The basic research program of the Scientific Coal Research Institute at Ostrava - Radvanice into the problem of geophysics has been influenced by the specific nature of present urgent geo- physical problems in mines and directed to attain higher grade of effectiveness, safety, and overall economy in mining activity. The research has been divided into two basic trends: Seismoaccoustic research deals with questions pertaining to safety in mining especially when work is in coal seams under "heavy roofs", i-e., thick beds of sandstone prone to rock bumps and characterized by caving. Methods have been developed with the definite aim to determine the time and space prognosis of critical states of tension in the rock mass when stability is disturbed as a result of mining activity. Seismic research is directed towards the determination of detailed structural and tectonic elements of the internal geological formation of the Carboniferous rocks, the establishment of continuity or tectonic faulting of coal seams, and the evaluation of magnitude, shape, and time changes in the rock mass surrounding the mine workings. The measurements have been applied either from the surface or in the underground workings according to the specific nature of individual problems. Satisfactory results have been obtained in some branches of this research, other branches being still in the stage of development. Remarkable results have been achieved in the development of seismoaccoustic methods designed to establish the time prognosis of dangerous dynamic phenomena accompanying the process of strata deterioration above the worked longwall face. THE best method for the estimation of copper in ores and secondary products is that proposed by Dr. Steinbeck* for the award offered by the Mansfeld'schen Ober-Berg-und Hutten-Direction. It is based upon the decolorization of the blue ammonia solution of copper by potassic cyanide,† It is necessary for the accurate estimation of copper in arsenides that the arsenic be separated from the copper before the ammonia solution is made. The presence of a notable amount of arsenic renders the titration by potassic cyanide inaccurate, the end reaction being obscured by the appearance of a yellowish-green tint towards the end of the titration. The change of the color of the ammonia solution from blue to the tint caused by the presence of arsenic cannot be used for an end reaction, for the intensity and quick appearance of the latter-color depend upon the amount of arsenic present in the solution. In the analysis of speise, the method of separating the copper by an oxidizing and reducing treatment in the muffle, to volatilize the arsenic, gives poor results, and there may easily be some loss of the weighed sample. The separation of the precipitated sulphides of arsenic and copper by treating with sodic sulphide, gives good results, but the process is tedious. I have used the two following methods, which are simpler and more expeditious than those mentioned, with good results. * Fresenius, Zeitschrift Air Anal. TO the large majority of visitors the unique features of the National Park are interesting chiefly on account of their novelty. Scientists of all schools may find here food for reflection, and much that is rare and marvelous; but the real, practical uses of the reservation, aside from its pleasure-giving adaptations, are not as yet fully appreciated. Since 1873, the writer has on frequent occasions expressed freely his own views upon the proper means of utilizing the Park for the best interests of science.* Some of the recommendations made have been adopted by the authorities. At the suggestion of friends I present here a brief statement of facts concerning matters which may be of advantage for visiting engineers to know, hoping that the very limited stay of the Institute may thereby be rendered a little more profitable, and that our common profession may possibly receive some benefit. First, then, it should be understood that, as in many other cases in. the West, the present routes to the Park from the south are not the most direct. The expedition of Captain (now Major) Jones in 1873 discovered a practicable route for a, wagon or railroad via the head of Wind River, through To-gwo-tee Pass and Two-Ocean Pass, by which the distance from Point of Rocks, Wyoming, on the Union Pacific R.R., to the Yellowstone Lake, is only 290 miles. (communication to the Secretary) : In his remarks on crushing-machinery, Mr. Douglas says (Twins., xxii., p. 322): "To insure a smaller and more uniform size of particles in the crushed material, the Dodge crusher still communicates motion to the upper extremity of tile movable jaw, which oscillates on fixed pivots projecting from its lower extremity!' The notion that, in order to obtain a fine and uniform product from a rock-breaker, the movable jaw must be pivoted at its lower extremity, seems to obtain generally among mill-men, as well as among manufacturers of machinery. My experience with machines of both types does not confirm this belief. It is true that, to obtain a uniformly fine product from a jaw-crusher, the stroke at the lower extremity of the crushing-surface must be short; but that the movement at that end must be less than at the other or receiving-end is, I think, an erroneous assumption. Figs. 1 and 2 are intended to illustrate the two types of machine. It is found in practice that the capacity and the nature of the product of either machine, as usually constructed, are governed by the opening, C D, and the length of stroke of the movable jaw at D. This being the case, machines of either type, of the same width of crushing-surface, running at the same speed, and having the same adjustment as to opening and stroke at D, should give, when fed

In recent years examination of thin foils of metals and alloys has been widely used in studies of deformation and phase-transformation mechanisms. Applications of this technique to studies of titanium and titanium alloys have been infrequent. Therefore, as a large number of titanium alloys have been investigated in this laboratory, it is proposed to give an account of methods used. Particular emphasis will be placed on some of the artifacts introduced in thin foils of titanium and titanium alloys during preparation. Experimental Procedure. It has been found that a large number of titanium alloys can be electropolished in a solution consisting of 30 cu cm perchloric acid (60 pct), 175 cu cm n-butyl alcohol, and 300 cu cm methyl alcohol. Thin foils are prepared using the window method and the electropolishing conditions listed in Table I. Although this solution is not unique, it is attractive because of its low concentration of perchloric acid and the wide range of alloys for which it can be used. Electropolishing is conducted at below -25°C as above this temperature a brown anodic film is produced on the specimen surface. Temperatures above -25°C also accentuate preferential attack of the 0 phase in the two-phase alloys, which unfortunately occurs at all temperatures. Contamination. It is advantageous to reduce the specimen to a thickness of 25 to 50 p prior to electropolishing, since the low-temperature electropolishing technique results in a low rate of metal removal. THE Manual of the Oil and Gas Industry, under the Revenue Act of 1918, published by the Treasury Department for the guidance of oil companies in preparing their estimates of future recoverable oil for the purpose of calculating depletion, gives the first large public collection of comparative decline curves for the whole country. It is a matter of both scientific and practical interest to so arrange these data that the pools can be readily compared. There are certain difficulties in such a comparison, however: 1. The economic limit varies from 50 to 2000 bbl. a year in different pools taken. (2) Because of this variation in economic limit, the range of data shown makes comparison possible only for wells of intermediate size. In order to be as inclusive as possible, I have taken as an expression of the rate of decline the amount of oil produced in the period during which a well drops from 3000 to 2000 bbl. a year.. No period of smaller production could be used because of the high economic limit in California; and no period of larger production and yet include the small well areas of the Appalachian. As it is, the Lima-Indiana wells are excluded. In a few instances, curves were extrapolated to obtain the reading, where the curve seemed regular enough to warrant it. In general, the amount of oil, in barrels, produced while a well declined from 3000 bbl. to 2000 bbl. a year is shown in Table 1.

The Montana Phosphate Products Co., subsidiary of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, operates three phosphate properties north and northeast of Garrison, Powell County, Mont. Production of all three is from the same phosphate bed, a 3 to 4-ft. member of the Phosphoria formation, whose outcrop is traceable across the mountains of the Garnet Range in a series of southeasterly pitching folds. Because of topographical differences and of variations in the attitude of the bed, each property has its own mining methods and problems. Most of the phosphate rock produced since 1930 has been shipped to the plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. at Trail, B.C., where it is treated with sulphuric acid for conversion to phosphoric acid, which in turn is used to produce various fertilizers. History The occurrence of rock phosphate in Montana has been known since 1910, and the Garrison area was mapped by the United States Geological Survey in 1913. In the nineteen twenties William Anderson, owner of a ranch 8 miles north of Garrison, discovered phosphate on his land, and the Montana Phosphate Co., which later became the Montana Phosphate Products Co., was formed to work the deposit. Montana Phosphate Products Co. later obtained United States leases on two adjoining parcels of ground, and this combined property, known as the Anderson mine, has been the main source of Con-solidated's phosphate rock. The mine now includes an adjoining parcel leased from Anaconda and mined from the Anderson workings. In 1940, the Graveley mine, a small privately owned property 6 miles east of the Anderson, was leased from the owner by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and a U. S. lease held by Graveley on some adjoining ground was subleased. In 1943 the Luke mine, on the Mineral Hill property, 1 3/4 miles south-southwest of the Graveley, a U. S. lease, which previously had produced a few thousand tons, was optioned from the lessees by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and is now being developed. At both these mines the rock is appreciably higher grade than at the Anderson mine. Geology The Phosphoria formation is the Permian member of an extensive sequence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks. It is underlain by Pennsylvanian (Quadrant) quartzite and Mississippian limestone, and overlain without any marked unconformity by Jurassic (Ellis) shale and Cretaceous shale and sandstone. The works heretofore used in carrying out the Bessemer process have been constructed substantially as follows: The whole works or plant has been divided into three parts. 1. The division in which the metals for conversion are melted. 2. The division in which the metals are converted into steel and cast into ingots, or the converting department. 3. The engine and boiler department which supplies the hydraulic power required to move the machinery, and which furnishes the blast used for converting the crude metal into steel.

WE have already devoted two previous memoirs to this question. In the first we collated and discussed the existing literature on the subject; in the second, we described the crystalline forms obtained by the reduction, at different temperatures, of ferrous chloride by hydrogen or by zinc-vapor. The conclusion from these researches was that the three allotropic states of iron-a, stable below A2; 19, stable between A2 and A3; and 7, stable above A3-all crystallize in the cubic system. The differences observed were such as are customarily encountered in the crystallographic records of many minerals of which allotropic varieties or isomerides are not known, but did not conform to the ordinary definition of polymorphism. It is, however, improbable that allotropic transformations, which are placed beyond doubt by a series of positive facts, do not involve some changes in the intimate structure. As a matter of fact, the crystals we did obtain were too small to allow of a precise examination, and this might introduce an element of uncertainty in the firm establishment of our conclusions. Professor H. Le Chatelier was even led to think from some of our results that iron could very well be a rhombohedron simulating a cube, and not a true cube, and it will be remembered that the crystalline form of bismuth was for a long time incorrectly regarded as cubic. not weaken. I saw him shortly before he was killed; his conduct under fire was splendid and an inspiration to his men. His loss is felt deeply by all ranks. Thanks to him and to others, who like him, paid the full measure of devotion to their country, our line was held until the critical situation in that vicinity was at an end. He died the true death of a soldier, with his face to the enemy. As we now look back, it is easy to believe that this holding of the line of defense intact by General Carey and his men was a determining factor in the outcome of the war. To have played so important and noble a part in this vital effort as that taken by Perry is assuredly the privilege of few. Our lives, it seems, are like capital entrusted to us to be expended as wisely and effectively as we may. With them we purchase whatever of accomplishment the stuff that is in us permits. It is impossible to escape profound regret that a career so full of the highest promise, and a personality so overflowing with all that is fine and lovable, should have been cut short at the age of thirty-one. Yet who can doubt that in a few months Perry bought with his life the fullest achievement of a life-time—a glorious part in the salvation of Liberty and Justice and Decency, indeed of Civilization itself! NEARLY one hundred members of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and friends of Professor Peele met at dinner at the Aldine Club, New York, on the evening of April 26, to take part in the ceremonies attending the presentation of the Society's annual gold medal. This had been awarded to Professor Peele by the Society in recognition of his laborious and painstaking work as Editor-in-chief of the monu-mental "Mining Engi-neers' Handbook. Carl A. Meissner acted as toastmaster. W. Y. Westervelt, a student and lifelong asso-ciate of Professor Peele, then recounted some of his friend's early exploits, be-ginning with his mining adventures in the paternal cellar, whereby the neces-sity for adequate ventilation was indelibly impressed on his mind. Graduating from the Columbia School of Mines in 1883, Robert Peele for several years followed the typical mining career, as assayer and superinten-dentatan outlying Colorado mine; mill foreman and assistant superintendent of the Silver King, in Ari-zona; in charge of a mine at Fairplay, Colo.; and superintendent for the Ore-gon Gold Mines Co., at Cornucopia. At intervals during this experience, he spent parts of four years on two mineral investigations m in Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and Dutch Guiana. He i was called to Columbia as Adjunct Professor of Mining in 1892, and became Professor in 1904. During his sabattical leave in 1903 he travelled around the world, r stopping at some of the most important mining cen-ters, and in 1910 he renewed his acquaintance with South Africa and South America.

Ordered and disordered specimens of the alloy CusAu were cold worked and then annealed at 2880, 310°, and 340°C, together with disordered unworked specimens. me resistivity decreased during annealing mainly as a result of ordering; the resistivity measurements suggest that in cold-worked specimens the growth of antiphase domains is impeded. The strength properties increased during annealing at 288 "C; in cold-worked specimens this increase was lo a level above that for cold-worked specimens which had not been annealed. X-ray diffraction showed that after annealing for a few hours at 288ºC, the long-range order increased to a constant value; additional annealing at 288ºC resulted in the growth of antiphase domains in which the degree of order was constant. Changes in peak breadth and particle size confirmed that in cold-worked specimens the major effects of cold work were not eliminated during annealing at 288 "C, although a slight recovery process occurred. When a specimen of the alloy Cu3Au is heated to a temperature below the critical temperature (388ºC), long-range ordering tends to occur in a specimen containing less than the equilibrium amount of order characteristic of that temperature Ideally, a specimen of Cu3Au contains no long-range order if it has been quenched from above the critical temperature. Long-range order is reduced by cold work. If cold-worked specimens are heated, restoration processes such as recovery and recrystallization may occur,

The Kalengwa mine, situated in a remote area of Zambia in Central Africa, has presented some unique problems to the planners engaged in developing the deposit. This small, high grade copper deposit contains some 1,688,000 tons of ore at a grade of 9.3% contained copper. Of this 362,000 tons is classified as high grade ore at 27.2% Cu, the coarse fraction of which can be fed directly to converters; 733,000 is classed as intermediate grade ore averaging 6.3% Cu, and 593,000 tons classed as low grade ore containing 2.1% Cu. The geology of the deposit and the establishment of the mining operation is fully described. A concentrator is being built at Kalengwa to treat the high grade fine product, intermediate, and low grade ore, whilst the coarse high grade ore will be trucked to the Copperbelt smelters for direct smelting. Details of metallurgical processing are given. The decision to truck the coarse high grade ore to the smelters on the Copperbelt necessitated the construction of a new 200-mile road, the setting up of a fleet of heavy ore transport trucks and associated equipment. The remoteness of the area from established communication facilities on the Copperbelt necessitated the provision of radio communications between Kalengwa and the head office at Kalulushi, and the establishment of a regular mine air service. The paper also describes the training of an unsophisticated local population in the operation of heavy plant and machinery, the establishment of the township, and the provision of health services.

RESULTS presented in a previous paper1 have shown that the strength of fired pellets made from eastern Mesabi magnetite concentrates containing 8 to 9 pct Si02 as quartz and silicates is due to several processes which occur during firing. These are: l-recrystallization and cementation of the fragmented magnetite grains; 2-formation of slag from reaction between the quartz, silicates, and available ferrous iron, followed by slag-bonding of the magnetite grains; and 3-oxidation of the magnetite to hematite and subsequent recrystallization and grain growth of this constituent. Microscopic examination of all magnetite pellets fired in one operation in small and large-scale pilot plant furnaces and possessing normal strengths shows that the processes 1,2, and 3 have taken place; where strengths are low and the pellets are otherwise sub- normal, one or more of the processes has not occurred. For example, soft and friable red pellets may contain a central core of slag-bonded recrystallized magnetite which is strong enough in itself, but the shell contains only slightly recrystallized hematite, indicating that the maximum temperature reached was too low. Processes 1 and 2 can occur only under reducing conditions, as for example, when coal is intention- ally added to the original pellets; under neutral conditions, when pellets are fired in an inert atmosphere; or when pellets are brought so rapidly to temperature in an oxidizing atmosphere that oxygen diffusion to the core lags behind the recrystallization and slagging effects. In the present work, experiments determined the effect of the order-disorder reaction near the Fe,Al composition on the magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction of single crystals: A material which is more difficult to magnetize in one direction than in another is anisotropic, that is, the ease with which ferromagnetic materials may be magnetized in different crystallographic directions determines the anisotropy. Two investigators have estimated the anisotropy of the aluminum iron alloys from poly-crystalline data;1,2 however, these estimates should not be considered to be reliable. Siege1 made two accurate measurements of the first anisotropy constant* from single crystals of 4.0 wt pct aluminum sotropy throughout the ferromagnetic aluminum iron system have been described. These results were obtained from single crystals which were slowly cooled and, hence, ordered near the Fe3Al composition.4 Magnetostriction is the change in length per unit length resulting from applying a magnetic field to a ferromagnetic material. For the purpose of this report, the saturation magnetostriction was measured. This is the maximum change in length per unit length resulting from an applied magnetic field large enough to saturate the material in a given direction. This magnetostriction has been determined for single crystals of the ferromagnetic aluminum-iron system.' The crystals near Fe3Al were also ordered. PREPARATION AND TREATMENT OF SINGLE CRYSTALS Single crystal bars were grown from the melt.' The raw materials for these crystals were iron and aluminum of 99.9 and 99.99 pct purity, respectively.
