. Rock may undergo great changes in physical properties when heated to high temperatures and then cooled, The temperature and intensity of reactions causing rock alterntiorl.s can he controlled by introducing certain chemicals during heat treament. Three typical outcrop sandsone samples were saturuted with common salt solutions, then heated to several maximum temperatures. After cooling, it was found that per-rrreuhilities had increased much more for salt-saturated samples than for samples not saturated with salt but heated to the same temperatures. This was only true, however. for samples heated above the melting points of the particrrlar salts. Potassium chloritle was particularly effective with Bandera sandstone. Samples saturated with potassium chlorirlr. solution and heated to 900C showed an 11-fold increa.se in perrrieahility. Samples without potasrirdrn chloritle but heated to the .same temperature. showed only a 2.7-jold incresre in permecahility. In application, it seems possible that injecting chemicalc into the formations from a wellbore followed by applying intensive borehole heating might promote reactions which would greatly improve permeability of the formalions. INTRODUCTION Great changes in the physical properties of rocks which have been heated to temperatures in the range of 600 to 800C have been reported earlier. Permeability increases of 50 per cent, and equivalent decreases in sonic velocity and breaking strength have been observed. Although there might be some suppression of certain reactions responsiblc for these changes when rock samples are heated under simulated reservoir pressure conditions. recent work has shown that these are more than offset by the increased importance of other reactions at high pressures. The reactions considered responsible for alteration of rock properties by heating include differential thermal expansion. dehydration, phase changes and dissociation of mineral constituents. Ceramists have long known that temperatures at which reactions occur can be raised or lowered by the presence of certain impurities in the sys. tcnl. Thus the possibility exists that by saturating rocks with appropriate solutions. desired reactions might be accelerated and unwanted reactions might be suppressec! when the rock is heated. Purpose of the present work was to investigate the effects of several common salts on the thermal alteration of sandstones. Types of reactions which might occur are reviewed and the findings of a number of thernlochemical alteration tests are presented. THEKMOCHEMICAL ALTERATION OF SANDSTONE MINERALS The most abundant constituent of most sandstones is quartz. Quartz can exist in at least eight different forms, but in the temperature range of immediate interest (to 900C) only two forms are of importance—alpha quartz below 573C and beta quartz above this temperature. Although the alpha-beta inversion of quartz is very important in thermal alteration of rocks. it is not particularly important here because the inversion temperature cannot be changed significantly by the presence of impurities or by the application of pressure. The transition temperature of quartz to tridynlite is 867C. but the transition is very sluggish. Tridymite is considered to be a metastable transition phase between two stable phases: quartz?cristobalite. However. the transition temperature for tridymite to cristobalite is 1,470C.4 The quartz-tridymite-cristobalite transition can be accelerated substantially by the presence of fluxing agents. Finely divided calcium, magnesium and titanium oxides accelerate the conversion while A12O may retard it. A Mixture of NaCl and CsCl reduces the temperature for cristobalite formation by as much as 420°C. Feldspars constitute the second most important mineral in sandstones. The melting points of feldspars range between 1,000 and 1,700°C depending upon the variety. No information available indicated any important role of fluxing agents in the thermal alteration of this group of minerals. Carbonate minerals are subject to dissociation at temperatures within the range of the present investigation. The dissociation of magnesite can start at a temperature of 373°C, but the reaction is sluggish and might not occur untll a temperature of 500°C or ,higher is reached. Dolomite dissociates in two stages at 500°C and 890°C, whereas calcite dissociation temperature is about 885C. Because CO2 is released in the dissociation of carbonates, ail such reactions are somewhat dependent upon CO2 partial pressure. In the absence of CO: in the surrounding atmosphere, the dissociation of calcite starts at 500°C.However. when 1 atm of CO surrounds the sample, the dissociation does not start until 900C. The other carbonates are apparently much less sensitive to a change in partial pressure of CO2. The aragonite calcite transformation can occur an!. where within the temperature range of 357 to 488°C. depending upon the presence of impurities such as barium. strontium. lead and perhaps zinc. The differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves of both magnesitc and dolomite vary with the presence of 'impuritics. The presence of iron in particular seems to affect the magnesitc DTA curve

"There is nothing new under the sun." All over the world, mineral-dressing engineers are working at their problems, no two of which are alike. Each encounters equipment and process problems. Many devise simple ways and means of overcoming their difficulties. Many of these problems are quite common in the industry, yet, since no one human being seems capable of thinking of everything, these problems at some plants often are looked upon as necessary evils. The purpose of this symposium is to gather together, from competent engineers, devices and practices that have been useful to them. Most of the ideas contributed are not new, yet there is no plant operator, old timer or youngster, who will not find some idea herein that will give him a suggestion for improving his operation. Space does not permit a complete elaboration on all of the contributions offered. Each item is summarized, but this will be ample for those skilled in the art of mineral dressing. A list of contributors appears at the end of the paper, and the superior number at the end of each item identifies its source. General Equipment A signal light to show that a steel bin, containing relatively line, moist ore, is full, can be made by suspending a copper rod in the bin to a sufficient depth to ensure ample contact with the ore. One wire of a 32-volt circuit should be attached to the rod and one to the side of the bin. Sufficient current will flow to make the signal light burn. A 110-volt circuit could be used, but 32 volts ensures safety.10 Fig I shows a circular bin for crushed ore. It is a concrete structure footed on the ground, using no supporting columns. Tailing from the sink-float was used for aggregate. Cross conveyors for discharging ore are not required, nor is a tripper for filling. Segregation is minimized by drawing from different gates. An exhaust fan on top of the bin eliminates condensation due to temperature of the ore.21 A beam with an adjustable point of suspension near the center permits rigging rolls for removal in a very few minutes. This makes unnecessary the lacing of the cable through the hub bolts on one side, around the shaft on the other, and the trouble of balancing the load.8 The ratchet handle on a Symons crusher may be replaced by a drum with a cable wound on it. When the cable is pulled by a crane or hoist it causes the drum to revolve and thus screws or unscrews the bowl. This reduces handwork and materially shortens the time required for the job.' Southwestern Utah is well known for its scenic attractions. The beauties of Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon and the Grand Canyon are of world renown. Thusly, Cedar City is known, at least by the local Chamber of Commerce, as the Gateway to the Utah Parks. However, of the thousands of tourists flocking to Utah's many points of interest by way of Cedar City, few realize that any mining takes place in the vicinity, in spite of the fact that iron mines have been in continuous operation for 40 years. The Pinto-Iron Springs Mining District is only 15 miles west of Cedar City, and is the largest iron ore producing district in the West. In recent years, the shipments have ranged from 2% to 4 million tons per year making Utah the fifth-ranking state in iron ore production.

CERTAIN American operators believe that desulphurizing in the ladle offers a means of increasing blast-furnace and open-hearth yields with the possibility of improvements in quality of the steel. In fact, several producers have experimented with practically all of the known desulphurizing agents, including both standard grades of the alkalies and special preparations that have been offered from time to time during the past several years. Some of these are regularly being used today in large-scale commercial operations, with good results. Also, it is the practice to treat off-sulphur casts in the blast-furnace ladle at a number of plants. It is not known, however, that anyone in the steel industry (American) has ever adequately equipped a plant for desulphurizing blast-furnace metal in an efficient manner as regular operating practice. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the importance of correct equipment and proper handling for obtaining uniform and efficient results. As will be shown, at the temperature of molten iron the alkalies are instantly neutralized by any free slag present, dissipating their desulphurizing value. Entrained silicates are rapidly washed out of the metal bath by the highly basic soda slags and will be satisfied ahead of desulphurizing reactions with FeS. More or less of the reagent will always be used up through reactions with the refractory lining. Desulphurization will be limited to the action of the free alkali then remaining in the slag. Causes for the erratic results generally found with desulphurizing tests in blast-furnace transfer ladles would include, among other things, variations in the quantity of furnace slag coming down with the metal, and differences in the percentage of kish and entrained silicates in the different casts. As the alkalies instantly unite with any free slags or silicates present, these, with any kish coming off, both dilute the reagent and reduce the surface contact between the slag and metal, thereby retarding the desulphurizing reactions.

The stress-strain behavior of the gold single crystals in easy glide was found to be affected by the specimen dimension which is parallel to the projection of the Burgers vector of the primary-slip system. The larger this dimension is, the larger is the slope of easy glide. Previously severa1 investigators attributed the size effects to either the existence of surface films or the grip constraints. However, in this experiment both of these possible causes were not present. It is proposed that the length of slip path (defined as the crystal dimension parallel to the Burgers vector of the primary system) is the controlling factor in the size effect observed in gold. ENGINEERS have long recognized the desirability of correlating the data obtained from small-scale slime-settling tests with commercial work as carried on in large tanks. This need, though most apparent in designing new installations, frequently arises also in existent plants, since a large range of experimental work can be performed without interfering with regular operation. GENERAL SETTLING PHENOMENA In order to develop rational methods of laboratory testing, it becomes necessary to study the general phenomena of settling. Since it was desired to give the public the benefit of these methods at as early a date as possible, together with the knowledge of the general principles of slime settling necessary for a clear understanding of the laboratory tests, we have ventured to discuss the subject in so far as brought out by the work which we now have under way. We realize that certain of our preliminary conclusions may be subject to modification, but it seems probable that, with but few exceptions, the general laws enunciated will cover the settling behavior of all pulps encountered in metallurgical plants. However, it must be recognized that there is still a vast amount of work to be done upon certain phases of the subject; therefore, at this time we will attempt only a discussion of the behavior of ore pulps during the process of settling or dewatering, under certain given conditions. The failure, or disintegration, of concrete in structures, even when the cement, sand, and coarse aggregate used have passed satisfactorily all tests and inspections, is not uncommon. Such failures occur even when proper methods of mixing and placing have been used and where weather conditions were correct. In these cases, the origin of the trouble must be sought in the cement; therefore some additional mode of determining the quality of cement must be employed. The problem is to find a simple, usable, easily applied method that will supplement the standard tests. The solution of this problem involves a knowledge of the chemical composition of Portland cements, also of their constitution (or componental composition), as the behavior of a cement, when gaged, is dependent on the physical and chemical characters of the compounds of which it is composed, the proportions existing between them, and the fineness of grinding. It is likewise essential to know the character, behavior, and composition of the hydration products of Portland cement. The most promising method of attack makes use of chemical, mechanical, and petrographic methods. Chemical, by determining quantitatively not only the usual constituents, but the carbon dioxide and water. Mechanical, by determining the fineness with the air analyzer,' which separates into fractions of various grain dimensions all of that portion which in the ordinary sieve test passes the 200-mesh sieve and constitutes at least 75 per cent. of the total cement. These fractions may be further studied chemically and petrographically and micrometric measurements can be made of the grains. Petrographic, by the method of immersion, and by making thin sections from test pats of both neat cements and standard mortars. At the time flotation appeared upon the metallurgical horizon in Arizona, the writer, under the direction of Dr. Ricketts, was engaged in remodeling and enlarging the No. 6 Concentration Plant of the Arizona Copper Co. at Morenci, and the work had been in progress nearly a year before the Inspiration experiments with flotation had disclosed the revolution in concentration that was at that time impending. The simplified flow sheet worked out for the remodeling of the Morenci plant had been based upon the removal of the freed metal in a minimum number of stages by treatment upon tables equipped with Butchart riffles, the latter being adapted to accomplish both classification of feed and removal of the metal at one operation, substantially as described in my previous paper.l The scheme of treatment for the slime was based upon the well-known fact that after copper sulphides, such as chalcocite and chalcopy-rite, etc., are reduced to a certain extremely fine state of comminution they are definitely beyond the reach of separation upon any of the concentrating devices then known. By using drag-belt classifiers (which served as conveyors as well as separators), the overflow ,would be of the usual "slimes" class. Experiment had shown that when these drag-belt overflows were properly diluted (that is, to about 5 to 7 per cent. solids in the feed under treatment) the very fine sand, and especially the very fine but still granular sulphide particles, would, if given a short distance to fall, quickly settle out in prime condition to yield an excellent recovery on vanners; a further valuable feature would be that the very fine non-separable final overflow tonnage might be discharged direct to tailing, thus conserving space requirements so as to permit within the old building, without embarrassment, the increase of capacity required. With petroleum consumption declining temporarily after V-J day, the oil industry is urged to use this period as a kind of stopgap to rebuild its war-depleted inventories and help cushion the effect of this decline on producers and refiners. Higher inventories should be reestablished, since recent experiences have indicated that, by and large, the present inventories of crude oil are too low even with the tremendous current production available. The following analysis indicates that inventory levels could be built up to about 490,000,000 bbl. by the end of 1947, an increase of about 40,000,000 bbl. over the reported stock estimated for the war's end. If at the end of the war the military have some 20,000,000 bbl. on hand, this inventory will either be resold to the industry or certain demands that have been assumed to be met by industry will be supplied out of these military stocks, which would leave about 20,000,000 bbl. (net) to be built up from current production. For stock rebuilding the industry could use 10,000,000 bbl. of crude plus 10,00,000 bbl. of products, totaling 20,000,000 bbl. If this were spread over a year, this would mean 55,000 bbl. a day. By analyzing the average inventories held in a year with the total quantity of goods handled during the year, the following study and tables indicate how far the inventories should increase in the immediate postwar period. Introduction For the period immediately following V-J day, most of the petroleum economists have forecast a considerable decline in the total consumption of petroleum and its products in the United States. This will be caused by the elimination of most of the military demands and the inability of civilians to immediately replace automobiles, burners, etc., and thus increase their requirements to make up for the military decline. When the automobile industry has been back on full production for two or three years, civilians will be able to consume much larger quantities of gasoline. Delay in the manufacture of new oil burners and the time it takes to construct new homes, adds up to the same story for distillate fuels. In reviewing this outlook, the question has arisen whether the petroleum industry should not use this period of lower consumption as a kind of stopgap to rebuild its war-depleted inveritories and help cushion the effect on producers and refiners of this sudden drop in requirements. Some persons have indicated that hundreds of thousands of barrels a day could be used for this purpose extending over a year or more. Refineries will be in existence, which could run over 5,000,000 bbl. of crude oil a day and crude-oil production might be running 600,000 to 700,000 bbl. a day above the demands now forecast for the period after V-J day. Reasons for. Making Inventories In order to plan intelligently for this period, the petroleum industry should determine the needs for the establishment of higher inventories for crude and petroleum products than have been carried during the war. X-ray and metallographic analysis reveal that the preferred cryslallograPhic relationships in direc-tionally solid~fied Pb-Sn eutectic specimens can be stated: interface growth direction, Experiments in which tin single-crystal seeds were used to nucleate the eutectic demonstrate that the normal lamellar structure observed at steady state can be forced to break down initially to a semide-generate structure when the crystallograPhic direction of the tin seed does not lie within the preferred eutectic interface plane. A normal structure eventually develops by preferred grain growth. X-ray topo-graphs and rocking curves substantiate that the perfection of eutectic samples increases as growth proceeds until steady-state conditions prevail. RECENT years have seen substantial progress made in the understanding of eutectic solidification through both intensive theoretical1'' and experimental investigations (see Ref. 7 for a review and extensive bibliography of both aspects). Several important observations concerning the nucleation and growth aspects of binary eutectic solidification have been brought to light. Briefly some of these include the nonrecipro-cal nucleation of one phase upon another,'j9 the tendency for a specific low-index direction of one or both phases of the eutectic to be aligned in the growth direction during unidirectional solidification,'0711 and the production of lamellar microstructures having a preferred interface plane between "11-13 phases. Questions quite naturally arise as to the mechanism by which preferred grain growth evolves during eutectic solidification and what relationships (if any) connect the initial nucleation of one phase upon another with the preferred growth directions and interface planes observed after a few centimeters of growth in many systems. This study was initiated in an attempt to answer these questions. An experiment was devised in which both the nucleation and growth steps in the crystallization of a binary eutectic, Pb-Sn, could be correlated with subsequently developed eutectic morphology and crystallography. This was accomplished by nucleating the eutectic upon a tin single crystal seed and then causing the eutectic to grow from the seed by directional freezing. The morphology of the structures produced in this manner was then monitored metallographically and the orientation relationships and substructural perfection determined by X-ray analysis. The information thus ob- tained was correlated to the growth history of the samples. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS The eutectic of composition 38.1 wt pct Pb and 61.9 wt pct sn14 was prepared by accurately weighing lead and tin of 99.999+ (from ASARCO and Lytess Metals and Chemicals, respectively), melting in a clean Pyrex beaker under an argon blanket, and casting into the proper crucible for resolidification as described below. Tin seeds were grown by the method of ~halmers," saw-cut, oriented by the Laue method, and soldered to the pull rod of the Czochralski puller. All seeds were given a final electropolishing (to assure the removal of any deformed material from the cutting operation) and acetone degreasing immediately prior to the nucleation experiment in which they were to be used. Eutectic samples were unidirectionally solidified in a horizontal graphite boat1' or by pulling from the melt16 with tin (or graphite) seeds. A flowing argon atmosphere was employed in all experiments and growth rates and temperature gradients, constant for a given run, varied from 2 to 4 cm per hr and 8" to 15°C per cm over the course of all the experi-

Publications concerning scaling laws for laboratory flow models of oil reservoirs indicate that the relative permeability and capillary pressure relations must be the same functions of saturation in the model and its prototype. In this paper, the relative permeabilities and saturations are redefined in a way which permits one to have diflerent relative permeability and capillary pressure relations in the model and prototype. The development of the new scaling criteria is demonstrated by deriving scaling laws for one simple flow problem. INTRODUCTION The successful application of information gathered through bench-scale model studies to the prediction of multi-phase fluid flow behavior in petroleum reservoirs requires careful consideration of the scaling criteria. The requirements which must be met for a small-scale model to duplicate the behavior of a much larger reservoir prototype have been discussed by Leverett, et al,' Rapoport,2 and Geertsma, et al.3 According to these authors, the relative permeabilities to water, oil and gas and the dimensionless capillary pressures must be the must have the same values in the model and prototype. Furthermore, they point out that the viscosity ratios must have the same values in the model and prototype. In addition to these requirements, other scaling criteria are given which, when considered, usually dictate a much higher permeability in the model than exists in the reservoir. Since the more permeable model sands may have connate-water and residual oil saturations quite different from those in the prototype, the scaling requirements pertaining to the dependence of relative permeabilities and dimension l ess capillary pressures on saturation usually are not met. Also, if the model fluids are selected to give equal viscosity ratios in the model and prototype, one may find greatly different mobility ratios* in the two cases and, therefore, may expect grossly different flow patterns. For this reason, Craig, et al,' correlated the results of their model studies with mo- bility ratio rather than with viscosity ratio. As yet, however, no satisfactory method has been advanced which permits use of anything other than the scaling requirements outlined in the previously mentioned papers. The purpose of this paper is to present a method of developing a set of scaling criteria which permits different relationships between saturation and relative permeability or capillary pressure in the model and prototype. Rather than attempt to report scaling criteria for a variety of practical situations, this paper demonstrates by use of one simple example how the modified scaling criteria are derived.

Soft solders are used principally in the automotive, can-making, building construction and electrical industries, but their field of usefulness extends well beyond these principal users to a vast list of miscellaneous applications where metal joints are required. The most common soft solders and the only ones considered in this discussion are those composed of lead and tin, with or without various relatively small percentages of impurities or additions. A small amount of antimony is often purposely added. As an indication of the importance of these lead-tin solders, 8620 long tons of tin were consumed in 1934 in the United States for making new solder, and during most of 1935 from 900 to 1000 long tons often were used each month. In addition, many thousands of tons of secondary solder are recirculated annually. A great many factors influence the properties of joints made with soft solders. Fluxes and the fluxing procedure used to prepare the surfaces to be joined in order to give a true metal-to-metal contact are among the most important of these factors. The temperatures used, cleanliness of the work and general soldering technique have their effect, but when results are unsatisfactory they are usually attributed to the metallic solder itself and the raw materials from which it is made. Sometimes criticism of the solder is justified. The wrong composition may be chosen for a given job, impurities may be present that ruin certain desired qualities, or uniformity may be lacking. A solder may even be looked upon with suspicion because of its ancestry, regardless of its true composition and behavior. To clarify the effect of slight differences in composition as found in commercially refined solders, a comparison of properties of solders grouped according to their origin has been undertaken. The Infrasizer Mk III, developed at the University of Toronto, is capable of sizing particles of a few pm to hundreds of pm according to particle terminal velocity, which is a function of particle density, size and shape. The factors limiting the performance of the Infrasizer Mk III have been presented and analyzed. It has been established theoretically and experimentally that the device has excellent potential as a laboratory instrument. The principle is applicable to a continuous production classifier, a prototype of which is now under development.

THE Geophysics Education Committee has devoted several years to a consideration of the problem of training geophysicists. Past reports have dealt largely with fact finding and with the discussion of particular aspects of geophysical education. In the present report it is proposed to review the subject more comprehensively. This involves the question of what educational qualifications the geophysicist of the highest professional standards should possess, and the related question of what changes must be effected in existing educational institutions in order that prospective professional geophysicists may obtain instruction of the desired quality. The type of geophysicist here contemplated is one familiar with what is known already in the several branches of earth physics, and capable not only of following contemporary progress in any of these branches, but of contributing to that progress in a research capacity. Geophysics in its broadest sense, as has been emphasized repeatedly by this Committee, is the study of the physics of the earth and of terrestrial processes. This includes both the static and the dynamic characteristics of the gaseous, the liquid, and the solid portions of the earth, as well as its gravitational, thermal, and magnetic and electrical manifestations. Some branches of earth physics have been cultivated but slightly; others have reached an advanced state of development. Those branches whose development is sufficient to warrant explicit recognition in the form of organized Sections of the American Geophysical Union are: geodesy, seismology, tectonophysics, and volcanology, dealing with the rock constituents of the earth; oceanography and hydrology with the aqueous constituents; meteorology with the atmospheric constituents; and terrestrial electricity and magnetism with the electromagnetic manifestations. At present, instruction on the professional level in any of these branches of earth physics can be obtained in but few universities in North America. In most institutions where such instruction is undertaken different subjects are given in different and independent departments. Geodesy and hydrology are taught, if at all, as a part of civil engineering. THE advent of the Rocky Mountain States into prominence as an oil-producing region is comparatively recent. Scarcely more than a decade has passed since the number of producing oilfields in this part of the country were few and their combined yield small and relatively unimportant. However, oil was discovered and recorded near the present site of Lander, Wyo., as early as 1833 and in 1867, on the comple-tion of the Union Pacific R. R., the site of this oil discovery was located, among other things, as a natural resource of economic importance. In that year a well was drilled for oil, to a depth of 480 ft., near Evanston, Wyo., but later was abandoned. In 1883, the Lander district witnessed the successful completion of the first oil well in the state. In Colorado, oil was first produced from shallow open wells near Canon City and sold to prospectors in 1864; in 1887, the Florence oilfield was discovered and a commercial production developed. While the Rocky Mountain States have never gained the prominence as an oil-producing region attained by the Pacific Coast, Mid-Continent, or Gulf fields, a substantial and increasing production is being taken from the Rocky Mountain province. At the close of 1923, the oil industry in this region has 38 oil and 21 gas fields producing, or capable of producing, oil or gas in a commercial way with a combined annual yield of nearly 47,000,000 bbl. of oil, a daily refining capacity aggregating about 90,000 bbl., upwards of 17,000,000 bbl. of crude in storage, and an 8-in. pipeline, nearing completion, 600 miles long which will connect the most prolific oilfield of the Rocky Mountain States with a trunk pipeline between Mid-Continent and the east at Carrollton, Mo. Several of the larger standard and independent operating companies are now represented in this region and, in the last ten years, there has been developed at Casper one of the large refining centers of the west. Fig. 1 illustrates the rise in production of four of the larger fields, also in the total production of the state; in addition there is given the yield of the larger fields of Wyoming and Montana for 1923.

Results of correlations between strength-development and sintering shrinkage occurring during induration are presented. A mathematical treatment of the shrinkage kinetics is, next, given and is based on the use of semi-empirical equations. The discussion stresses the significance of kinetic constants and activation energies in the assessment of iron ore concentrates for pelletizing and induration. Next, starting with the assumption that there is a need for parameters to characterize the iron-ore concentrates and relate these parameters to shrinkage-kinetic constants and balling behaviour, results of compaction measurements and pore structure characterization (mercury porosimetry) are presented and discussed.

THE Cartersville barite district is near Cartersville, Ga., in the southeastern part of Bartow County, about 43 miles northeast of Atlanta. The area over which active mining is being done extends about six miles in a northeasterly direction and is about three miles wide. Barite production in Georgia began about 1907,1but the existence of the mineral was known much earlier. At present four companies are operating washing plants and three other plants are operating on leases from those companies. The chief impurities in the ores are silica and iron oxide. The silica is easily washed and jigged out and gives little trouble. Any gravity separation between the iron and the barite is generally poor, owing to the slight difference in specific gravity. Two operators have turned to magnetic separation as the solution to the problem and have made remarkable improvements in the finished product. By very close sizing prior to jigging, the separation between iron and barite has been greatly improved. In some localities manganese occasionally appears as an impurity, but is fairly easy to eliminate by gravity methods. A considerable percentage of iron and silica is eliminated by being broken free in crushing. Until methods for the recovery of fine ore were introduced a minimum of crushing was done, but modern methods allow more than formerly. The depression years brought about the need for increased recovery of ore handled on the part of the producers and a demand for a higher grade of product on the part of the buyers. Improvements in milling and mining practice have had a far greater effect, however, than merely the production of a better grade of ore with greater recovery. They have opened for mining large areas that a few years ago were considered noncommercial deposits because of their inaccessibility and their high iron content. It is no exaggeration to say that the new methods have more than doubled present known reserves of barite ore of economic value.
