The mine blacksmith and drill-steel sharpening shop at the Franklin mine of the New Jersey Zinc Co. is on the surface, adjoining the main shaft. It is a brick building, 51 by 30 ft. inside dimensions, with a corrugated iron roof and concrete floor. .About two-thirds of the steels used are brought up through the main shaft; the remainder through two auxiliary shafts and are carried to the shop by team or truck. At each shaft sufficiently large stocks of sharp drills of various typcs are kept to replace all the dull steels that may be sent up; while at the shop enough sharp drills are kept to replace the dull steels in the stocks kept at the auxiliary shafts. Though this entails keeping a larger number of drill steels in service than might be required by other methods, there is less hurry in the sharpening shop and the steels have a longer period of rest. If a rest from use enables steel to recover from fatigue strains, this method secures that rest. The forms shown in Fig. 1 are supplied to each shift boss in books of 100. These are used to requisition sharp drills from the shaft stocks and cnable the men at the tops of the shafts to sort out the required sizes and to hare them ready to be sent to the various shaft stations. At one of the auxiliary shafts, the dull drills are placed on a platform from which they are dumped into the body of the wagon that takes them to the shop.

This symposium is designed to marshal a state-of-the-art account of approaches and solutions to problems arising out of waterlogging and salinization in the world's largest irrigation system which was dismembered by legal beheading of the Eastern Rivers under the lndus Waters Treaty of 1960. In this introduction, the geological and historical backgrounds of surface waters and groundwaters in the Indus Basin are presented with a summary of remedial measures undertaken and proposed to combat waterlogging and salinization. At a time when water-resource planning is proceeding on a continental scale, a study devoted solely to the Indus River Basin may seem to require an apologia. None is offered, however, for three major reasons: (1) Although the Indus is a single river basin, it is one of great magnitude and importance. The Indus River, which comes from Himalayan sources to form part of the great Indo-Gangetic Plain drainage system, is vital to agriculture and hydroelectric power in the thickly populated northern subcontinent of Indo-Pakistan. (2) The Indus has become a plexus of extraordinary problems since the dismemberment of the world's largest irrigation system of which it was a part. The break-up of this system occurred with the legal beheading of the Eastern Waters under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. (3) Th River Basin has been the target of a Herculean effort to contain the twin encroachments of waterlogging and salinization that now threaten it with a shortage of fresh water. The British irrigation system of barrages and canal on the Indus was a venture admirable in conception. Unfortunately, it is now a legacy burdened with unwanted consequences due to interference with the hydrological regimen, particularly the rise of water table occasioned by leakage. To cope with this situation, there has been a possibly unprecedented concentration of domestic and international engineering and scientific talent on the Indus and its problems (about a score of organizations by recent count). To marshal a state-of-the-art account of their approaches and solutions is the purpose of this Symposium. The coordinated effort now being made on a variety of fronts under the general supervision of West Pakistan Water and Power Authority (WAPDA) is directed toward the modification and control of interactions and relationships between geological materials — soils, water and its salt balance, and air —in what has been termed a huge "underground lake" in an alluvial basin. The problem is an intriguing one in that a highly complicated case history of river-course changes visible in the present surface must be projected downwards through Recent and Pleistocene sediments in order to decipher the environmental controls of deposition in terms of vertical and lateral variations in lithology and patterns. Such studies must be extended to compaction, deformation, and fabrics of the alluvium. Geohydrology is often defined as groundwater hydrology. As employed herein, it includes the distribution, quality, and behavior of surface and subsurface waters, including their evolution, vagaries, and geological, climatological, and botanical milieux." GEOGRAPHY The Indus (Sanskrit, Sindhu = river) rises at nearly 17,000 ft above the sea in the glaciers on the northern slopes of Kailas Parbat, Tibet. It is about 1800 miles long and has a total drainage area estimated at 372,000 sq miles. The average discharge is 196,000 cfs at mouth. Leaving the Plateau of Tibet, the river flows at a level which is miles above the sea, and in places miles below Himalayan peaks, in a structurally controlled northwestward course. THE coal-mining districts of Washington are mainly west of the Cascade Mountains; Fig. 1. The mines are on the foot hills of the slope, the lignite fields of Lewis and Thurston counties extending into the valleys west of the mountains. An exception is the Roslyn field, a small but important area on the eastern slope. If western Washington is divided into three areas from north to south, the bituminous coal fields and most of the active operations will be found largely in the middle area. The southern portion contains lignites over a large area. In the northern portion, mining is practically restricted to one mine, the Bellingham, which is working a subbituminous coal seam near the city of Bellingham. The degree of alteration that the coal of a particular field has undergone may be gaged roughly by the position of the field with reference to the Cascade Mountains. The lignites of Tenino, Tono, Mendota, and Castle Rock, on the railway line connecting Seattle and Portland, occur in a region, of low relief, in which the Eocene coal measures have suffered only minor disturbances. Subbituminous coals occur in the foot hills, as at Renton, Newcastle, and Bellingham. Coals high in fixed, carbon are found nearer the mountains, where. the measures have been sharply ,tilted and folded, as at Black Diamond and Carbonado. The two typical anthracite fields are located still higher, in the rugged mountains where outcrops appear both in deep gorges and on ridges at elevations approaching 5000 ft. At. Carbonado is found the only semianthracite seam worked on a commercial basis. The occurrence of this seam in a region of bituminous coal is due to the nearness of an igneous sill, which has changed its character from bituminous to semianthracite.

Hoisting is one of the earliest endeavors of man with machinery, for hoisting was probably used by the early Egyptians. Treadmills were used for general hoisting until early in the nineteenth century and it was a short step only to attach a Watt steam engine to the rope drum of a hoist. One of the earliest steam hoists was built for a coal mine at Frisne, near Valenciennes, France. It was a remarkable piece of engineering created by James Watt in 1811, using a wooden drum on a vertical shaft. This followed the crude hoist by Holtzhausen in 1803, which used a drum of wood on a horizontal shaft.' In this country there were examples of crude mine hoists, which have been developed into the efficient machines in use today. African and Australian mines show examples of both extremes, and have an array of fine hoisting equipment exemplified in those built by British manufacturers. The influence of both English and American engineering in hoisting is interestingly evident in Canada. The information available to the writer does not reveal this to be true of South Africa, although American-built hoists have been furnished. Mining camps develop their own style of equipment, adapted to local conditions. For instance, the Butte mining district adheres to the straight drum with friction clutches, because of the great number of levels from which hoisting is done or to which men and material are lowered and the necessity for hoisting or lowering unbalanced. The north Michigan copper country uses both straight and cylindroconical drums and hoists continually in balance, so that the drums are not clutched to the main driving shaft. The Joplin mining district, Missouri, has its own peculiar small hoists. Other individual mines or localities in which a number of mines have been developed show individualistic types of hoists, depending upon their particular problems. In each instance, however, the particular problem must be carefully analyzed, as conditions are seldom so near the same that a number of identical hoists can be used to advantage.

At the end of the year 1914, the main North Star incline shaft had reached the 6300-ft. level, and encountered a vein dipping southwest, or exactly opposite to the North Star. Subsequent development failed to find the North Star vein continuing beyond this intersection, so the 6300-ft. level proved to be the bottom level of the North Star vein, and very little ore was found below the 5300-ft. level. The new vein was called No. 1 vein. Development work carried on for the next 10 years discovered a third vein, called No. 2, branching off about 1200-ft. to the east, with a north-south strike and a west dip. No. 1 vein had about 900 ft. of backs above the 6300-ft. level before reaching the boundary line of the property, and No. 2 vein died out about 800 ft. above. During these 10 years, the money spent on development was increased from $54,000 in 1914 to $184,000 in 1924; the ore reserves steadily diminished until it was evident that the mine must close down unless by some means a large tonnage of ore could be developed quickly. Problems and Plans In order to understand what follows, the general layout and equipment of the mine as it was at this time must be briefly described. Fig. 6 indicates the relative positions of the shafts. The North Star (incline) shaft extends from the surface to the 6300-ft. level following the vein, with an average pitch of 26", between limits of 11" to 38. There is at present no hoisting equipment in this shaft between the 2700 and 4000-ft. levels. The Central (vertical) shaft connects with the North Star shaft at the 4000-ft. level, at a vertical depth of 1600 ft. In two compartments of this shaft 4-ton skips made a vertical turn of 15 ft. radius at the 4000-ft. level and ran down the incline to the 6300-ft. level. A cage operated in the third compartment to the 4000-ft. level. Men and supplies were transferred to a truck running on a third track down the incline shaft to the 6300, operated by an electric hoist on the 4000-ft. station. When the shifts changed double-deck cages were substituted for the skips in the vertical shaft, but they stopped at the 4000-ft. station. The truck to 6300 carried 22 men, and it required 8 min. to make a trip down and back. This arrangement was satisfactory as long as a fairly large proportion of the work was

This report is concerned with fluid displacement in porous media, in those cases where viscous and gravitational forces control the displacement. Such a system would usually be found in a sand body of large physical dimensions such as an oil reservoir, although it is possible to create such a system in the laboratory. It is shown that the position of the fluid interface can be predicted by numerical calculations using a basic idea presented by Dietz. Fluid flow is considered in a vertical plane in a homogeneous, porous medium of sufficient thickness that the capillary transition zone is small in comparison with the total reservoir. A theory developed by Dietz' is used to make numerical calculations of the position of the fluid interface. The results for several conditions are compared with scaled model experiments. The results show that, for gas drive in a reservoir of steep dip, a relatively low flow rate can displace large volumes of oil before gas breakthrough. On the other hand, water injection at favorable mobility ratio and low dip may show best performance at high rates. Water tends to underride the oil and, given sufficient rime, will break through without much oil displacement. For certain conditions, which include relatively low flow rate, the interface is a straight line and its behavior is simple to calculate. At higher flow rates, the interface is unstable, and a numerical solution was programed for an automatic computer. In general, good agreement is shown between the fluid model and the computed results so long as gravitational forces have control. For a water drive at very unfavorable mobility ratio, many small water fingers appear. These viscous fingers are not controlled by the relatively small gravitational forces. When viscous fingering becomes the controlling factor, the mathematical model is oversimplified, and results do not check the fluid flow model. INTRODUCTION Present methods of reservoir analysis depend upon certain simplifying assumptions to obtain mathematical descriptions of practical use. Material-balance methods (Muskat2 or Tarner2) assume uniform fluid saturations in the entire reservoir, or in a few subdivisions of the reservoir. An unsteady-state flow calculation by West, er at considered pressure and saturation changes in flow to a well during solution gas drive, and neglected gravity effects. Results showed only a 4 per cent difference for ultimate oil recovery by the Muskat method, even though the case chosen for study was one in which unsteady-state effects should be high. The Buckley-Leverett5 method commonly assumes a one-dimensional flow system. It is applicable at high flow rates where viscous forces predominate over gravity forces. Simultaneous, parallel flow of the two fluids is assumed, and the concept of a fluid interface is not introduced. Permeabilities to each fluid for a given saturation must be known. The method is not applicable for a two-dimensional system where cross flow becomes possible. Less well known is the displacement equation derived by Dietz. This method is designed for two-dimensional flow systems and assumes a definable fluid interface within the porous medium. Dietz showed that, for a range of low flow rates, the interface would be stable. straight and at an angle of inclination which could be simply calculated. At a certain critical flow rate, the calculated interface tilt would equal the formation dip. For higher flow rates, a finger of displacing fluid would invade the displaced fluid. Dietz indicated that his method applied only to macroscopic reservoir behavior, while the Buckley-Leverett method applied to the small transition zone at the fluid interface. The examples worked out in this report are based on the fluid-displacement theory of Dietz. It is shown that the Dietz theory may be used to derive equations analogous to the Buckley-Leverett equations. In contrast to the Buckley-Leverett method, flow is considered in a plane rather than being limited to a line. Rather than a frontal advance, the movement of a fluid interface is followed. For flow rates substantially exceeding the critical rate and for high viscosity ratio, many fingers of invading fluid occur-—rather than the single finger assumed by Dietz. On the other hand, so long as some gravitational influence remains, the flow is not entirely parallel to the bedding planes as assumed by Buckley and Leverett; therefore, both methods fail to give an adequate descrip-

It is the purpose of this paper to present a limited amount of experimental data obtained on the Charpy impact machine. Several concrete examples will be given showing the relation existing between the results obtained upon the Charpy impact machine and the behavior of the parts tested when in service. Although it is pointed out by G. Charpy and A. Cornu-Thenard1 that it is first necessary to determine a satisfactory working process before studying the correlation between the results of these tests and the behavior of the parts tested in service, this ideal course cannot be strictly adhered to. If a certain part repeatedly fails in service and the available tests give no indication of its cause, advantage must be taken of any possible means that will solve the problem; therefore, even though the reliability of the results obtained by the Charpy impact machine have been questioned by many, it was necessary to use this instrument without giving careful consideration to its possible sources of error. It would seem that the conclusions arrived at by Charpy -and Cornu-Thenard justify the assumption that the precision obtained by this machine is comparable to that obtained by the other more common forms of testing. The second general conclusion arrived at by them, namely, that the impact test upon notching does not offer any direct correlation to the ordinary tests, is also borne out by many hundred determinations made in the laboratories at Watertown Arsenal. This statement, however, should be qualified as follows: Other ordinary tests include the static tensile test from bars taken in a longitudinal direction and the Brinell hardness. The author agrees that no law is yet known for the computation of the energy absorbed in the rupture of bars of the same material but of different dimensions. Although Charpy and Cofnu-Thenard do not refer in their valuable article to the use of the Charpy machine in industrial practice, it should be stated that this instrument has been in constant use in the laboratory at Watertown Arsenal for several years, and is now employed for both routine and experimental testing.

ACCORDING to recently published statistics, it is predicted that as much oil must be produced during the next 16 years as has been produced during the past 75, in order to satisfy the high rate of consumption of petroleum products. During 1934, over 17,000 oil wells were completed in the United States, and it is expected that over 20,000 additional wells will be drilled during the current year. Were it not for the remarkable progress made during recent years in the improvement of drilling technique and in the development of equipment used in the production phase of the oil industry, it is doubtful whether sufficient oil could be produced to meet present requirements. A few years ago, wells seldom were deeper than 3500 to 4000 ft., owing to the limitations of the drilling methods and equipment employed.. Today, 'however, through the application of scientific drilling methods and the adaptation of modern equipment and improved materials, many wells range from 6000 to 8000 ft. in depth, and a few recent completions exceed 10,000 feet. DRILL TOOLS Modern rotary drilling tools are the product of ingenious design and careful selection and adaptation of materials used in their construction. They must withstand terrific abrasion and, because of their compactness, must be designed to resist exceedingly high unit stresses. In bits, core drills and reamers, the bodies are made of either forged or cast alloy steels, heat-treated to develop a combination of high strength and toughness. To provide sufficient strength to the threaded portions and to protect the threads from distortion or damage, the box or pin sections of the tools are hardened to approximately 310 to 330 Brinell hardness

INTRODUCTION The trend in the coal industry for many years has been to make every- thing "bigger and faster." This also held true for loading and storage facilities. Where once a million ton per year mine was rare, three to five million ton per year mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This greatly increased production, made possible through mechanization, required greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend toward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train with its attendant economics, more than any other factor, has contributed to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities. In the export market, the construction of ever larger coal colliers has contributed to a need for faster and larger loading facilities. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written account is faced with the possibility of obsolescence before its appearance. Thus, this chapter seeks to define the common and current practice in coal loading and storage facilities with the full knowledge that this practice is an ever-moving target. FUNDAMENTALS OF COAL STORAGE Storage of coal is becoming an increasingly important part of coal handling systems at mines, particularly since the advent of the unit train concept in transportation. In order to take advantage of reduced transportation rates on trainload shipments of coal offered by unit train movement, operators have found that storage is an economic necessity. In unit train practice large predetermined quantities must be loaded in relatively short periods of time as opposed to conventional practice where coal is loaded at a speed dependent on the production capacity of the mine and/or the cleaning capacity of the preparation plant. Two surveys of storage practices at mines reveal several objectives for storage.1, 2 Raw and/or clean coal storage is generally practiced in order to accomplish one, or a combination, of the following objectives: 1. To improve plant efficiency by distributing plant feed over the entire operating time, or to allow a preparation rate different from the production rate. 2. To limit interruptions of supply, ie, allow mine and plant to function independently with delays in one not affecting the operation of the other.

This paper presents a brief discussion of numerous devices and processes which have been utilized for the recovery of values from gases in copper reduction works and describes in greater detail the development and application in recent years of electrical precipitation, more familiarly known as the Cottrell process, to the problems of dust losses with furnace gases in copper-smelting and refining plants. The field for collection of suspended particles in gases is widely extended in our modern complex, congested .and industrialized mode of living, and its satisfactory solution is required by our increasing appreciation of the extravagant waste, unhealthful effects and nuisance which such uncontrolled emission of solid suspensions represents. Much of the special dust-recovery equipment in use today has been developed in one industry and carried over to many others. The early work of Cottrell was with sulfuric acid mists, aimed at the purification problem in contact acid manufacture, but the present uses of Cottrell equipment cover a diversified field—carbon black, combustible gas, oil mists, iron blastfurnace fumes and dusts, cement-kiln gases, as well as the purification of gases in contact and chamber acid plants and its wide and extended use in the nonferrous metallurgical field of copper, zinc and lead, and their associated metals. Dust and fume collection from furnace gases became a problem only with the modern development of large and amply powered auxiliary furnace equipment, which in turn permitted large furnace units, fast driving and large outputs of finished product per unit of furnace capacity. The ancient metallurgist with his small clay pot and hand-operated bellows had too little gas velocity to cause a real dust loss. As furnaces grew in size, flues and stacks were added, and undoubtedly the first observable dust losses were indicated by the deposits in the flue and stack base. Large flues, it was noted, collected more than smaller ones, and the expansion of a portion of the flue into a chamber represented the first serious attempt at recovery of furnace dust losses. INTRODUCTION Approximately two years have elapsed since the first summary of the Grizzly Gulch Tailings Disposal Project was presented (1). Since that time, various physical modifications and additions to the existing treatment system have transpired. Further, Homestake and the entire mining industry have been impacted severely by additional modifications and additions concerning regulatory reform aimed at total disciplinary permitting and hazardous waste management. The following paper summarizes the past accomplishments relating to the Grizzly Gulch Tailings Disposal Project, correlating these accomplishments with future plans that are being developed to comply with regulations and to continue Homestake's commitment to environmental protection. The famous Homestake Gold Mine, located in Lead, South Dakota, has been operating in the Black Hills region for over a century, approximately 12 years before the south half of Dakota Territory was admitted to the Union as the State of South Dakota (2). During the 104 years of operational development, Homestake's Gold Mine, as well as the entire mining industry, have been influenced by numerous governmental regulations dating back to the Refuse Act of 1899 which regulated the deposit of debris from mines and stamp works. The enactment of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 may be thought of as the beginning of a long line of unplanned steps to deal with the many concerns of matters pertaining to the environment. Environmental awareness continued into the 1970’s, in which the Clean Air Act, Federal Water Pollution Control Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), to name a few, surfaced.

IT IS to be. read in Western newspapers that Hon. S. S. Arentz who introduced H. R. 7736, 'has repudiated it, that certain mining men in Utah and Nevada say that they will fight it "until hell freezes over." It is to be read in more temperate expressions that "the eminent engineers who drafted the bill exhibited a woeful misunderstanding of Western sentiment and opinion." Furthermore, it is averred that there is no need for revising the mining laws, that we have got along pretty well under the existing laws, etc. Such statements are so surprising in view of, the facts of record that it is hard to believe that the oppon-ents of the bill, who make them, are well informed, or that they represent general opinion. It will be useful therefore to review the record of the case. Our GOOD OLD MINING LAWS We have indeed got on well in our mining industry, but that has not been by virtue; of our good old mining laws. Rather has it been in spite of them. Ever since the Richmond-Eureka case in the '70s there has been litigation arising from them. Early in the '80s the apex law was discarded by common consent in Leadville, and it has been ignored in every district of flat-lying ore deposits ever since. The great mines of the present time are the porphyry copper deposits. At Bingham, Ely, Ray, Chino, Miami, Clifton and Ajo the apex law is simply inapplicable. A law that is inapplicable to the modern conditions of mining may be an old law, but it can not properly be characterized as a "good" law. For such reasons, and many others of weight, there has been a demand for revision of the mining laws; dat-ing ,back at least three decades. President Roosevelt appointed a commission to advise respecting the question, said commission comprising. Dr. James Douglas (chairman), John Hays Hammond, D: M. Barringer, Walter B: Devereux, and William B. Mather. This committee was unanimous on the following points:

Gravitational measurements made by means of the Eotvos torsion balance over any area enable a representation to be obtained of the total gravitational effects over the surface of that area arising from the combination of all sources of gravitational disturbance. The investigation of gravitational anomalies occurring in the upper layers of the earth's crust, in this way, has been attended with considerable success, and, especially in areas in which no undesirable disturbing factors were present, it has been possible to locate geological structures and mineral deposits with remarkable accuracy and also to delineate their confines and to indicate their depth below the surface with a certain amount of precision. Before this can be done successfully, however, it is necessary to determine the gravitational effect arising from all other extraneous anomalies in order that these may be satisfactorily eliminated. Disturbing features giving rise to these gravitational anomalies may be divided into two classes, according to whether they are situated at or below the surface. The former are determined readily by a detailed leveling of the ground surface, and may be satisfactorily eliminated provided the specific gravity of the terrain material is known, but the latter are generally unknown, and can only be ascertained with difficulty. When, therefore, the observations obtained by means of the Eotvos torsion balance have been corrected for all surface irregularities, known as terrain and topographical effects, there remain residual gravitational values which are due entirely to subterranean conditions. The. task of interpreting these results consists in disentangling the various subsurface anomalies, and subsequently in computing and recombining the effects of these various masses in order to verify the interpretation. When the gravitational anomalies are due to large and comparatively simple structures it is a matter of little difficulty to arrive at a satisfactory interpretation of the subterranean conditions, but in more complex areas, where the geological conditions are more complicated and several irregular features exist, the process of disentangling the various constituents of the complex mass arrangement is more difficult and requires the expenditure of considerable time and labor. EXTENSIVE and diversified resources justify large populations and great industries. To carry on the business of commerce and meet the demands of large populations, the utilization of tunnels in some form for transportation purposes constitutes an important link in modern civilization. The driving of tunnels has been appropriated by the tunneling branch of the heavy-construction industry, and the progressive steps taken by modern tunnel builders were not even dreamed of 50 years ago. Great strides have been made toward more rapid progress in tunneling in the United States during the past 10 years. Tunneling consists of a definite cycle of operations developed from ideas that are crystallized and translated into action programs through various engineering phases that begin with the first preliminary survey and do not end until the job is completed. Once the line of the bore is established and a time set for the completion of the work, the face must advance according to estimates prepared before the work commences. This schedule must be followed in regular sequence from the moment the drills start against a new face of rock until they are ready again to drill the succeeding face, constituting a round.1 Mining is largely tunneling carried on under conditions often more inherently hazardous than actual tunnel construction, but for various reasons1 tunneling is more hazardous than mining in any branch of the mineral industry, On the other hand, obstacles are sometimes encountered in heavy-construction tunneling projects that when met in mining enterprises do not offer comparable tasks to avoid or overcome them. One of these is the existence of water under high pressures. In mining enterprises, various alternatives offer a solution in driving a tunnel, even to the extent of its discontinuance or the abandonment of the mine, but a "construction" tunnel usually must go forward because some important project depends largely if not entirely upon it. This paper describes an unusual method of driving a water-supply tunnel through rock carrying water under pressures and conditions that did not permit the use of ordinary tunneling methods. THE DELAWARE AQUEDUCT The new Delaware aqueduct is a Manhattan project of some magnitude; when completed, it will contain what probably will be, for some time to come, the longest tunnel in the world. Various features in its construction are currently described in the trade journals of the construction industry, and informative engineering details are given in the Delaware Water Supply News, published twice a month by the Board of Water Supply of the City of New York. Work was begun on this project on March 24, 1937. The tunnel will convey water from reservoirs at the headwaters of the Delaware River to the City of New York.

SYSTEMATIC data are presented on the relation of composition of nickel silvers to color, tarnish resistance, hardness and liquidus temperatures, for alloys containing up to 30 per cent nickel and 50 per cent zinc, further modified at certain nickel and zinc contents by 0 to 8 per cent of tin and 0 to 10 per cent of lead. Attention has also been directed, using a still more limited range of alloys, toward a study of tensile properties and such casting properties and characteristics as fluidity, shrinkage and pressure tightness. In some of these, rather broad ranges of composition are dealt with; in others, it has been expedient to focus attention on the Federal Specification 20 per cent nickel silver casting alloy, WWP-541.

Resume.—The district of Santa Eulalia lies 12 miles to the southeast of the city of Chihuahua, Mexico. The ore deposits occur in a Cretaceous limestone of unknown thickness, overlain by a series of rhyolitic tuffs and flows. The limestone is very gently folded and is cut by several systems of fissures, of which only those with a general north-south strike are pre-mineral and control the deposition. The deposits are of two main types; the earlier silver-bearing iron sulphide type occurs as high-grade tabular bodies resembling veins and as large masses of relatively low-grade ore, The gangue of this type is composed of lime-iron silicates that point toward a close association with an igneous rock mass which has not yet been encountered. In the later silver-lead-zinc type the ore occurs in vertical chimneys and horizontal mantas, principally as oxides, though at a depth of 1,500 ft. some sulphides have been encountered. During oxidation the ore chambers have increased in size owing to the solution of the walls by the sulphuric acid generated in the process, and a substitution has taken place of nearly one-half part by weight of the original constituents of the ore, by newly introduced elements and radicals. Both types are believed to have come from greater depths than those yet reached by mining, and their ultimate source, from a consideration of similar deposits, is believed to be an igneous rock in contact with the limestone at some horizon below. The deposits are believed to have been formed at unusually great depths, as indicated by the proved great vertical range of the silicate minerals coupled with the absence of the igneous rock, and by the practically unchanged character of the silver-lead-zinc ores as far as developed. The volcanic capping is believed to be distinctly later than the economically important ore deposition. INTRODUCTION EVER since a genetic connection between many ore deposits and magmas began to be widely recognized, some two-score years ago, there has been much discussion of the complex and intricate problem of the genetic association of specific kinds of mineralization with specific kinds of igneous rocks. General discussions of the latter problem and pertinent data have been given by S. F. Emmons, Kemp, Lindgren, Niggli, Rastall, Spurr, Vogt, and others. In this paper no attempt is made to deal with mineral deposits genetically associated with volcanic rocks, but only with those presumed to be related to exposed intrusive masses. The writer is indebted to E. S. Bastin, F. F. Grout, Edward Sampson, and to the members of the committee in charge of the preparation of the volume, for a critical reading of the manuscript and many worth-while suggestions.
