FAILURES in railroad rails have been of vital concern to engineers; railroad executives, rail manufacturers and the general public for years. Failures from transverse fissures originating from internal nuclei have received particular attention in the past 20 years. Dr. J. E. Howard first reported this type of failure in 1911, as being responsible for a wreck-on the Lehigh Valley R. R. in which several lives were lost. Since then many transverse fissures have been found. In 1919, Waring and Hofammann1 etched longitudinal sections of rails in hot acid and found cracks extending both longitudinally and transversely in certain used rails as well as in some new rails.. Since then it has been thought by many that these "shatter" cracks are the nuclei from which transverse fissures subsequently develop in service. Methods for reducing the rate of cooling rails on the hot. bed have been devised to decrease the temperature gradient and consequently the stress gradient in the rails. A study of the tensile properties of rails at elevated temperatures was made by Freeman and Quick,2 who investigated the properties at temperatures through which rails pass on the cooling bed after leaving the hot saw. In their investigation a special study was made of the ductility of the steels in the temperature range 400° to 700° C. In this temperature range it was found that certain rail and other steels showed a marked decrease in elongation and reduction of area. The phenomenon was called "secondary brittleness" and the temperature range the "secondary brittle range." A tentative explanation was presented that internal failure such as "shatter cracks" and "hair cracks" in rails are the result of thermal stresses developed in the steel structure while cooling through the secondary brittle range. The investigation showed that the magnitude of the phenomenon varies for different heats, but that it did not differ for specimens from different ingots or for different rails in a particular ingot. WITHIN the past few years, considerable development has been made in the coal-mining industry in Illinois and Indiana and it is the purpose of the authors to record its most important phases. Perhaps the two most striking features are the entry into the producing fields of certain large consumers of coal and the magnitude of some of the new operations. Mines are now being equipped by the. Chicago & Northwestern R. R., the Chicago,. Burlington & Quincy R. R., the Standard Oil Co., of Indiana, and the Union Electric Light & Power Co. of St. Louis. Besides, the U. S. Steel Corpn. has increased its coal-mining activities by commencing operations on its large holdings northeast of Benton, Franklin Co., Ill. Until recent years, the supply of coal has commonly been adequate and prices have generally been favorable, especially to large consumers, as the magnitude of their purchases enabled them to obtain satisfactory quotations from producers. In fact, most consumers of coal have believed that they could buy their fuel more satisfactorily in the open market than they could produce it themselves. The entry of the United States into the war was accompanied by various disarrangements of industrial conditions, and a demand for coal in excess of the supply seemed likely to be experienced for an indefinite period. Under these circumstances it seemed that the greatest assurance of a supply of fuel was its production by the operation of mines. In the case of the Chicago & Northwestern R. R. and the U. S. Steel Corpn. the production of coal has been carried on for many years with satisfactory results, but the C. B. & Q. R. R., the Union Electric Light & Power Co. and the Standard Oil Co. of Indiana had not been producers of coal, at least in this district. Apparently the most impressive feature of the newest mines is their capacity, for in some cases it is planned that production shall be in the neighborhood of 1000 tons per hr. THERE are both advantages and disadvantages in using semikilled steels in place of killed steels. One advantage of semikilled steels is they provide a higher ingot-to-product yield. This is especially important to shipbuilders in the time of national emergency. By using semikilled steel for hull plates, a greater number of ships can be built from the same ingot tonnage. Consequently, if semikilled steel plates are adequate for the service, the advantage of the higher product yield is of considerable importance. The performance of hull plates is closely associated with the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, and this, in turn, is strongly dependent on the composition of the steel. A low transition temperature is desirable because it indicates that the steel is less likely to fail at low ambient temperatures. Killed steels are known to have lower transition temperatures than semikilled steels. It is believed that the better qualities of killed steels in this respect are due mainly to the low oxygen contents of the steel. The principal deoxidizers, aluminum, silicon, and manganese, lower the oxygen content. Fundamental studies1-0 have shown that the oxygen content remaining after the addition of one of these three elements is influenced by the residual amounts of the other two present. In the current study, therefore, various amounts of silicon and aluminum were added to steels containing different manganese contents for the purpose of studying the influence of silicon and aluminum on the notched-bar properties of hot-rolled steels. Eleven types of steels were studied. The temperature at which the plates were finish-rolled was care- fully controlled at 1850°F. All plates were rolled to ¾-in. thickness, and tested in the as-rolled condition. The total number of steels prepared in the laboratory for this study was 95. The charge consisting of ingot iron and ferrosilicon equivalent to 0.10 pct Si was melted in a 200-lb induction furnace under an atmosphere of argon to insure low, uniform nitrogen contents. After the charge was melted and the desired temperature was obtained, the melt was partly deoxidized with either silicomanganese or aluminum. Aluminum was used for this purpose in only those steels with very low silicon contents, where the finished steel was to contain some aluminum. This initial deoxidizing addition was made to obtain consistent recoveries of subsequent additions of ferro-manganese, ferrosilicon, and aluminum. Carbon, in the form of graphite, was added, either just prior to tap or to the final aluminum addition. The entire heat of 200 lb was poured directly into a 6x6-in. big-end-up mold. The ingots of semikilled steel were capped with a steel plate. The killed steels, on the other hand, were poured with a hot-top containing 14 pct of the total volume of the ingot. The ingots were processed by heating to 2250°F, followed by forging to slabs 1¾ in. thick and 6 in. wide. After reheating to 2250°F, the slabs were rolled to 0.9-in. gage, using reductions of approximately 1/6 in. per pass. The 0.9-in. thick plates were immediately recharged in a furnace held at 1850°F. After 30 min in the furnace at 1850°F, the plates were rolled to ¾ in. in one pass. Following the final pass, the plates were stacked on edge on a brick floor, with a brick separating one from another, where they were allowed to cool in air. Drillings for chemical analysis were taken from the plates at locations corresponding to the top and bottom of each ingot. A fatigue study in completely reversed axial tension-compression has been perforried on high-purity titanium and on three high-purity alloys of titanium. The alloys each contain approxi7nately 0.75 at. pct of a single interstitial element; carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, respectivley. The results corroborate a previously published theory which proposed that strain aging under alternating stress was responsible for the fatigue limit behavior of certain alloys. The present data indicate that in these alloys an increasing strain-talline aging effect under alternating stress is provided by oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen, respectively. CURRENT research on the nature of the fatigue limit in metals suggests that the presence of a fatigue limit in metallic materials is a manifestation of strain aging that occurs under alternating stress.lm5 A comprehensive theoretical model based on the above hypothesis has been developed to explain the existence of a fatigue limit.' This model also provides increased insight into several other fatigue phenomena as under stressing, overstressing, and coaxing effects. The theory, as well, provides equal understanding for those cases where no real fatigue limit is observed. Briefly, this theory assumes that the S-N curve for a pure metal is a smooth function of the applied stress, and the effect of adding an element that is soluble (or forms a precipitate) in the pure metal is simply to shift the S-N curve to the right. If the added element confers the power to strain age, the result is a further shift of the S-N curve, this time upward and to the right. Since strain aging is not expected to be a strong function of stress, and since damage per cycle is known to be quite stress dependent, it is to be expected that there will be some limiting lower stress at which the strengthening due to strain aging will balance the damage due to crack propagation. This stress is the fatigue limit. The position of the fatigue-limit knee was thought to be a function of the magnitude of the strain-aging effect on both the finite and infinite life portions of the S-N curve. Although the strain aging hypothesis seems to be reasonably valid for bcc materials,2'6 it needed to be tested for both fcc and cph metals. This report is the first of a series concerning the fatigue-limit behavior of titanium with varying amounts of the interstitial solutes (C, N,, and 4) that are known to cause static strain aging in titanium. Yield-point effects have been reported for polycrys-talline high-purity titanium alloys containing either carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen.7'9 These effects were observed at testing temperatures in the range 100 to 300'. In addition yield-point and strain-aging effects have been reported for single crystals of titanium containing 0.1 wt pct C plus N.' These yield points were observed over a wide temperature range, but no room-temperature aging occurred. Aging at 180' was required to cause the return of the yield point. The magnitude of the yield phenomena in titanium containing interstitials is not expected to be as large as is observed in bcc metals because of several factors. Titanium has a very high chemical affinity for oxygen and nitrogen. The thermodynamic stability of solutions of oxygen or nitrogen in titanium is recognized. Lattice parameter measurements of titanium containing arbon, oxygen,1° or nitrogen" show that the "c" parameter is expanded more than the "a" parameter, but that up to about 2 wt pct this results in an insignificant change of the axial ratio 'c/a." Ehrlich" has shown that the sites occupied by interstitial atoms in titanium are spherically symmetrical and therefore a lattice expansion, at a constant c/a ratio, results in a simple dilation of the interstitial site. Such a dilation involving no shear has been shown to react only with edge components of dislocations.13 This causes only a weak pinning action. Shear stresses would be anticipated locally when only one of the two interstitial positions was occupied. The carbon atom will cause a symmetrical distortion of the lattice whereas the oxygen and nitrogen atoms have, in addition, the previously mentioned chemical affinity of titanium for these elements. These factors will result in a considerably smaller reduction of free energy upon the association of interstitial atoms with dislocations, and therefore a much weaker pinning than has been observed for the bcc metals. These considerations would lead to the hypothesis that of the interstitial elements considered here carbon would cause the strongest pinning effect in titanium where the amount of interstitial in solution is constant. This hypothesis will be borne out in the analysis of the present results.

THE mines operated by the Compañia de Real del Monte y Pachuca, Pachuca, Mexico, are in two districts, the Pachuca, and Real del Monte. The principal area of mineralization is within a rectangle roughly 10 miles from east to west and 6 miles from north to south. It contains a number of veins from 2 to 20 ft. wide, which are exploited by this mining company. The scattered position of the producing mines led to the construction of two mills between 1906 and 1908; the Loreto mill, in Pachuca, averaged 2600 tons daily, and the Guerrero mill, in Real del Monte, milled 1270 tons daily. On Feb. 1, 1929, the management decided to enlarge the Loreto mill to take the combined tonnage of both mills at that time. This economic measure required the centralization of ore delivery, which would also afford a material saving in the cost of ore transport. The centralization would give the company the following advantages over the former system of operation: 1. Beneficiation at a single mill, closer to source of materials and supplies than the abandoned- Guerrero mill. The refinery is, also in the Loreto patio. 2. Ore delivery to surface at one point (San Juan Pachuca shaft) instead of at four. 3. Elimination of aerial tramways. To show what would be required to effect this centralization, it is necessary to describe the means by which the ore was delivered to the two mills, prior to centralization. The heart of the Real del Monte district is roughly four miles from that of the Pachuca section. The producing mines in these two districts were: Pachuca district: Santa Ana mine Camelia group

AS far back as 40 years ago management made the initial steps toward utilizing the large amount of reject marble produced by the dimension stone quarries in sized products. In 1947 the Calcium Products Div. of the Georgia Marble Co. was organized to manufacture crushed, ground, and screened products from Georgia marble.* It became obvious early in operations that salability of any products of this type was determined by several factors: high calcium carbonate content, whiteness, dryness, and cleanness. Because no reject material could consistently meet these specifications, Calcium Products Div. now operates three underground quarries for raw material feed. In underground operations no stripping is required, surface contamination and trash are eliminated, weather causes no operational difficulties, and the raw material is maintained dry for plant processing.

In 1917 Haighl presented evidence that under simultaneous corrosion and cyclic stress metals may fail at lower stresses than if the corrosion is prior to the cyclic stress. In 1926 the author, while investigating the cooling effect of water on the fatigue resistance of metals, found that under these conditions steel specimens fail at stresses far below the endurance limit.2 (By "endurance limit" is here meant the fatigue limit obtained with specimens as free as possible from stress concentration and corrosive influences.) This led to an investigation (at the Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md.) of the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. This investigation may be divided into three parts. The first part was a general survey of the conditions necessary to cause complete failure under corrosion and cyclic stress of relatively high frequency. The entire process by which metals fail under these conditions was called LLcorrosion-fatigue." Corrosion-fatigue limits" for a large number of metals were determined and the relationships of these limits to chemical composition, heat treatment and physical properties were established. The conclusion was reached that corrosion-fatigue is due to the accelerating influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. Results of this part of the investigation were presented in five papers.*-= The second part of the investigation was a preliminary study of the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion. Each experiment was conducted in two stages. The first was a corrosion stage in which the specimen was corroded under cyclic stress; the second was a fatigue stage, in which the previously corroded specimen was tested (without further corrosion) to determine its fatigue limit. The difference between this fatigue limit and the endurance limit was used as a criterion of the "damage" due to

The first use of electric punched card accounting machines as an aid in calculating reserves at the Sullivan mine in Kimberly, B.C., was made in January, 1948. At that time their use was limited to totalling individual reserve blocks for the various reserve classes and for calculating total metal content. The immediate objective was to increase speed, improve accuracy, and to effect some savings in labor that could be employed more usefully elsewhere. It was recognized also that the potential for achieving even greater advantages was excellent. The initial experiment proved so successful that it was inevitable that the use of the method would expand. Thus, for the past nine years assay data from core hole and development headings have been processed by these machines and the results integrated with the program of calculating reserves. It was also learned that the machines could store and classify a large amount of other information concerning the mining characteristics of each reserve block in addition to tonnage and metal content. This has proven very useful for the preparation of monthly production reports as well as in long term planning, in forecasting production schedules, and in analysing the results achieved.

Single aluminum crystals were subjected to creep in simple shear on the (111) planes in the slip direction. The activation energies for creep were calculated from the effect of small abrupt changes in temperature on the creep rate just before and immediately following the temperature change. The results definitely establish the fact that creep of single aluminum crystals occurs by-three unique processes, characterized by thethree distinct and isolatable activation energies: The 35,-500-cal-per-mole activation energy obtained at the highest temperatures was ascribed to a dislocativationtion climb process; the 28,000-cal-per-mole activation-energy process, occurring over the intermediate-temperature range was attributed to a cross-slip mechanism; and it was suggested thot the 3400-cal-per-mole process observed below 400°K may be the Peierls energy. THE most pertinent question regarding the phenomenon of creep in crystalline materials is concerned with the identity of the crystallographic mechanisms of deformation that control the creep rate. For many years slight progress was made in uncovering the basic mechanisms for creep. Over the past 10 years, however, two parallel lines of investigations have contributed to a more definitive understanding of the processes involved in creep. The extensive development and maturing of dislocation theories for deformation of crystalline materials' proved to be of paramount importance for this progress. And second in importance was the replacement of the former prosaic methods of creep testing by new techniques'." which were especially

INTRODUCTION THE Bureau of Mines is investigating the problem of slag viscosity, its variation with the temperature and with the composition of the slag, and its effect upon the distribution of the sulphur between molten iron and slag, as introductory to a series of contributions to the theory of the metallurgical processes. The method of measurement, viscosity, apparatus, furnace and other accessories mentioned in this paper have been described fully in a Bureau of Mines report.1 THE LITERATURE ON SLAG VISCOSITY The viscosity of blast-furnace slag had not been measured previous to the investigation described in this report. A number of investigators have determined the "fusibility," or softening temperature, of slags by means of the cone method or, other deformation method, but these methods supply only limited information regarding the temperature-viscosity relations.-of the slag in question. Any deformation method that may be employed indicates only the temperature at which the slag attains a more or less definite viscosity, the magnitude of the value obtained depending on the method used. For details of the various methods used by different investigators, see, the Bureau of Mines paper already referred to. An isolated measurement by Doelter on a single mixture at 1,300° C. represents the highest temperature reached in the various viscosity investigations previous to those described in this report, in which results have been referred to absolute units. Arbitrary deformation tests have of course been made at much higher temperatures.

OF THE many categories into which scientific knowledge has been arbitrarily divided, the one which has proved most applicable in our attempts to gain an insight into the details of steelmaking processes is physical chemistry. To the young metallurgist who has only recently survived a college course in this subject, the application of its principles to reactions in liquid steel should not be difficult. To one who has had no such course or whose auld acquaintance with the subject has all but been forgot, such application is all too often thwarted by the abstruse presentations of the subject found in many of the available textbooks. AS a tool for the control of a complex process involving many chemical reactions, physical chemistry can become very valuable. The specialist who is using this tool for many purposes and perhaps contributing to its development will want to know a great deal more about it than can be included in this book. He will be interested in its history, its accomplishments and limitations, and its applications to many and varied problems. To the steelmaker or metallurgist, however, it is only one of a number of tools that he must use. He is willing to forego the detailed study of its inner workings in order to concentrate upon the development of skill in its application. It is the purpose of this chapter to present a simplified view of physical chemistry as a tool of great potential usefulness. This purpose and the desire for brevity have required the elimination of many of the gadgets with which the tool is usually adorned. It is hoped that this simplification will be conducive to clear understanding. The beginner is urged not to overlook the more extended treatments of the standard textbooks.* He is assured at the same time that the basic tool is sound and serviceable and is guaranteed to give satisfaction if regularly lubricated with common sense. Certain parts of physical chemistry require rather formidable mathematics for their complete development, but in the main those applications in which we are here interested can be expressed in fairly

Throughout the history of mankind, the principal use of coal has been to produce heat through combustion. The heat is used in many ways: to warm air space for our comfort; to provide heat or energy to power industrial processes, such as cement and steel production ; and to produce electricity. Because it is our nation's most abundant fossil energy fuel, coal in the late 20th century is on the threshold of becoming a significant source for synthetic liquids and gas energy fuels for this country. This is made possible by conversion processes which can change solid coal into various synthetic gases and liquids. These coal-derived fuels are nearly identical to the processed fuels and chemicals provided by natural gas and crude oils, which presently provide almost all the petrochemical feedstocks and energy fuels needed for the residential, light commercial, and transportation markets. A revolution is beginning to take place, not only in the United States, but in many other countries with a return to a coal-based energy economy. Also, new combustion and conversion technologies which are compatible with national health and environmental goals are rapidly emerging. These technologies will allow coal's use to be expanded not only in its traditional markets, but also to supply markets held by natural gas and crude oil. With the worldwide decline in natural gas and crude oil reserves, coal is being looked upon to meet the energy demand. Because of these new coal conversion technologies, coal will no longer be only a combustion fuel, but a valuable raw material for production of a variety of clean fuels and chemicals. Uranium exploration technology historically has followed the economic cycle of demand, exploration spurt, and trailing supply; but with a greater lag. Greatest progress was made during the wane of demand as geological investigation caught up with the flood of new discoveries made during relatively short periods of peak demand. Updating brought technology to a new level based on the deposits which were discovered and not on the total range of deposit types which might exist. The technology was seldom able to predict new deposit types or new districts, which have consistently been surprises. Yet each new cycle of increased demand was at a new higher level, occasioned by a new use, which required the discovery of previously unrecognized larger types of deposits. Hindsight shows that data sufficient to have predicted most discoveries were available. The predicted growth of uranium demand far in excess of estimated resources is an incentive to examine current technology for data or promising techniques that might foster discovery by technical prediction rather than by systematic drilling. The world could well be reexamined systematically with new geophysical techniques including gamma spectrometry, radon emanometry, and magnetometry. Known occurrences could well be reevaluated in the light of new data on mineralization process and supergene leaching. Less-leachable extrinsic elements associated with uranium might he sought as clues to unleached uranium at depth. Uranium is increasingly being noted in environments containing coal and petroleum which might become targets. High-temperature replacement disseminations are increasingly reported and particularly attractive as exemplified by the Rossing district. The number of formations containing uranium occurrences is growing so that new, not necessarily fluvial, formations might be productive. Enough drilling has been done to indicate that uranium is selectively distributed regionally under some control yet to be determined. Exploration should address those environments and areas where uranium could occur rather than only those where it is already known.

Certain local conditions were known to govern in large measure the successful adaptation of liquid-oxygen explosives to the large-scale blasting at Chuquicamata. The wide variation in hardness of the rock at this mine makes necessary the use of several types of explosives. A locally manufactured, relatively cheap black powder is used in blasting the softer waste and capping material, where a thorough displacement breaks the ground sufficiently. Before the introduction of L. 0. X., an ammonia dynamite of about 65 per cent. strength was being used exclusively in the harder underlying orebody, where a strong disruptive as well as a displacement effect is required for breaking the ore. The L. 0. X., as developed for quarry work in the United States, has a practically pure carbon cartridge material, and the explosive has an extremely high rate of detonation, which should therefore cause it to develop usefully its full disruptive effect in hard ground. The individual blasts at Chuquicamata arc large, black-powder shots which dislodge masses of rock averaging 250,000 tons each, and dynamite shots which dislodge masses averaging 80,000 tons each. It was desirable, therefore, to attempt to displace with L. 0. X. the faster, higher-cost ammonia dynamite used in the smaller blasts. It was not considered practical to attempt to displace the low-cost black powder with 1,. 0. X., as estimated costs showed no probable saving if this were accomplished. Since it was desirable to continue shooting relatively large blasts for effective operation, it was recognized that larger storage facilities than had been in use would be needed for the liquid oxygen. Because of the difficulty of transporting and discharging large storage containers of efficient design, the better plan appeared to be storage and discharge of the liquid at the place of manufacture, and transportation of the filled soaking boxes to the blast. Present Liquid-oxygen Plant An experimental unit with a rated capacity of 75 liters per hour was erected during the latter part of the year 1926 to prove the effectiveness of L. 0. X. at this mine, its cost, and possible efficiency of large-scale storage of the liquid. With this experimental unit 200,000 tons of ore

Iron ore in the Menominee district is mined from two iron-formations of middle Precambrian age. The older formation is present in the northeastern part; is composed mainly of hematite, magnetite, quartz, and minor silicates; and contains about 34 per cent iron. The rock has been so coarsened by meta- morphism that concentration of magnetite and hematite is feasib!e, and pellets containing more than 60 per cent iron are being produced. The older formation is also present in the southeastern part where it has 1:een only slightly metamorphosed. Ore containing more than 50 per cent iron was formerly mined from local residual concentrations of iron oxides from which silica had been sufficiently leached, or replaced by iron oxide, or affected by combinations of these processes. The younger iron-formation occurs in the western part of the district and, if unaltered, is interlayered siderite and chert. The ore in this area also contains more than 50 per cent iron and formed as local residual concentrations but in two stages. The siderite was converted to iron oxides (hematite and "limonite"), and silica was contemporaneously or subsequently removed by leaching, or replacement, or combinations of these processes.

The process of molten-zone refining is analyzed for long ingots and many zone passages. Formulas are derived which give the resultant impurity distribution in terms of finite series. A comparison with the approximate procedure of Hamming is given. HE physical principles and applications of an extremely physicalprinciple efficient form of metallurgical refinement has been described by Pfann. The purpose of the present paper is to describe a method of analyzing exactly the particular program used which enables the segregation effect to be predicted for any number of molten-zone passages in a long ingot. The method is applied to the particular case of refinement of an ingot whose impurity initially is uniformly distributed throughout its length. A number of molten zones of equal length are passed through the ingot effecting a radical redistribution of impurity. Pfann has indicated an approximate method, due to R. W. Hamming, of calculating the resultant concentration after each successive zone pass for a particular value of the segregation constant defined in his paper. Here a solution will be presented in terms of the number of zone passes and the segregation constant. The expression, though cumbersome, is exact and susceptible to ordinary numerical computation procedures. The results of a similar computation using the procedure of Hamming are presented in a table together with the exact results of the present method. The discrepancy in terms of absolute concentrations is tabulated for the first eight zone-lengths. To establish the notation (which follows that of Pfann1 as closely as possible) and physical basis of the analytical equations, the physical model and principal assumptions may be reviewed. An alloy of two elements, where there is formed a continuous range of solid solutions, usually does not melt as a simple compound. Rather, a temperature is reached where the solid solution is in heterogeneous phase equilibrium with a liquid solution of different composition. The temperature dependence of these equilibrium compositions forms part of the phase diagram. For very small concentrations of a solute B in a solvent A, this usually takes the form of Fig. 1. Sometimes the solidus and liquidus slope upward. This corresponds to a segregation constant (defined below) which is greater than unity. The segregation constant is now defined as k = Cn(x)/CnI(x) [1] where C,,(x) is the impurity concentration in the solid ingot at distance x during the nth passing of a molten zone and Cnl (x) is the impurity concentration of the liquid zone from which the solid at dis- tance x is formed (see Fig. 4 of ref. 1.) C (x) remains the same after passage of the zone. The constant k may be either greater or less than unity in general. Purification in the former case is effected only in a finite ingot and in the portion that is melted last. For k less than unity purification is effected even in an infinite ingot. The method which follows gives, in the former case, the successive increases in impurity concentration and, in the latter case, the successive decreases in concentration. The general case of impurity redistribution will be considered first, and purification will be discussed later on. The analysis rests on the following assumption: The movement of the zone is too rapid to allow appreciable atomic rearrangement in the solid sections and too slow to disturb the uniform impurity distribution in the liquid zone characteristic of equilibrium. Hence, the composition in the solid at the left solidifying interface will be determined by Eq. 1 while the impurity concentration of the liquid zone will be uniform throughout its length. The reasoning which follows closely parallels that of Appendix 11 in Pfann&apos;s paper. It is reviewed here for the case of the nth zone pass in order to make clear the meaning of an operator essential to the present method. Fig. 4 of ref. 1 shows the movement of a molten zone of length 1 in an ingot of total length d. INTRODUCTION Dust control in coal preparation and related transport is a multi- faceted problem which must be anticipated whenever dry, fine coal is subject to rough handling which can disperse it in the air. This problem can be minimized by careful planning and proper design, by eliminating procedures which maximize dust production, and by utilizing the most appropriate dust-collection "hardware" for a given situation. Proper maintenance after dust-collection systems are installed is also very important, and will not only enable the selected equipment to perform properly, but will also reduce component wear, recover valuable product with the highest efficiency, provide cleaner and safer working conditions, and allow local clean-air standards to be met. This chapter is designed to provide basic information about dust control in relation to material processing and handling during coal preparation. Areas discussed should provide the reader with insight into basic dust-collection theory, particle behavior, equipment types, ductwork and hood considerations, general maintenance and design planning, and the economics of dust collection. Because of the wide range of areas covered and the various specialized problems inherent in each, the text is organized to be a practical reference, and not a complete, unabridged treatise of ventilation and dust-control design. Nevertheless, the information presented should be of value in both understanding and reducing problems of dust control in coal preparation.

(written discussion).-The basic requirement in the electrostatic process of electrical precipitation is that gases containing solid particles in suspension are forced to pass through an electrical field consisting of an insulated high-potential wire, or other type of discharge member, and a grounded plate, or other, type .of collecting member. Commercial. operation and efficiency of precipitation are secured by electrical and structural arrangements to provide the maximum value of the variable factors modifying the degree of precipitation. That is to say: 1. A unidirectional flow, of high-potential current is vastly more effective in precipitation than a high potential alternating-current flow.
